I might be the only person on this planet who did not like this movie. I did find some of the visuals interesting and I liked some of the music...but that is about it. |

I'd be interested in seeing the footage restored. It's probably less common now than it was then to take footage out after release. Only two movies I can think of that I know about would be the lying in street scene from the college football pic "The Program" and the ST "Generations" scene where Picard breaks down in his ready room. And those are like 15 plus years ago. |

For curiosity sake, I'd like to see it. Unless its another 17 minutes of the apes around the monolith. |

One of the films works for me is that it is very much a story by Arthur C. Clarke. Kubrick does a very good job connecting us to the astronauts aboard Discovery and worrying about them. Essentially, that is the only point in the film where you have characters (to some degree including HAL) that you care about. The rest, all that comes before with the ape-men and Heywood Floyd are just a preamble if you are looking for characters. The last part is the very artsy final moments of Dave Bowman. Clarke is not known for his characters in his stories. He is known for his concepts, characters most of the time are little more than a function of putting out the ideas. That comes through quite well through most of 2001 and can be a bit hard to take for some. |
