Welcome to Hogwarts Interactive Role Play, one of the net's best in Harry Potter and Hogwarts role plays. We hope you enjoy your visit.

Here at Hogwarts our students are currently in their Seventh Year. Last year, the war against the Knights crescendoed into a direct attack against the school. Disappearances are still reported (or not) daily, and the Dark Lord and his Knights of Walpurgis have succeeded in spreading their message of "do as thou will" far and wide across the globe. Magical Law Enforcement, which is now the only authority in the wizarding world under Martial Law, has responded by tightening security, controlling the media, and strictly enforcing curfews and other laws. Their control is damaging to the people's freedom, and their hierarchy is a suspicious lot. It is clear that some members of the MLE like their new found power a bit too much, others see it necessary, but all are in serious danger of being consumed by it. But with the picture of just what Azariah Amaranth is after becoming ever clearer, and a third player in the form of a group called SAVIOR entering the scene, what will the MLE do next to ensure that they've got the situation under control?

The Elementium, the Higher Plane that had once been hidden just beyond the veil in the Department of Mysteries, and the Deathly Hallows. The pieces of the puzzle have been identified, but what picture do they make?

Today is Day 1 of Year Seven. Students have had time to recover from the Knight's attack, and are beginning to reluctantly return to the walls of Hogwarts. The safety of the school has been diminished, bringing up the question everyone must ask. Are you safe anywhere these days? It's up to each individual to decide their fate, where will you decide to go?

Duel in the Great Hall; Day 2 Period 3

So, it was time to meet Brock in the Great Hall. The last period seemed to go by pretty fast and he was hoping the day would continue moving like this. Honestly, he had no clue what it was Brock actually wanted him here for. As he walked through the corridors, he looked out to see if Hazel or Curtis was around. They were really the only students he watched out for. He thought he caught a glimpse of his girlfriend from a distance, but the girl turned around and he saw it wasn't her. He was glad he hadn't decided to walk closer and say anything.. that could have been pretty bad. All the while, he tried to look authoritative as he went down a few flights of stairs and kids of all ages passed. He wondered if he could even pull off looking powerful anymore-he was way too distracted.
He expected the room to be cleared by the time he got there, which was probably a bad thing if Baker was waiting for him. Cylas should have been there during the lunch period, but he had been urged aside by someone earlier in the day and ended up speaking with them throughout the whole period. He was glad he stayed aside to gather some info, but he had hoped he could have gotten back into the Great Hall before the period was done. Oh well. At least he was getting there early enough, right?
As the blond auror stepped into the Great Hall, he saw the tables were cleared of food, and that there were still a few students hanging around. Everyone seemed to turn to face him when he looked over. He spotted his girlfriend there in the group of students; he was surprised that professor Hicks wasn't there, seeing as she and Baker generally seemed inseparable anymore. Cy wondered why she put up with a guy like him, and then if there was anymore then just some kind of 'friendly' relationship happening. That thought was quickly erased- he didn't want to think about it really.
Ugh, you walk in love, Cylas. Right.. right..
He closed the door behind him. There wasn't anyone around he really recognized well. This was a little weird. Cylas approached Brock as professionally as possible, walking past Hazel without even a glance. Then he turned to the other man and nodded, "Baker." He said with all the respect he could muster up to the curious tone that was trying to escape him. He wasn't so sure about whether or not his face had hidden it so well. Why was he here exactly? And why were these students not in class?
He thought he was a rule breaker.

When he finally returned to the Great Hall, just prior to his appointment, Brock was surprised to find students still lingering around. Didn't they have a class about to start or something? "What is this, a book club?" he uttered sharply, paying them no more attention and instead setting to rearrange the furniture. One Gryffindor jumped up from his seat as it was unceremoniously hauled to the side. The Head Auror could recognize some of the faces from breakfast, when he'd told Elliot to meet him later, but how could they have known what they were up to? Pure curiosity, perhaps? Rumours truly spread like wildfire around the school even if there was nearly nothing to base them on.

The doors finally opened to reveal the younger man, but Baker seemingly couldn't care less, instead finishing his prepares as he neared closer. The teacher turned just in time for his subordinate's acknowledgement, crossing both arms on his chest. His eyes briefly flicked to the Ravenclaw Cylas had often appeared to be so drawn to, a tad disappointed at not being able to link the man's earlier absence to her. At the students' expectant stares, he barked, "What are you still doing here?" While kicking Hotshot's arse before an audience sounded tempting, Baker didn't plan the duel for that reason. Sure enough, it didn't take long for the kids to scramble out, but they were doing a rather poor job of inconspicuously spying on the adults all bunched up in the doorway. That was a good enough compromise.

