Step Inside Warehouse 13
- Quote:
-
They say there are two kinds of writers in this world; Plotters and Pantsers. These same labels can be applied to Secret Service agents as is the case with Myka and Pete. Myka Bering (Joanne Kelly) is a plotter. She uses color-coded charts, insists on dozens of dry runs and takes precautions against even the most remote possibility of danger. This is the President’s life she’s protecting so nothing is left to chance. Pete Lattimer (Eddie McClintock) is a pantser, as in “seat-of-pants” kind of guy. He depends on his instincts to get him through and he’s happy to abandon any plan if a better opportunity presents itself. He’s the poster child for ‘leap before you look.’ Their assignment? Head up the security detail for a Presidential reception at an art museum. Simple, right? Until a worker cuts himself and bleeds on an ancient Aztec stone head which comes to life and puts the worker under a murderous, hypnotic spell. Yeah, I hate when that happens. Warehouse 13 is SCI FI Channel’s newest dramedy adventure series. It’s sort of Friday the 13th: The Series meets Eureka with a little Chuck thrown in for good measure. It’s heavy on humor but it’s not lacking in angst and action and that’s a winning combo. McClintock and Kelly aren’t exactly Mulder and Scully, but by mid-pilot the banter finds a nice rhythm that should get even better as the series progresses. In the pilot episode, Myka and Pete are sent to South Dakota as either a reward or punishment for their actions at the museum the night before. They arrive in the middle of nowhere and are greeted by Artie Nielsen, played by the fabulous Saul Rubinek. There’s also a cow, a huge pile of cow manure, a boomerang football and cookies — and that’s all before they step inside the building. He leads them through a door carved into a mountain, down hallways laden with explosive charges and out on to a balcony with a sweeping view of the inside of Warehouse 13. The screener copy I watched didn’t have the completed special effects, but from what little I saw, that first look at the full scope of the warehouse is going to be killer (think National Treasure). Warehouse 13 is an enormous underground repository for objects that have powers, be they magical, supernatural or alien. Artie takes Myka and Pete on a fun and fascinating tour of the warehouse on a cart designed by Thomas Edison that runs on human power and it’s shades of Willy Wonka. So little to do, so much time! Stop. Reverse that. Moving on! The objects currently stored in the warehouse are both ingenious and wacky. For example, there’s an Aladdin’s lamp that produces ferrets if you wish for something you can’t have. And then there’s Houdini’s wallet, which “escapes” from the warehouse by hiding itself in Myka’s briefcase. Since the warehouse was built many moons ago, many of the “high tech” systems are very Jules Verne in nature, including Farnsworth — the old-fashioned 2-way video tablets they all use to communicate. (SciFi Channel sent me my own Farnsworth as you can see in these photos.) Artie also uses a turn-of-the-century typewriter keyboard to run his modern computer and then there’s the Tesla gun, which uses energy to disable as well as wipe out short-term memory. It’s touches like these that make this series so intriguing. After the tour, Artie settles the two agents into the local B&B where things are also not as they seem. Ever the rolling stone, Pete takes easily to the new assignment, while stodgy Myka keeps calling her boss demanding a transfer back to DC. But there are forces at work here that are higher than the head of the Secret Service and we come to find out that Pete and Myka have special abilities that even they are not aware of. Throughout the pilot we’re given hints about the backgrounds of not only the two agents but Artie himself. Pete may have drown his sorrows in alcohol after a death in the family while Myka is fighting a deeper, darker secret involving the death of a partner and, I suspect, a lover. Once the set-up is complete, Myka and Pete are given their first assignment for Warehouse 13. They’re sent to interview Cody (Dillon Casey, MVP) a college student who went from straight A’s to pounding on his girlfriend for no apparent reason. They find the boy in the local lock-up but when they start questioning him he begins muttering in ancient Italian just before he rips free of his chains and attacks! Seems the boy’s behavior is the result of coming in contact with a cursed object. Now all Pete and Myka have to do is find and neutralize the item before it incites a whole community of college kids to kill. The second half of the pilot goes from humor to horrific as one of the characters takes a gasoline shower then sets himself on fire. (Supernatural, anyone?) And there’s no joking at all as Pete and Myka close in on the poor possessed creature who is compelled to show the world just how much love hurts. The dramatic, action-packed ending is just what the series needs to balance out the comedic opening. Overall, Warehouse 13 is clever, fun and intriguing. If they continue in the style of the pilot, then we’ll be presented with a new, powerful object each week. It will be our job to puzzle out what the item is, where it came from, and what exactly is the nature of the curse. Then Myka, Pete, and Artie will swoop in, neutralize the beast and all will be well with the world. Add to that a list of stellar guest stars such as Tricia Helfer, Joe Flanigan and James Naughton (see the full list here) and I’d say SCI FI Channel has found a sparkly, new gem, hidden among the ancient artifacts that are stored in Warehouse 13. There has been an increasing amount of advertisement for this new show. I sense that W13 has a bit of Indiana Jones and "The Librarian" type adventure contained within. I've always liked those kinds of historical, adventurous, magical/mystical type shows/movies. I am looking forward to it.

