Alcon Eyeing 'Blade Runner' Reboot

Quote:

lcon Entertainment, the company behind The Blind Side, is looking to bring the world of Blade Runner back to the big-screen.

The 1982 cult classic, which was directed by Ridley Scott and starred Harrison Ford, was based on a Philip K. Dick novel titled Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep.

The company is in final negotiations to acquire the secure film, television and ancillary franchise rights to produce prequels and sequels to the iconic 1982 science-fiction thriller.

Alcon is getting the film rights from Bud Yorkin, who was an exec producer on the original 1982 movie. Yorkin will serve as a producer on the projects.

Alcon co-heads Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson. Cynthia Sikes Yorkin will co-produce. Frank Giustra and Tim Gamble, CEOs of Thunderbird Films, will serve as executive producers.

The story is set in a future where man has created clones called replicants who are used for dangerous work. When they rebel on a space colony, replicants are banned and hunted down.

The movie centered on Rick Dekkard, a retired member of a police officer corps called blade runners who them hunt down on Earth. Dekkard is called back to duty one more time to track six clones who escape a colony and come to Los Angeles.

Alcon seems to know it has a beloved movie property on its hands and promised to be mindful of that fact.

"This is a major acquisition for our company, and a personal favorite film for both of us," the company said in a statement. "We recognize the
responsibility we have to do justice to the memory of the original with any prequel or sequel we produce. We have long-term goals for the franchise, and are exploring multi-platform concepts, not just limiting ourselves to one medium only.”

I am not totally opposed to a sequel. It would have to pack a punch, or would end up being a pale wannabe of the 1982 classic.

The original was a very good, stand alone film. I was never wild about the Vangelis soundtrack, but would hate to see anyone try to rework that aspect alone.

I guess the big question could be addressing some of the subject matter further. It's covers more than one area. Human rights, terminal conditions, how we treat our environment. It's fertile ground but if you don't treat the subject matter intelligently, along with the audience, then it will not work very well at all.

I hope it doesn't turn out like I, Robot (staring Will Smith).

I actually thought that "I, Robot" wasn't that bad. Better than a lot that comes out these days in that it was not horror disguised as science fiction.

I am a fan of a lot of Will Smith's work, but this role for him was mismatched in my opinion. So much so that I thought he detracted from the legitimacy and believability of the subject matter/movie. Smith's ability to take on dramatic roles is more miss than hit because he is not an actor who is often good out of his comedic/funny/light-hearted lane. If another actor had been the lead actor, my view of the movie could be entirely different.

My concern for "Blade Runner" is that the movie will be dumbed down and the subject matter not taken seriously in a way that I think was intended with the story.
