Read Today's Daily Prophet: Knights of Walpurgis attack Hogwarts; Belleford steps down as Hogwarts closes until further notice
Welcome to Hogwarts Interactive Role Play, one of the net's best in Harry Potter and Hogwarts role plays. We hope you enjoy your visit.

Here at Hogwarts our students are currently in their Seventh Year. Last year, the war against the Knights crescendoed into a direct attack against the school. Disappearances are still reported (or not) daily, and the Dark Lord and his Knights of Walpurgis have succeeded in spreading their message of "do as thou will" far and wide across the globe. Magical Law Enforcement, which is now the only authority in the wizarding world under Martial Law, has responded by tightening security, controlling the media, and strictly enforcing curfews and other laws. Their control is damaging to the people's freedom, and their hierarchy is a suspicious lot. It is clear that some members of the MLE like their new found power a bit too much, others see it necessary, but all are in serious danger of being consumed by it. But with the picture of just what Azariah Amaranth is after becoming ever clearer, and a third player in the form of a group called SAVIOR entering the scene, what will the MLE do next to ensure that they've got the situation under control?

The Elementium, the Higher Plane that had once been hidden just beyond the veil in the Department of Mysteries, and the Deathly Hallows. The pieces of the puzzle have been identified, but what picture do they make?

Today is Day 1 of Year Seven. Students have had time to recover from the Knight's attack, and are beginning to reluctantly return to the walls of Hogwarts. The safety of the school has been diminished, bringing up the question everyone must ask. Are you safe anywhere these days? It's up to each individual to decide their fate, where will you decide to go?

Ian de Pointe du Lac; Slytherin
Topic Started: May 5 2011, 07:40:06 PM (276 Views)
Ian de Pointe du Lac
Member Avatar
Seventh Year

Student
Full name: Ian de Pointe du Lac

Nickname(s): Does his brother calling him a "filthy half-blood" count?

Birthdate: November 9th.

Age: 17

Year: 6th
Blood: Not known. Assumed pure blood. His mother, stepfather, and stepbrother are all purebloods. His mother was a Black. His father was muggleborn. He has no relation to his stepfather or his kin, other than perhaps very distantly (those pure blood lines do tend to intersect each-other...)

Wand: 13 inches. Oak. Dragon Heartstring.

Preferred House: While he is very self-conscious, he is not without pride (one might say that self-consciousness is another form of egomania). While he possesses no real ineptitude for anything just yet, he is quick to boast and flaunt wherever he feels he can. He is also very cunning in that though he may not be particularly advanced in any one subject, he can use the spells he does know in tricky ways. He's also very cunning linguist and can twist the things people say back on to them. Slytherin is right for his kind of attitude. Also, his entire family (except for his unknown father) was in Slytherin.

Appearance:
Height: 5'9

Eyes: Dark brown, wide, heavy-lidded, and piercing. They seem to display every part of his emotion while at the same time giving the impression that he is taking in every part of yours.

Hair: So brown its on the very verge of being true black.

Physical Description:
Ian, much to his dismay, sticks out like a sore thumb amongst his family members. All of the Pointe du Lacs have glowing, light features and high cheekbones and platinum-blond hair. Ian, on the other hand--for all his dark features--had spent his early childhood thinking he had been burnt when he was made. That was, of course, before he found out that Anton de Pointe du Lac was not his father.

His dark eyes, dark skin, and brown hair must have then come from his father, he supposed. He knew his thin lips, oval face, and heavy-lidded eyes had come from his mother, though.

He's begun to grow into himself somewhat, and he's not as pimply as he once was. He's shaping up quite well, and his ears don't seem quite as big. He's actually quite handsome now in an "old world" sort of way.

He's considerably less scrawny than he was, and he's not as closed off either. In fact, he keeps an almost constant air of smugness and egotism, that it's obvious he is covering for insecurities.

One would find Ian wearing his usual wry smile, and his posture is both perfect and somehow it appears as though his impeccable form his mockery of others of its own.

Ian's family affords the finest wizard clothing money can buy. Though he has a number of muggle clothing (usually just plain T-shirts and jeans) his wardrobe consists of robes and cloaks made out of expensive silks and other fabrics. He was taught to dress as such by his mother, who believed they should both flaunt their status because they could, and because she had never had much growing up, so she wanted to show it off now that she had it. Ian was forced to play along. Now he simply dresses that way, not out of any particular preference, but out of habit.

