| Welcome to Hogwarts Interactive Role Play, one of the net's best in Harry Potter and Hogwarts role plays. We hope you enjoy your visit. Here at Hogwarts our students are currently in their Seventh Year. Last year, the war against the Knights crescendoed into a direct attack against the school. Disappearances are still reported (or not) daily, and the Dark Lord and his Knights of Walpurgis have succeeded in spreading their message of "do as thou will" far and wide across the globe. Magical Law Enforcement, which is now the only authority in the wizarding world under Martial Law, has responded by tightening security, controlling the media, and strictly enforcing curfews and other laws. Their control is damaging to the people's freedom, and their hierarchy is a suspicious lot. It is clear that some members of the MLE like their new found power a bit too much, others see it necessary, but all are in serious danger of being consumed by it. But with the picture of just what Azariah Amaranth is after becoming ever clearer, and a third player in the form of a group called SAVIOR entering the scene, what will the MLE do next to ensure that they've got the situation under control? The Elementium, the Higher Plane that had once been hidden just beyond the veil in the Department of Mysteries, and the Deathly Hallows. The pieces of the puzzle have been identified, but what picture do they make? Today is Day 1 of Year Seven. Students have had time to recover from the Knight's attack, and are beginning to reluctantly return to the walls of Hogwarts. The safety of the school has been diminished, bringing up the question everyone must ask. Are you safe anywhere these days? It's up to each individual to decide their fate, where will you decide to go? You're currently viewing our forum as a guest. General Information: Full name: Aarya al-Sulayman Nickname(s): Ary Pronunciation: AHR-yuh AHL-Sulai-ma-n; AHR-ee Gender: Baccha Posh Sex: Female Birthdate: April 12, 1995 Age: 17 Year: First Year Blood: Muggle-born Wand: None (eventually one made from bramble with a bronze snake scale from a Saraph, the poisonous serpent associated with the Moses story) Preferred House: Slytherin Appearance: Height: 5'6" Eyes: Brown Hair: Brown Physical Description: Aarya is an oddity among the students at Hogwarts. Her skin tone is darker than the rest of her peers, with pronounced cheekbones and wide mouth distinctive of her Pakistani descent. Her sharp features are softened by the rounded cheeks and slightly narrower eyes characteristic of Uzbeks. Ary's boyishly short hair cut makes the curls in her hair readily apparent, but she insists on wearing slacks instead of a skirt whenever possible. Of course, little can be done about the uniform given to her, although it is patently obvious she is unaccustomed to the nuances of wearing such clothing. It is also noteworthy that Ary is quite thin, and has only started showing the signs of puberty in the last year. History: There are a large number of magical societies and traditions beyond the shores of England and outside the Euro-zone. Some of these traditions are accommodated or accepted in to everyday life, such as in the Far East. Other traditions, like those in the Middle East operate in secret lest they risk sparking a violent reaction from the local populace. Ary hails from the ancient and secretive sihr tradition, established by the sorcerers and magicians of King Solomon in the Middle East. In the same manner as their founder, King Solomon, practitioners of sihr learn to command spirits (either Human, Djinn, or Angel) to act on their behalf and perform the miracles of magic. Proper followers of this tradition perform these same feats of magic as other traditions, although their explanation for the phenomenon differs. The sihr practitioners however are especially well-known for their open practice and explanations of magic to Muggle and Magicians. It was hoped that with this open dialogue that the wonders and joy of magic could be shared and unite the divided Humans, Djinni, and Angels. However, a few magicians abused their powers, spreading doubt so that eventually many could not believe the doctrine of unity espoused by the magicians. Eventually the growing fear led to a violent outburst and the sihr tradition was forced in to hiding or face execution by the Muggle populace. This persecution by the Muggles persists millennia later, to this day, and remains a popular tale for those who seek to unite or separate the magic world from the muggle world. Following the annihilation of the sihr tradition, magicians of the tradition lacked a common authority or central base and many disappeared in to the countryside. The sihr tradition eventually reformed, but a great many magician bloodlines had vanished in to the sea of muggles by that time. Many of these bloodlines continued to be carried by squib successors however, and magicians periodically surface. Due to this history, the region is particularly known to give birth to Muggle-borns. Tragically, the majority of these Muggle-borns are lynched as saahir or sahhaar by the local populace. A number do manage to remain hidden and are inducted in to the sihr tradition by an errant magician. Aarya al-Sulayman's story is but a common one from this region of the world. In a rural village in western Pakistan, it was said there lived a Sahhaar, an evil sorceress who would descend from her mountain castle and feed on the blood of the livestock. One morning, the villagers would awake to discover a sheep or goat that had been flayed and drained of blood. Naturally, the angered villagers tried to defend their households against the witch but were repulsed. Powerless before her, the villagers found small comfort knowing she could be appeased with the periodic sacrifice of sheep or goat. However, the witch grew bolder and greedier, coming more frequently and flaying more sheep and goats from the village. When there were only a scant few animals left, she began flaying and draining blood from the villagers themselves. Terrified, many villagers fled. But others who did not want to leave their home sent for aid from the city of Islamabad. Four Shaikh, holy men, responded to the call for help and came to judge and bring the sahhaar to justice. Together with the villagers, the shaikh slew the sahhaar. Unfortunately, its familiar, a powerful djinn the shaikh named Al-Shayatin, escaped by leaping off the mountain. The djinn's body was never recovered, but it never returned to the village. The villagers were simply glad the sorceress plaguing their lands was dead. In the end, a funeral was held for the eight men who died ensuring the safety and future of the village. Amongst them was the recently-made father, Maheeem al-Sulayman. Aarya was the only-child of Fatima al-Sulayman and Maheem al-Sulayman, barely a week old when the sahhaar