Welcome to Hogwarts Interactive Role Play, one of the net's best in Harry Potter and Hogwarts role plays. We hope you enjoy your visit.

Here at Hogwarts our students are currently in their Seventh Year. Last year, the war against the Knights crescendoed into a direct attack against the school. Disappearances are still reported (or not) daily, and the Dark Lord and his Knights of Walpurgis have succeeded in spreading their message of "do as thou will" far and wide across the globe. Magical Law Enforcement, which is now the only authority in the wizarding world under Martial Law, has responded by tightening security, controlling the media, and strictly enforcing curfews and other laws. Their control is damaging to the people's freedom, and their hierarchy is a suspicious lot. It is clear that some members of the MLE like their new found power a bit too much, others see it necessary, but all are in serious danger of being consumed by it. But with the picture of just what Azariah Amaranth is after becoming ever clearer, and a third player in the form of a group called SAVIOR entering the scene, what will the MLE do next to ensure that they've got the situation under control?

The Elementium, the Higher Plane that had once been hidden just beyond the veil in the Department of Mysteries, and the Deathly Hallows. The pieces of the puzzle have been identified, but what picture do they make?

Today is Day 1 of Year Seven. Students have had time to recover from the Knight's attack, and are beginning to reluctantly return to the walls of Hogwarts. The safety of the school has been diminished, bringing up the question everyone must ask. Are you safe anywhere these days? It's up to each individual to decide their fate, where will you decide to go?

Auror | DADA Teacher | Head of MLE

Baker stood with a hand casually propped against a low steel wall, the only barrier separating him from a little over three hundred meter drop to sea-washed rocks fencing the massive prison in. Thousands of icy droplets pelleted down upon him in the subsiding hail. It was no oddity for the island to suffer far worse than the typical Scottish weather, and the man paid no mind to it as he stared motionlessly, seemingly at nothing in particular, awaiting the group of students with their escort. Azkaban wasn't generally open to public, this being the first excursion to take place at the heavily guarded tower, and rightfully so. Were it not for the withdrawal of Dementors to join Amaranth's army, along with the last escaping prisoner and the second boldest name on Brock's blacklist, Alphonse de Pointe du Lac, no guiltless student would have ever been allowed to set foot within its walls. After the breakout, Azkaban had experienced numerous upgrades to ensure history wouldn't repeat itself. Even with the shortage in MLE's resources, Baker had over the last summer personally made certain to secure the only place they could lock away captured Knights and other dark wizards without needing to worry about another stab in the back.

Aside from the lack of lifeless black creatures encircling the prison, the single most apparent alternation on its roof was the addition of a dozen of gargoyle statues atop each outer wall. The immobile winged beasts, rather than gazing angrily out to the sea, were situated with their sneering faces overlooking the triangular centre. Even despite their eerie appearance, nobody would get as close as the head of MLE was standing on any other day. There were a plentiful more surprises in the lower levels and Brock wouldn't have dreamed of revealing them all, or disclosing any details of how to overcome them, considering his firm belief in presence of Amaranth's spies in the student body. But he wasn't the type to take a class out for a friendly outing, let alone waste his time without a purpose. The Seventh Years were bound to take their exams and leave the school in a couple of months and, whether the war was over by then or not, the MLE was in a desperate demand of manpower and needed to start covering more ground than just one school and a prison. Besides, although most of his students were abysmal and completely unfit to become Aurors or Enforcers, Brock hoped to steer at least some of them to consider a ministry job. If their side won, it was only a question of time before a brand new ministry rose from the ashes of the old one.

Halle, along with Baker's DADA class, arrived in Azkaban. They were in an entirely new courtyard now, one desolate and uninviting. Allowing herself a shiver, as the cascade of rain from the waterfall fell upon them, she tucked her robes in tighter to her body. Before searching for the head of MLE. This was a bad idea. She could only hope he had enough tact not to mention what had happened earlier. "Twenty points to whoever can tell me where we are." The Professor rallied; most of the students looked a good mixture between stunned and desolate. Even without the dementor bodyguards, the walls of the prison had a way of sucking the life out of you. Or perhaps they were wondering as to what maniacal purpose their instructor could have for bringing them here.

