This story just ticks me off.

story

Arrington's lawyer Michael Rosenbluth said his client had been convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol in the year prior to the fatal accident that killed L'Ecuyer. He said she had been driving with a suspended license when she killed the bicyclist.

story

The jury acquitted Arrington of manslaughter, the most serious charge against her, and convicted her of negligent homicide.

I guess I wasn't at the trial to hear all the facts, but when someone has already been convicted of drunk driving, is illegally driving on a suspended license, and ends up killing someone, then they made a voluntary choice that cost another person their life. In my mind, that should at least be second degree murder. The phone call is beside the point, but makes me wish even more that she wasn't acquitted of manslaughter. Ten years, hmmph! She'll probably be out in 2...

That’s extremely cruel on her part. Also stupid of her to speak in that manner on a phone at the jail. Its pretty widely known that jails/prisons record communications. At least the tape was admissible in court.

She probably will get out way before she reaches the 10.5 years mark. “Good behavior” and all that. Hopefully every time she comes up for parole the family members of the man she killed will play that tape for the parole board.

Accidents are forgiveable. But this was more than just an accident, and her words on the tape of the phone call indicate that she wasn't feeling too badly about it. It would be most difficult for this man's family to forgive her.
