Read Today's Daily Prophet: Knights of Walpurgis attack Hogwarts; Belleford steps down as Hogwarts closes until further notice
Welcome to Hogwarts Interactive Role Play, one of the net's best in Harry Potter and Hogwarts role plays. We hope you enjoy your visit.

Here at Hogwarts our students are currently in their Seventh Year. Last year, the war against the Knights crescendoed into a direct attack against the school. Disappearances are still reported (or not) daily, and the Dark Lord and his Knights of Walpurgis have succeeded in spreading their message of "do as thou will" far and wide across the globe. Magical Law Enforcement, which is now the only authority in the wizarding world under Martial Law, has responded by tightening security, controlling the media, and strictly enforcing curfews and other laws. Their control is damaging to the people's freedom, and their hierarchy is a suspicious lot. It is clear that some members of the MLE like their new found power a bit too much, others see it necessary, but all are in serious danger of being consumed by it. But with the picture of just what Azariah Amaranth is after becoming ever clearer, and a third player in the form of a group called SAVIOR entering the scene, what will the MLE do next to ensure that they've got the situation under control?

The Elementium, the Higher Plane that had once been hidden just beyond the veil in the Department of Mysteries, and the Deathly Hallows. The pieces of the puzzle have been identified, but what picture do they make?

Today is Day 1 of Year Seven. Students have had time to recover from the Knight's attack, and are beginning to reluctantly return to the walls of Hogwarts. The safety of the school has been diminished, bringing up the question everyone must ask. Are you safe anywhere these days? It's up to each individual to decide their fate, where will you decide to go?

The Excursion to Azkaban; Year 7, Day 4, Azkaban Trip

Ray shrugged at Opal, Baker didn't seem to like anyone. Not really. Not that the Gryffindor paid more than a passing attention. He knew that the head of MLE had a way of getting under people's skin. It was easy enough to understand why, he supposed. Not feeling particularly attentive, for multiple reasons, Ray was largely dependent on his class mates to keep him from setting off another booby trap. At the mention of wards, however, he tried very hard to look for tell tale signs of incantation. None were forthcoming. It was Annie who noticed something wrong and his gaze, which had been roaming the ceiling, was quickly startled to the carpet lying before them. She was right though, there was something decidedly fishy about the lack of problems they'd had thus far. The carpet was a likely suspect. A Slytherin boy was quicker to respond than he was, however.

It seemed Ian was taking a few queues from their Professor. Or had he always been so abrasive? Though the explanation didn't make sense. He'd felt an indescribable pull, right before Annie had tugged him backwards. That wasn't natural. Partly, to come to his friend's defense and partly to cut her off from snapping back at their classmate, "I don't think it's as simple as floating over it." The Gryffindor made his point by summoning a rock and magicking it, with great momentum, over the rug in question. The result was startling. The carpet distorted, spiked upwards in a unexpected motion, following the trajectory of his rock. The ripple darted after the intrusive bit of rubble, rapidly outdistancing and swallowing the object. A few seconds later and it was as though nothing had happened. They'd learned about this, hadn't they? Of course they had. Unfortunately he couldn't remember anything beyond the fact that they were standing next to the world's most intuitive vacuum cleaner. "Can we destroy the carpet? Or maybe just roll it up as we move forward?" Sounded stupid, but no one else was saying anything.

The carpet jumped up and snagged Ray Jenning's rock out of the air and swallowed it. Ian blinked. How had he missed that one? He must be slipping.

"I was just about to test my theory," said Ian, "Good show, Jenning."

Okay, Ian. You're losing them. Why not try to be ni-ni--pleasant for a change?

"So it pulls anything that crosses its vicinity...honestly, my first inclination would be to find another way around," said Ian.

Ian grew up in a house that had dark enchantments all over it. Chateau de Pointe du Lac had all manner of dark artifacts, hidden passagways, catacombs, treasure rooms, all protected by powerful magic. Once when Ian was five, Ian's mother had been neglecting to watch him carefully, Ian had taken a wrong turn when looking for the kitchens. Instead of the kitchens, Ian ended up in a part of the house he'd never seen before. Ian remembered the dark wood trimmings of that hall, particularly memorable because they were carved in the likeness of dragons, and had come to life and attacked Ian! There must have been something important in that room, but Ian never saw it. The last thing he remembered, oddly enough, was Alphonse coming up the hallway and stopping the wooden serpents with a spell. Come to think of it, what was Alphonse doing there?

