| Welcome to Hogwarts Interactive Role Play, one of the net's best in Harry Potter and Hogwarts role plays. We hope you enjoy your visit. Here at Hogwarts our students are currently in their Seventh Year. Last year, the war against the Knights crescendoed into a direct attack against the school. Disappearances are still reported (or not) daily, and the Dark Lord and his Knights of Walpurgis have succeeded in spreading their message of "do as thou will" far and wide across the globe. Magical Law Enforcement, which is now the only authority in the wizarding world under Martial Law, has responded by tightening security, controlling the media, and strictly enforcing curfews and other laws. Their control is damaging to the people's freedom, and their hierarchy is a suspicious lot. It is clear that some members of the MLE like their new found power a bit too much, others see it necessary, but all are in serious danger of being consumed by it. But with the picture of just what Azariah Amaranth is after becoming ever clearer, and a third player in the form of a group called SAVIOR entering the scene, what will the MLE do next to ensure that they've got the situation under control? The Elementium, the Higher Plane that had once been hidden just beyond the veil in the Department of Mysteries, and the Deathly Hallows. The pieces of the puzzle have been identified, but what picture do they make? Today is Day 1 of Year Seven. Students have had time to recover from the Knight's attack, and are beginning to reluctantly return to the walls of Hogwarts. The safety of the school has been diminished, bringing up the question everyone must ask. Are you safe anywhere these days? It's up to each individual to decide their fate, where will you decide to go? You're currently viewing our forum as a guest. Ian stared at Kemp throughout the classroom discussion. He was paying attention with his years, but his eyes were both on Kemp. The Enforcer sat quietly and stoically. If he took any offense to anything being said, he did not show it. This made Ian all the more uneasy. Kemp appeared to be examining the class and its inhabitants very closely...as if he were gathering evidence. Ian found himself thinking of the differences between life and fire as he watched Kemp and Beth spoke. Beth might have been on to something. Fire, after all, burned its power source until it was gone, then went out. Whatever made people move didn't--wait... A thought struck Ian, causing him to forget Kemp for a moment. He raised his hand. "I think you're on a loser, Beth," said Ian, "All of that is too complicated." Some students turned to him expectantly. Even Kemp, to Ian's surprise, looked at him. Feeling as though he were now on trial, he spoke carefully. "The energy for a fire comes from what it is burning--wood and air," said Ian "Eventually, that energy runs out, and the fire dies, right? Eventually it consumes all of the wood, or whatever. Aren't we like fire, really? Eventually, we burn out just like fire if we're not...fed?" Ian sat back and crossed his arms, feeling more and more self conscious as he waited for the Professor to continue. ((OOC: There's a hole in Ian's argument. I want someone to point it out. You can keep feeding a person and a fire new energy, but always happens regardless? Someone point it out and we can bring this subject into full relevancy with the plot.)) |

Beth's response felt wrong, to him. He had always believed that there was one type of energy, universal through everything. It was taken, used and then returned. Energy could not be destroyed; only moved around. At least, that was what made sense in his mind. It bothered him that he did not know. Nor did he like looking down on what other people thought. He was glad his own sentence had not been shot down and felt a small pang for Beth, who had smiled encouragingly at him when he had begun speaking... Taking initiative and speaking out in front of people was difficult, embarrassing... In a small way, he wanted to avenge Beth for being shot down by the presumptous Slytherin kid. There was a hole in his arguement and against Alistair's better judgement he was talking again; "We'll die regardless of being fed or not." Whoops, that had been spoken into his arm and the resulting sentence came out muffled. It seemed trivial to point it out; "Humans cannot be sustained indefinately regardless of how much energy consumed..." Now he felt silly, twince he'd spoken up in class. He didn't want to get that sort of reputation. Though it had been easier to speak up a second time as he knew his musings weren't completely incorrect. Silently he returned his head to his arms, pretending nothing had been said. It was like a cycle, right? The energy flowed into people and then flowed out when they died... just like a fire used the energy to create heat... just as the heat dissipated into nothingness. He wondered what sort of point the Professor was coming to. Though he didn't think it was the same thing. Fire could be maintained, well, not if the wood supply was exhausted... but if you continued to feed a fire it would survive, even as the heat returned to whence it came. Something like that. Vaguely, he made the connection between the two even as he decided he and Beth should maybe talk more. |