Personality:
Don't let Ian's closed-off stance fool you. He can be immensely prideful when given the slightest opportunity. Often times, it seems as though he opens his mouth only to tell someone off (he does have a sense of justice, though he tends to be too self-conscious to jump into a row like a Gryffindor would)--and even then he gets very pompous while defending others--or otherwise just to flaunt his "sophisticated" vocabulary.

He is blunt and serious to a fault. It can be quite unnerving to have this kid not talk for long stretches, only to have him tell you exactly what he thinks at a moments notice. He can be nice to you and help you out when he believes that he must, still not care when you get chewed out by the potions master for your shoddy work.

His practicality tends to rub people the wrong way often times, but he has an alturistic side that his time in Slytherin nearly, but not quite, destroyed; and though his mother always treated him like something of a burden, he has experienced love in his life through others. He's smart enough to know where to find it, even if he doesn't really give any back (too self-conscious). He has a heart and a sense of justice, but it is often compromised.

Ian is most open and comfortable when he's joking and being a sarcastic, self-inflated git. It is yet one of the many masks he hides behind.

The young Slytherin has shown a knack for observation that is superior to most of his fellow Slytherin. He's often at odds with himself, torn between the group to which he belongs, and all the privileges that brings, and the world he sees. He has always given off the air of a prefect pure blood, even as many of the aspects of the world he inhabits disturbs him, and even as he begins to note the fragile nature of the preferred social reality inhabited by his friends.

At the heart of Ian's personality are crippling social issues that bar his ability from connecting with others on a real level. He is prone to self-destructive behavior, erratic thoughts and actions, and frequent episodes of anxiety, depression, and dangerously low self-esteem. He does not easily trust, and expects betrayal behind every corner.

History:
Ian was conceived in a bathroom stall. Or at least, that's what his step-aunt and step-uncle say. In truth, he doesn't know how his father had come to impregnate his mother at the age of sixteen (how they met, not how the act of conception works, Ian had already received that very awkward talk from his step-uncle). Auntie Claudia and Uncle Leon had said that Ian's mother was the kind of woman who would jump in the bed with any man and that her biggest turn-on word was "Hi". His Uncle Leon had also used a certain four-letter word that made his Auntie Claudia scowl at him.

It was true, however, that Ian's step-father's brother and his wife were not too fond of Ian's mother, and they never approved of their marriage. But they loved Ian all the same.

So, even though Ian was treated by his mother to be the worst thing that could have ever happened to her (or usually just with a sort of indifference that she seemed to put on in order to keep her from seeming as though she felt that way--as though she really tried to love him), Ian never went without care and attention. And his step-father's house was big enough that he could spend as much time avoiding his mother as they both wanted. Ian resented his mother as much as she did he. Overall, Ian lived a privileged life with love and happiness--and a few key things missing.

Speaking of people to avoid, the only person in the house to ever show Ian outright contempt was his older step brother Alphonse. Though the rest of his pure-blood family had been trying for years to throw off the yoke of prejudice the family held for muggles and half-bloods, Alphonse's Slytherin buddies at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry had turned him to total pure-blood mania. He HATED Ian. He believed that Ian didn't deserve to learn magic, or that he should go to Hogwarts, or that he should even exist at all.

It was from Alphonse that Ian first learned why he was so very different from his father and mother, and from Alphonse himself. He was nine when he heard the story of the Twin Dragons:

"Long ago, in medieval times, there lived a great wizarding family in the heart of France. They were both wizards and great noble lords, and they treated their muggle serfs with with more dignity and respect than most feudal lords of their time.

"But muggles have always feared what the cannot comprehend, and so, they soon turned upon their masters..."

But of course, Ian knew, the muggles could not harm any wizard. He had learned that from his History of Magic class--well, the part he was conscious for, anyway.

"Even though they had nothing to fear from the muggles, the youngest brother lashed out angrily at the foolish muggles. He slew a few of them with a wand made of Oak and Dragon Heartstring adorned with a golden eastern-style dragon wrapped around the length of the dark shaft.