No matter. Ian felt that Chateau de Pointe du Lac rivaled Hogwarts and Gringotts in terms of the various ways one could be hacked, mangled, burned, eaten, cursed, and lost forever. But Ian had become adept at roaming both Hogwarts and his home and so had always found ways to get around the the dangerous stuff. If there was one thing Ian knew about dangerous traps, it was that there was always a back door.

I heard the sound of a thunder, it roared out a warnin'
I heard the roar of a wave that could drown the whole world
I heard one hundred drummers whose hands were a-blazin'
I heard ten thousand whisperin' and nobody listenin'
I heard one person starve, I heard many people laughin'
Heard the song of a poet who died in the gutter

Opal was quiet. She didn't really know that many people here. Beth she recognized from a couple of times of her being pointed out to her at the Hufflepuff table. Alistair, obviously, she'd talked to that morning. Annie she'd just met, and Ray she kind of knew. Whatever-his-name-was Slytherin she'd never met in her life, although to be honest he looked a little familiar.
Perhaps she was just being on her guard to much.
In any case, she simply didn't speak up a lot around people she didn't know. And she didn't know this guy. However, that didn't mean she wanted him dead.
If she had her speakers, she could have avoided this problem, dang it. She hoped he wasn't a pureblood supremacist. Or that he wouldn't make fun of her.
Finally, she chose her words carefully, tugged on his sleeve and spoke up. "I-I know the charm," she said quietly. "P-professor Baker mentioned-d it i-in class, once."
At Annie's hopeful look, she shook her head. "I-I can t-tell you g-guys the charm, but I-I can't-t perform i-it. L-last time I-I tried I-I stuttered during the i-incantation a-and s-set my h-hair on fire. Professor B-baker wasn't p-pleased.
It really hadn't been her finest moment, and she wasn't sure if they were there or not, much less if they remembered her. Never the less, a repeat performance wouldn't be the greatest idea. "I-I'd need m-my speakers," She mentioned as an afterthought, though she doubted they'd know what those were. She could also use some liquid courage, but that could cause.....ahem, interesting things to happen. "A-anyway, it's desine sugentem. " She made sure to say it slowly, so they got the pronunciation right. She was fairly certain someone in class had done it wrong, and it had ended up worse than her fire hair.

Ian turned his head when Opal spoke up. Ian gritted his teeth as he listened to Opal try her hardest to tell the group about the spell. Listening to Opal was like pulling teeth. The stuttering Gryffindor took ages too long to say the simplest things.

"Desine Sugentem," Ian repeated, making sure he got it right, "Okay. I'll try it. But if this backfires, I'm blaming you, Stutters McGee."

Ian didn't want the others to get hurt. His loyalty was still with Professor Belleford, and anything he could do to undermine the MLE was doing the right thing in his book. And he didn't have any backup. Tristan was gone, Addie was gone, Dave was gone. Belleford had been forced to step down. Ian was all that was left of the old guard. How had the relurctant Slytherin ended up in this position? Where was the brave Gryffindor like Lumineux to stand in front and take the hits while Ian manipulates safely from behind--or just runs away if he sees fit? She's not here, and it seems she's been replaced by Stutters McGee.

"Desine Sugentem," said Ian, waving his wand.

Nothing happened. At least, no indication that anything happened. Ian waved his wand again, the golden dragon wrapped around the shaft glinting in the faint torchlight.

"Accio rock," said Ian.

Ian raised his hand just as a rock flew into it. Ian looked at the rock, then at the carpet. Then, he tossed the rock at the hopefully, disenchanted rug. The rock sailed through the air, gradually losing altitude to bounce off the rug three times, harmlessly.

"Looks good," said Ian.

He took a few tentative steps towards the rug. Finally, after taking a deep breath, Ian set a foot on the rug. Nothing happened.