Halcyon, of course, had an idea. While she couldn't bring herself to agree with Brock's motives, she was through arguing with them. After all, the students could only be protected for so long. Already, they were fighting back against those older and more powerful. Seeking to find a place of their own. The woman's thoughts lingered, now, on the previous battles that had been staged at Hogwarts and it was with great diligence that she swept them away. While the sad air surrounding such thoughts remained, she had other things to focus on. No, it wasn't right to coddle them. Nor did she have any right to. This place frightened her. It seemed the list of reasons as to why she should not have come was growing.

Looking at exactly WHERE the portkey had dropped them, Opal shivered. She knew this place. Unfortunately. At first, she'd thought it had been a haunting, but beautiful, piece of architecture. Until whatever pureblood she'd been telling this to at the time looked at her like she was demented and told her exactly what the building was used for. Now she felt more than a little sick. What the heck were they doing here?
She raised her hand. "P-professor Hicks? W-we're j-just outside Azkaban......I-I think." Professor Hicks could probably barely hear her, but since she was directly in front she didn't need to speak to loudly. Hopefully it carried.
A hand flew to the back of her neck, out of habit checking anything that she'd fallen on for injury after the portkey. She sucked at landings. Luckily, other then a scratch that looked like it might need a band-aid later, but not much else, on her knee, she felt fine. Creep-ed out, and her tummy was turning a little, but honestly it was better than she usually felt after a portkey.
She quickly drew out her sketchbook out of her boot and used her wand to size it back to normal size. She then grabbed a muggle colored pencil (as quills really kind of sucked for this sort of thing) out of said boot and started drawing the lines, using her right arm as the table. If she was going to be at the place where dreams got sucked out of you, the least she could do was send a few pictures to Eirin and Henry.

Thank goodness she managed to grab the portkey at the last moment!
But now Annie had fallen over, and her head wouldn't stop spinning, and really, she wondered if she should be feeling sicker than all the other students combined was cause for concern. Maybe she should go see the nurse......
But there were so many cool things to see here that her eyes just widened.....and widened.....then her brain kicked in and she realized exactly where they were just as a blond Gryff, probably only slightly older than she was said something. Then she grew a bit pale.
Not much, though. Having birthed many horses over the years when the vet lived an hour away, she could very well be described as having a "strong stomach". She'd seen some things on the farm with the animals, even treated them, that most people would throw up over. So she wasn't really that bad. Unless it had to do with portkeys. Or apparating, first time she tried it. And the floo. Actually, all modes of wizarding transportation, although she'd gotten the hang of apparating, made her somewhat sick.
It was just the implications. People had died here. People had been unhappy here. And Annie didn't really like to see anyone else unhappy. This place......was cruel . She just felt the need to help everyone in here, even though they were all criminals. Or bring them all cupcakes.
'Focus, Annette,' she thought to herself. Not everyone was fluffy bunnies like herself, and she'd learned the hard way that everyone else but her wanted to be sneaky and cruel. She seemed to be one of the few on the strait and narrow. Besides, if they had done things to hurt other people, they should get punished.
But it was obvious by the look on Annie's face that she thought that the M.L.E should find other options.

Baker seemed largely unimpressed as his class, some more gracefully than others, rained from the sky, and it was only the all too familiar voice plunging surely through the harsh wind that at last caught his attention. The notion of her snatching one of his intended questions came secondary to the reality of who was asking it. After making sure no students managed to miss the massive platform, not a hint of his surprise leaked through his rigid composure as he stepped in, brushing off the eager answerer with a slight jeer, so typical for the Head of MLE. "Well, you are standing on it, S-S-Sherlock." Perhaps his tone was a little more cutting than usual but Baker couldn't bring himself to care. "Fifteen from Gryffindor," he added as an afterthought, rapidly approaching the Transfiguration teacher. Nobody was getting easy points in his lessons, let alone ridiculous amounts of them for a simple query, and whether Scare chose to break that unspoken rule to provoke him or to gain his notice, she was succeeding.

House points, however, were the least pressing reason behind his irritation. "What are you doing here, Hicks?" he opened straightforwardly. Having clearly requested for the dumbass Divination loony to arrive in her stead, he was under firm impression Scare had no business of being anywhere but in the Hospital Wing. Not only to recuperate after the beating taken from a rouge bludger, but Brock wasn't quite sure how to deal with the woman after what had taken place between them. It was really the safest approach to show off indifference whenever encountering something out of his league, and the Auror would have preferred to be given some time for the turmoil to settle rather than needlessly lashing out on people. Despite maintaining the air of authority, Baker had momentarily strayed from his intention to keep an eye on the bunch of teenagers lest they try anything stupid.

