Syfy In Talks With Moore About New BSG

Quote:

Battlestar Galactica/Caprica Executive Producer Ron Moore may be adding another Battlestar series to his resume if Syfy has their way.

Syfy is in talks with former Star Trek Writer/Producer Moore for another Battlestar series, which will reportedly return to Battlestar Galactica’s roots.

With Caprica doing reasonably well, Syfy is looking to continue the popular Battlestar franchise. “We’re looking for other ways to spin off Battlestar beyond Caprica,” said Syfy Executive VP of Development Mark Stern. “That world is so rich. Were sitting down with Ron Moore and his team.”

According to Stern, although the new show would return to Battlestar’s “space-opera” roots, the show would “not necessarily be a traditional series.”

It is also expected that Caprica, the Battlestar Galactica prequel, will be picked up for a second season.

I predict Caprica will end up suffering the minute they put another Battlestar series into production.

I guess they haven't learned their lesson from the Stargate franchise. SGU (the third series) is barely keeping viewer's interest as it is.

BSG is in many ways a set storyline. Let me put it this way, as of the finale of BSG there really is no way for the colonists to get back on the ship and do anything else. They finished it in such way that cannot happen without stretching credulity and probably jumping the shark on a grand and very visible scale.

Now, I guess it all depends on how Caprica plays out. If it only is supposed to go for 4 years like its predecessor, then we will probably barely get to the Cylon War. If it goes longer then there is more story to tell. If they want to do series that more specifically tells the events of the first Cylon War that might be alright. Young Bill Adama grows up to fight in that war (as seen in flashback in "BSG: Razor"). Just leave Caprica as set the stage piece then, just don't try to run the shows concurrently as that would screw up potential drama with the characters from Caprica.

I'm in the camp of "they should drop it after Caprica" too. The BSG story was told to completion, and I can use my imagination well enough to figure out how those folks ended up populating Earth from our emergence as Homo Sapiens to the present day.

And if "Caprica" answers the question of how did the Cylons emerge, then I think that's good enough as far a prequels go. The Caprica society bears so many resemblances to our own, that it's not all that interesting enough to make another show.

^^ I think the writers have already given us a lot of information in regards to the Cylon's origins. They've been pretty good about that particular devlopment. Although, I would like them to pick it up a bit on the Adama storyside. They have the father going off into other areas that can potentially become a bottomless pit if they aren't careful.

All in all, I think "Caprica" has had a good pace. They could easily mess that up if they throw another series into the mix.