"I think we're good," said Ian, "Though I would recommend some better security measures to Azkaban. If its as simple as
remembering a counter-curse, then no wonder they've had breakouts."

"Nicely done." The Professor remarked, not sounding overly impressed. That much deliberation over something so simple? It made her fearful for what this lecture would turn into as they worked their way deeper into the prison. The wards would only get more difficult to deal with. for the students anyway. It wasn't hard to come to the conclusion that they weren't expected to dismantle any of Azkaban's actual defences. How, then, were they not triggering anything more serious? Had that even been taken into account? Hesitant to give more incentive to spot and dismantle wards than the overhanging threat of homework, she didn't offer any reward for the teamwork exhibited between the two houses. Stepping on Baker's toes was not very high on her priority list at the moment. "Go on then, we haven't got all day." A few of the students seemed hesitant to follow Ian's lead and she urged them forward.

The group continued down the hallway, Halle more wary after having almost stumbled head first into the carpet trap. Many such traps would litter their descent into the belly of the prison. The woman, not wanting to make a fool of herself, managed to discreetly steer clear of them without being utterly obvious as to what she was avoiding. Brock's lecture continued as they moved deeper into Azkaban. The Ravenclaw Head of House remained vigilant, in case she needed to intervene... or save someone from being swallowed into oblivion.

ooc/ Feel free to come up with/battle/accidentally trigger wards, etc etc... Beth's unsure when she'll be able to post so exercise creative freedom and have fun with it. The group is in their final year at Hogwarts so not all wards will be as easily dismantled as the carpet.

Alistair, not even remotely enjoying the descent, was starting to wonder if maybe he had a fear of enclosed spaces. How much rock was above their heads, now? Not to mention, nothing about the prison looked particularly sturdy. Like one false step and you'd be beating everyone to the bottom. Not that you'd be alive to feel any sense of victory. "Bit of an odd place for a statue." The Hufflepuff commented, they were still in the corridor. But given the utter lack of decoration thus far the humanoid chunk of metal seemed suspicious indeed. It seemed staged. Ali rather imagined it was. For the sake of the lesson? Either way, it looked dangerous. What with the sword and all. "Piertotum Locomotor." Probably silly of him, just going ahead and casting magic on the thing. But the urge to try and control the statue was a rather large one. Besides, there didn't seem to be any visible distinction as to what sort of enchantments were cast upon the thing and he wasn't about to go up and shake its hand.

The Hufflepuff was not particularly surprised when the spell didn't work. The statue seemed to absorb the shot of magic and the helmeted head turned, stoically, as though surveying the group. Sizing them up. Whoops. It was a lot slower than the gargoyle that had attacked them on the roof. Someone behind him shot a stunner at the thing. This seemed only to worsen their predicament. It moved faster, seeming to shake off invisible restraints before advancing towards them.

Annie frowned. "As you can see, Ian, I don't really think that worked." Annie respected Ian as a person, like she did everyone- that didn't mean she had to like him. "And don't be so rude to Opal- she got the spell right, didn't she?"
Suddenly, the statue by their side seemed almost......inviting......she wanted to control it......no, Annie hated controlling things by magic like that, this was wrong.....then she realized what kind of statue it was. Her eyes widened as Alistair started to recite the incantation for controlling the statue. "No! Don't...."
But before Annie could stop him, the statue was running toward them. Some idiot sent a stunner at it and it started running faster. Annie let off a string of curses under her breath, around what sounded suspiciously like another couple of curses in Hebrew. Why she knew anything in that language was a long story involving her mother and the SATs. And a good friend begging her not to make elementary Hebrew classes a real bore. "Idiot," She muttered, quickly flipping her wand into her palm. The gentle weight kind of soothed her.
"Declinavi magicae statua," she cast, focusing all her energy into casting a good-sized, milky white shield. The statue hit the shield, and it's innate magic blasted it back three feet.
"Come on," She muttered through clenched teeth. "Where's the damned chink?"
The thing, it seemed, would not let her find the area where she could send nicely placed reducto into.