Edit:
The Challenges of Warehouse 13
- Quote:
-
Last week, I was on a very lengthy conference call with the people behind Warehouse 13. Lengthy, because these guys bantered like brothers and sisters. There were so many jokes and barbs flying between Exec Producers Jack Kenny and David Simpkins and stars Eddie McClintock and Joanne Kelly, I don’t know how the transcriptionist kept it all straight! They were a delight to listen to and I’ll be giving you the highlights as we head toward the premiere of Warehouse 13 on July 7.
First up, producer Jack Kenny talks about the challenges of breathing life into Warehouse 13.
“Any new series involves similar challenges, you know, where are we going to go, are we going to arc out the first season or is each episode going to be individual? What [are we] learning about these characters and these people.
One of the things we did was we brought Saul and Jo and Eddie into the writer’s room and we all sat together and we had a session. And we talked about the characters and let them talk about the characters, we talked about them personally, what do they like, what do they do, what are their hobbies, do any of them speak languages or play instruments. You know, what are their relationships with family members and things so that we could sort of mine who they were as individuals.
My approach has always been that - every show I’ve ever done is a family show whether it’s a workplace comedy or an actual family show. And so in building this family of this brother and sister and father team that we’ve got going we wanted to sort of bring who they were to the roles.
Because, once an actor takes on a role, they bring who they are to it so you want to mold that role to them. And we were all very fortunate in that these guys were so much like these characters to start with and David in crafting the pilot I think really made it a nice fit for Jo and Eddie to slip into these parts and Saul as well.
So our challenges were finding the directions to take these characters in where they could grow and learn about each other and the relationships could deepen. I’m starting to call this show so many things. Now I think I’m calling it an action adventure proceduromedy.”

This one has me curious enough to try and tune in... I’ll be watching. I’m hoping there is a good combination of funny, quirky and non-romantic dynamics between the two main stars.

