The topic of role-playing came up on another thread. I would like some general feedback from everyone on this. I've long considered adding a forum for Role-Playing here, but the demand has never been there. I have several questions. Do you enjoy writing and role-playing? Is Role-playing something you would enjoy participating in here at KOT? By extension, what are you thoughts on fan-fiction in general. Would a combo roll-playing/fan-fiction area be something you would enjoy participating in here at KOT? General comments on the subject are welcome. |

I’ve been involved with several different types of Role-Playing and Fan Fiction groups over the years. My personal thought is that I don’t care much for “real time” Role-Playing and prefer more collaborative writing both in the Role-Playing and Fan Fiction formats. DatasCatSister and I were involved in a Role-Playing style collaborative writing group a while back called “Deep Space Twelve”. How it worked was that each of us took on the identity, as it where, of a character in the fictional world and every few days or so we would write an essay sized chapter in the person’s life. The point was to read everyone else’s stories and react to what you read if it pertained to your character. So if DSC wrote about how her character was hurt in a shuttle accident in her latest entry, I might write about how my character felt about hearing the news of the accident in my next entry. Every so often the leaders of the group would write about a new plot twist in the story, an alien race comes to cause havoc for example, and then the central thread in all the writing would be dealing with that plot until it was resolved and a new one was introduced. On Sister Trek several of us wrote 2 and half small novel sized Fan Fiction stories revolving around a Star Ship and Crew in the Star Trek Universe. We would each write as much as we wanted and then stopped; the next person would read what was written and than continue the story. It would go back and forth until the plot was over. I had fun doing both of those; but what is important is that someone needs to take real ownership of the process. Deep Space Twelve ended because the leaders of the group moved on with their lives and spent less and less time directing. The Sister Trek Fan Fiction was easier to direct but it too died out because I and others had less time to deal with it. I couldn’t promises much of my time; but if someone where to start something here and stick with it I’m sure I would enjoy adding my input. |

I'm not too worried about role-playing but i would never stop others taking part if they wished to. |