"Alright, Hotshot," he addressed the Auror at last, "time you do something useful for once." Baker walked a couple of steps to the long row of tables set in the middle of the hall, leaning casually against it. His voice was lowered just enough so the onlookers couldn't overhear any key information. "The kids could use some of the training you somehow passed at the academy, but I can't really teach them all of it now, can I?" He wasn't going to go into details as to why, not considering Cylas worthy of the time the explanation would take. And it wasn't like he would ever manage to coach Amaranth's followers anything if he tried. "Instead, I've been considering dueling lessons. But I don't want you to use any advanced stuff that could make too much mess in unauthorized hands. That's why you've been chosen as my today's lucky opponent." A degrading smirked passed over Baker's features as he pushed off. "Now get your sorry ass on the table, the first one off or giving up's a loser." With that said, the man treaded over to the other end, carelessly pulling back the cuffs around his wrists as he did so.

Apparently, the students should not have been there. Cylas watched after Hazel as she got up to leave with the others. He wasn't facing the door, but he knew they were still hanging around. The younger man was surprised that his superior didn't try harder to get them to leave, but after a moment he realized it probably didn't matter.
Baker addressed him with the nickname he seemed to be so fond of, the younger Auror resisted the urge to roll his eyes. What was that, Baker wanted him to help him with this? Cylas considered it was best to not ask questions. He would be out of this mess soon. Sure, he agreed that students should learn a little more than what they had been taught, but he was wondering where the cutoff for 'advanced' would be exactly.
"Opponent fr today? In other words I'm just a warm up or something? Feeling like professorship has made you a little slow?" So, he could have just kept his mouth closed and followed orders. "Well, I think this is the first time since I've known you that you've made me feel needed. Makes me feel all sorts of warm and fuzzy inside." But that wouldn't be much fun, would it? Cylas had to stop himself from suggesting that they just invite the students back in. Why not? As long as they were going to stand there on the outside and peek in anyway... He was wondering by chance if he just didn't want his students to lose respect if he were to be beat by an underling. Cylas also had to consider the point that he would be thoroughly distracted by Hazel and.. her costume. Brock had picked a prime day for this sort of thing.
Cy had to smirk back at the other Auror, and had to mask how hilarious his order actually sounded. He made his way onto the table and took out his wand. In the back of his head somewhere, important questions arose; Who was judging this? How far is too far?
These good questions seemed to be drowned out by a loud whistle he recalled from the old spaghetti western. It caught him off guard and he laughed while the Professor prepared for the duel by adjusting his cuffs. Cy shook his head, "Ready when you are, Baker." He said, wand at the ready, "You first?"
As long as there was no one judging, there was no use for a coin toss here.

Why was it again he chose this idiot for the task? It took Baker a moment to remind himself. He didn't need anyone overly experienced or skilled in the first place, as, if he decided to go through with this, anyone with Auror training could easily assist with the basics. The reason he didn't ask Caius or someone equally reliable was simple - they were more useful elsewhere. Though, a dummy would have no doubt been a more worthy opponent than the resident rock star. Brock refraining from stating any of these thoughts as it was pointless to spend his sparse time on meaningless bickering. He could happily do that after work, if it ever ended.

A little slow, thought? A low chuckle escaped his lips as he shook his head. Someone was lucky their boss didn't have a habit of firing his staff for cheek. True, he wasn't in the most comfortable or practical garb for a duel, his usual suits being much less restricting, but surely he could face Elliot in a suit of armour and not even break a sweat. Brock was eager to hear the smartarse after being decked with a sixth year spell. "Don't get used to it choir boy," was his jaunty reply, smirk in tow, "and worry about your fancy styling instead." Hoisting himself onto the other end of the row of tables, Brock drew his trusty, albeit slightly battered, chestnut wand.

A large part of him wanted to have an outright proper duel, to shut the younger Auror up for good, but Brock resisted the urge to smash the humour right off his face. Frankly, he shouldn't even have to prove himself before such a wimp, and yet it was easier said than done for someone with an ego reaching the height of Astronomy Tower. But he refused to lose control for it, not even because of-- The man thought better of allowing his thoughts steer that way and raised his wand instead; a brief roll of his eyes. No point of arguing over who should go first, really. And to be fair even with no rules set and it only being a trial, Brock launched his first spell with a verbal notice. "Expelliarmus." Not something he planned on repeating.

(OOT: All the students are welcome to pour in if they wish.)