"The eldest brother detested his actions, and sought to end his brother's cruel ways. They raised their wands, and had begun to duel, but the eldest brother also had a wand identical to his younger sibling. The same cores of these two wands both had been given by the same dragon. The two could not harm each other.

"In the end, the eldest brother conceded to his brother. Dropping his wand and allowing himself to be killed. No one has ever been able to figure out why the older brother had given up and allowed himself to be killed."

"He was probably weak," Alfonse had said, smirking, "He had realized that his brother was right and that a firm hand would be needed to keep those of lesser power in their place." He forcefully lay his hand upon Ian's shoulder, using way too much pressure.

Of course, the legend had to be somewhat true; after all, the Twin Dragon wands were have been passed down through the generations of the Pointe du Lac family--to the two eldest siblings they always went.

Then came the question Ivan had been dying to ask: "How come you've got one of the Dragon Wands, and I don't? We're both the two eldest siblings in the family."

Alfonse smirked. "It's because..." he said, with his hand still maintaining a tight grip on his brother's shoulder, "you aren't a proper son."

Ian would find out later what he meant. So Anton was not his father. The relationship between the two of them became strained after that (with his father, mind. Ian's relationship with Alphonse had never been anything but contemptuous). Or perhaps, Ian supposed, it always sort-of was. Anton had tried to treat Ian like a proper son, tried, perhaps a bit more successfully that his mother, to love him. It didn't help that, when Ian got older, he began to lash out a bit, using the fact that Anton was not his real father as an excuse not to listen to him. This caused Anton more grief than Ian would have ever cared to realize, then.

Ian had begun to show signs of magic at about the age of seven. Alphonse, of course, had been able to cause books to fall off shelves when he threw a tantrum since he was three.

"Oh well, I guess that's how it goes," his brother had said once, grinning that same maniacal grin, "half the blood, half the talent". His father was none to happy with him. Ian was, however, happy that Anton had sent Alphonse to bed with no supper for that smarmy remark.

Around August one year, four months before he would turn 12, a letter arrived to him by post owl. And you know where this is going.

Alphonse was angry. He didn't think his half-blood brother should be allowed to go to Hogwarts. It seemed as though his hatred of Ian went deeper than just pure-blood mania.

First Through 3rd Year
The House of Salazar Slytherin is not a kind place to those of dirty blood. Ian knew this, and has donned the mask of a pureblood in order to fit in and feel safe. He's confident that he's managed be convincing enough for most. His cousin--and now friend--Bellatrix Black doesn't seem to even question it. And if the Black side of his family says so, than theres a good chance most will believe he is who he claims to be...he hopes.

Over the summer before 3rd year, Ian acquired a Hand of Glory, favorite of thieves and plunderers, from his brother. He was keepin it safe for him, but it dissapeared and Ian found it later in his luggage once at school again, having no idea how it got there.

He's also becoming increasingly interested in the Dark Arts, learning it wherever he can.

Ian fell in love with the half-blood Lola Dior, going against everything he's been taught, and everything he has pretended to be. He found somehow it simply made sense, once he saw a chance at happiness, to go on.

In third year, Ian became aware of his power over water. He has since practiced it and became quite adept at moving it and making it take any shape he wants. Ian's uncle had mysteriously passed away that year, handing down his wand, of oak and dragon heartstring to him, though the laws of the family should have prevented him from doing so. Anton puts him through a number of other strict training regiments, common procedure for a young boy in a family with a military tradition like the Pointe du Lacs.

It was in that year that Ian had completed his horrific initiation into Julian Kahn's inner circle. His plan to maim Fera Collis took them to the Forbidden Forest. Ian had never planned on Fera being too hurt, his curse was far too weak for that; however, they were in the wrong place at the wrong time, for the army of red caps (blood thirsty, dwarf-like creatures that had been massing in the forest, inexplicably, for over a year) tore through the forest. Though it as the Red Caps who really maimed the girl for life, Ian was still guilty by way of putting her in that situation. In the ensuing attack, Ian's beloved house elf, Blinkin, was also murdered as he tried to secure a path for his master to escape.

Wrought with grief and regret, Ian nearly accepted his fate. But then, Ian was spoken to. A apparition appeared before him, and she claimed to be an ancestor of his. It was she that lead him out of the woods, and, out of the woods, Ian emerged on a new path.