"Even fire does not last forever," said the black boy in the back of the room. He was so short and so quiet that, even though he was one of but a few black students in the entire school, very few have ever noticed him. He smiled at Alistair, then continued: "All things must die," he said, "Fire consumes and gives heat to living things, which need it to stay alive." !Xabbu did not seem at all bashful when the entire class stared at him. "Grandfather Mantis stole Ostrich's heart and made the Sun with it. The Sun is a fire that burns so that others may live. But everyday the Sun burns itself down as it sings until all that is left is the Moon, which does not sing as brightly as the Sun. But that both were placed by Grandfather Mantis is something we should never forget. They were placed so that his children could survive, but even we, who take life from the sun, will die." Addie listened to the input of her peers thoughtfully, dwelling on her own train of thought. "This may be back tracking a little, or branching away from what others have been saying..." She paused, trying to gather her thoughts. "We've been comparing fire and the human body, and we've been comparing fire as though it represents the body. I don't quite see it that way. In my mind fire is more like the energy our body creates, almost a soul if you will. "I agree with !Xabbu in regards to the idea that everything runs out, everything dies. But, hypothetically, if it you had an infinite amount of air and wood you should be able to keep a fire going indefinitely. The wood and air are components of the fire's body. A human body ages and decays. Muggles have these medical procedures where they take a failing part of the body and replace it with a newer one, this saves the person's life in a lot of cases. "Assuming we had infinite material, I'd like to suggest that a human could continue on indefinitely as well. Of course, that's a huge ethical problem, as that would involve killing others for bits of their bodies." The Gryffindor girl surveyed the room non-nonchalantly, directing her gaze back to the professor. "I suppose I'm playing the devil's advocate. Everyone has been saying that the energy we have, the way we work is different than something like fire. I'm going to suggest the notion that it's actually quite similar." Addie fell silent, picking up her quill and dotting her parchment with ink absently. |

!Xabbu turned to Addie. He smiled broadly. "Exactly," he said, "But we can't replace the Sun when it burns out. Only Grandfather Mantis can, and he left the world with the other First People..." Then, !Xabbu turned and stared directly at Professor Tortal. "...after the All-Devourer had eaten the world and most of the First People, and Porcupine cut him open to free them." !Xabbu's face was serious. Edited by !Xabbu Basarwa, Dec 23 2011, 11:04:18 PM.

Ian took an involuntary sharp intake of breath when the thought struck him. "It spreads out!" he blurted, "Heat. It gets absorbed by everything around it. Fire is a strong concentration of heat, or something like that. But the heat spreads out into other things until there's no left at its source. It has gone into everything around it and you can't put it back. That's what's happening to the pure magical energy. It flows into everything around it. Once it flows out, it's not gone, but it's not in a strong enough concentration to do anything anymore." Ian didn't understand what !Xabbu was going on about at first. Thank Merlin Addie had translated, but the thought struck him. Fire is a strong concentration of heat, or something like that. "And," Ian was really reaching here, "if !Xabbu is right...we don't have the ability to put it back." Edited by Ian de Pointe du Lac, Dec 23 2011, 11:56:49 PM.

"But we can't replace the Sun when it burns out. Only Grandfather Mantis can, and he left the world with the other First People..." !Xabbu said. John's head whipped around and contorted in a bemused sort of look. Grandfather Mantis? What the hell was !Xabbu talking about, though they were in the same house. John always found the boy, a little strange to be completely honest. This seemed to be the latest in a string of weird thing !Xabbu believed in. John looked across the room and saw Addie eyeing Kemp. John had a feeling he knew what that was about, he knew that Addie was an Elementium, and despite John's belief that Kemp was right over all in regards to the Elementium, he still couldn't turn Addie in. The second, was something that Addie and John shared, neither had really noticed the MLE having made any efforts to find Tristan and bring him back. John would have appreciated at least the effort of them trying to find his friend, and Addie's boy friend, because their lack of effort seemed to suggest that Tristan was a goner and any efforts to locate his kidnappers and rescue him would be futile and energy wasted would be in vain. "Also, Energy needs to be created from something, according to Muggle Laws of Physics, nothing can conjured from nothing. Same to with Gamp's five laws of transfiguration, there are certain things that can not be created from nothing, even with Magic" John posed. |

"Actually, I believe the muggle laws of physics state that energy cannot be created or destroyed. It only changes from one form to another." She'd taken a muggle studies course a couple years back, she hadn't realized it would end up being so useful. The professor hadn't really known what they were talking about, but the textbook had been written by a muggleborn and they'd seemed to have a decent grasp of it all. Addie glanced to John, eyeing him for a moment before offering a tight smile. If magic and energy couldn't be created, then where had it all come from? !Xabbu would claim another character from folk stories was the source, some people claimed God, a lot of muggles talked about science. Were any of them right? |