Choir boy? Cylas shook his head and tried not to laugh. "Aww, really? I kinda liked that feeling, man." Brock was drawing his wand up now. Cylas still wasn't sure why this was necessary at all. If Brock felt his students needed to be taught this, why didn't he just teach them? Guy probably just felt the need to beat up on someone. That was alright though, the younger man could use something like this to get some frustration out.
Of course, the first thing to do is disarm your opponent. Really though, how much was that going to teach someone? In most cases that could end a battle, right there. This wasn't any fun, not to mention Cy knew he could have been more prepared for such an overly used one. He just needed to focus. He felt his back hit the table and he slid a bit, his wand flew from his hand and hit the floor. "Well, you got my attention." He said as he got up. By Brock's rules, he was technically still in this.
"Accio wand." Wandless magic was probably not the best idea for this, but at least he wasn't attempting on using it farther than retrieving the one thing he could use fairly in a duel. The cherry wood jumped up and skidded across the table, Cy had to reach down quickly to grasp it before it slid off the other side.
The students were starting to make their way back in, now. Wondering why the head of the MLE and their professor was shooting spells at his subordinate, most likely. Well, he probably would have done the same if he were in their situation, curious people kids were. "Tarantallegra!" He commanded with a wave of his wand. If the kids were looking for a show, he'd make sure to give them one.

Hazel was amongst the students who had been shooed from the Great Hall. There was no part of her that had been planning on going to Magical Concepts. The group of students didn't disperse. Their intrigue, in fact, piqued by the fact that they had been removed. The crowd huddled, trying to sneak a peak at what was happening inside, only seemed to gather more curious students. Whispers were flinging back and forth; "A fight!" Someone close to the door yelled excitedly. There wasn't a great deal of love for the aurors and the excitement that was had over the proclamation quickly overcame the counter cries, telling the truth of the situation. The Ravenclaw couldn't see anything, she was pushed too far back in the crowd. Worry strummed through her at the excited shouts. It didn't make sense, however. The Ravenclaw had been there when Brock had asked for Cylas's presence, it had sounded more official than something like that. Weren't they grown men? Surely they wouldn't just fight. She was ashamed, not really, to say she was one of the ones that encouraged the students back in.

It hadn't been hard, everyone was curious. Those at the back started huddling in closer and soon the ones at the front were forced in. They remained huddled at the entrance, however. No one wanted to face Brock's fury. After all, he'd probably give everyone in the room a detention cleaning the wash rooms with little more than a toothbrush without a second thought. Nor did anyone want to get in the way of a duel between two aurors. That was just asking for trouble... though they seemed to be using low level spells at the moment. Once inside the Great Hall she quietly struggled to get to the edge of the crowd, so she could actually see what was going on... It became quite apparent the fight wasn't a serious one but the students hung around, curious as to see what would happen next. Perhaps hoping it would escalate. One of the more boisterous students was trying to get people to place bets...

Alistair, who had been quite disappointed in the Transfiguration lesson and the fact that he hadn't been able to attempt transfiguring a dragon had stayed behind after most students left to throw some questions at their instructor. The head of house had seemed far too distracted to properly answer him, however and had at one point, unwittingly, given him permission to try. The prefect wasn't the sort to take advantage of such a lapse, however but had watched with a lot of curiosity what happened between Hack over lunch. It only occurred to him, a great deal after she had stormed off, that she might have been upset over what she had heard about Brock's class. It was because of all this that he didn't really get a chance to eat until most of the students were clearing out, by which point he'd heard some interesting gossip about a duel... He was greatly amused as he realized who the duel was between.

It was very propitious that everyone was all riled up about the fight. It was mostly in good humour that he started placing bets. Especially since blondie had been knocked onto his back by a disarmer. "If that chum wins I'll eat my hat!" He argued, with a broad grin, with someone who had decided to take him up on his offer. Not that he was wearing a hat. Anyone willing to bet in the younger auror's favour had a few bolts short a full set. Alistair wasn't really looking to make any money, just get a few laughs. There were some people taking him seriously, though. A few were, good naturedly defending the younger auror, but not being brave enough to bet in his favour. Most, he assumed, were humouring him in order to see if he would actually live up to the crazy claims he was making. Which, admittedly, were getting more ridiculous by the second.

Well, that was... unexpected. Brock blinked once to ascertain his senses weren't fooling him and that he really managed to knock down one of his subordinates with a simple disarming charm. What was it, a second year spell? Obviously, he had overestimated the wuss. As the momentary initial shock passed, the Head Auror was overcome by an urge to laugh his arse off. But it would be entirely too wrong to give in, because this wasn't funny, it was pathetic. Still, he could hardly help it. Turning his back on Cylas, Brock pinched the bridge of his nose and willed his shoulders not to shake, trying to appear ridiculing instead. Which would only be redundant. But he succeeded, more or less.

