McNeill: I’d Have Run Voyager Differently

Quote:

Chuck Director Robert Duncan McNeill, best-known to Star Trek: Voyager fans as Tom Paris, would have changed how the show was run had he been in charge of the show.

As reported by TrekMovie.com, McNeill was not happy with the studio attitude towards Voyager. “I heard someone at the studio saying one time that the ship was the star of the show, and that the actors were really irrelevant, which I found offensive,” he said.

“I come from a place, being an actor,” said McNeill, “a) that I really value the actors’ process and the actors’ contribution a lot. Because if we don’t have dynamic performances and happy actors, and actors that feel like they’re really contributing, then who cares, you know?”

But according to McNeill, the studio did not share his attitude. “I think they did believe that the ship was the star,” he said. “And the actors were there to wear uniforms and say their words. I like to produce from a place of real collaboration, and I want people to feel heard and valued. Certainly there should be a vision for the show that comes from one person…I think the workplace in Star Trek, generally, was not the most productive. It was not always encouraged to bring in something unexpected or do something interesting.”

McNeill is not ungrateful about his time on Star Trek: Voyager, even though he felt that mistakes were made. “I owe so much to Star Trek and to the studio and to the producers that ran the show,” he said. “Having said that, I also learned a lot of what not to do. I feel like I behave very differently.”

It sounds like the studio folks took the idea that fans consider the Enterprise a character unto itself a little too far. True that the ships were consider characters, but without the actors the ship would ultimately be a bunch of nuts and bolts.

I think it says a lot about the idea that folks at the studio level really don't have a clue as to what is important to Trek fans.

As much criticism as has been thrown at Abrams an Co. for their version of Trek they did get the idea that it was the characters that were important as much as the ship.

As much as I loved the Seven character, I have to wonder if they tried to overcompensate at some point on the character development end when they chose to focus so much on Seven.

The writers still managed to develop a few of the other characters.

I agree that there was too much emphasis on Seven. I would love to have seen more development with characters like Chakotay and Harry. The Doctor got his fair share. And we were given a developing relationship between Paris and Torres. However, I think that after a time Janeway's character development stagnated.

Absolutealy there was way to much focus on seven, however I think some of the storylines got quite bad by the last season, however it still remains my favorite ST series!

Seven was over developed but she still was a great character. We actually got to see inside the brain of a Borg, beyond Locutus.

I would have loved to see more Kim, I know a lot of people don't like him like they don't like Wesley but he was a good character. He had a long way to go and they could have done much more with the Tom/Harry friendship then they went. They were fun together.

And as far as the ship being the star, while it was a beauty without the cast/crew it would be nothing.