Ray was starting to wish he'd stayed in bed sick this morning. This would be the second time some great looming statue had decided it wanted to bash their skulls in. And it seemed to be getting faster as it got closer-- Why was his mind so hopelessly blank? He was best at magic the involved growing things and serene environments. Way out of his element, he was quite content taking a fail and letting their instructors deal with the damn thing. "Brilliant." Whoops, had that been out loud? Of course it seemed to suck in every spell cast directly at it, but that didn't mean the statue absorbed everything that had been cast in its vicinity. Or... something? "Let's flip him around." The Gryffindor suggested, his wand targeting the carpet underneath the, momentarily stunned, statue. Suddenly able to think, now that the impending threat was lessened.

It seemed the blast from Annie's shield had taken out whatever juice it had gotten from the two spells cast upon it. Cool. Almost like it utilized the magic as fuel. He could vaguely recall learning about this. Very, very vaguely... Like, it didn't need magic to operate but became more potent depending on the magic cast upon it? Maybe? He wasn't cut out for this. "Turqueo." Again, the carpet distorted, and the advancing statue was spun, rather unceremoniously, 180 degrees. In retrospect, it was good their trip was exciting. It gave him less of an opportunity to wallow.

Ian had attempted to stun the statue and that had gone about as well as one might have expected. He couldn't believe one of them had activated it. Merlin, these kids were too stupid to live, weren't they?

Apparently not too, stupid, however: Johnson surprised Ian by summoning a rather advanced shield charm, one that even he hadn't mastered. Jenning followed up by using the carpet under the statue to manipulate it around, which gave Ian an idea.

The carpet!

Johnson was busy, apparently, looking for a weakness, but Ian ran along behind her to pose an alternate solution, in case there wasn't a weak spot, or its spell absorption still saved it.

"Come on," She muttered through clenched teeth. "Where's the damned chink?"

Ian couldn't resist.

"And you call me rude, Johnson," he said, "Just in case your plan doesn't work, I've got an idea. Be ready with that shield charm you just pulled. I want that thing to go flying all the way down the hallway."

Just then, Ian raised his wand and shouted

"Resume Incantatio," said Ian, sending a white ball of magic flying down the hallway, past the advancing statue. Though nothing seemed to happen, Ian knew the spell had hit its mark. The carpet trap from before should
be active again down the hall.

Ian wasted no time in firing another curse at the statue.

"Reducto!" Ian shouted. A golden ball struck the statue, which reeled momentarily, but seemed to absorb the blast.

"Load it up with magic!" Ian shouted.

Opal wasn't sure completely what was going on- to be honest, it had gone a little fast. All of a sudden, the statue attacked.....and then Annie was holding up a shield charm that Opal was fairly certain she couldn't do......and then.....apparently, his name was Ian, started shouting at them to "Load it up with magic!"
And that was what sprung her mind into gear.
Spells, spells.....preferably, spells that packed a lot of punch. Opal withdrew her somewhat tiny wand compared to the others, and put her mind into overdrive.
And messing it up....might make it better or worse. Opal just wouldn't stutter during spells.
She almost snorted. Like that was going to happen.
Opal spat out the first spell that she could think of. "Confringo!" Instead of making the statue burst into flames, the statue simply glowed gold as the spell hit it, and absorbed it. Seeing Annie's flame and finally realizing what Ian was trying to do, she cast another spell, this time a stunner.
Opal cast a few more random spells on the statue, which was getting faster and faster. Until she said, "E-expelliarmus!"
Well, that couldn't be good.
Immediately, her own wand dropped as a rather interesting looking gas slipped out from the tip. Tinged yellow, it clouded her face, which made seeing anything rather interesting. She coughed and tried to fan it away as best she could, then crouched down to look for her wand. After a few precious seconds, her fingers clasped the cylindrical item, and she used a quick Blowing charm to get rid of it. Casting another disarming charm at the statue- this time correctly, she turned bright red at the fact she'd done that. Talk about embarrassing, and not to mention dangerous!
Also, the mist had caused her hair to become very frizzy and rather like a furball, but she didn't know that.

