| Welcome to Hogwarts Interactive Role Play, one of the net's best in Harry Potter and Hogwarts role plays. We hope you enjoy your visit. Here at Hogwarts our students are currently in their Seventh Year. Last year, the war against the Knights crescendoed into a direct attack against the school. Disappearances are still reported (or not) daily, and the Dark Lord and his Knights of Walpurgis have succeeded in spreading their message of "do as thou will" far and wide across the globe. Magical Law Enforcement, which is now the only authority in the wizarding world under Martial Law, has responded by tightening security, controlling the media, and strictly enforcing curfews and other laws. Their control is damaging to the people's freedom, and their hierarchy is a suspicious lot. It is clear that some members of the MLE like their new found power a bit too much, others see it necessary, but all are in serious danger of being consumed by it. But with the picture of just what Azariah Amaranth is after becoming ever clearer, and a third player in the form of a group called SAVIOR entering the scene, what will the MLE do next to ensure that they've got the situation under control? The Elementium, the Higher Plane that had once been hidden just beyond the veil in the Department of Mysteries, and the Deathly Hallows. The pieces of the puzzle have been identified, but what picture do they make? Today is Day 1 of Year Seven. Students have had time to recover from the Knight's attack, and are beginning to reluctantly return to the walls of Hogwarts. The safety of the school has been diminished, bringing up the question everyone must ask. Are you safe anywhere these days? It's up to each individual to decide their fate, where will you decide to go? You're currently viewing our forum as a guest. A thread for the people loyal to HIRP and who want to see some activity restored. I guess we all know that we need to pull some new members, get things going and generally increase people's interest in this site. So I'm here asking what you think we should do. I think it would be prudent to fix the plot. The main players of which have either grown uninterested or vanished into thin air. It wouldn't be fair to them to completely destroy all the hard work (five years worth) by completely changing things up. But if we keep things going as they are we are in for a very anti-climatic finish. So, I'm thinking a revolt within the KoW, something to throw the Dark Lord off his game (and preferably out of the running) and bring something interesting to the site. Or just, anything. I've been on this site that has 'events' every week or so that gives people something new to do with their characters. (This would have to be changed slightly as HIRP has a timeline...) This thread is open to any and all ideas on what we could do to pull in activity and interest. I'm not interested in excuses or anything else, if you have an idea and you're willing to put in the time to follow through with it then let's DO this! Alright, so I could definitely have Blackwood step out of the shadows and do what he wants for a change. Which would firstly be destroying MLE, and since they reside at Hogwarts... But letting KoW take over the castle would be too much like Deathly Hallows, wouldn't it? And secondly, power. Governing the whole wizarding world if he could. Point is, he could be the villain. But right now we just need a solution for this generation. One year left. So, let us just know what you'd like to do or encounter with your characters. Though in future, I think we shouldn't rely on individual characters so much. Also, I like the idea of events. But I've heard people saying no to ideas such as 'another' ball or a 'silly' snowball fight. Well, yet again, tell us what you want to do. Technically (surprisingly), Brock is still a head of MLE, so I could overrule Dave's no Quidditch decision and organize a mixed competition.

COUGH NEW SKIN TOO COUGH. srsly. The two skins (Blue/Gray one and Ashyn) have been here since I joined like 3 years ago. One of the best ways to spark new interest is an updated fresh look. Maybe our graphics and coding people could sort something out? Unless you want it to stay. And I like the idea of freshening up the plot. I don't know how active Ian's going to be, but Emma's been rather non-existent lately, and Ian kind of relayed off of their actions together in the main plot. Not only her, but a lot of other people too. We can't keep relying on the same people, while trying to keep others involved too. :/ Events are awesome. Kay? Kay. |

I agree about the Student vs Staff Quidditch. That would really be super interesting and it will let people post more and not feeling left out! Also, I was thinking to change ALL of my character's personalities and plots to accomodate to new people and other people who are in need of ANY plots they want. The other thing, can we please change the main plots around a bit? In honesty, I was feeling left out because only almost all the staff are in the main plot. I know, I'm such a blabbermouth, but I just gotta be honest. Change would be good. Recruiting new people will be awesome. |

