The Hunger Games

I've slowly been hearing a lot about this series due to the upcoming movie release. It sounded like pretty serious subject material, so I was dubious about the kind of movie it would end up being. I saw a trailer recently, and I was pretty blown away. I think this author might have a big hit on her hands.

I'll definitely be checking out the movie when it comes out next year. In the meantime, I might check out the books as well.

My niece has been following the series of books. She considers it her follow-up to the "Harry Potter" books. She seems thrilled by the idea of an adaptation (though she is already worried that a few actors don't look the part of their characters).

From what I have read about the books and the context of the story in which they are set, I'm still dubious about the overall quality. It seems to me a bit like a vague tween/teen take on "Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome". I am pretty sure the series will ultimately end with a full blown rebellion and the toppling of the tyrants. The trailer has done nothing to draw me in at this point.

A lot of adaptations switch up the actors when they come to the big/little screen. I can think of many cases where this doesn't work and other where it does.

I think this is an interesting looking series that has the potential ability to appeal to young and older.

I agree. Using the Potter series as an example, the Dudley character was supposed to be fair haired in those stories. However, I would be hard pressed to visually imagine the character these days as anyone other than played by who portrayed him in the films.

My oldest is planning on reading the books, so I've asked her to summarize for me as she goes along...

Seems like an excellent idea to me. To my knowledge none of my relatives have read the books yet.
I'll just have to check them out myself. :D

I'm considering reading the books, but my concern is that I will be disappointed in the movie if it isn't as good as or the same as the books.

I know what you mean. Films based on books are rarely the same as the source material.
It's probably better to see the movie first. You can then decide if you wish to read the books.

That's what I'm thinking too. If I really get a strong desire to learn more about the characters, I can easily go check out the books at the local library.

March 23rd is around the corner! I think many of the theaters will be sold out for the first weekend/week. Advanced ticket sales are apparently breaking records.

I'm pretty excited about it, but I'll probably wait a week or two after it opens before seeing it.

Is it just me or does the plot seem to have a slight "Running Man" feel to it?

There is a touch of that from an outside perspective, but so few ideas are completely original these days. I still think it is possible for them to tell a great story regardless...and put a unique spin on it.

It's not just you SB. I read an article a while back with the author and she said much of the inspiration came from channel surfing back and forth between coverage on the Iraq war and a reality competition show. I don't recall her saying which one.

I think that "The Hunger Games", from what I see, does put a unique spin on it. It's a bit grander in scope. It is very reflective of our time. However, King's take in "Running Man" looks shockingly prescient.

This is one of those films that kind of looks interesting, but I am afraid I will go into it and end up picking it apart. No, I have not read the books but from what I do know of them I have some reservations. Not as much as I did with "Twilght", but there is something about it that feels a bit off putting to me.

Maybe I'm just getting old and cynical. Maybe I'll have to consider changing my screen name from "Swidden" to "Curmudgeon"...