(OOC: I wouldn't advise anyone to approach the gargoyle statues, unless you'd like your character to get attacked by one... ^^)

The Professor felt her jaw set at the sound of the MLE's voice. She had been expecting the man to interject, of course. But part of her had been hoping he'd stay some reasonable distance away. The woman's eyes flashed dangerously as he questioned her being here. "I believe I'm capable enough to dictate whether or not I'm apt." Halcyon returned, doing an exemplary job of keeping her tone professional. Especially considering how much she, rather irrationally, wanted to whack him on the head so hard it rolled off his shoulders. Decisively speaking, he shouldn't question her right now. And if this wasn't apparent, she would have to make it so. "Your fill in had a prior engagement." Her eyes swept over the students crowded in the courtyard, "Miss Martin, put that sketchpad away. This will be viewed in the same manner as a lecture, you are expected to pay attention." Her tone was less obviously hostile while addressing a student, but with the same no nonsense tinge she'd been executing since having left the ward.

Lee allowed her gaze to fall on the man definitively, for the first time since they'd all appeared at the top of the prison. In a theatrical gesture, her left arm swept towards the student body, she encouraged him to get on with the bloody lesson. Only to notice a Gryffindor boy staggering about the courtyard, his hand went out for support on one of the gargoyle statues. The woman was quick to react, as her wand was already in her hand. The boy, Ray Jenning, loosed a startled sort of cry as the gargoyle came to life and attacked him. A jet of blue erupted from her wand and the gargoyle was stunned enough in its endeavor that the boy had enough time to escape uninjured. Her spell, which had been intended to effectively dismantle the gargoyle, was otherwise ineffective...

ooc/figured there'd be some special way to stop them, and that they'd be impervious to most magic

Azkaban. Ray felt his knees go weak at the prospect. He had been expecting something unpleasant. But not of this nature. He'd been attacked last year by one of the Knights, tortured... The Gryffindor staggered, already woozy from the sudden apparition and grabbed the nearest thing for support. The gargoyle, which had at first appeared as sturdy and unresponsive as the stone he was standing on, sprang to life. A strangled cry escaped him as a stone arm of the previously statuesque figure lunged for his neck. Ray stumbled in his shock, might have completely fallen backward in his attempts at escape had a Hufflepuff not been standing right behind him. He backed right into the man as a streak of blue stilled the gargoyle from doing any serious damage. Ray found himself frozen to the spot now, unable to move as he stared into the unblinking eyes of his assailant. "Watch out!"

The Hufflepuff, one he vaguely recognized as Alistair York, was quicker on his feet than he. Ray was pulled, rather unceremoniously, to one side. The Gryffindor scrambled as far away from the gargoyle as plausible before remembering he had a wand of his own and pulled it out... No immediate spells came to mind as the gargoyle shook itself from the bonds of his Professor's spell and hurtled towards him.

Annie didn't like Professor Brock in the best of situations. He knew what he was talking about, but that wasn't the only requirement of being a good professor. He stunk with kids, and people in general, for that matter, and he was also just plain rude. Which was probably why she didn't like him. She was good at DADA, but she honestly didn't respect him at all.
Right now, though, she really didn't like him. So she gave him about the same amount of tact she gave everyone else, as per usual. "Hey! That was rude! All.....I'm sorry, what's your name?" The question was directed at the blonde haired Gryffindor who had originally answered the question.
The girl looked rather bewildered. 'Erm.....Opal,'
"Right. All Opal did was answer a question- correctly, I might add. If you're not giving her at least a few points, at least don't take them away. She did nothing wrong!"
She never really respected Professor Baker, not as a person. She had to say something, regardless of punishment. It wasn't like her housemates, other than Alistair, liked her that much anyway, and detention wasn't that big a deal.
"Ray!" The words slipped out of her mouth before she even realized what she was doing. Her heart started to pound and she felt like she was slipping off the top of the building. Without even thinking, she grabbed her wand, ran over and grabbed Ray's hand. "Come on!" she cried. "Will someone who knows how to stop this thing please help!?" She always paid attention in DADA, but she was better at recognizing effects of something than actually fighting it off. Not to mention the fact she wasn't completely certain if they'd learned that spell yet.

