Pakistan's Bhutto killed in attack
She was shot and then the gunman blew himself up. Others were killed as well. Madness. |

I heard about this on my way into work this morning.
There will probably be some backlash for this too from her supporters.

I have to wonder if there is any hope for that region. However, if some progress hadn't been made, a woman like Bhutto would have never made it to the position of PM in the first place. Political and social change for the better may eventually happen in that region, but I don't think we will see much progress in my lifetime. |

Unfortunately it has already been many, many lifetimes that that region of the world has experienced such political unrest and violence. It will probably be many more lifetimes before it ceases. |

I've been glued to the TV since I heard of this tragedy. I find it awesome that she was the first woman to be elected to lead a Muslim nation. Although her two terms were marred by controversy and claims of corruption, I must give her credit for trying to bring some semblance of Democracy to Pakistan. I find it fascinating that despite the discrimination they have against women in some Muslim nations that Benazir Bhutto, a Harvard and Oxford educated woman, was able to position herself politically and become the Prime Minister of Pakistan not once but twice. She could have easily chosen another path, but I suppose she believed this was her destiny. I read somewhere that there is one younger sister left. Both her brothers were killed as well trying to further their political aspirations. It is ironic how a country like Pakistan, where the culture is suppressive and oppressive to women , can produce a woman prime minister and we here in the West, a culture that supposedly encourages women to be strong, cannot produce a woman president.... yet. |

She was a strong woman to choose the path she did in that part of the world. I think any other of her family members would be wise to think long and hard before also getting into politics (if they haven't already done so). There are extremists who appear to be after her entire family.
Yes, but unlike in Pakistan (or most other Muslim nations), we have achieved equality in most other respects, and its only a matter of time before we elect a woman President. I'll take our current situation over there's anyday. |