Charles had maneuvered his way to the wall next to his desk. He leaned--shoulder first--against the wall and crossed his arms; watching the intellectual exchange between all of the students. He smiled quite gently beneath his subtle wrinkles. Then came the pause. "Every fire dies, leaving only ash and the energy other forces need to recreate themselves. This is entirely applicable to our universe. Everything disperses, but thankfully the whole pot boils if enough heat is applied. Magic is continuously fed into our world, into our universe, and eventually over time this... spreads, so to speak; like in a pool. Where does it come from? Folktales tell stories that cannot necessarily be verified, but from the deposites we have discovered around the earth which continuously feed magical energies onto the planet, the idea of Grandfather Mantis might have some truth to it... Magic energy is fed into the world from somewhere else, another realm. "But this does not explain our physical universe... Where did we come from? Were we created or are we in a constant state of birth and rebirth? If magic comes from another realm, does that mean we have an energy that is only present in our universe? The elements, for instance..." |

Kemp rose out of his seat. "I've heard enough," said Kemp, sternly. Back straight, eyes fierce, Kemp approached Tortal and whispered with a low, harsh growl as he passed the professor: "You're about to cross a line, Charles, and I believe you are aware of it." He glanced all around the room as he spoke aloud: "I fail to see how any of this pertains to magical learning," he said, "Further, I fail to see why you entertain such wild posturing and..." Kemp glared at !Xabbu when he spoke, "...superstitions" he turned back to Tortal before continuing on with "in your classroom. What do you have to say in defense of this, Professor Tortal?" "Actually, I believe the muggle laws of physics state that energy cannot be created or destroyed. It only changes from one form to another." Addie corrected John. "That was what I meant" John admitted sheepishly. "As in, new energy doesn't just appear. It needs to come from somewhere else. I believe that some muggle physicists claim that the universe was formed because of the Big Bang Theory" John said. "The universe began expanding due to heat, then earth began to cool so matter was created and life grew from the cooling temperatures" John said, as a very hashed way of trying to explain to the rest of his class the Big Bang Theory, to the best of his understanding and in words that would be understood by the people in the class. Addie ignored John, she assumed most of the class did as well. Her attention was focused specifically on the tense situation between Kemp and Tortal at the front of the class. What Tortal was saying made sense. Thinking outside the box, coming up with theories and concepts for things... It was a brilliant idea. Tortal valued intelligence, not the dull recitation of facts. Kemp, on the other hand only seemed to care about the blind following of orders. That wizards should only understand how to wave a wand around with no notion of why they're able to. She clenched her fists, body tensing, hatred of Kemp beginning to boil over. He was going to get Tortal in trouble. He was determined to get rid of any useful professors they had. |

Dave opened his mouth widely and yawned without restraint as the conversation between Professor Tortal and the class took a turn to muggle physics. Although the ideas being presented were valid and interesting, Dave felt that debating and discussing such things only gave people a certain sense of unwarranted self-importance and was not conducive to learning. The conversation took an interesting turn, however. Dave leaned back in his chair with slightly raised eyebrows as Abraxas Kemp interrupted the discussion, said something under his breath to Professor Tortal, and basically said exactly what Dave had been thinking. It seemed, however, that Dave didn't feel as strongly about it as Kemp did. Although the aurors had been present at Hogwarts for many months, intruding on class instruction and berating professors in front of their students was previously uncharted territory for Kemp and his goons. This wouldn't be the first time, however, that auror and professor had openly disagreed, as Dave remembered when Professor Sneckenberg had escaped arrest after having several hostile exchanges with the enforcers. "Bitch needed to retire anyway," Dave thought to himself with amusement. He laughed at the idea internally, but his external features remained unchanged, as he was eagerly awaiting Kemp's response to Professor Tortal's counterpoint. |

