BREAKING: Fox moves Fringe to Fridays, fans fear the worst

Quote:

In late breaking Friday night news, Fox announced it's moving Fringe to Friday nights at 9 p.m. beginning January 28. Yes, that's the infamous "Friday night death slot" where many a good show has gone to die (at least on the big TV networks).

The immediate reaction from fans can be summed up by Televisionary writer and TV aficionado Jace Lacob, who instantly tweeted "Well, #Fringe, it was great knowing you..."

It may not be as dire as all that since Fox has recently said very positive things about keeping the show going. On the other hand, ratings have declined recently and fewer than 5 million people watched a recent episode, which is not an optimistic sign.

We did a full breakdown of the series (and why you should be watching it) in our recent story Why we love Fringe--and why this could be its last season.

Yep, this will probably be the last season now. :(

Hmmm, Fox says nice things about the show and then moves it to Friday night...

Remember the scene in "Animal House" the two would be pledges first go to the cool house on campus? Everyone greets them politely and smiles, then shows them to the room where you have all the undesirables sitting together. Kind of getting that same vibe here.

Once again, the dreaded "Friday night kiss of death."

However, I wonder if the ratings people are taking into account the ever-expanding abilities of viewing audiences to now watch shows whenever they want by recording on the DVR or by watching "on demand" that cable carriers offer or viewing it on the Internet. It may no longer matter so much what night a show is actually airing.

They are able to get DVR and other numbers, but I'm not sure how much weight they are giving to them. It depends on the network and probably a lot of other factors.

Unfortunately, Nielsen Ratings households still seem to be weighing heavily. I don't know anyone who is actually a Nielsen household. I hot a survey once a long time ago, but that one time thing can't possibly account for current ratings.

J.J. Abrams Horrified About 'Fringe' Move To Fridays
However, the 'Star Trek' director says he has faith in Fox

Don't Give Up On 'Fringe,' Fox Says
Move to Fridays could be great ... as long as the audience follows

Fear persists that Fox is hanging "Fringe" out to dry.

But the network claims it's fully behind the show, which stars Anna Torv, John Noble and Joshua Jackson. In fact, where "Fringe" may have suffered against tough competition on Tuesdays, Fox is hoping for a "Blue Bloods" surprise.

That series, which stars Tom Selleck, shocked the industry when it helped prove CBS' assertions that Friday wasn't dead. The series is averaging a 7.0 rating/13 share, a 43 percent improvement over what CBS was doing a year before.

It's the highest-rated show on Fridays by far, and one of the season's best-rated new dramas.

Right now, "Fringe" has watched its audience erode considerably. "Fringe" is averaging a 3.2/5 on Thursdays, according to Fast National ratings from The Nielsen Co. It's down 18 percent in the timeslot from the year before.

If "Fringe" was able to carry its audience to Friday, it would double the audience Fox's only other Friday program this year earned, "The Good Guys." It would, however, compete directly with the low-rated "Supernanny" on ABC, and finish behind CBS' programming, which includes "Medium" at 8 and "CSI: New York" at 9.

"I beg you not to write the eulogy prematurely," said Fox president Kevin Reilly. "It's a show we're very passionate about. I want the audience to transfer to Friday. I would be heartbroken if it went away. But if the fans stick with us, the show could be on the air for many years."

"Fringe" returns to Fox on Jan. 21, airing at 9 p.m. ET against "CSI: New York" on CBS.

I'll be watching, but they move the show to the TV death night and they expect fans to follow? Um, yeah okay.