Which supernatural objects you'll see—and one you won't—in Warehouse 13
- Quote:
-
Forget those old Ark of the Covenant and Holy Grail relics that Indiana Jones used to obsess over. In SCI FI Channel's upcoming Warehouse 13, Secret Service agents Pete Lattimer (Eddie McClintock) and Myka Bering (Joanne Kelly) have a more eclectic group of artifacts to track down.
"I would have to say that my favorite episode so far has been Lewis Carroll's mirror, probably because it was the biggest acting challenge," Kelly told reporters in a recent conference call. "It was a huge challenge, and it was a lot of fun. I got to kick up my heels a little bit. So that's probably been my favorite, along with the fact that I'm such a Lewis Carroll fan and have been for years and years. ... Through the Looking-Glass and [Alice's Adventures] in Wonderland are two of my favorite books, so that was really kind of special."
For co-star McClintock, it was the items that stretched his acting muscles that proved the most enjoyable.
"'Breakdown,' where we end up kind of trapped in the warehouse, was a favorite for me, because it was so much fun and we just had such a great time," McClintock said. "And there was a lot of physical stuff for me to do, which is just stuff that I love to do. I love physical comedy. I love being able to do it, and hopefully I do it well. And then there was 'Burnout,' where we discover this artifact called the Spine of the Saracen. I won't get too specific, but it was an episode for me where I really got to explore where I am right now as an actor, who I am as an actor, and so that was kind of the biggest challenge."
After saving the life of the president, the two agents find themselves abruptly transferred to Warehouse 13: a massive, top-secret storage facility in windswept South Dakota that houses every strange artifact, mysterious relic, fantastical object and supernatural souvenir ever collected by the U.S. government. The Warehouse's caretaker, Artie (Saul Rubinek), charges Pete and Myka with chasing down reports of supernatural and paranormal activity in search of new objects to cache at the Warehouse, as well as helping him to control the warehouse itself.
"We keep coming up with cool areas to explore in the warehouse, too," executive producer Jack Kenny said. "We've got the Dark Vault coming up, where the super-dangerous stuff is kept. We've got the Gooery, where the purple goo is pumped throughout the warehouse to keep the objects in line with themselves. Our production designer, Franco De Cotiis, is just a genius. Every week we're on an entirely different set, an entirely different location, and he builds these things, these big mechanical scary-looking things, that are just the coolest stuff to work with, and it just looks amazing."
Kenny also praised cinematographer Derick Underschultz. "They have created this incredible world, every week we throw new stuff at them, and they create more stuff," he said. "It's amazing."
Other parts of the Warehouse include the mysterious bronze sector, Kenny said. "We've got this area where the most frightening people in the world have been preserved, people you never heard of: Not the Hitlers, but the people that would have become the Hitlers," he said.
The creative team did put one particular artifact on the back burner. "There's an artifact that we've been kicking around the writers' room for quite a while, Hitler's microphone," executive producer David Simkins said. "And, yeah, I've got to tell you, it's a really interesting concept to sort of take something from history that we're all very aware of and the incredible, tragic worldwide consequences of that. But what would happen if somebody got a hold of that microphone, and it possessed some sort of ability or power to transfer the ability to convince people to do very, very wrong things? It was an artifact that circled the writers' room quite a bit, and I think it's still circling."
The writers have one guiding principle with regard to the artifacts they will build an episode around. "It really comes down to what artifacts can we explore that will reflect on our two characters in a really cool and interesting way," Simkins said, adding: "If we can do an artifact that really sort of forces Pete and Myka to look at themselves, look at the world around them in a different way, or to get the audience to sort of reconsider something, then we know we've landed on our artifact that we can run with. It really comes down to the artifact serving the story, as opposed to letting the artifact run the story."
Warehouse 13 will premiere Tuesday with a two-hour pilot starting at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. I know eventually they will throw in the Ark of the Covenant and Holy Grail.

Tonight's the night! Two hour premiere starting at 9:00pm EST.
Edit: Avoid reading any further if you aren't interested in a review/spoilers...
Overall, I liked the Pilot. I'm willing to give the show a chance for the time being. I liked the Pete Lattimer character. He seemed to become more interesting as the series progressed. I was a little concerned when they started him off as the typical womanizer type. Myka became less interesting as the series progressed. I enjoyed the beginning scenes at the museum and when she first arrived at WH13. After that, the character seemed to become more of a dud. I think the artifacts in the Warehouse had more personality than her.
I didn't like the Artie character. I think they are trying to go with the quirky, intelligent type. He just came off too much on the bumbling end. Also, I found his personality in general to be a bit dry.
The Pilot itself did begin to drag starting about 45 minutes into the program. I think they could have condensed this down to about 1 1/2 hours and it would have been better paced. The plot and the story were still somewhat interesting.
I thought there would be a bit more comedy back and forward dialogue between Pete and Myka, than what we saw. I hope to see more in the future. My hope is that they keep their relationship on the friendly side. No romantic "will they or won't the" BS. I get sick of male/female leads being placed in that position.
I liked the props, most of the sets and the show's "atmosphere".
I would give this Pilot a “B” grade.