Opal looked down, a couple of tears in her eyes. Really, all she did was answer a question, correctly. Why'd he take all those points away? It wasn't like she ever earned them back in his class. Now her housemates were going to hate her! Well....even more than some of them already did.
Her mouth dropped open at a dark haired Hufflepuff standing up for her to Baker. Didn't she realize she was screwed? Baker was going to squash her like a bug.
Though she'd seen this girl around before, and Opal had the feeling the Hufflepuff didn't give a grain of pixie dust.
"Erm...Opal," She told her. What else was there to say? If she'd already started, it wasn't like she was going to listen to reason. "Thank y-you," she muttered inaudibly.
Opal was a little annoyed. It wasn't like she couldn't do two things at once. Besides, if you looked at her notes for any lecture you'd see sketched diagrams everywhere over her notes. That was just how she learned. Of course, she respected Professor Hicks much too much to disobey an order like that. She simply tapped her sketch pad with her wand and placed it back in her boot after it was shrunk.
Her eyes widened. The guy from the snowball fight. She had to do something. Not much to do. But she quickly ran after the dark haired Hufflepuff that had just stood up for her, and assisted in trying to pull Ray from certain death with insistent tugs. "I-I don't know h-how to stop i-it!" She told both Ray and the Hufflepuff that was obviously very concerned for his safety.

In a mood to shove prior engagements up the guy's rear, Brock instead scribbled a mental note of having a critical word with the moron for letting a woman with a brace take his place. The Auror paid no mind to the incensed Hufflepuff, as if her words phased straight through him with no impact whatsoever. His cold stare never left the professor as he towered over her, an intimidating stance most of his recruits countered with a retreat. Scare's scolding of the student left him impassive as, although her ownership of an actual spine was by no means condemnable, he couldn't care less if the girl paid attention or not. And as it were, the whole class would be searched for any confidential material afterwards, the girl's sketchbook included. "If you think--" Baker begun coolly, intent on making her change her mind, when a sudden yell from behind cut him off.

A wand was ready in his outstretched hand even before Brock fully turned around, noting as the statue's assault was hindered by Scare's spell. In such situations, he'd learned to expect the worst and was somewhat relieved it was just one of the Azkaban's guardians springing to life, not a dozen of Knights about to take them on. A flick of his wand later, a crystal wall erected before the group of students, shielding them from the beast's subsequent attacks. Rolling his eyes at the excessive drama from the youngsters, even as the gargoyle flew backwards only to lunge with a more potent strike, he casually made his way to the side. Despite beginning to crack in the middle, Brock knew the barrier was strong enough to hold the aggressor back a while longer. Staying clear of it, the man let out a sharp whistle to gain its attention, as this approach was deemed easier than pushing or firing spells through the row of students. The gargoyle paused its attacks immediately, switching focus on the one unprotected target with a screeching charge, but the unfazed man merely lifted his arm with a soundless chant on his lips. Just as a gruesome collision appeared unavoidable, the creature's wings fluttered violently as it made a sudden halt. Seeming largely confused, the winged statue measured the spectators indifferently before returning to its pedestal where it grew motionless once more. "If you refrain from fondling everything, you may just make it back alive," he stated evenly, but there was carefully hidden amusement behind his voice, since he was consciously exaggerating the dangers, at least for the duration of this excursion. It would serve the students well to be wary and not take the tower lightly, because he had personally made certain nobody could ever escape it again. At least not in one piece. "And maybe you should learn to count, princess," he addressed the Hufflepuff girl who had so rashly attempted to interrupt him earlier, not feeling the need to clarify that her stuttering schoolmate had, in fact, earned her house five points.

Briskly, the man moved back to the front of the class' current composition, standing just behind the Ravenclaw Head with his sight on everyone present, as it should have been. It was really Scare's fault, having distracted him from his original intention to actually warn the students about the statues. But since he didn't wish to admit to being distracted, Baker chose to presently overlook her contribution. "Now, I believe your Professor would prefer to enlighten you on some historical drivel before we move on to lower levels," the Auror announced, sending his colleague a look that clearly stated he'd merely delay their argument for the sake of the lecture. As their means of return was located on the ground floor, he'd had no way of sending her back either way.