While on one hand, Baker stopped caring about the presence of the students, because what could go wrong, really? On the other, Hot Shot was beginning to prove himself the embarrassment of the Auror Office he had always deemed him to be. But it was too late, the damage had already been done and all Brock could do was show that not all of the enforcers were this incompetent. The low clattering sound from behind caused him to glance over his shoulder, and make a halfway turn back towards his opponent once his wand was sighted. The clumsy use of wandless magic wasn't enough to change his opinion about the younger man. In fact, making the whole castle disappear wouldn't even bring him close. "About ready?" he asked impatiently, but didn't have to wait long for Elliot's move. Having expected it, the spell rebounded off his brisk shielding charm and right into a student who was getting way too close to the tables. Coincidence? Brock seemed unfazed by the Gryffindor's solo quickstep along the wall and kept his eyes trained on his target. Perhaps Hot Shot needed a bit of encouragement, and maybe he could just turn this farce into a learning experience after all.

"What the hell was that? Something your grandma taught you?" the shorter man exclaimed, throwing his hands outwards mockingly as he at last turned to face the younger Auror. A few students snickered and their betting was becoming fairly obvious, which was exactly what Brock needed. "Stop shitting around or I'll put you in my Fourth Year class," he addressed Elliot starkly, before his lips twitched into a slight smirk, "and Balls... make that a double." With that, his left hand rose up once more, a stunner shooting out of his wand. No verbal clues this time. Baker wasn't exactly sure how far he'd be willing to take his assistant's humiliation if he didn't man up. Fire him, possibly? Now, that wasn't an unpleasant thought at all.

Surprisingly with her wand returned, after having attacked a professor and the Head of MLE earlier, Beth had made it to Transfiguration barely in time. The girl couldn't quite agree with most of the other students' claims about the awfulness of their previous class, but she was too much of a chicken to voice her opinion. And perhaps she was the odd one out just for her residual obsession with Aurors, yet alone having the privilege of trying out some of their training methods. It wasn't like she was going to get this close to her dream, former dream, ever again in her life. But looking back, Beth wished she had said something because the look on Professor Hick's face, during the class and lunch, suggested she wasn't very pleased with the reviews on Baker's lesson. Not that he appeared overly shaken by it, if he even knew what it was about.

Sadly, she had missed Alistair during lunch and was eager to find him, if only to share new gossip, err news about Hack. That wasn't the only reason she wished to see her friend of course but sharing this hobby gave her an excuse to seek out his company without seeming exceedingly clingy. That was the theory, anyway. She really wasn't... clingy, was she? Nevertheless, the Hufflepuff overheard the fellow Prefect, another good excuse, was last seen in the Great Hall, her current direction. Why he was still there with Concepts almost starting was a mystery to her. One that baffled her further once she sighted the small crowd pushing its way into the same room.

Beth's brow furrowed in puzzlement as she peered in, taking in the scene. It slowly became revealed why two adults were poised on some tables, aiming wands at one another, as some of the students' chatter reached her straining ears. Wait a minute, was Ali proposing to eat his own hat and Baker joining him? That was definitely new. The girl cautiously pushed her way through the group, careful not to step too closely lest she ended up like the poor sod now switching into waltz, and eventually reached her friend. "Gambling, Ser Alistair, really?" she declared from behind him with a growing smile. How was it, again, that he managed to make her forget all the pesky worries without even saying anything?

Brock didn't seem to be amused.. as usual. Not that Cylas ever felt the need to keep Brock amused, it wasn't really worth his time. He felt bad for the kid that the move got deflected on, "Had to aim at a student?" And he was an embarrassment to the office... that was kind of a scary thought.
Cy couldn't help but laugh at the picture of his non-magical grandparents trying to teach him any kind of magic, "Hey look, I'm just playing follow the leader here. You are the one setting the rules last time I checked. You throw a low level spell at me, it's what you are gonna get back. I'm no professor, that's your gig, not mine." It probably seemed like he was trying to get fired. At this point he didn't really care, though he was now starting to see why there was no reason for students to be here.
The younger Auror meant to say more, but his superior was quick to cast another spell. Cylas blocked it, throwing it into the wall rather than allowing it to hit a student. Cylas was quick to return, shouting off a few lower level spells quickly, and then letting a more powerful one go without voicing. One of the weaker spells hit the table, icing over the wood under the older auror. A couple minor ones, a binding spell, easily blocked, and another weak offensive spell, taught in no higher than year four. One of the two more powerful ones was meant to disorient his opponent, and the last one left unsaid was there to force the other man on his back and eventually to the ground, the ice hopefully adding a little extra give so he would slide off. This depended, of course, on how distracted the other Auror really was. Cy prepared himself for a return as he wasn't sure how Brock was going to react. He wasn't stupid, Brock was a powerful Auror for sure. He was hoping that this would be way to show the other man that Cylas was more than just the ex rock star, but he wasn't hanging on any deep want of approval.
The students were talking excitedly. His eyes narrowed, and he tried to not look to see if Hazel was back. He almost hoped she wasn't with them, not that she couldn't hold her own, but it was better for him knowing she wouldn't become a victim of their carelessness. Not that he didn't feel that way for all of them, but he didn't know how far this was going to go. He hoped at least any younger students would get out before something stupid happened.

