Will Star Trek's Brannon Braga launch Fox into space?

Enterprise was just one of many Star Trek series on which Braga worked.

Brannon Braga's coming back to sci-fi ... maybe. Braga, who co-created FlashForward, served as executive producer on Star Trek: Voyager and Enterprise and acted as co-producer on Star Trek: The Next Generation, has sealed a hefty seven-figure deal with 20th Century Fox TV, where he's spent the past two seasons working on 24, Variety reported.

Though Braga is currently executive producer on 24, 20th Century Fox TV chairman Gary Newman said that the network was especially interested in his background in sci-fi. (In addition to his work on Star Trek, Braga also executive-produced Threshold for CBS.)

"Brannon quickly became integral to the success of the last couple seasons of 24," said Newman. "We thought it was a great idea to have someone as talented as he is here to develop. He's known for his ability to write genre programming, and as a studio, we love that programming. It takes advantage of all the new opportunities the digital world gives you to connect with your rabid fanbase."

"Creatively, Fox and I are very much aligned," said Braga. "The kind of shows they do and the way they develop, it's an innovative group. We get along very well."

There are no details yet as to what new projects Braga might tackle, and he indicated that he's not certain yet whether he'll return to sci-fi, pointing out that 24 was "my first terrestrial experience in quite a few years." But, he added, it remains a possibility.

How about you? What do you hope we'll see as a result of Braga's deal to develop new projects for Fox TV?

I've read that the last couple of seasons of "24" have been lackluster and "24" is being cancelled in the coming days.

FlashForward is struggling storywise, and will need to step up their game bigtime when they return. Otherwise, I don't see another season in its future.

Many think that Enterprise was at its best when Braga moved aside and let Manny Coto take the lead.

Braga's other Trek series work had its good and bad moments.

So, I would say I am in the very strongly undecided category in regards to whether or not he would be good at developing a new project for Fox.

One of the messages on that link mentioned Fox's propensity towards canceling shows. If I were going to develop a new show, I would look into one of the Cable networks that give more leeway/backing to their programming.

I've heard about the prospect of "24" getting canceled, but that if it should happen NBC might try to grab it. I don't think Braga is to blame for any of the problems that series is having. It's on Day 8 at this point and there are only so many times you can go to the well and use the same formula over and over which is what 24 does.

There is also the talk that they want to transition the series to movies after this and NBC could screw that up if they grab it. It might be the best thing for the show to do creatively, move to the big screen. Put an adventure out every couple of years.

That being said, it is a show both my wife and I have enjoyed a lot over the years. Last year did not inspire us too much, but this year it has been our preferred option and we record the CBS comedies opposite.

^^ I was offput by the format of that show and Kiefer Sutherland being the star....who I've never been a huge fan of.

I think Fox is taking a big chance on Braga. He can be a decent idea man, but he can easily go off course when he takes the helm.

Oh I agree. When he has too much freedom he can really go off the rails. He does seem more suited to being a little further down the line with someone handling some editing and revision work above him.

I've never been a huge Sutherland fan either, but he does a good job on this particular show. The format ("real time") is one I like and when the story is working well it is very good. Day's 3 and 4 didn't impress me all that much. 5 & 6 I liked, 7 was underwhelming and 8 is shaping to play out very well.

I'm sorry, but whenever I see Braga's name attached to a show, I kind of shudder. I try to give it a decent chance, but most times I ultimately end up dropping it before too long.