and her father were slain. Fatima, already combating postpartum depression, was devastated by the loss of her husband. It was only thanks to Fatima's neighbor and friend that Ary managed to survive the early neglect of her mother. After a much-needed wake-up call, Fatima was reminded of her surviving daughter and worked hard to raise her. But things are not so easy for a young woman and widow in Pakistan. She could not legally own property, and so worked on other people's land for money. She earned money as a farm hand, helping to plant, cultivate, and harvest poppy flowers. To be honest, Fatima was in a position where she could be easily exploited, but she remained strong and opposed those who would take advantage of her. Her actions provoked a large amount of controversy and were quickly covered up to save the honor of those involved. However, her unrepentant attitude and unabashed honesty meant Fatima did not let any transgression against her slide. Men could not forgive her for her vocal accusations against them, and women detested her for seducing their husbands. In time, the villagers came to consider her a witch, and Ary as the witch's daughter. Ary and her mother were not completely detested by the village of course, they still retained a few friends who would offer them work and helped defend them from the village. Because of their influence, while Ary was the subject of bullying and slander, the situation never escalated further. However this tremulous peace was shattered by the sudden resumption of those dreadful flayings, 10 years after the sahhaar's death. Police from the nearby town were sent to investigate, and while the villagers were extremely vocal against Fatima, there was not enough evidence to prove her guilt. The police remained in the village to monitor the situation and to calm the populace so as to prevent a lynching. The villagers' anxieties were briefly quelled by the police presence, but when sheep or goats continued to be flayed and drained of blood and the police continued to have no suspects, the villagers once again became agitated. Eventually, a villager once again traveled to the city and petitioned for a saikh to come and help. Meanwhile, a 10 year-old Ary grew more apprehensive as the villager's attitudes became increasingly hostile towards her mother. It got so bad that she had nightmares and begged her mom to take her friends and flee from the village. Ary said that if they didn't, a monster would devour them. How she begged and cried until she finally fell asleep in her mother's arms, but those fears disappeared with the morning sun and the arrival of the saikh. The saikh made a brief examination over Fatima and her daughter before pronouncing them innocent. The villagers were upset and unbelieving, but had no choice but to accept the holy man's words. The saikh did however admit that the flaying of the sheep was the work of the same djinn that was at the village before. The saikh's explanation however misunderstood the fears of the villagers and vilage people quickly became convinced that the familiar had only returned because the sahhaar, the witch, was still alive. Needless to say, a mob quickly formed outside the house of Fatima and Aarya al-Sulayman. The saikh and police realizing that the situation was quickly spiraling out of control, immediately moved to secure the two. To simultaneously cow and disperse the mob, the police and the saikh marched together brandishing their weapons to knock down the door of the al-Sulayman household. The police then declared that Fatima was being taken in to custody for blasphemy, a pretext they could use to protect the woman from the lynching of the mob. The saikh declared that he had made a mistake and would need to interrogate the two more closely to understand the two. With the two safely stowed in the automobile and bound for the city, the saikh and the police carefully explained the ruse. Of course, the two were innocent of blasphemy, but the villagers could never be convinced of that. Especially since the saikh recognized the talent for magic in Ary. If she accidentally demonstrated some of her prowess in front of the villagers after these recent events, the consequences would have undoubtedly been violent. Ary therefore received some basic training in the magic arts, displaying a talent for divining the weather and communicating with animals. Following the events of Walpurgis however, the practitioners of sihr have been cautious of their presence too being exposed to the muggle world. The locals already believed in magic, but the magicians feared the popular reaction should the locals discover the existence of an organized body of magicians who had infiltrated law and religious organizations to save sorcerers from mob lynching. Because of this fear, the sihr took the precaution to close their school. However, because Ary and her family had a history with blasphemy, it was deemed too dangerous for Ary to return to the outside world. So the administration arranged for Ary and other students to attend at foreign institutes of magic, as a diplomatic gesture to strengthen ties in light of the emerging crisis. As circumstances would have it, Ary would attend Hogwarts as a seventh year transfer. Ary's mother however could not accompany her due to the nature of the charges against her. She remained in Pakistan, under police protection, while the sihr helped advocate for her in the Pakistani legal system. Freshly arrived from Pakistan, with a letter of introduction, and a couple thousand pounds from the sihr organization to cover her living expenses, Ary begins her first year at Hogwarts. Personality: As a baccha posh, Ary grew up with many of the same privileges and expectations allowed to women in the West. She is quite physically active and enjoys playing soccer. That said however, Ary has always had a shy temperament and her experiences as the village pariah have only helped to make her more socially withdrawn. Because of her history, she is understandably nervous around other people and is particularly wary about unsolicited attention towards herself. In short, Ary is a girl who does not like drawing attention to herself. Despite her history of persecution however, Ary is rather naive when it comes to social interactions. The breadth of her socialization with other people have been limited to a very small number of family friends. Even outside her small circle of six people, the villagers had little reason to lie or hide their scorn for Ary and her mother. Because of this, Ary has learned to expect a certain degree of honesty from both her friends and her enemies. Consequently, she has trouble imagining the many ways in which others can lie to her or their reasons to do so. Ary therefore will respond erratically to lies or fabrications, even if they are white lies meant to protect her.