I've already said this to Emejess over MSN, but I'll reiterate my feelings here for you guys to see. I, personally, feel that I've grown out of RPing, at least for the time being. I'm at a point in my life right now where I don't feel that I can make the time commitment required for such a plot heavy site, and I think that a lot of people can relate to that (remember the days when two people could post an entire conversation in just an hour, posting back and forth? I miss having the time to be able to do that). As much as I would like to continue on, I don't feel that I can (who knows, though; I might just make a return eventually). As far as the site as a whole goes, I wonder why activity has dwindled so heavily. Summer is usually our period of heaviest activity, and yet we've now gone two full years without many spikes at all. Why could this be? Is it because HP is now done and over with? With that said, you guys are free to do as you wish from here on out. I may be watching, I may not, but you have my blessing as to how you choose to proceed. |

I stopped going on here because of college and because I didn't see much activity so I slowly stopped checking the site for anything. For the most part everyone I plotted with is now inactive. Because we have got older our interests change and our lives become more hectic. When I was at school I had nothing to do on weekends which resulted in HIRP but now I'm at college even though I only go for three days I find myself socialising a lot more with my new friends which in turn stopped me from going on here and posting as much. That may have happened to a lot of people, people going into their first year of college or university people in their last year of school having to knuckle down for exams. And when you have been off a site for so long then generally you don't end up going back on it because you were without it for a long period of time. I think if this place were more active I would be on here, but I'm in another roleplay now and I am kind of obsessed with other things rather than Harry Potter which is sad ![]() BUT THAT IS JESS' TWO CENT ON DIS SHIZ i miss you guys <3 SO I VOTE WE DO A CAMPAIGN TO GET THIS SITE SOME MORE MEMBERS if you need people to make videos then I do media at college so I can get good camera stuff and film some stuff to advertise the site if you want. |

General thoughts: I echo everyone in saying there needs to be some plot overhaul. I think it has been difficult in the past for new people to integrate themselves into it in any meaningful way. Pre-created subplots are helpful on that account -- when new people apply, they can apply for a character involved in one of those subplots which ideally are created for a mix of existing/new characters. That and not being afraid to keep important roles open even if it means giving someone who has gone inactive the boot. It keeps things moving. As would maybe making some changes to the time system --> going by weeks or months or just regular days instead of day 1 period whatever, and making sure that it changes frequently and consistently. I also really think Anna is onto something with the skins/design of this site. It could definitely use some sprucing up. I have never really done any elaborate coding with zetaboards so I don't know the capabilities, but a fresh and inviting skin and overall layout is a great place to start. As for my own reasons leading towards inactivity, it has more to do with wanting more than HIRP could give me than outgrowing HP or roleplay. Lkike Jess, I've moved to another site which I think meets my actual RP needs better than HIRP did. It has a minimum word count, which has been tremendous in upping my post quality and leading to threads that challenge me on character development and better interaction between characters. They also are pickier with applications and the depth gone into in them, and as a consequence characters start out at a much better level of development which again leads to the kind of roleplay experience I was looking for. I really love being there as a whole, versus HIRP which I kept coming back to mostly because of the people (not that that's a bad thing! it's just one facet of the overall experience). I can't say whether or not I'd return to HIRP at full activity even after a revamp, but if you guys need any help with it, I am definitely here. Some thoughts on events: Personally, I think site-wide events are a great way to encourage threading and help people move along their own plots and challenge them to create new ones. I think a Qudditch game is a cool idea but I'm not sure if it would be a great one to start off with. In general I think there are some criteria for what makes an event successful: a) must be something that does not require much moderation. is there a fixed outcome? how does it resolve itself? will it be complicated to run? b) an activity which gives people freedom to further individual plots as well as be part of something site-wide. aka can most people can see their characters participating in/with? will an event lead to quality RP'ing between one or more characters? is there freedom as far as what they can do with it? Also, an "event" doesn't necessarily have to be something people attend. It can also be something that causes RP to happen without providing a particular place for characters to go. Ie Azakaban breakout and random characters are chosen to lose a family member or friend. The consequences of those deaths are explored by characters in threads. Other random thoughts: The out of character section sometimes has become the center of activity and that's an issue. More in-character games and activities there would be a good idea, instead of the millions of "what are you thinking about?" "what are you listening to?" "please tell me more about you personally instead of your character" threads. That way people can have fun with games and still be doing in-character stuff. Also, speaking of the OOC area, it would be really great if we had a better system of recycling finished and outdated threads, whether OOC or IC. It can get really cluttered. I also think that if things get started again, a downsizing in staff wouldn't be a bad idea. I personally think staff should be a minority of active members and that as a new member coming in it can feel more welcoming and in general just better to see a balance between staff/non-staff in the active membership. It gives a more inclusive vibe than going on and seeing the majority of threads and whatnot coming from staff. Idk it would just make me wonder. Anyway, personal opinion/preference going on with these things. |

