Firefly reruns to air on the Science Channel

The Science Channel has apparently picked up the rights to air Firefly. It will premiere March 6th.

I know you are probably wondering why the Science Channel. Instead of commercials (some or all), they are going to do special commentary with Dr. Michio Kaku "explaining why the science fiction featured in the show really isn't that far from science fact."

I think that might be an interesting twist.

Personally, I was never a fan of the show, but loved the movie "Serenity". I will give the show a second chance and watch it as it runs on the Science Channel.

Science Channel Does Reruns Right with Firefly

Reruns are a great way to catch up on shows that you've missed—like, duh, obviously. But what's the point in tuning into reruns of a show you love when you could just as easily pop in the discs from your [name of the TV series that's being rerun] DVD box set, skip the annoying commercials, and watch it on your own time?

That's where Science Channel comes in with a simple, yet genius way to add to the experience. Instead of just buying rights to re-air an old show, the Discovery Channel offshoot will add something to the formula when it begins re-airing the cult hit Firefly—Joss Whedon's much beloved sci-fi Western—on March 6, starting with the two-hour pilot.

Rather than just throwing the show willy-nilly to ads for commercial breaks, super-scientist Dr. Michio Kaku will add commentary, "explaining why the science fiction featured in the show really isn't that far from science fact," according to Discovery. Kaku is a science rock star who has been featured on all kinds of shows, and he's one of those passionate scientists who can make the subject both entertaining and fascinating. While it's unclear how Dr. Kaku's commentaries will be added to the broadcasts, he's great on camera, so I hope they will be short videos. [UPDATE: Yes! Discovery has confirmed that Dr. Kaku will appear in interstitial videos throughout each episode.]

This is how networks should air reruns, and it's so easy. Add something to the mix by offering some inside information, some extra explanation, anything. And no, those pop-up bubbles on Lost reruns don't count. Imagine if Dr. Kaku tackled that show!

I wonder if they will do this with other series? Firefly did a lot to try and remain believable. No sound in space was a big thing with the show.

Frankly, I would rather that it keep its genuine science focus. However, I prefer the idea of something like this to reality shows that really have nothing to do with the channel's subject matter (i.e. History's "Ax Men", "Top Shot", "Ice Road Truckers", etc.) that shoehorn some small voice over elements to try and make it seem relevant to the network's focus.

I don't know whether or not they will do this with other shows. It will probably depend on how good the ratings are.

There is so much competition out there, networks are scrambling to find new ways to bring in the viewers. If the Science Channel is going to air general programming, then at least they are approaching it somewhat differently. Most cable stations are going the reality show route.

I'm reminded a bit of what G4 did with the interactive TOS/TNG episodes (ST 2.0 and ST: TNG 2.0). It was new and interesting in a Tech/Trek way. I bet the Science Channel took note of that.

Speaking of Firefly there was this thread on SB63's board. No link to the original article, but the text is posted.
Nathan Fillion would like to play Capt. Mal again.

Here is another article for those of us at KOT to view....

'Firefly' returning to cable; Fillion says he'd play Mal again -- EXCLUSIVE

Quote:

Browncoats rejoice: Firefly is returning to basic cable — and Nathan Fillion has something to say about it.

The Science Channel has acquired the rights to the cult-hit and will air the series in its short-lived entirety, plus some new extras. Science Channel will wrap each episode with interstitial segments starring renowned physicist Dr. Michio Kaku, who will discuss the theoretical science behind the show’s sci-fi concepts.

According to Firefly studio 20th Century Fox, this will mark the first time Firefly has aired on a fully distributed basic cable channel since 2008, when it ran on USA Network.

In honor of this occasion, star Nathan Fillion took a brief break from shooting ABC’s Castle today to jump on the phone and answer five Firefly questions — including whether he’d ever reprise the role of Captain Mal again. That interview and more details about Science Channel’s Firefly plans below:

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: What was the part about playing the character?
NATHAN FILLION: It was my favorite job ever. What wasn’t great about it? I got to wear a low-slung holster. I got to ride horses. I got to have a spaceship. I got to act mean and curmudgeonly. [Creator Joss Whedon] is really good at kicking characters in the nuts so the other characters would have laughs at my expense and that was great too.

If Castle had its series finale tomorrow and Fox said to you and Joss: “We screwed up, let’s try doing Firefly again.” Would you do it?
Yes. Yes. I would examine very closely Fox’s reasoning — I’m a little gun-shy. If I got $300 million from the California Lottery, the first thing I would do is buy the rights to Firefly, make it on my own, and distribute it on the Internet.

What’s the most common thing Firefly fans say to you?
No. 1, “Is there going to be more?” No. 2, “Why was it canceled?”

Why do you think the show has had such an enduring appeal?
It’s a great question. We’re the most story-literate society the world has ever seen. What Joss tends to do is twist story conventions into reality. Whereas the story goes like this, real life goes like this, and that’s what Joss has mastered.

Do you ever watch the show nowadays or is that just weird?
It’s not weird. I haven’t watched it in a long, long time and I would like to revisit it.

Firefly premieres on Science Channel on March 6 at 8 p.m., with the two hour pilot, followed by the first episode at 10 p.m. Following that, Firefly episodes will air every Sunday — and, yes, in their original intended order and upgraded to high definition.

Fillion has really grown on me as an actor, and I would definitely welcome the return of "Firefly" (revamped a little) or at the very least a sequel movie to "Serenity". I think at this point, another movie would work better since Fillion is staring on "Castle"....which is another show I enjoy watching right now. Also, Morena Baccarin is tied up with V (as Anna).

I think a movie would be the best place for it to go.

I think they should do a whole series of movies. I think it would be much easier to depict the cast changes that took place during "Serenity" and general aging/look changes for the actors since the show ended/last movie ended.

Firefly will premiere tonight at 8:00pm on the Science Channel.

Looks like they will be airing the episodes multiple times, so if you miss it at 8:00pm, check for another time.

The two-hour pilot "Serenity" and then "The Train Job" will air tonight. (three hours total)

I finally got the series set for Christmas, and I picked up the "Serenity" movie at Best Buy in the $4.99 bin so I'm finally getting caught up with the series. Only took me 10 years. :(

I'm pretty impressed with the characterizations. The effects are a bit thin, and obviously were the "ancestors" of the effects used a few years later for nuBSG, but interesting how Joss Whedon took the concept of "Wagon Train to the stars" literally and ran with it. I'm watching them in order and just finished "Safe".

Mal is an interesting mix of Jim Kirk and Han Solo. The fact he loves Inara is a bit obvious, though I'm surprised he didn't get decked for his "whore academy" crack in "Shindig."

Jayne is a flat out jerk. One of my favorite characters is Shepherd Book. From what I've read, we wouldn't have found out his secret until season two, which of course never happened. Would love to know why the Alliance rolled out the red carpet for his treatment when he was shot. I don't think it had anything to do with him being a man of the cloth. Unless he's that era's equivalent of the Pope or the Dalai Lama or something.
