Welcome to Hogwarts Interactive Role Play, one of the net's best in Harry Potter and Hogwarts role plays. We hope you enjoy your visit.

Here at Hogwarts our students are currently in their Seventh Year. Last year, the war against the Knights crescendoed into a direct attack against the school. Disappearances are still reported (or not) daily, and the Dark Lord and his Knights of Walpurgis have succeeded in spreading their message of "do as thou will" far and wide across the globe. Magical Law Enforcement, which is now the only authority in the wizarding world under Martial Law, has responded by tightening security, controlling the media, and strictly enforcing curfews and other laws. Their control is damaging to the people's freedom, and their hierarchy is a suspicious lot. It is clear that some members of the MLE like their new found power a bit too much, others see it necessary, but all are in serious danger of being consumed by it. But with the picture of just what Azariah Amaranth is after becoming ever clearer, and a third player in the form of a group called SAVIOR entering the scene, what will the MLE do next to ensure that they've got the situation under control?

The Elementium, the Higher Plane that had once been hidden just beyond the veil in the Department of Mysteries, and the Deathly Hallows. The pieces of the puzzle have been identified, but what picture do they make?

Today is Day 1 of Year Seven. Students have had time to recover from the Knight's attack, and are beginning to reluctantly return to the walls of Hogwarts. The safety of the school has been diminished, bringing up the question everyone must ask. Are you safe anywhere these days? It's up to each individual to decide their fate, where will you decide to go?

So did we have a plan for next gen's forum? Were we just going to museum this one and create a clone? Or were we going to try to archive everything here?

I'm just curious what everyone is thinking about this. I think it'd be easier to museum and clone.

Nooo, I like getting back to old topics if I'm really bored (or just want to recollect something I forgot/am not sure about).

Besides, I think Dave said we would be able to keep all the old threads (in a sub forum?), they just wouldn't be in the way. Right?

Seventh Year & Gryffindor Chaser. I love Dave. I AM THE SWAN QUEEEEEEEEN!

We wouldn't be archiving them or anything; what we would do is lock all the old topics so no one can post in them and just leave them where they are, and then we'd create a whole new board identical to this one and have a fresh start for next gen.

I mean, I think we were thinking about doing this. Last time Dave and a few other admins (including myself) talked about it, there was a whole debate about new forum vs. stay here. But that was a while ago, and there may be some new developments on the case since then. I don't know.

Unrelated to post above, but since we were discussing word requirements I have an alternative and/or supplementary idea.

I posted it in the minimum word count thread, so I'll just quote it here.

I believe in the paragraph requirement, but I think if we do impose a requirement, it should be only one. I also completely agree with Beth's point.

PS - A site I'm a member of does this interesting thing called "RP tutors". People post what they need help with in a specific board, then a RP Tutor (we can assign exemplary writers who are willing to this task) will coach them through a series of writing exercises, then critique what needs to be fixed. It's done loads for everyone on that site, and we can open it to everyone - members, admins, potential members, etc. etc. etc.

(PPS, I'll repost this in the re-vamp thread)

I agree that we need less meticulous plotting, more spontaneity. In terms of how we could actually do that with larger events, consider how we do things like Knight attacks and how we COULD do them:

Normally, we plan every instance of what will happen. This, like Dave said, creates a grocery list. It's almost like we're just posting to get to the thing we know is going to happen. We don't really ever explore or let things happen (even if its a stupid thing like a n00b doing n00bish powerplaying, ect.) We end up acting half the time just to protect our plots from outside forces (i.e.: said n00bs).

Instead, I say we just do it this way:

Ian: Alphonse wants to ruin some people's shit at Hogwarts. Maybe kill the Headmistress, ect.

Dave: Again? We already did that seven times!

Ian: Okay, nevermind.

OR!

Ian: Today, I think Alphonse could sneak into Hogwarts, impersonate a teacher, and kidnap someone.

Kane: I'd like to volunteer!

Ian: Okay!

Dave: As long as it doesn't interfere with my lesson.

And that's all we need to plan. Everything else allows for characters to develop in real time. Honestly, real writing is more like that, usually. There's some planning ahead, but there also needs to be opportunities for change. Face it: We plotted HIRP nearly into oblivion. I think we need to scale back.

Hell, I originally ended up doing a lot of the plot in the aftermath of STUFF THAT WAS NOT PLANNED. The Red Caps and the first big battle in third year? Most of it was off the cuff.

Thanks Beth!

I heard the sound of a thunder, it roared out a warnin'
I heard the roar of a wave that could drown the whole world
I heard one hundred drummers whose hands were a-blazin'
I heard ten thousand whisperin' and nobody listenin'
I heard one person starve, I heard many people laughin'
Heard the song of a poet who died in the gutter
Heard the sound of a clown who cried in the alley
And it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard
And it's a hard rain's a-gonna fall.

Sooooo double-post-apalooza right now. But did we EVER come up with a final say on what we're doing next gen when it comes to the forum?

I am in favour of archiving this and creating a new board.

So yeah, all in favour say I?

Nope.

But I was in favour of keeping this one and just moving everything into a new(?) First Gen section/forum. And believe Eme was of a similar opinion.

But, as I said, if you guys want to start next gen now, feel free to do that yourself. Not sure if I'd be grateful if you started achieving this one, though. :D