Whoa Precious triple post whoa Guess what: There's this thing called the edit button idk if you've heard of it. Anyway, so let me address what I can. Regarding my inactivity, I have to say that I've not been around because a lot of the rest of the site has been dead (and I wasn't the most active RPer when I was even around anyway), and I felt like my presence wasn't exactly needed. Besides that, I have the feeling that I've begun to grow out of RPing, and as much as it pains me to say it, HIRP doesn't entirely appeal to me any longer. I appreciate all of the things HIRP has done for me, like introducing me to some of the best people on the planet and giving me so much insight as to how to write effectively, but I can't see myself on here as much as I was when I wasn't in high school. And I know that sounds like a lot of bullshit because honestly high school isn't even hard but I mean I just can't find the time to be here on HIRP as much as I used to. It hurts coming on once or twice a week and seeing no activity, because I've been with HIRP since there were multiple years and we were still on Invisionfree and the admins were all different and just I don't know, man. I don't know what happened. I do like the students vs staff Quidditch thing. I do like the downsizing idea (like I don't even need to be a moderator what is this what's the point I can't do anything but like update rosters and stuff) because I can see how it would be intimidating to come into a new site as an ordinary member and seeing the entire Active Users list full of administrators who are all RPing with each other. Also I feel like we never really included new members very much. Maybe that's because they don't want to interact with admins, but we tried making them feel a part of everything and that didn't work too well. The only people who became really great ordinary members were promoted to administrator (which I feel shouldn't just be an award for longevity, or contributing to the site, because then eventually everyone would be an admin). What I think we should do to show members who contribute more than the average person is, instead of making them an administrator, give them some kind of button or image or title when they post so they're like "Hell yeah I do shit" instead of "Hell yeah I was here three years so I can tell you what to do" (which I know we don't do that because we're all super cool). So uh: Staff vs Student Quidditch Downsizing Member appreciation other than promotion |

Going to dissect Sara's post here a little bit, because she has a ton of really really good points.I like this. If we were to continue/restart/whatever, I would elect to create a plot system that is much more moderated and consistent. Importing new themes is easy easy easy. If you guys want, take a look at the themes on ZB's resource forum (click me). I'd be more than happy to get them up and running. Also, as far as I know, there's no limit to how many different themes you can have on your board, so we can pretty much import any of them if we want variety. This is probably the most interesting part to me. On one hand, I did not want to create HIRP to be an elitist group of writers (Sam Wiley pwnz all wizards), but on the other hand, I wanted it to be strict enough to cater to the more picky people (myself included). Could you expand a bit on what you mean by RP needs? Which needs do you feel have not been met by HIRP, and which have? This is purely from a research point of view, as I'd like to know what has and has not worked for us. Any input that you can give in terms of what they have that we do not, or vice versa, would probably be the most useful information for us to revamp. I've always hated the OOC section lol, which is why I BARELY ever post in there, but at the same time, I can kind of see the appeal. I mean, to be honest, I've always been the oldest active member (save for John and Tristan), so it makes sense to me. It's been cool to see that we could provide a space for the teenagers who maybe needed some space to vent. Who knows? Maybe it's part of the camaraderie that has kept HIRP so strong. But at the same time, I have to wonder: perhaps the average age of the site has warded off older, more mature members. Not to say that I really care, because you guys have always been a hoot, but the OOC section certainly has been a wasteland of teenaged angst at times. This is cool with me. I'm alright with downsizing the staff list, but I still stand by what I've always said where, if someone returns, they are still entitled to the position that was granted to them (imagine how crappy it would be to come back and be a peasant again :P). Maybe staff members should be more "hidden", if you will. The activity lists at the bottom of the main index are always 75% bolded/italicized, and I can see what you guys mean by saying that it appears that we're a very staff heavy site, especially when we all have alternate accounts that we also use. Perhaps it's time to give bold/italicize the axe to make us appear more welcoming and to put less emphasis on adminship? |