Load it up with magic? That was Ian's plan? What was it going to do, explode when it hit the shield from the force of the magic?
......Grudgingly, Annie had to admit that the plan was quite brilliant.
Although it's success rested solely on other student's ability to react to his yelled at message.....and Annie. How long she could keep the shield up.
It used magic to power itself. A lot of magic. And whether that magic was from the statue or Annie herself was kind of irrelevant. While the statue hitting her shield a moment ago gave her a minor boost (and if she pulled this off, that would likely help) it was kind of draining to keep up for long periods of time. Already, Annie was starting to shake, sweat, and feel a little lightheaded.
"If someone could speed this thing up, that would be fan-flipping-tastic!" she yelled out. She wasn't sure how much longer she could keep the shield up, much less keep it up at full strength.
Finally though, ending the tail, another student finally sent the final piece of magic and the statue took off like a racing horse, speeding toward her. Annie braced herself for the blast by placing a foot behind the other and opening her teeth slightly- with this much energy, it was going to be a huge impact.
Annie had been correct in that respect- it did shift her back a couple of inches, and she felt the impact all the way into her core. The magic thrust forward by the statue was absorbed into all edges into the white smoke, evident by a golden wave. Then the leftover magic shifted back into the statue, which exploded in a spectacular, fiery inferno.
For a moment, all was still.
The shield suddenly faded out of view, almost as quickly as it had appeared out of Annie's wand, although void of the whooshing sound effect. As for the caster herself....
Annette felt very dizzy and suddenly slightly weak. She felt, but almost did not notice, the thin branch of mahogany that meant as much to her as her right arm, slip out of her fingers and fall to the ground. Then she, too, followed it's trajectory, falling forward onto her hands and knees.
She would not pass out. She would not give Professor Baker or that de Ponte du Lac the satisfaction of deciding that she was magically weak and not cut out for this.
Annie figured she was going to be ok. Though at the moment, she wasn't completely positive she could stand under her own power, and she wasn't sure she wanted to try, either.

The Gryffindor wasn't entirely sure what had happened. Someone had yelled to shoot magic and he'd shot and then something brilliant had happened- Ah! Magic! He was going to fail this class, wasn't he? And Annie was toppling over. Ray wasn't quick enough to catch her. And he'd be kicking himself in the ass for awhile for not being more diligent. If he got distracted by every shiny object-- On his knees beside her, now, "Annie..." Was it normal to sound that worried about girl you'd only really started to get to know a few days ago? Not that Ray was particularly overwrought about how he sounded. Not right then. Hand, without much conscious thought, took a supportive route across her back. Just in case she felt like she might wind up fully on the floor and needed something different to lean on. Quietly his mind went through a list of spells that might be able to help steady her a little. "You feel OK to move?" Probably better to check first, yea? With a concerned sort of look on his face, he awaited an answer. Not that he was in a hurry to have her respond. Had their positions been swapped he'd probably have been knocked cold. The reverberation from whatever she had done... he'd felt them through the stone corridor. He was sure most had. It was impressive.

Annie most certainly did not feel ok. That was probably both the most brilliant and the most idiotic idea she'd ever come up with in her life.
She felt sweat on her brow and she knew she was trembling, and trembling pretty badly. "Annie..." She heard Ray say, but she couldn't really lift her head up to look at him. That would probably get her further onto the floor. Although that hand he was placing on her back was helping. And he sounded concerned, and.....ok, was it wrong to think this was an absolutely amazing guy after only a few days? So not the time to be wondering over the effect of some boy had on her.....even if he seemed so romantic, and....... Um.....moving on.
Oxygen seemed to be so much more precious a resource than it was before. Annie sucked in what seemed like bucketfuls of air, and yet it wasn't enough. Not because of Ray, but because it was like she'd gone for a long race and felt simply spent. "Magic." She gasped out, before taking another moment to breath the precious oxygen. Her breathing slowed down slightly, and she then felt more like she had just done a rather tough yoga session rather than a mile long sprint. "The shield takes magic, a lot of magic. I'm ok, I promise." She finally felt she had the ability to look up at Ray, when her vision swam a little. But she was pretty sure she could stand with a little help. "Mind helping me up?" She held out a hand for him to grab, if he could. Hopefully she'd be able to stand on her own after that....in a few minutes.