Halcyon could not say she had ever been worried for the students' safety. Too much trust in the head of MLE, despite how much she'd like to see him castrated. Her gaze, unflinching despite the coldness in his own, might have suggested as much. At least, in the moment. She knew he'd been about to tell her off and she was entirely uncertain whether or not she would have been able to stop herself from telling him to piss off. Which would utterly shatter the one thing that was keeping her sane right now. A shield was erected around the students and she didn't bother firing another spell at the gargoyle. Obviously, she didn't know how to dismantle it. If anything, she was glad for the distraction. It took some of the heat off her decision to come here. Because she had already had one too many public yelling matches with the man. The Professor tucked her wand into her sleeve as the situation was dealt with and surveyed wearily as normality was regained. Normality. If thinly veiled threats towards students could ever be considered as such. It took a special sort of jack ass to find amusement in tormenting student who had just been attacked by a booby trap set in place to kill potentially escaped convicts. Obviously, the tower wasn't as lethal as he was claiming. (At least, not where they'd be going with the students.) That would be a lot more work than it was worth, she figured.

Great, they were moving on. About bloody time. Whatever they needed to discuss could wait. "Azkaban," The Professor started, largely ignoring the auror's look and the fact that it hadn't been her idea to preach about the prisons's history, after the students had deemed themselves unharmed and mostly alright, "Was founded in the 1600's." The exact date was unknown, as a criminal punishing system had existed long before. At some point, their way of holding prisoner's had evolved into this great fortress, "It is the only official wizarding prison to date." Other prisons, such as Nurmengard, could hardly be considered of the same caliber. Nurmengard, after all, had been created to hold only one. Azkaban was unprecedented, terrible... A wizard once sentenced, would live out the remainder of their life in the desolate halls. Perhaps death was even preferable. At least while the dementors still served as the prison guards... "Over the years it has housed countless dark witches and wizards..." Again, she pulled her robe in around herself. It was chilly outside, they were located somewhere unplottable in the North Sea and water surged around the triangular fortress... "Until recently a break out from this prison was almost entirely unheard of." Since last year, obviously, they'd amped their defences up a bit. Professor Hicks looked at the current Head of MLE, wondering if she'd forgotten anything important. Or, perhaps, hoping he'd lead them out of the cold water spraying down upon them. Because, right now, inside seemed a bit of a step up from where they were.

ooc/Can we just pretend like she said most of the point I make in the second paragraph. No personal opinions, just facts. I didn't want to write out a huge dialogue.

Having never travelled by portkey before, Beth was entirely unprepared for the sudden jolt her body suffered, and therefore somewhat justified for latching onto Alistair's shamelessly well-defined arm for the duration of their journey. It was a strange rush that coursed through they as their feet reacquainted with the ground, but not unpleasantly so. Her hand remained in place a while longer, before she realized its presence and retreated it hastily. For some reason, the Hufflepuff was somewhat more conscious about any physical contact with the fellow prefect since their backfiring prank. The question as to their location was answered even before the girl found her bearing again and shook her head at Baker's cold reply to the girl. The tension humidifying the chilly air certainly couldn't be just in her imagination, and her sight briefly consulted Ali for confirmation. Whatever went down between Hack, it would surely make the whole trip all the more interesting. Rather than soaking up the thrilling atmosphere of her surroundings, Beth dared not to speak in expectations of another shouting match between her two teachers, even as they ignored her housemate's protective outburst. Although Baker seemed nastier than usually, Beth knew better than to interfere, and it was too late to warn Annie not to do so either.

The argument was interrupted, though, by a startled cry and she gasped at the unfolding scene in front of her. As if in sync with Alistair's prompt reaction to pull Ray out of danger, Beth had her wand ready to fire a stunner at the animated statue. Glancing off its sneering face, the spell had no effect whatsoever and all the girl could do was get ready to tackle the beast were it to lunge for her friends. It passed her how silly that plan was, and fortunately she didn't get to enact it as a protective barrier assembled before them. It was unfair how easy Brock made the whole business of taming an angry gargoyle seem, even though she almost expected him to lose that fight at one point. Erecting from her ready-to-pounce posture, Beth blinked and glanced over to her companions to ensure none of them were injured. The man's point of not touching anything came across rather well and she made a resolution to pay more attention to the environment. "Don't worry about it," she addressed Annette after Baker's comment at her expense, hoping to help her calm down a little in order not to get herself in trouble. Most students knew by now not to take any amusement in Baker's taunting, the others were mainly Slytherins, but even they were subjected to his ridicule from time to time.