I sort of miss the bold/italicized name. : P (I left the emphasis on Head Admins, because it seemed suitable. I also didn't bother changing mods, because, there's only one...) I should probably... fix Prefects as well? Should they still have some emphasis? I'm not going to be the one who downsizes the list of admins. If you guys want a change in theme I suggest you look through and find some themes you'd put up for suggestion. (Dave, I wouldn't mind learning how to do that, if you have the time to tell me.) All the suggestions are really great guys. But if you have any more in depth ideas on what could happen plot-wise, they would be much appreciated. I've never been good at doing this. If subplots are the way forward, what sort of plots do we create? I agree that we could use a better way of recycling old topics/threads. But starting to do that this far in just seems like a good way of having a bad time. In regards to fulfilment on roleplaying needs, Sara was talking about the length and quality of posts. An Ian-sized post, while quite rare on HIRP, is sort of the average on other sites. It does force you to really get into your character, almost assures some level of commitment. I'm not sure if we should do anything in regards to this, it could discourage people just as quickly as it could encourage them. |

I do like the idea of a minimum word requirement, because it encourages more well-constructed posts. This may sound elitist, but if somebody can't meet a minimum word count, or if they can't get their point across effectively, is that the kind of person we want here? I'm all for helping people improve their writing and letting people of all levels come in, but if you can't meet a required, say, even 300 words, what could you be getting across? Is the character so underdeveloped that we can't glance into their head a bit or try to find out more about them with each post? Reading back on that, it does sound really douchey (douche-y? douchE?) because, we are just a forum, after all. But we don't want a bunch of Sam Wileys running around, right? /end |

I dig all this. Also, perhaps some of the dwindling in activity could be because of the time it's taken to get here? I mean, HIRP's not like a Harry Potter book that you can read in a day if you want. We've all taken years to get our characters here. After awhile it's like living their life with all the monotony too, since it's almost in real time. However, I don't want that to change. I mean, I love building my characters up and getting attached to them over the years and making them into people. Just maybe broaden the scope so we don't end with this collapse of activity next time around. That's confusing. I mean, for me personally, it's difficult for me to get into another character nowadays. We don't really have the option to make new ones because we won't have as much time to get to know them as we did our other characters who we birthed from year three or whatever. I almost didn't join because of this. Having a character built at the end of the cycle seems pointless, but I do love that we have people in one year. Perhaps we could create a system where we could create students in other years as well? I mean, I don't even know how that would work to avoid influxes of first years, but maybe have them start with a character in the "main" year (like how anyone who would join HIRP now would be a 7th year) and then give them the opportunity after a while to create a character of a different age? That'd expand on family creation and make the school a little more realistic in some ways and keep that "new birth" kinda concept going. Maybe have openings in each year? Like so it's even? So if someone wants to make a first year, we have to have someone make a fifth year and sixth year and fourth year and whatever before creating ten more first years. IDK someone else figure out the specifics, but hopefully you get what I'm getting at. |

I'm going to start off by saying that I have really, really loved HIRP and everyone on it. I think that it's unique to get to know the other members like I have on here and that's one thing that has made this site really special and has set it apart from others. Everyone here is so welcoming and tries to get involved with new members. But even so, when I was a new member it was intimidating to get involved and try to integrate my characters into the big plots. It was easy enough to make small plots with people, but it's a whole different story trying to involve them in the big picture where the main roles seemed reserved for the admins or characters that had been on the site forever. This has already been said, but I think in the future the plot shouldn't rely on a few characters and instead work more to involve everyone. Maybe it should be less planned out who does what and based more on at the moment what makes sense. It's important to loosely plan out the plot, but who is active at the time changes dramatically over the course of the generation in an RP set up like this one where long term plots go on for so long. I also agree that the style of the site should be changed to make it more visually appealing. I think that would help attract new members. People might check out the site but decide not to join because of how it looks. I really like Avery's idea of having characters in different years. There are perks to having everyone be in the same year, but at the same time that kind of makes it so all your characters are at the same place in life. It would be nice to have some variation in their ages. I think there would have to be a limit to how many characters could be in each year, but it would kind of suck to be a new member and not get to put your character in the year you wanted because it was full. On the other hand. that would eliminate the generation thing because the RP would just flow I guess. But I still think it might be a good change to make if we found a good way to moderate it! I don't think a minimum word count would be a bad idea if posts weren't forced to be ridiculously long, but at least more than a paragraph just to make sure that posts meet a certain standard. I think adding some different events into the mix is definitely needed and just adding in more of the magic from Harry Potter in general. Like the ghosts wandering the halls, or the hidden passages in Hogwarts, characters using more magic, etc. I'll try to think of some ideas for this generation's plot to keep it moving along! |

In regards to having more than one year: We could have the timeline follow the main year and the lower years could set up a topic if they wanted to do something class related? A person first joining would have to make a character in the main year and then, once established, could start a second character where ever they like. Just a thought, anyway. And it poses another question, what happens to the younger generations of students once 'this gen' is over? |