It was relieving, to say the least, that she was OK. Though he couldn't say he'd realized using powerful magic could... drain a person physically. Geos to show how often he actually used his magic for anything strenuous, mostly he stuck to herbology. The only thing that seemed to make sense in the demented school. "Not at all, let's take 'er easy." Ray figured yanking her up by hand would really only make her dizziness worse. Fighting off images of her falling into him, he did the gallant thing and stayed by her side. Right. Readjusting into a crouch he provided a support as they worked back into a standing sort of position. And, just in case she was still feeling a little weak his arm remained, tentatively, around her. Though it had dropped closer down to her hip in a more easy going grasp. He never had been particularly worried about seeming overly familiar. If she didn't like it, she'd tell him. Ray didn't doubt that.

"Maybe better if we stay at the back?" The Gryffindor suggested, in a way not at all indicative of his house colours. "Let that lot deal with the next few." Meaning, the few students at the head of the class that seemed nothing but excited to find spells and dismantle them. Ray couldn't help but wonder how long this little field trip was supposed to last. There was only so long he could fend off the crushing sadness that seemed to emanate from the stone walls. Each looming shadow an unfortunate reminder of things long past. He wished he'd known to avoid coming today. Smiling, at Annie, he awaited her response as the rest of the group rallied and continued as they had been. A few people had asked if she was alright, Professor Hicks included. But it appeared there wasn't a lot of time to dawdle and they were urged forward.

"Woah, woah." Grateful for the arm that was now slung around her torso, she leaned into it for support as she stumbled slightly. In more ways than one....oh, shut up, Annette. She looked up at Ray with a smirk on her face. "Well, that was fun, wasn't it, Mr. Ray?" She said. She gripped his arm for more balance as the class demanded she put one foot.....in front of the other.
"I'm ok." She told everyone, as a blanket statement. She turned back to Ray alone. "Although I think you might be right. That was probably the most idiotic plan I have ever come up with. I had to do something, you know? I didn't want to just stand there."
The room was spinning. A lot. And her vision was swimming. A lot. But she promised herself she was alright. She had to be alright. She put on a brave face because she knew that the spell had taken a bit more out of her than she was letting on. She didn't regret it at all, though. At heart, she'd just wanted to help.

His grip on her tightened reflexively, when she stumbled. Only to relax once more when she gripped his arm. "It'll only get better from here." Ray promised, cheekily. As a joke, mostly. Though the hand at her hip might have suggested otherwise. Laughter was always a good remedy and he had a reputation for making terrible jokes to lighten a situation up. Terrible, because he wasn't really funny. Jokes, because, for some reason, people felt inclined to laugh. If not at what he intended, but because they appreciated the effort. Either way, it wasn't something he was sure he could stop doing even though his friends had been sure to make him aware of it. Out of all of the annoying habits one could have, this one couldn't be so terrible, yea?

Ray nodded in what could only be described as an understanding manner, "I couldn't imagine playing chicken being a productive way of dealing with enchantments." Which... it sort of looked like they'd been doing. Well, she hadn't been running. But still... "Though my money woulda been on you, if that were the case." The Gryffindor continued, shaking his head and laughing a bit. Creative praise, because if he called her brilliant too much in one day, it'd become ridiculous. Though it had been, no one else had seemed to be willing to combat the armor.

Completely Honest Hufflepuff Who You'll Mostly Find in the Kitchen

Annie rolled her eyes at the joke, but managed a chuckle and a smile for Ray's sake. "I'm sure. I mean, I just hit rock bottom, right?" She was unsure as to exactly why she felt the need to crack a sarcastic, cliche joke other than to volley off of Ray's. It was kind of stupid, anyway. Her joke. Which she was over-analyzing a bit.
"What exactly does that mean, Mr. Ray?" What exactly did that mean? Annie wasn't completely sure.

ooc|| Hello hello! Assuming this thread isn't dead, I'm going to have Addie join in. Which means, Ian, you may have to edit that post of yours. :P

Also, Beth, should we just make up whatever happened between Addie and Brock in the DADA classroom?