Emma was planning on skipping this next class. The redhead hadn't planned on sticking around here, but as the Great Hall became more and more deserted, she saw that there were quite a few students still hanging around. When she questioned a fellow Gryffindor, Rikard Attson, he told her about some rumor that was going around. How he, or really anyone else found out about this, she didn't know. When it came down to it, it seemed as though there were enough people sticking around to see that she wouldn't be the only one to leave looking like a fool if it wasn't true. On the other hand, if it was true, it would be extremely interesting to see, two Auror's meeting here in 'secret..' had to be good. She was curious, of course, because she was hoping to be an Auror.
She followed the rest as Brock shooed them out the door. The younger man looked familiar, but she didn't really get to know many of their names other than Professor Baker. As they all crowded around the door, she considered just leaving and spending the period napping in the dorm like she had planned, but it didn't take long for her interest to go back up when they started talking about a fight happening. Both Hufflepuff prefects were here (great examples to their housemates,) one was trying to place bets, (prime example, for sure.) They all started filing back in.
At Professor Baker's deflection, Rikard began to dance, even up the wall. Emma found it odd that an Auror would use such a silly spell, and though she kind of felt bad for her classmate, she couldn't help but giggle at the sight with many of the others that were there. The idea that she could be hit with something just as easily was a missing one. She didn't know who would win such a fight, but she turned to the Hufflepuff shouting bluffs out to the others, "I'll take that bet, Alistair." Some students laughed at her, but she shrugged. Not that she thought the other man would win over the DADA Professor and his boss, but she figured, hey, what did she have to lose really? This whole thing was going to be entertaining in the least if stuff like that was gonna jump out from the two 'Professionals' up there.
And hey, she just might learn a thing or two.. if they didn't goof around.

Hazel blinked as a spell whizzed past her nose. Well, this was a stupid idea. The spell missed her by some chance opportunity and found its way towards a suddenly dancing Gryffindor. Everyone seemed to be having a laugh at Cylas's expense, not that it seemed to bother the blonde auror. She didn't want to actively defend him anywhere near where Baker could hear, not really. Trying not to read into what was happening too much, she went to help the poor waltzing boy. It took her a few moments to contain her giggling before her wand was pulled out. A quick spell and the boy, Rikard, was thanking her with a bit more gratitude than was necessary. The teen turned, once more, to the fight. Cylas had deflected the spell into the wall, obviously making a point to the older auror. As much as she'd like to think the two aurors wouldn't send anything serious into the crowd of students, anything could happen if the battle got heated.

She chewed her lower lip unhappily for a small moment, torn between watching the fight and maybe getting some of the younger years out of the room... Her eyes widened at the sudden barrage of spells. Was this what an actual duel was like? It was one thing to read about magical battles in a book and another thing entirely to witness one. Certainly anything she and a fellow student could accomplish would be far from impressive. The teen considered, with disdain, what had happened in her last class and found herself wishing Cylas would knock the man back on his ass. Any thoughts of saving younger years from the fallout of the battle was momentarily lost, she had almost forgot to re-pocket her wand after helping the Gryffindor.

Alistair had not been expecting to be addressed by the lead auror himself. The excitement of it all was rapidly lost upon the man as Beth apprehended him. Caught red handed in, admittedly, at least two things a prefect shouldn't be doing all he could do was smile as innocently as possible and hope she let him off because he was such a cutie. This was actually a hard thing to accomplish because every time he was referred to as 'ser' a dorky sort of smile swept across his features. "You wouldn't happen to have a hat, would you?" The Hufflepuff questioned, leaning in with the strictest confidence. It really wouldn't do any good if people found out he didn't actually have one on him. He was glad to see her though, admittedly, they weren't posing a very good example for the students. Well, worse came to worse, they could pretend they had been trying to restore order, or something silly like that. His head turned, as a spell was deflected and sizzled into the wall opposite the group of students.

If anything it seemed like Brock was having an exciting day. From teaching students about unforgivables to battling it out with one of his subordinates. He wondered, briefly, if this had anything to do with the fact that he had to lead the drab life of Professor as opposed to what he was normally doing. Stir crazy? That certainly didn't seem like a good thing. Next thing anyone knew the castle would be falling around their ears. Ali blinked as someone said his name, met the Gryffindor with a lopsided grin. "Here," He offered up his hand to the girl. "You have to shake on bets, you know." Actually, he wasn't really sure on this matter. But it seemed like a plausible rule, didn't it? "Upon your honour! If blondie wins and I don't eat my- Wait-" The Hufflepuff paused, considered, a few people laughed. "Upon my honour!" After sorting all that business up he turned back to Beth.