Only problem with this is that it is very likely that their second character will be a first year. I feel like the best way to moderate it, as Winnie said, would be to keep a list somewhere and keep the classes moderately even. Say, having sort of "checkpoints" where we could have characters catch up? Maybe by fives? Threes? Of course, the ratio would vary based upon the number of active accounts, and it would have to be updated frequently. However, for the most part, people would have their choice as to which year they would like their character to be in. If the list of characters looked like this for example: 1st Years: 5 2nd Years: 2 3rd Years: 3 4th Years: 1 5th Years: 0 6th Years: 2 7th Years: 4 ^If, as in this example, checkpoints went by fives and someone wished to create a new character, they would need be able to create one in any year but 1st which would be "closed" until the rest of the years caught up. There is one more "opening" for a 7th year character, and so on. Once the other years all caught up at 5 members across the board, 1st years would be "open" again and five more first years could be created until the next checkpoint. Hence, the smaller the integral of checkpoint, the faster years positions open up. Essentially, this would eliminate the generation theme, yes, but it would create a new kind of dimension to HIRP and decrease the likelihood of facing a collapse at the end of each generation and keep a flow going throughout the site's life. Meaning, students are continually created in all ages, and a common "generation" would not be necessary. And as far as younger generations after "this gen" is over, we'd obviously have to wait until the end of this seventh year to implement anything this huge. It'd waaaaaay throw off any kind of moderation we'd want to achieve anyway. Come "next gen" instead of a next gen we'd just have this system if we chose to go wid dat. Hmmm. Although I do enjoy the idea of a constant flow of students in each year, it does introduce a massive amount of logistics in terms of moderating everything that's going on. Here's how I kind of see it: With multiple years, characters are more separated and it doesn't feel as bland because they're all doing something different (as opposed to having five seventh years all going to the same class), and the characters are different ages, so it allows you to be in different stages in their personal development and keeps things semi fresh. On the other hand, however, it's a LOT to keep track of, both for the person playing the character, as well as for the staff that need to moderate all the characters. Another thing I worry about is whether or not we'd have enough of each year. I mean, even with twenty active members, if they had four characters each (which is hard to keep track of, in my opinion!), you'd have 80 characters stretched across seven years... so basically we'd have around 11 kids in each year. I don't know about you guys, but I'm not sure it would feel the same, I guess? Although it wasn't really planned, I kind of like the idea of generations. Not only does it allow us to really really grow our characters over a huge length of time (sometimes a bad thing, though!), it gives us a fresh start afterwards while also allowing us to tie plots together (kids, world events, etc.). I personally prefer the idea of skipping ahead like ten years after a generation because it allows us more freedom to change the setting (ie: the political landscape, the state of the world, that sort of thing) in order to keep things new and exciting. I'm wondering... perhaps the solution is not to stretch ourselves across multiple years, but to instead stick with one year and have time move faster. The only question is, what kind of time scale would be suitable? I've never found that the amount of time periods we've allowed to be excessive, but perhaps the time we've spent on each has been a little extended. I'm kind of just shooting in the dark here. Feel free to comment/post opinions. |

Hmmm I see what you're saying. This design typically would work better for a bigger crowd... although that crowd might grow bigger if members are given the option to start small. I also see what you're getting at by speeding up time, although I really like this "at your own pace" time scheme we've got. It gives you a chance to post without feeling as though you've missed something even if you miss a real life day. Plus, the out of time option is always good. I also feel like zooming through time would be the only solution to getting that new start generation thing, and that's not good either. I think I've mentioned this before, but if we really wanted to change anything with the time, in my opinion it'd be to only RP major events and Holidays. Although, I guess that's what we've kind of been doing lately. So nevermind lol. BUT what if for this multiple years thing, we started small? For instance, we could open up one year at a time. Keep with the generation thing, but also add a year on either side of it. So like, pretend the main year is fourth this year instead of seventh, we open up the option to create third years? Then we'd only have third and fourth years and the rest NPCs until it kicked off/we got enough members to add a fifth year level. That way when we add new years they're still related closely enough that they can interact/date/fight/whatever, but there's still that age difference. If all goes AWESOME, eventually we'll have enough people to fill up all da classes. OR instead of opening up on either side, we could open up only below. That way if it was fourth year, we'd add a third. Then second. Then first. So we'd still have that generation thing going. Although that plan would screw up whenever the first group graduates. But it's a start. |