Beth grew quiet while her Transfiguration Professor commenced the lecture, trying to memorize as much information as she could. "What do you reckon happened to her?" the Hufflepuff muttered to Alistair when she got the opportunity, referencing Halle's injured hand and the palpable snark in her voice. She hadn't seen the professor be so tense ever before, except perhaps for the previous fight she'd witnessed. The woman, and most would laugh at hearing such a notion a year ago, could seem almost as intimidating as Baker at times. The duo wasn't seen at breakfast earlier and only speculations could help them unfold what was happening between them. It escaped the girl's notice how unaffected she was by the unexpected Azkaban ordeal. There was no fear, just curiosity about the place. It did affect her in a sense, but oddly in no way that was troublesome to her.

Distracted from escaping, by a familiar voice calling his name, it was probably exceedingly lucky that a barrier sprang from the Earth surrounding them. He flinched as the gargoyle came smashing down upon the crystallized barrier. And his gaze, which had gone, rather astoundedly to the girl who had taken his hand, was stolen by the immediate threat to their lives. One that Baker disposed of before he had a chance to voice his concerns, or even begin to think of how to stop it. His grip on her hand tightened, there wasn't anywhere they could go. It wasn't until the threat was diminished did the guilt seep in a little. No one had been hurt, but in a moment of weakness he'd put people in danger. How stupid could a person get? "Thanks..." The Gryffindor managed, sounding rather hoarse, in the aftermath. The appreciation was really directed at everyone who had suddenly stepped in and tugged him out of danger. Though Alistair was the main one he was trying to get the attention of. "Anyone would have done the same."

He was still feeling a little messed up over the whole thing, but he realized there was probably no way he'd be getting a pass out of this class. Probably there wasn't any easy way to leave. So his gaze went to Annie. He was still holding her hand tightly. The Gryffindor loosened his grip, in case she felt the need to pull away from him now that their lives weren't threatened. "Sorry, I'm not sure I want to let go." Because if anyone could distract him from everything that was bothering him right now it was this girl. Distractedly, he tried to pay attention to Professor Hick's lecture.

Alistair was used to apparating. He and his mother had done quite a lot of moving around back in the day. Never quite with this method. She'd done this thing where the entire room was pulled into nothingness and materialized somewhere else. The sucking sensation wasn't one someone really got used to, but he was in far better shape than most who had been teleported. In fact, he had a creeping suspicion of where they were, but was a little too preoccupied with the hand around his arm to really speak up and earn his house any points. And when she pulled away he was of half a mind to take her hand back. In fact, he'd been in the process of doing so when Ray had bumped into him. Warning words escaped almost instantaneously, but he was already pulling them both out of the initial strike, Ray by the collar of his robe, of the stone beast. Everyone else seemed to rally around them moments later. He had stepped in, in front of the Gryffindor at some point. The humour of the situation struck him somewhere along the time the shield popped up around them and he loosed a chuckle. This could not bode well. Barely five minutes in and everyone had been put in danger. Though that might have been partially because Beth looked like she'd been planning on jumping on the thing, rodeo style. Baker had the things attention now and it was only a matter of time. Shrugging off the Gryffindor's gratitude the Hufflepuff rolled his shoulders and tucked his wand away. "Looks like were in for a bit of excitement, eh?" To no one in particular. Though the words had really been intended to calm those around, it wouldn't be good for anyone to lost their cool, or cause trouble. It would be wise to heed the MLE's warning. Even had he embellished.