"This could get dangerous." Again, for her ears only. It was merely speculation, on his part. Alistair was at a loss on what they could do. Finding a Professor to stop this, or at least force the students to class, was at the top of the list. But there was a large part of him that didn't want to miss the battle! The man doubted if they could clear the room themselves. Maybe Beth would have an idea. The pair could maybe defend against any spells that happened to fly towards the group... But that seemed a bit over zealous. His brown eyes were drawn back to the table as it iced over. What was blondie trying to do? If he thought simply buffeting out spells won battles, then... Oh... Was that clever? Disguising a spell under a bunch of lower end ones?

Brock barely managed to halt the threatening roll of his eyes at Cylas' comment. As if the announced spell had been something dangerous. At least now the students were keeping a relatively safe distance. Although, probably not safe enough for the lousy dueller confronting him. If he was to only accidentally follow his example with anything harmful, Brock wouldn't hesitate to personally hang him from the ceiling for the rest of the day - by his privates. Still, the older man could hardly deny to himself the challenge the crowd presented. Had he been duelling someone trustworthy, hell he would allow the kids to lay by his feet with the confidence in his duelling skill. But he felt no need to explain himself to Elliot.

In all seriousness, Hot Shot was beginning to get on Baker's nerves with the petty excuses. "Oh, I'm sorry for not mentioning this is not a dance class," he retorted sharply. What next, was he going to make him sing? Prank spells were not to be used in a real fight, in his mind, which was what he wanted to simulate on a slightly lower level. And that was exactly the reason why he originally intended to try this out before involving students. There was an idea... why not pit a student against the blonde and watch him get taken down by a kid? But, finally, the boring spat was over and things at last started to move on.

The fact that the young poor excuse for an Auror didn't end up a senseless heap on the floor ineluctably brought Baker back on his toes, but the spew of spells made him relax momentarily. Except for one. Even as he took a step backwards from the ice forming beneath him, making the advancing ropes turn into black ash, Brock could count five spells in total, but was disgruntled at not being able to tell what the last one was. Should have paid more attention. The next one was deflected back to its source and the disorienting charm barely missed with Brock balancing at the edge of the table. Whose bloody idea was it to use tables as the only duelling space? The sneaky last omitted incantation brushed against the teacher's chest, pushing him exactly the wrong way, and there was all he could do to null the gravity pushing him to the floor. With the tips of his shoes hinging him to the hard wood, Brock couldn't say it was a particularly comfortable position. Well, at least he hasn't lost.

Not wanting to remain exposed, he swiftly brought himself upright, wand at the ready. It had been quite some time when he was last caught off guard in a battle, and Brock hated letting it happen. But Hot Shot, really? Who would have thought? A fluke or not... "What, only five?" the man chuckled mirthlessly as he sent forth one of his favourites. The surface of the table row seemed to instantly catch on fire in the middle, the flames quickly spreading towards the other end. Baker prided himself for having possibly the vastest repertoire of fire spells of the whole MLE, it was almost like his signature. But this particular spell, despite looking decidedly mean, nearly reaching his height, was entirely harmless. It was a cool flame, used to scare and panic opponents Brock wasn't allowed to hurt. You couldn't put it out with water as it wasn't exactly real, and it gave him a chance to hide his second strike. A simple non-verbal Depulso. Not aimed at the wizard but the piece of furniture beneath him.

Any faked disapproval Beth might have attempted to project was thwarted abruptly when faced with Alistair's stupidly heart-warming smile. The girl folded her hands and pouted rather unsuccessfully, then glanced upwards through her heedless fringe to find that, indeed, there was no brim in sight. Then she addressed him with the same secrecy, "must have lost it on the way. But you could always pretend yours is invisible." Then he wouldn't actually have to eat anything. And why was she helping, they even weren't allowed to be there, or were they? Her attention was brought back to the centre of the hall as the duel got a tad more interesting and Alistair reverted to his new unprofitable business.

Overhearing a bit of what he was saying to the Gryffindor, an idea struck her. Reaching inside the satchel hooked over her neck and shoulder, she drew a blank sheet of parchment. A few not-overly-precise folds later, the masterpiece was done and Beth lost her battle attempting to look disinterested in the fight; her intrigue shining right through. She only just managed to hide the creation behind her back when her friend returned. Now she felt silly. When did she forget about her duties? Beth took a thoughtful glance around before responding, "Brock is a teacher isn't he?" A small smirk appeared. "He would have stopped us if we shouldn't be here." That was a long shot, but the misbehaving Hufflepuff Beth didn't know a year ago was just too curious to leave. And if they tried to make others go, well that couldn't end well, could it? Revealing the magnificently plain parchment hat she had been hiding, Beth settled it atop Alistair's head before circling to stand next to him, a hand remaining loosely draped on his shoulder. "I think we'll just have to make sure none of the students gets hurt," she announced impishly, her wand slipping into her free hand. However, this bold spirit didn't stay long with her, as the fiery wall made the girl jump on the spot. How they were to prevent any stray spells from hitting anyone was suddenly a much harder question to answer.

