The victims would have been at Deland Middle School which is about a 15 minute drive from where I live. I'm glad they were caught. Maybe they can help provide some insight into why some kids do this. It's scary though that this was brewing so close to home. The story |

This is terrible. Thank goodness they were caught before they hurt anyone. I think some of the comments made by one of the boys and the girl bring to the forefront how frustrated some kids are becoming with being picked on at school. However, instead of dealing with that frustration in a more positive manner, they are resorting to the most drastic “solution” to their problems. Is this a school that you would have potentially sent your daughter to? |

It's unfortunate that the first school shooting ever took place. Otherwise, kids being picked on probably wouldn't even consider it. Now they have been given the idea and it seems more and more bullying victims are choosing this. We need to do more to both stop the bullying and help the victims to deal with it more constructively. No, there is no chance that my daughter would attend that school. But somehow that doesn't make me feel much better. It seems we never know where then next one of these is going to be.

I think we have already talked about the family end of why kids are not coping as well with problems, but the other end of that is the erosion of structure in school IMO. Principals and teachers are afraid to discipline kids (bullies) in school. Or if they do, it is not effective. Afraid because parents are always threatening to sue schools, and the fear that the problem kids will bring a gun to school and use it. Or it could just be they just don't see the discipliine making a difference anymore (throwing their hands up). The thing about the guns though, is it appears that the picked on kids are the ones resorting to gun use, and not the bullies. Good or bad, schools are now the parents of many kids. They aren't getting the structure at home. They need to get it somewhere. |