Year Four
In fourth year, Ian was afflicted with violent seizures. During which, he would be visited by either Aunt Julia, or spoken to by a mysterious being claiming to have come from "beyond the veil" but Ian had no idea what that meant. He informed Headmistress Bidelia Belleford, who seemed to believe him, much to his surprise. If Belleford could glean anything from what he'd told her, she did not tell him.

That year, Alphonse kidnaps Constanta Lupei, a werewolf and Ian's girlfriend, on the night of the full moon to lure him out. Alphonse explained that Ian was very important to the Dark Lord. A fight ensued, and when Ian was sure he was going to die, his and Alphonse's twin wands clashed, and Alphonse's wand began spewing out "echoes" of those he'd killed. One of whom was Ian's uncle, Leon. Alphonse had killed his own uncle for the wand Ian now possessed. Another echo belonged to that of a woman who looked strangely like his friend and longtime crush, Tinsley Carmichael. When Tinsley herself screamed towards the echo of her mother, Ian learned that Alphonse had killed Cora Carmichael.

When the centaurs had shown up, Ian was sure Alphonse was dead, for they had pierced him with a barrage of arrows. As Alphonse lay bleeding, however, Ian felt a searing pain in his chest, the flesh having actually split open, as something heavy, powerful, and invisible had hit him there. Then, he blacked out. He awoke with a scar on his chest in the shape of thin lines crisscrossing in a pattern--like a spider web. The scar occasionally stings, and sometimes it burns.

Ian's mind was touched by another consciousness in the hospital wing, after his duel with Alphonse. It was through this voice that Ian was told of his impending death, and of his future, for the consciousness that touched Ian's mind claimed to exist on a higher plane where time was simultaneous, and that all that has happened, is happening, and will ever happen already exists, and will always be. What has been said will come to pass, because it always has, and it always will. Ian will make the right choices, in the end, because he always has, and he always will.

He will die, because he always has...and he always will.

Fifth Year
At the disaster at the Quidditch World Cup, summer before fifth year, the scar had throbbed so painfully it felt as though it was likely to split open again. It was then that Ian witnessed, seeing it through the killer's eyes, the murder of Anton de Pointe du Lac, his stepfather, by none other than Alphonse--Anton's only true son. Since then, Ian has had many more glimpses into Alphonse's thoughts and doings. Some kind of connection was forged that day.

Though unable to return home due to Alphonse having inherited the entire estate, Ian spent his holidays with Tinsley at her grandparents' cabin in the mountains. There, with Tinsley's family, Ian experienced aspects of family life that he'd never had before. Living with Tinsley's numerous brothers, and bunking with a few of them, he experienced what a (mostly) healthy relationship with sibling is like, and, after a week or so, he was just one of the guys. Tinsley's grandparents were so nice, and the environment was so relaxed (save for when one of her brothers--or occasionally Ian--would manage to piss Tinsley off somehow) that Ian might not have realized that Cora Charmichael had lived here. He'd asked Tinsley's grandmother about her (something Tinsley herself knows nothing about) and from what he could tell, Tinsley and Cora were nearly identical both physically and in their personality.

Though they had started to grow quite close during the time Ian spent at the cabin, Tinsley's mere presence was beginning to unnerve Ian. Part of it was her connection to the woman that had appeared from Alphonse's wand. Cora's echo had laughed that night, a cruel, vindictive laughter that sent chills down Ian's spine. Her words were clear that night: Ian was to be the instrument of retribution against Alphonse. A notion reinforced in Ian's mind by the "One From Beyond the Veil"'s revelation that Ian would soon die, as well as Ian's own thirst for revenge against the man who slew Anton.

And, still, there was Ian's crush on her, which he'd abandoned as hopeless sometime around third year, but now, with him spending increasing amounts of time with her, the crush has evolved into full-on unrequited love. Of course, Tins is with Julian, and they are the Hogwarts "power-couple". And Ian would not think to cross Julian Kahn, who had allowed Ian to join his circle.