"Well you know, I figured, you dance and I'll sing.. I mean, I'm sure having it the other way around would be much less enjoyable."
The spell that flew back at him followed the first one he deflected, hitting the wall away from the students and disappearing with a loud bang that echoed down through the hall. What happened next was unexpected... Cylas had no idea that it was ok to suddenly set the tables on fire; then again, he wasn't the one making up the rules here, was he? At first, he thought to conjure water, but it didn't help at all. Cylas knew he was going to have to 'walk through fire' sometimes... but not so literally- hey, you get what you speak. Unfortunately, by the time he realized the flames were harmless, the table beneath him began to shift. Well, he must have missed something. Brock had every reason to needle him, he definitely was not on his game at all. It was apparent to him that he would have to move, and away from the direction the table was going. Thankfully, everything was directed away from the students this time!
As the table began to lift and turn, the weak flames now surrounding him, he went to jump to the next table over. Without much of a running start, he was able to kick off of the side. Unfortunately, he hadn't gained enough force behind the leap to catch the next table over. Instead, one foot landed rather hard on the bench of the next table, but just at the edge. He winced at the pain in from the impact in his knee, but didn't mind, knowing any damage would be easily taken care of. The second foot caught the edge but slipped off to the ground, ending in Cy having to catch himself, throwing his hands onto the table before landing face first into it.
Ok, so, this didn't end so bad. Maybe now he could just go on about his business now? Today was really not a day he wanted to deal with all the crap Brock was throwing at him. Plus, it wasn't like he hadn't tried.. though there was a small part of him that wished he hadn't screwed up, and it could have continued. Ugh, he felt winy on the inside. Honestly, what Brock thought of him and his performance didn't matter to him. Cy still had people who cared about him and loved him dearly even if he screwed up, one right here in this room. Ok, two technically.
Finally he picked himself up off of the table and turned to Baker, hands in the air in surrender, though he wouldn't let his wand out of his hand just yet. There was a small smile on his face, forced, though not allowing it to be smug, "There you go, duel over, I'm the dead guy cos I fell off the table." So unlike him to admit defeat so easily.. but, it was the rules. Feet not on table, (though slightly unrealistic to an actual duel,) you loose fair and square. "You win, Baker. Congrats."

Ridiculous arguments were not something Brock wanted to get involved in during work hours, as they could go out of hand and hold him up. There usually simply wasn't enough time on his hands to afford that. But since he was fairly decent at multitasking, even as he dodged a spell, the man retorted, "Not really a fan, thanks. But I'm sure there's someone here who wouldn't turn you down." The tone of his voice suggested they both knew who it was. True, Hot Shot and Hooter might have played it safe around him lately, but Baker wasn't about to forget about his earlier suspicions. Especially now, when the rumour was Elliot was seeing someone at Hogwarts. One could not easily escape such gossip, though the kind involving him and a certain Transfiguration Professor seemed to be far better guarded, for obvious reasons. He was convinced; however, the pair wouldn't be able to keep it a secret much longer.

The distraction was working as planned and Brock decided against adding a couple of insuring spells, curious whether this combination would be enough. With amusement, he folded his hands behind his back and watched the younger Auror strive, with little success, against the flames and gravity. Lifting an eyebrow at the seemingly painful landing, Baker waited for Cylas to get back up. But to his astonishment, his subordinate was giving up completely. For bloody touching the floor with one foot? The minimum he could do was demand a re-match to at least try to prove he wasn't a complete waste of his time. "The hell is this?" he uttered critically, before continuing in mock pity, "Oh, did you get hurt?"

Perhaps he really should have chosen someone with actual spine to back up the gloating. But maybe he didn't really want to fire the son of one of the greatest Aurors he'd ever known without being certain he wasn't fit for the post. The teacher waved his hand dismissively, before getting another idea. "Andrew was right, you know," the man paused to scoff, and went on, "you really are useless." Those weren't his exact words but Brock had a word with Elliot Sr. before he passed and believed he was doing them both a favour. If the singer couldn't man up and do the job, it was better he didn't do it at all. It was a dangerous profession and, from experience, Baker knew the weak links were the first to drop out - or rather drop dead.

