Heath Ledger found Dead in NYC

Quote:

NEW YORK - Heath Ledger was found dead Tuesday at a downtown Manhattan residence, and police said drugs may have been a factor. He was 28. NYPD spokesman Paul Browne said Ledger had an appointment for a massage at the Manhattan apartment believed to be his home. The housekeeper who went to let him know the masseuse had arrived found him dead at 3:26 p.m.

A large crowd of paparazzi and gawkers began gathering Tuesday evening outside the building on an upscale block in SoHo, where several police officers guarded the door.

The Australian-born actor was nominated for an Oscar for "Brokeback Mountain," where he met Michelle Williams in 2005. The two had lived in Brooklyn and had a daughter, Matilda, until they split up last year.

He most recently appeared in "I'm Not There," in which he played one of the many incarnations of Bob Dylan  as did Cate Blanchett, whose performance in that film earned an Oscar nomination Tuesday for best supporting actress.

Ledger was to appear as the Joker this year in "The Dark Night," a sequel to 2005's "Batman Begins." He's had starring roles in "A Knight's Tale" and "The Patriot," and played the suicidal son of Billy Bob Thornton in "Monster's Ball."

Ledger grew up in Perth, and began doing amateur theater at age 10. At 16, he moved to Sydney to pursue an acting career, quickly landing TV movie roles and guest spots on Australian television.

After several independent films and a starring role in the short-lived Fox TV series "Roar," Ledger moved to Los Angeles and costarred in "10 Things I Hate About You," a teen comedy reworking of "The Taming of the Shrew."

Offers for other teen flicks came his way, but Ledger turned them down, preferring to remain idle than sign on for projects he didn't like.

"It wasn't a hard decision for me," Ledger told the Associated Press in 2001. "It was hard for everyone else around me to understand. Agents were like, `You're crazy,' my parents were like, `Come on, you have to eat.'"

Oh my. :(

This is very sad. I have enjoyed watching him in many roles.

The first movie I ever saw him in was, "10 Things I Hate About You".

"Roar" was another early role I liked him in. That was a short lived show.

Several others as well.

Edit: One news report said he was found in the apartment of Mary Kate Olsen. No confirmation on that or about the drugs part, or if they were ilicit drugs.

I enjoyed him in "The Patriot".

I'm so sorry to hear he passed away. The news was all over the cable channels last night. There's going to be a lot of speculation as to how this promising young actor died.

RIP Heath Ledger.

Does anyone know if he finished shooting "The Dark Night"?

I believe I read yesterday that filming had been completed.

There is mention now that the drug found by him was "Ambien", which I'm sure most of you know is a prescription medication that helps you sleep.

I found these comments by him in an interview very interesting...

Ledger said in an interview in November that "Dark Knight" and last year's "I'm Not There," took a heavy toll. He said he "stressed out a little too much" during the Dylan film, and had trouble sleeping while portraying the Joker, whom he called a "psychopathic, mass-murdering, schizophrenic clown with zero empathy."

"Last week I probably slept an average of two hours a night," Ledger told The New York Times. "I couldn't stop thinking. My body was exhausted, and my mind was still going." He said he took two Ambien pills, which only worked for an hour.

His death screams accidental to me at this point, but its still hard to say without more information.

I first noticed Heath Ledger in "Roar" as well -- another series that had potential but was cut too short.
His death at such a young ages is tragic.

Most definitely. However, whenever that happens and one of the stars goes on to do bigger and better projects, I am usually glad the show was cancelled. Or at least, not terribly sorry. You never know if they would have taken the same path if it hadn't happened.

The same thing happened to Jessica Alba. After Dark Angel was cancelled, she went on to do a lot of movies.

Btw, I read the other day that the Westboro Church of Hate plans to protest at Ledger’s memorial service because of his roll in Brokeback Mountain.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with that "church," they like to protest at military funerals.

I think what they do is despicable.

The official word is that it was an accidental prescription drug overdose...

He had taken a combination of five prescription drugs (two pain relievers, Valium, Xanax and Restoril), and one over the counter sleeping aid at the same time.

Ledger's death highlights prescription drug issues

I'm speechless. I'm mortified. :realmad:

Xanas, Valium, Restoril PLUS an over the counter sleeping aid.

*sigh*

Didn't anyone ever tell these folks in church that God is more about love and acceptance and forgiveness than about exclusion and prejudice?

Apparently not. I think its more a matter of their "leader" leading them astray.