Turning briefly, Beth sent Ian a poignant scowl. Who did he think he was? The girl almost ended up reminding him he wasn't always right but decided it wasn't worth getting in trouble for disturbing the lesson. Sometimes she forgot not every Slytherin was like Dave, Jess or Edward. The discussion flowed and although Beth had some trouble deciphering what !Xabbu meant, Addie's translation came just in time. The topic was becoming increasingly interesting, albeit not something she had expected to hear in a presence of the Head of MLE. At the start of the class, Beth had been almost certain they wouldn't be able to approach the more unconventional topics. Well, those Kemp seemed to consider as such. At his stern interruption, Beth nearly jumped in her chair. She wanted to at least utter an argument but her lips refused to part. Professor Tortal did come back with a valid rationalization, but Beth couldn't help but worry Kemp might not find it satisfactory. Hopefully, she was wrong. Once again, the Hufflepuff turned around, her questioning gaze drifting between Addie and Dave this time. 'Should we do something?' Was there even anything they could say? |

The door to the magical concepts class opened slowly, and Valdemar Hallestrøm entered, flanked by another of Kemp's enforcers. Valdemar was dressed in his usual garb, electing to wear a plain black muggle business suit, which seemed awfully uncharacteristic of a ministry hitwizard. Along with his perfectly combed hair and dark glasses, the look certainly succeeded in giving him an intimidating profile, even in the presence of Kemp and Professor Tortal. Valdemar's black dress shoes clopped against the stone floor as he stepped into the room, his footsteps in perfect sync with his counterpart, who was dressed similarly. Without even a look at the class, the two officers simply stood on either side of the door as if guarding the room from intruders. Or perhaps they were there to keep someone from getting out. |

Kemp stared as if to burn Tortal with his incredulous gaze. "And yet none of this seems to be on the curriculum," said Kemp, "Is this class even on a ministry-approved curriculum? I don't remember seeing one. In fact, Belleford had revived this outdated extra-curricular as a required class only six years ago, am I correct? Another one of her...questionable decisions." Just then, Valdemar arrived. Kemp stiffened. "Hallestrøm," said Kemp shortly. Techically, Valdemar wasn't under Kemp's command--at least, not under his original contract. He wasn't an auror. Under the M.L.E.'s charter, of course, all remaining Ministry employees were supposed to merge with the Department of Magical Law Enforcement and submit to Kemp's leadership. Valdemar, however, answered directly to the Minister of Magic, when there was such a person. He sometimes questioned whether or not Valdemar was truly loyal to him. For those reasons, the Ministry's secret "Black Hand" made Kemp nervous. |

Addie caught Beth's gaze, a small flicker of camaraderie blossoming in her chest. The Hufflepuff seemed to feel the same as she did about this whole situation. That was excellent news. Addie was far gone from the girl who had once followed the rules of those in authority without question. She was a Gryffindor, more than she'd been when she was sorted into the house. She would stand up for her beliefs and those of others, and she would do it with no worries in regards to who she was speaking to. The entrance of more MLE personnel reinforced her resolve. What would they do to a student who openly disagreed with them? Just how far-gone was Kemp and his men? "First of all, I think it's rather rude of you professor Kemp to openly patronize the beliefs of a student. Seems rather out of line." She commented, pushing away from the desk and getting to her feet, referring to the man's comment about !Xabbu. "I also think that the students in this class should be given some sort of say in the matter. I believe that this is an excellent course, the only course that really teaches its students to think, which I believe is a highly valuable skill. In fact, it caters to anyone interested in becoming an Unspeakable." The girl paused, steadying her gaze on the Head of Magical Law Enforcement. "Why are you so afraid of people gaining understanding, rather than blindly following orders? Is it because they might realize the orders they've been following are skewed?" Ian had just opened his mouth to say something, but shut it. Addie had spoken. Sure, Ian couldn't dig himself a deeper hole than the one he was already in with Kemp, but Addie could be in for a lot of pain if she wasn't already. Ian was stunned that she spoke. He watched Kemp closely. He saw the man had been antagonized by Addie. Ian's instincts, as taught by his step-father, Anton, were to find his wand in his pocket and keep a hold on it, ready to fight if Kemp might attack. That outcome seemed unlikely to Ian's rational mind, but instincts weren't always rational. |

Dave returned Beth's gaze with an equally helpless look; there was simply nothing they could do. Instead, Dave remained glued to his seat in preparation for what would come next. Without warning, the classroom door swung open and two of Kemp's most intimidating enforcers entered the room. "What the fuck is going on?" Dave thought as his eyes darted between Professor Tortal, Kemp, and the two enforcement officers. And as if the situation wasn't tense enough, none other than Addie Lumineux stood up and addressed Kemp. "What are you doing?" Dave barked at Addie under his breath, but his question fell on deaf ears as Addie burst into a rant. Dave's mouth hung open as she openly opposed Kemp and admonished him for what he had said of Professor Tortal's teaching. |
