I caught that tribute.

I really like River Song too. I was super glad they chose to include her in the premiere. For a long time now, they have been hinting that River is the one who killed the Doctor (the act that landed her in prison). However, then she went on about reaching the day when he no longer recognizes her. This sort of implies that she may have killed another to end up in prison. I don’t know. It is definitely a mystery to me still at this point.

I liked the episode. I did think it got off to a slow start, but it was the season premiere. Its like the first day back after not being around each other for a while….taking time to catch up kind of thing.

The intrigue was nicely set up from the beginning when the blue letters came in the mail with the number on it.

I wasn’t overwhelmed with sadness when the Doctor was killed, because you kind of knew there would be a Big red reset button or some kind of loophole that would bring the Doctor back. What was a surprise, was how they brought future and present Doctor into the story mix.

The aliens are a creepy looking species. I wonder why they are all wearing dark suits? I suppose they could be putting the telepathic whammy on people to make them look like people. Actually, now that I think about it, the little girl (what looks like a girl) in the space suit could possibly be one of the aliens. I have to wonder why “the girl” has been contacting the president.

The story is still a little open-ended with this being a two-parter.

Doctor Who season premiere BBC America's highest-rated show ever

If you think you were nervous about Saturday's Doctor Who season-six premiere, just imagine how the creators must have felt. While we were worrying whether it would be any good, they were worrying whether we'd even turn up for another dose of Matt Smith.

Well, the numbers and the positive critical response show that neither of us had anything to worry about. That is ... in the U.S. The U.K. reception was a different matter entirely.

According to TV By the Numbers, "The Impossible Astronaut," the first episode of the new season, was BBC America's highest-rated, most-watched telecast ever in the Live + Same Day category, reaching almost 1.3 million viewers, which was up by 71,000 viewers from the network's previous best, which was LAST season's opening episode of Doctor Who.

The news from the other side of the pond wasn't as positive, however. According to the BBC, the first episode in the U.K. was "watched by an average audience of 6.5 million viewers," which sounds pretty good until you realize that this "was down from the eight million recorded by overnight figures on Matt Smith's show debut in April 2010."

In fact:

While final consolidated viewing figures—which include playback on recording devices—will push ratings higher, "The Impossible Astronaut" is likely to be the least watched series opener since Doctor Who was relaunched in 2005.

We're sure that there are doctoral theses to be written about why Doctor Who's stock rose in the U.S. and fell in the U.K., but what do YOU think's going on here?

I blame it on William and Kate mania! That and the Easter holiday. I'm referring to the lower ratings in the UK. It also may be that it was filmed here in the US. The "American episode" might have seemed a little uninteresting to many of the UK viewers.
