Shanks: 'Stargate SG-1' As Good As Dead

Quote:

Stargate SG-1 may have lasted 10 years on the air plus two television movies, but now it looks like the series has finally come to an end.

Speaking to SciFi Wire while promoting his guest star role in The CW’s “Smallville,” former “SG-1” actor Michael Shanks confirmed that there do not appear to be any new plans to continue with the intrepid team through television movies as was originally hoped following the show's cancellation.

"Given the amount of time lag that's gone on between us doing the movies, I suspect that we might be very far away from, if ever, doing another DVD movie,” said Shanks, who played Daniel Jackson in the series and two later straight-to-DVD movies that were released in 2008. “This might be the closing of the book on that particular [chapter of the] franchise.”

Originally, the first movie was developed to serve as a closing chapter to the Ori storyline that dominated the final two years of the series. “The Ark Of Truth” resolved many of the dangling threads while leaving the door open to new adventures. This was quickly followed up with “Continuum,” a standalone tale involving time travel, alternate timelines and the return of Jack O’Neill (Richard Dean Anderson).

And although it was considered a success, Shanks believes everyone has moved on to greener pastures.

“Never say never. It's always a possibility,” Shanks said of future Stargate projects. “But I think everybody's moving on to a certain point, and with the new show doing well, everybody's focusing their attention on that. The ‘SG-1’ idea is somewhat on the back burner, which is a little bit unfortunate, because I think one more story would have been a great way to bring Rick [Anderson] back in and really go there. But you know, business is business."

But, with “Stargate: Universe” going strong on Syfy -- and with a second season already in the pipeline -- is there a market for more “SG-1” trips through the gate?

"Stargate: Universe" hits DVD Tuesday with the first half of the first season. The second half of the season is expected to air on Syfy in April.

I hope this changes towards the positive.

Yes, I think there is. I would take more SG1 over SGU anyday of the week.

Also, I wouldn't say SGU is going strong. Its only averaging about 2.5 million viewers the last time I looked. The ratings have fluctuated throughout the first season. Enough to keep it going, but not enough to scream from the rafters...even from a cable show that is given more leeway than if it were airing on one of the big three networks.

I personally am on the verge of ditching the show all together.

Anyway, I hope to see more SG-1. I agree with Shanks that there is room for at least one more good story/movie.

Shanks has appeared on "Sanctuary" this past season. Not the strongest episode, but it was good to see him again none the less. There was a cute inside joke about Dr. Magnus' hair color change. She being a brunette on the show and a blonde on SG-1.

I just re-watched seasons 1-8 of SG-1 and I'm in the marker for buying the rest of the franchise; so hopefully my revenue will help.

My question is: Just how strong is SG-U?

From what I am seeing reaction to it is pretty well split. People either love it or hate because it does not follow the previous SG formula. Personally, I am not hooked on the series yet, but am still willing to give it a chance to win me over. Since there does seem to be some out there that really don't like it I would like to think that the folks in charge of the franchise would be thinking there is still a market for the prior two series as TV and/or direct-to-dvd movies. I guess they could figure that might just undermine SG-U, but I really don't think so.

That's cool. I'd like to watch the series in order again someday. I know there are a few episodes I missed in the last season or two, so that would be like a little surprise getting to see it.

My issues have very little to do with the series breaking away from the other two series in style. The series is sorely lacking in decent character development, cast chemistry and story continuity...just to name three areas (IMO).

I'm grudgingly sticking with the show right now.

I don't think so either. It would probably help. If SG1 still does well, then that could benefit the franchise as a whole (including SGU).

The powers that be might however have very little confidence in SGU and think that the viewers will be reminded of what it is like when good Stargate is made. Viewers might tune out in masses. :scared:
