Johnny Depp Cast In 'Doctor Who' Movie?

Rumors spread regarding big screen adaptation

Quote:

Almost 12 months ago, "Doctor Who" fans were clamoring through the doors at San Diego Comic-Con on the mistaken belief that the then showrunner for the series, Russell T. Davies, was preparing to announce a movie based on the popular BBC show.

Imagine their surprise when it was revealed that no such announcement was planned, nor has the BBC moved forward regarding a potential feature film.

Now though, it has been confirmed that the Beeb is pursuing a big-screen adaptation of the series and that Davies, who resurrected the series back in 2005, is the man at the controls of the Tardis.

"Hmm. Script editor just got back to me regarding my first draft of the Doctor Who movie," Davies posted on his official Twitter site. "He seems to think 100 minutes of running around and yelling vague technobabble doesn't make for a good movie."

Of course, Davies is prone to tweeting ironic comedic one-liners, including his disappointment that there are no pink Daleks in Steve Moffat's new Dalek breed. The fearsome pepper-pot shaped villains will be part of the project, but only time will tell if one of them will indeed be pink.

"Bringing the Who franchise to the theaters is a regeneration for the character beyond the usual one," Davies said, according to SciFi Wire. "A theatrical release has a greater range and can reach millions of more people than just the fans. There will be brand new concepts and the film will be just as adventurous, scary and humorous as the television program. But none of us working the film will forget what makes the character great and interesting and the long-time fans will not be disappointed because yes, the Daleks make an appearance."

However, in addition to Davies' mentions of a big screen movie, reports have been circulating that Johnny Depp is the man to play The Doctor when it finally goes into production. For those wondering how such a thing is possible, this is not the first time that "Doctor Who" has introduced a different Doctor for a different universe. Peter Cushing previously played The Doctor in a handful of movies which generally don't fit into the mythology of the series. This movie franchise is likely to be of a similar caliber.

But how much truth is there to the report? Well, the original article has been removed from the Web, suggesting that it was either a total fabrication or something that studio and talent representatives wanted to keep quiet.

Tor.com has apparently approached studios on the subject, who refused to confirm anything regarding the script of the movie but say that "the casting of Johnny Depp as the Doctor for a 2012 film is confirmed."

None of this has been confirmed by Airlock Alpha and so should be treated as any other rumor.

I've only just recently got into Doctor Who. I've been a fan of Johnny Depp since his 21 Jump Street days. Depp is definitely able to take on the less conventional roles. Doctor Who has a lot of energy. Depp could bring that to the role at the very least.

Another positive would be without Tim Burton directing, we could see Depp in something other than caked on white face make-up. ;)

That's if he were being considered for the role. Its all rumor right now.

Depp would probably be a good choice, but I have to think that the Brits would really like it if one of their own played the iconic character. Of course, in this day and age it seems like everybody picks Aussies ;) ...

I'm warming up to the idea. He'd probably receive some flack, but then most would probably accept him if he pulled out a good performance.

I'm not sure how Johnny Depp is with accents but, I do know that he is a first rate actor. He could probably be taught by a dialect coach how to speak with a proper English accent. It would be awesome if Depp played Dr. Who.

I've always been a fan of Depp. I'm trying to think of a role where he might have used an English accent (other than the Pirates movies).....

I would not be surprised if they just went with an American English accent. Depp has a way of speaking in a proper style that could pass.

Sweeney Tood called for an English accent. Haven't seen it, so can't say how he did.

You are right...I had forgotten that Johnny Depp used an English accent in his "Pirates" movies. On that note...I think that he would make a great "Dr. Who". I would just hate for fans to get upset because he's not English though....

Many out on the Internet threw a fit when the rumor of Depp being considered first surfaced.

I think it would be a bigger controversy than the Star Trek alternate timeline reboot.

I do too, 24th. I think that it would be wise to cast a British actor as "Dr. Who".

And yet we have how many British or Aussie actors playing big, iconic American character roles? Christian Bale as Batman anyone?

Seriously, it should be about who might be best able to play the role. Frankly, Depp does quirky very well and the Doctor is nothing if not quirky.

I am amazed at how many Aussie/British actors turn on the American accent for American character roles. Many are very successful at hiding the fact that American English isn't their native tongue.

Once people know their background though, the preconceived ideas kick in and its often harder to accept them in certain roles.