"It's not just her." Ali returned, thinking, beyond a doubt, that were Baker operating at full capacity the gargoyle incident would not have happened. Man, but the wedge between them was so incredibly palpable he wondered how it had slipped his notice at all. Though Professor Hicks was the most changed. Brock was known for being nasty, unapproachable... But Halle? The reason they were so interesting was because of how entirely different they were. They never seemed to stay mad at each other for long. The conflict in the Great Hall had been resolved almost instantaneously. "Must be serious, though," Last time it had been revolved around students, the war... The Hufflepuff might have suggested asking the woman, about her injury, had the Professor not been giving him the impression that she might morph into a harpy and snap all their heads off. "Not concocting any wicked matchmaker pranks, are you?" This was breathed quieter than the rest. Out of fear of being discovered, mostly. Though he'd managed to move in a smidgeon closer, so she could still hear him. The man wasn't worried Hack's fate hung in the balance, most likely they just hadn't had a chance to, uh, blow off steam. The thought of articulating that thought was a little too tempting and he knew he'd probably burst out laughing. Which, on the top of the great wizarding prison, in the middle of a lecture, was probably a bad idea. Mentioning what had happened between them though? That had been a great idea. Yikes, dude. Mostly, it was the thought of thinking of a way for them to reconcile in Azkaban that intrigued him. Because this trip obviously needed more excitement. Not that he could think of any way for them to interfere discreetly.

Completely Honest Hufflepuff Who You'll Mostly Find in the Kitchen

Annie muttered something that wasn't all that audible, but sounded suspiciously like a curse word to those in a foot radius from her. "Still rude," she muttered, but she'd been in Baker's class long enough to know by now that the only way he ever really let her tell him off is if they were alone- he would take action if there wasn't any respect. And she respected him- as a 'good' guy (notice the quotes) and as a professor. Not a friend. He was like that idiot guy at work. Well, she supposed he was the idiot guy at work to some people- though he knew what he was doing.
She laughed. "Beth, don't worry about it. By now I think I know where we stand, and I have no pretenses." Oh please, as freaking if he liked her. But she wasn't just going to come out and say that- you never knew who could overhear.....then again, in the hands of a Legillimens thoughts weren't really all that safe anyway....erm, time to stop thinking.
Annie smiled at Ray. God, he was cute! Since that night in the kitchen she'd been having fantasies of them having dinner and a movie......
Oh, she was crushing bad. After only meeting him once! This was crazy!
She wasn't even sure if he liked her back. But she liked to consider herself a sort of friend of his, and her friend was obviously hurting. "It's ok. I'll keep holding on if you want me to." She squeezed tightly on his hand for a moment, in order to make her point.
She looked over at Professors Hicks and Baker. Though she knew that Beth and Ali were two students in the school who were quite interested in their relationship, Annie had no interest in it. She liked Professor Hicks, but didn't talk to her a lot outside of school hours. And she didn't care for Baker at all. But she gave a nod of support. She was sort of Alistair's girl guide, after all, and Beth was a nice girl in her house.
She smiled over at Opal. "Don't mention it. I'll always stick up for someone. Opal, you said, right? I'm Annette. You can call me Annette, or Annie, Netta.....as long as you don't call me the Loch Ness Monster, I'm a-ok," Thinking about it, Annie realized she hadn't seen the girl around much before.....though she was always ready to make a new friend.

Ray returned her smile, though it was far from his usual calibre. He was upset and unsettled. It probably wasn't overly apparent to anyone who didn't know him well. Though walking straight into a booby trip would have tipped most people off. Generally speaking, the guy was pretty good at dealing with inner turmoil. And, the way Annie squeezed his hand seemed to help. His smile turned more cheeky, like he had an ulterior motive for wanting to hold her hand. Which, let's be honest, he sort of did. It wasn't very often such a rare opportunity got sprung upon someone. Why not take advantage? It was perhaps his distraction that had made him forget almost entirely that Opal had also stepped in for him. And then only because Annette addressed her first. "What's wrong with the Loch Ness Monster?" Ray teased, allowing a small laugh before directly addressing his fellow house mate. They hadn't know each other for very long, but she was nice enough. If timid... "Hey, uh, Opal?" The Gryffindor asked, in a friendly manner, "Mind if I have my sleeve back?"

