Could Gale Anne Hurd return to rescue the Terminator franchise?

Quote:

Gale Anne Hurd was the producer of the classic film The Terminator and its sequel, Terminator 2: Judgment Day—also known as the GOOD Terminator movies. And in what could be a Christmas wish come true, she said she would love to make another Terminator movie.

In saying so, she also acknowledges that the movie and TV series have gone awry from the original vision that made The Terminator so utterly cool: a consistent premise, dramatic tension, romance and explosions, all in one film.

While reminiscing about The Terminator, which she co-wrote along with James Cameron and William Wisher (with some inspirational help from multi-award-winning writer Harlan Ellison, but that's another story) Hurd told EW:

"It's very sad," says Hurd of the franchise's recent history. "You feel like you gave birth to something and it's been adopted and those adoptions haven't worked out. Of course I'd be interested in doing another one. I'd love it."

The news is both positive and worrying. The longer the series continues, the more its appeal can become watered down. The third movie, Terminator: Rise of the Machines, was terminally bland; the fourth movie, Terminator Salvation, is remembered more for star Christian Bale's on-set outburst than the actual movie; the television series, Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles, tended to meander (sadly, its last few episodes were extremely potent and left us wanting more).

But on the upside, Hurd could bring back the sensibility that made The Terminator great. The more Hurd talks about the Terminator series, the more ears will perk up.

Now all we need is one good financial backer to listen.

I kind of think the movie franchise has run its course. Or at least needs a rest for a few decades.

There still might be some life in the TV realm.

The Sarah Connor Chronicles was a decent TV attempt, but it eventually went off the rails. With the last episode or two, they started to do something interesting again, but alas it was canceled by then.

I actually thought the most recent film wasn't all that bad. Not great, but not bad either. Although I agree that I think the series has run its course. At this point we have caught up with the characters just about to the point where the events that lead to the first movie take place. We have really come full circle.

The television series, unfortunately, never grabbed me. Plus, anything that takes place between the time of the first film and John Connor's father travelling back in time means you essentially know Skynet is not going to be defeated. The only way you go a different route is to, and brace yourself, change the future by creating an alternate time line!

Some of the problems I had with this overall story is the repetition of people/Terminators being sent back in time to stop John Connor. At some point, I am thinking "been there done that". Will the future ever change for the better?