It's being repeated several times over the next few days. I figured it probably would. A lot is riding on the success of this show it seems. I've never seen this much promotion for a series on that channel. I opened a "People Magazine" up recently and on the inside cover was a full page advertisement. Ads in a lot of other places too.
The show has a lot of potential. I think a change to their normal one hour format will help with the pacing. The character development/dynamics will need to develop. That sometimes takes a little time.
Did you end up watching the Pilot, GC?

No- I was busy last night but I TIVO'd it and will probably watch it this weekend. I plan to watch it again this weekend too. I taped it so I can zap through the commercials.
Edit: I read last night that W13 pulled in 3.5 million viewers for the Pilot. The highest cable ratings for that night. We’ll see if they can maintain that amount. I suspect it will drop a million or so by the next one or two episodes.

I watched this, finally, last night. Reminds me a bit of the old "Friday the 13th: The Series".
Characters seem somewhat derivative so far. We have our Mulder (maverick but brilliant "believer") and our Scully (by the book, serious type) and the quirky smart guy, who is a bit of a bumbler. The last one would be fine if it weren't so common to make the quirky smart guy a bumbler. "Fringe" has done pretty well with their quriky smart guy, this show should take the hint.
Looks like we will be getting a blend of magic and "cutting edge" science. We have some mysterious background characters (i.e. Mrs. Frederick and her friends from the photo) that could tie into a potential conspiracy if the producers decide to develop one (if they haven't already planned it, but I bet they have...).
If this show is done well, it could be a lot of fun. If not, then I am sure they have something else in development to replace it.
Might make a good pair with "Sanctuary" when (or if?) that series should return.

Season two of Sanctuary is set to return in October I believe.
I decided to watch the WH13 Pilot again tonight. I found that I liked it a little better not having to sit through all of those commercials. I am curious about Mrs. Frederick. She seems to not age very fast. I wonder what she is (if not human), or what artifact she is using to extend her life?
I agree with you Swidden about Artie. I didn't click with the character portrayal. That whole scene that showed him preparing to make a beeline for the back of the warehouse was a little dopey. Doesn't he have anything else to move around the warehouse in besides the slow motion Edison automobile? Which is a little neat by the way. If it had really been invented.
I think they wanted Artie to be comic relief. Pete seems to be better at that though.

I think they wanted Artie to be comic relief. Pete seems to be better at that though. That tends to be the case most of the time. If you look at how effective Artie is when he first appears at the museum, using the gadgets/artifacts, he comes across as someone who knows what he is doing. They could still make the character eccentric and amusing without resorting to slapstick and pratfall cliche's.

That is, they were different initially to how they were during the second half.
Artie and Myka started out okay, but I didn’t care too much for either character by the end. I was a little iffy on Pete in the beginning, but he turned out to be one of the better characters. IMO.
I do hope they backtrack and portray Artie more in an intelligent but slightly quirky way.

I'm hoping they work out the kinks and the show turns out to be good.

Coming up on WH13...
Coming up on Warehouse 13

- Quote:
-
Look at this duo! There’s something about this pairing that makes me think we’re in for a wild ride. That’s Saul Rubinek, the curator of Warehouse 13 and with him is the charming Allison Scagliotti. She’ll be joining the cast in a few weeks.
Before that, we’ve got Battlestar Galactica’s Tricia Helfer guesting in tomorrow night’s episode about a band of bank robbers who don’t need guns to subdue a crowd.
For you Joe Flanigan fans, the former Stargate Atlantis star will appear in the August 4 episode “Elements” along with one of my other favorite actors, James Naughton.
Warehouse 13 airs Tuesdays 9:00 on Syfy.

Edit: Tonight's episode starts at 9:00pm EST and is titled "Resonance".

I thought "Resonance" was a good follow up episode to the Pilot. I think Pete and Myka are starting to develop an interesting dynamic/partnership. Pete is playful, but still portrayed as intelligent. Myka seems to be thawing (her personality) a bit.
The bank robbers were breaking the law, but I can certainly see how Pete and Myka would sympathize with them.
It looked kind of funny seeing them in that black get-up with the speakers attacked to the coat, and record player hanging from their body.
Imagine the damage that could have been done with that record if they really wanted...beyond just robbing banks. It really throws people into an altered oblivious state of being.