Opal smiled. "Y-yes, Opal Martin. N-nine to m-meet you." And....cue the wincing. "B-but really, thank you. P-people d-don't tend to s-stand up t-to Baker that much, a-and h-he hasn't r-really liked me since I-I met him a-all that m-much....at l-least, that's w-what I'm guessing." Opal wasn't Baker's favorite student, that was for sure, at least from what she'd observed. She wasn't sure if he was necessarily all that appreciative of that snowball thing either.....for that matter, she had to talk to Professor Hicks about Eirin. She hoped something could be done. Their parents were just so......so.......Opal honestly couldn't think of an adjective.
She smiled and flushed in embarrassment, letting go of Ray's sleeve. She'd honestly forgotten to let go. Though she mouthed to Annie- pretty name- 'we're just friends....acquaintances, really,'
She definitely wasn't going to get in the middle of this. She wasn't sure if Ali or that other hufflepuff.....Beth, was it?......had noticed, but those two had that look in their eyes. And for goodness sakes if Opal, the world's most socially awkward human had noticed, then someone else had to.

Auror | DADA Teacher | Head of MLE

Baker didn't bother berating the students for their occasional chatter, if only for the unfulfilling satisfaction of Scare's incompetence to keep them quiet. He had expected some problems, what with the inability to kick anyone out of the current classroom, but neither was he disconcerted by the students' lack of attention. He wasn't and didn't feel responsible for their grades. There was not a word of acknowledgement to his colleague as she finished her part of the lecture, choosing to ignore as much as possible. "As you may have noticed, most of the protective measures along the course of this tour have either been disabled or restricted. They can still maim you pretty good, so I expect everyone to work your gobs whenever you see one," he announced, a curt nod towards the opposite wall for the students to follow him. Even as he was facing away, Baker continued, "there are a couple of wards I've covered in class. Failing to notice those means additional homework for everyone." That was just one of his methods of prompting students' awareness, because nobody wanted to get additional load to what they were already required to do in their free time. Of course, it would mean more grading for him as well, but that was a price he had to pay. The one little detail he didn't reveal was that most of the wards they knew were arranged only for the sake of this lecture, as well as occasionally highlighted in some way that even an idiot should spot them. In Baker's mind; which meant most students probably wouldn't. Not unless they used their brains to come up with a more reliable method of finding them.

The group reached a temporary platform adjacent to the inner part of the prison, serving as an elevator to take them into selected levels. The Auror waited for everyone to follow him onto the rickety, while in fact strengthened by a couple of charms, wooden block before letting it descend several storeys. In the meantime, he explained the basic layout of the tower, informing they were about to enter a section destined for smugglers of restricted magical items. Even as they were about to walk through one of the major halls, Baker left the Transfiguration Professor with instructions to lead the students in while keeping an eye on any stragglers. In the centre of the hall lay a vast ornamented carped, assigned to literally swallow anybody reaching its midst.

She nodded, reminding herself to be somewhat observant throughout the trip. Professor Brock....well, Annie had a strong suspicion that he didn't like children. He treated them like his Auror candidates....and not all of them were future Aurors.
Annie's eyes widened and she planted her feet, holding her arm out to stop Opal and the others from moving around her, and firmly tugging on Ray's arm. "Erm....guys, correct me if I'm wrong, but that's no ordinary carpet."
She searched the mental banks for the counter spell, and found....nothing. Dang it. "Anyone remember a spell? All I can remember is how to pin it down and transfigure my hair tie into a really strong rope."

Ian groaned.

"Johnson, use your head," said Ian, "Why bother with the carpet at all? It stands to reason that enchanting a carpet meant that the enchantors expected an intruder or escapee to walk on the carpet, especially since escapees wouldn't have wands. If, however, you are in possession of a wand, then simply float yourself over it. Keep it simple, simpleton."

Ian did not like this situation at all. There was no way this was a simple field trip. Nothing like a trip to Azkaban had ever been arranged at Hogwarts before, at least, not to Ian's knowledge. Baker was up to something. Ian was going to keep his classmates safe, even if he had to resort to the same cruel educational tactics as their teacher. Ian was going to report this to the Headmistress when he got back.

Thanks Beth!

I heard the sound of a thunder, it roared out a warnin'
I heard the roar of a wave that could drown the whole world
I heard one hundred drummers whose hands were a-blazin'
I heard ten thousand whisperin' and nobody listenin'
I heard one person starve, I heard many people laughin'
Heard the song of a poet who died in the gutter
Heard the sound of a clown who cried in the alley
And it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard
And it's a hard rain's a-gonna fall.