Precious and Collin entered the hall, a bit late to the fiasco in the area. "What the...?" She glanced around at the mess. Immediately, she wanted to know what had happened and who was involved. Had the Knights attacked? Had a couple third years gotten out of hand? There was few faces she recognized in the hall, so her sources of information where limited.

She turned to her... boyfriend. Boyfriend. What an odd thought! Her boyfriend, Collin Wickham. Should she touch him? Hold his hand? Kiss him? "Do you have any idea what's going on?" asked Precious. It was a conversation starter; of course he didn't know, he had been in the dungeon with her!

There was a very small moment of triumph that saw Brock Baker hanging onto the table with only his toes- rapidly dispersed as the auror recovered and reciprocated. (Really she didn't even get to be worried over the vague insinuation towards her...) She was one of the students that staggered backwards at the great wall of flame. It took her entirely too long to realize that it wasn't actual flame. What had suddenly exploded out of Baker's wand had heat but not to the excruciating extent it should. It took only seconds for the table to lunge out from beneath Cylas's feet. Hazel was immediately annoyed though she had no justification for it. Perhaps seeing the man nearly face plant into a table... It appeared the fight was over. At least, it appeared Cylas would have liked the duel to be over.

Baker apparently had other plans. How crass could a man get? There had never been a time when she'd wanted to physically injure someone because of words spoken. She couldn't imagine what Cylas would be feeling and found herself moving towards him, no thought to repercussions or consequences. She just wanted to help though she wasn't sure what being there would do. It would certainly be better than standing their like a lump while Baker spouted out such shit. What on earth was he trying to do here? Why was he so insistent in this? There was a very small moment of understanding, involving the hardships of the job itself, but she didn't want to understand Baker. She refused to believe getting an auror to attack you out of any sort of anger, grief?, would prove beneficial. Hazel found herself at the edge of the group of students, froze slightly, a mixture of fear coming both from the fire and stepping closer into the battle zone.

The pain in his knee was only there for a second, and he could still fight through it. It wasn't any physical pain stopping him from wanting to continue at all, just at the moment, he had too much going on mentally. Cy knew that wasn't a good reason, he should be level-minded at all times, and for something like this especially. Brock was a powerful auror, with much more experience than him; the younger man knew that he should have still requested a rematch, something to prove himself worthy in his superior's eyes. Still, he was not looking to please Brock. The first comment made was pushed away, trusting that Hazel wouldn't react. For someone who had so much going on about him and someone else, Brock certainly seemed to have no problem bringing the subject up. Not that what was happening between Cy and Hazel was the better of the two rumors, and not that Cy was surprised either.
The younger man had figured that he had landed off of the table. According to the rules, that was it. Again, should he have maybe asked for a rematch instead of giving up so quickly? Anyone else probably would have. At the same time, he figured he was doing Brock a favor in showing him that he was exactly what he thought of him. Cylas rolled his eyes at the ridiculous tone from the other man. Right now, if he were to get fired for it, then so be it. Cy felt at the end of his rope, and something somewhere had to come around that he could grasp onto. Funny how this prep duel had actually made him feel worse than he felt before it started. So much for letting out some frustration.
It took a second for the next comment to sink in. Cy had turned himself around, planned on walking away from Brock and not letting the older man get to him. He was going by his rules, he landed off the table. For Cy, things like that were black and white, and it was pretty obvious to him that he lost. The younger auror froze, his mind suddenly whirling; everything he could possibly do to inflict some real damage to the bastard, from a list of spells to a good old fashioned punch. Why was he trying so hard to..? For a moment he was calmed, taking in a deep breath as he saw Hazel begin to move towards him. If anything, he should walk away for her sake. There was no use worrying her by continuing this fight. If he hadn't been so.. hurt? Cylas snapped out of his want to have her near him and shook his head in her general direction. He was still angry. The sound of the other man's voice as he had spoken kept replaying, and only because it seemed that Cy was allowing it to. Like he wanted to be angry.
The young auror turned back to Brock. He wanted to force a smile, he wanted to just walk away, that was the right thing to do, he knew that. Before he could force himself to, though, he waved his wand, sending a body-bind spell at the other man, but not voicing. Quickly after he sent out a powerful wave of Duprimo, pressing down, this time spoken. As soon as it left his mouth, Cylas was hit with what could happen here, not that Brock couldn't handle it, but the major stupidity of it all.. really letting his emotions get to him like that? If he could have been successful at this.. if he was in the least bit at all, was it really worth it here? A simple punch would have sufficed, no need to attempt breaking the man's bones. He figured that now he was upping the level, at least the flames Brock had sent him weren't real.
Brock had a way of doing this to people, he wasn't the first and probably wouldn't be the last, maybe he shouldn't feel so bad? Cylas set up himself up for a return, taking a moment to get back up on the tables. Rules were meant to be broken sometimes.
