Family and History (in paragraph form) Unlike most children, Henri Playton did not grow up with his parents; it was his maternal grandmother, Frida Greenway, who raised him. According to his grandmother, a small and plump old lady whose bright blue eyes twinkle behind a pair of square spectacles, Henri was only two years old when his parents flew to Africa to aide young witches and wizards suffering from violence and malnutrition. At that time, a very powerful dark wizard had taken control over Africa’s Ministry of Magic and gave harsh commands that greatly affected the magical community, particularly half-bloods and muggleborns. When Wendeline and Theodore, who were both working at Young Witches and Wizards’ Welfare Foundation as an assistant in Research Division and head of Food Provisions Department, respectively, learned about the crisis, they were deeply concerned and came up with a major decision: entrust their only son to Wendeline’s mother. At first, Henri’s mother, a petite, pretty and freckled woman with long, curly, blonde hair and blue eyes, was reluctant to leave Henri with Frida; while Theodore, a tall, stocky, bearded man with wild mane, persuaded his wife to go with him to Africa. He reasoned out that the set-up was just temporary, and that they will come back for their two-year-old boy after a few months. Finally, Wendeline acceded, and both have traveled from Manchester to Newcastle, England where Frida was residing. And although they did not return to England after Africa’s struggle has finally ended, Wendy and Teddy continued to correspond with the young boy, sharing the success of their mission and enclosing photos of young witches and wizards whom they have helped. Sadly, as years went by, the arrival of letters became seldom until they stopped writing at all. Henri, who was already accustomed to his parent’s absence, was unperturbed. He had accepted the fact that the only family he has got was the one he was already in—his grandmother and relatives. For him, Frida is his mother, Uncle Rodolphus his father, and his cousins are his brothers and sisters. They were the ones who cared for and loved him. He learned manners, numbers, letters, and even magic from Frida. Her excellent cooking always brings him delight; her mellow voice is ever ready to lecture him every time he is in trouble; and her homemade remedies never fails to relieve him of discomfort. Uncle Rodolphus’ jokes cause Henri to roll onto the floor, laughing his heart out. And his cousins were his playmates. His life, although far from perfect, was satisfactory. On his 11th birthday, Henri received two letters. One was from Hogwarts, inviting him to study at the Wizarding School. Henri and his family (relatives) were ecstatic, but not surprised. Henri has manifested his magical abilities when he was only three years old. It was anticipated; all of Henri’s relatives, and even his parents attended the celebrated school. The other was from his parents, informing him that he was now a big brother to a baby girl named Aanisna. They also expressed their wish that Henri follow them to Africa. They suggested that he attend the African Wizarding School. The boy has been presented with a difficult choice. But, he has already determined the path that he will take: stay at Newcastle where his heart truly belongs. |

Roleplay (at least two paragraphs, or ten sentences) “What is a patronus, mama?” a young boy asked. His blue eyes directed to an old lady, who smiled kindly at him. “A patronus is a force that will protect you from dementors,” his grandmother replied. She continued knitting. “But what is a dementor, mama?” Frida laid down the knitting sticks. She flashed another smile at the boy who seemed determined to know what a patronus is. “Dementors are hooded creatures. They take all the happiness from you.” “They take???” Henri asked, his eyes round with disbelief. “Happiness, dear.” “But, is there a way to stop them from making me unhappy?” his brows were furrowed, and mouth slightly open as he waited for his grandmother’s reply. “Yes, there is. It’s a bit complicated, dear...” The old lady patted his grandson’s head as if telling him to stop asking questions. “What is it? Can you teach me how?” Henri was now standing in front of Frida. His face was bright as it reflected his excitement. “You’re too young to learn it, Henri.” She adjusted her eyeglasses, and placed both hands on Henri’s shoulders. “It’s okay. Can you tell me, please?” The young boy pouted, one way of working his charms. Frida didn’t say something for a while. She seemed to be considering about teaching Henri the Patronus Charm. She knew that the young boy won’t be able to conjure a corporeal patronus, but she would like to see him try. “Okay, but don’t get upset if it doesn’t work.” Henri leaped with joy. He grinned at his grandmother, and then ran to the kitchen. Frida was startled by his behavior. But a few seconds after she discovered why; Henri was holding her wand, which she left on the counter. The old lady laughed heartily. What a boy! “Here’s your wand, mama,” Henri gave the magic wand to Frida, and sat down. He watched her with rapt attention. Henri’s grandmother took a deep breath and closed her eyes. She then spoke, “You must think of a happy memory, then say ‘Expecto Patronum’!” As she uttered the incantation, a four-legged animal appeared. Henri was gaping at the unicorn as it cantered towards him. Heart beating fast, he held out his hand reaching for the Patronus. Then the unicorn disappeared; he almost touched it. His face fell with disappointment. When he turned to look at his grandmother, he saw that she was watching him. “It’s not solid,” he muttered, gaze averted to the floor. “Well, it’s not. But it will still protect you, dear.” Frida’s voice quavered. “Would you like to try?” Henri, although disappointed with his new discovery, lifted his chin up and stared at Frida. “Yes, mama.” She handed him her wand, told him to close his eyes and follow her instructions. The young boy obeyed, and finally mumbled, “Inspector Patronoooom! And as he opened his eyes, a wisp of cloud erupted from his wand. It vanished instantly. Henri frowned. “Where is it mama?” he asked, looking around to see if his patronus went somewhere else. “It vanished, dear.” His grandma replied. Her eyes were watery. She was somehow blaming herself for his grandson’s frustration. “But why? Why didn’t I see it?” “Well, as I’ve said, it’s too complicated. Even adults have difficulty in conjuring a patronus.” The young boy seemed satisfied with Frida’s explanation. He laid the wand on the sofa, and hugged the old lady. Henri’s grandmother was surprised, but returned the gesture anyway. “Thank you mama for teaching me how. I’ll do it next time. You’ll see.” He showed her his crooked teeth. “Just don’t go sneaking at my room, trying out my wand.” The boy grinned. He was quite embarrassed and curious. “How did you know?” he inquired. “Well, that’s a secret.” |

An Interview (First Person point of view, optional) What is your favorite food? I like lamb chops, and sweet potatoes. If you were an Animagus, what kind of animal would you be? I'd like to be a kneazle. You know, they're intelligent and lovable. And if I'm a kneazle, sneaking would be a breeze. Have you ever been in-love? Hahaha! Yes, I've been in-love a couple of times. Would you consider dating someone outside your own house? Why or why not? Um, yes. I do hate labeling people, you know. So, I try my best to know them and if I like what I see, then maybe I could ask them to go out with me. If you could change one thing about your appearance, what will it be? I dunno if I'd like to make any changes with how I look. I kind of like how I am right now. I'm still getting attention from some girls, so I assume I'm quite okay-looking. How often do you lose your temper? Seldom. I try not to lose control. If I'm mad at someone or something, I'd probably yell and do something stupid. What is your biggest regret? My biggest regret has yet to come. If you encountered a boggart, what shape will it assume and why? I've encountered one during a DADA class. It turned out that I was afraid of banshee. Up until now, I don't know why. What happy memory do you need to produce a corporeal patronus? Ah... I'm going to think of my seventh birthday. I had a blast. There were balloons and delicious food. I'm not fond of the cake, though. But, my grandmother planned the whole thing, so it was perfect. How do you manifest anger, pressure, and consternation? When I'm angry, I act rather rashly. If pressured, I try to keep my cool. As for the consternation part, I keep quiet, and brood for a while. Are you easy to please? I'd like to think so. |
