Read first: Setting To have a better understanding of the Common Area layout, click here “You’ll lose housepoints if you don’t stop whatever you’re doing,” a girl in pigtail warned Henri. He stopped on his tracks and grimaced at Melissa. Yes, he has been pacing up and down the common room for half an hour now, which could be quite distracting. But, that shouldn’t bother anyone, especially if some boys were playing exploding snap like a bunch of 10-year-olds. Bloody prefects, Henri thought angrily as he sat on a couch near the fireplace. He looked at Melissa again. She seemed too absorbed with studying to notice the boys who are now shouting like barbarians. Feeling mutinous, the young man diverted his attention to three second-year girls slumped on the carpeted floor. They were exchanging the hottest gossip on Hogwarts, and other ‘girl stuff’ that, naturally, only they could understand. Unfortunately, the whole room could hear what they have to say. “D’you know,” the long-haired one began, “I saw Jacqueline snogging someone yesterday.” Henri’s heart jolted. He knows Jac. They used to be friends. “Really?! Who?” the other two chorused. Their eyes glinted with excitement. Henri’s ears perked up. He, too, is curious about Jac’s new boyfriend. “Henry,” the first one answered. Henri froze and blinked. He could feel his fellow Hufflepuffs staring at him. It seemed that the world paused. He sank low in his chair, cheeks scarlet from embarrassment. He couldn’t have done that. He spent the whole day with his friends yesterday. “Henry?” the other repeated, oblivious to the fact that people are listening in on their conversation. “Henry Bubbletown, the Ravenclaw guy who talks to himself?” “The very same,” the reporter nodded. “Weird,” the third girl breathed in amazement. And the world started to move again as if no interruption took place. Henri felt a stab of annoyance at everyone - the girls and their big mouth, Melissa, and himself. How stupid was he to assume that he’s the only Henri at Hogwarts? Wanting to leave the room, Henri looked at the clock on the wall above the fireplace. It was 8:30 in the evening. It’s time to prepare for the Rebels’ meeting. The sixth-year Hufflepuff inhaled, stood up, and headed to the room’s exit that leads to the common area. Few couples were nestled on the couch. Good, Henri thought. The plan could work under these conditions. The couples will be so busy with each other that they will not even notice that Henri has been there. Henri perched himself on the sofa. True, it felt awkward to be surrounded with kissing couples, but being here is better than being inside their common room. He glanced at the clock above the portrait of a group of monks. It’s 8:45. Hogwarts will change its guards at 9:00 in the evening. Every two hours, the guards patrolling the Common Area are changed. For fifteen minutes, the area will be clear of Ministry of Magic’s official. Not all students know this fact. Luckily, someone from the Rebels heard of this scheduled rotation. It’s 8:55, five more minutes of waiting. He stood up, his heart throbbing painfully against his chest. The boy glanced at the entrance surreptitiously. He could hear the guards on the other side. There was shuffling of feet, and their footsteps were slowly fading away. Henri looked around, and gulped. All couples were quite busy. One of the monks in the portrait was looking at him as if he knows of Henri’s plan. The Hufflepuff boy ignored bald man, and walked calmly towards the entrance. Fifteen minutes was all he has to escape. Fifteen minutes of freedom. He opened the entrance, and peeked outside. The hallway was clear of guards. He stepped over the threshold, closed the door and ran swiftly, heading to the stairs that lead to their meeting room. |