The price for Ian's admittance into Julian's group was the mutilation of a fellow student. Thanks to Ian's clever use of the Polyjuice potion, Fera Collis will never know just who was responsible for her permanent disfigurement. Ian had not meant to cause any lasting damage; just enough to appease Julian Kahn, for Ian had really wanted to get in with the right people (Tinsley's presence in this circle might have affected his decision-making as well). But the spell Ian used was too powerful, and he'd used it in desperation as Red Caps swarmed the forbidden forest where he'd lured Fera. The Red Caps, sensing blood, dove on her and began consuming her flesh while she was still alive. They were responsible for most of the damage, but Ian, now older and with a functioning conscience, can never shake the deep-seated guilt from his mind.

Too much weighs heavily on this boy's mind for him to be a properly functioning person. He has become increasingly awkward in dealing with people, and he is often lost in thought, in his head, and without much consideration for people around him as he stews in his own problems and misery.

When Ian confronts Alphonse for the second time, during the final round of the Triwizard Tournament, he is determined to end it. However, Alphonse is determined as well, and it is revealed that Ian and his auror guard were lured into a trap in the Shrieking Shack by Alphonse (using their connection to implant false visions of Ian's friends being tortured). Alphonse beat every auror single handed, murdering a few.

When Ian finally rose to challenge him, his body glowed red. Alphonse did not seem taken aback by this development at all, and, immediately, he summoned his own violet aura. Ian was unprepared for the mental attack that followed. It felt as though his scar was splitting. However, when it was all said and done, however, Ian had thrown Alphonse from his mind on his own.

Alphonse was then defeated by some quick thinking on the part of Mad-Eye and the aurors, but not before using his connection to Ian once again to force his way into the boy's mind...

In the realm of Ian's subconscious, the troubled boy was treated with visions, conjured by Alphonse directly from the darkest, deepest fears and regrets Ian had hidden in the dark depths of his mind.

The most prominent image was that of a wall which sealed his truest, innermost self from the world.

Ian had been ready to give in when, somehow, Julia had brought Tinsley's consciousness in contact with Ian's, and Tinsley alone was able to aid Ian in confronting his own demons. In the end, Ian broke free from his "wall."

Alphonse's unsettling laughter kept this from seeming like a victory. After Ian used his strange new powers to blast Alphonse from his mind, he and Tinsley returned to the physical plane, a new bond between them forged.

Concering de Pointe du Lac family crest and origins:
The de Pointe du Lac family has preserved their rather oriental style crest (A jade and sliver eastern-style dragon) in light of the family's past business. For they were one of the only French people that traded with Oriental apothecaries and craftsmen for both muggle and magical items from the orient and the near the end of the Medieval age--just before and long after the Medieval society crumbled and in the wake of the Enlightenment--a business dominated mostly by the Italians. It is also believed this is where the Twin Dragon Wands--which have been in the family for years--had come from. It is believed that the de Pointe du Lac family were presented with the fine crest, crafted from gold, silver, emeralds and rubies, by oriental artisans as a symbol of friendship and good business; and that a group of oriental wandmakers had presented them with beautifully crafted wands of oak, each embroidered with a golden serpent wrapped around the wand, and a dragon heartsring inside both of them--having come from the same dragon.

Family:
Mother: Angeline Ivory Black-de Pointe du Lac
Age: 32
Hair: Blond
Eyes: Green
Angeline had been sixteen when Ian was born. Just a child herself, she was confused and too immature to take care of a child on her own. She married thirty-three year old Anton Bonparte de Pointe du Lac at the age of seventeen. Ian was barely three months old.

Her side of the Black family had little money despite being one of the most prominent wizarding families in the world. She had been kicked out of her home and she had been forced to drop out of Hogwarts when she found out she was pregnant. Her youth and immaturity constituted for most of her problems with Ian. She was simply too young to have a child. But out of that immaturity was born a resentment that she felt was caused by Ian: HE made her quit school, HE made her give up her dreams. Even still, she tried her best to love him, and succeeded a lot of the time. But that old immaturity still peaked through at the worst of times.

Father: ???
Age: ???
Hair: ???
Eyes: ???
Ian's deadbeat dad. Nobody knows where he is. Even Ian has yet to show an interest in his true father's whereabouts.

Stepfather: Anton Bonparte de Pointe du Lac
Age: Deceased
Hair: Blond
Eyes: Blue
Anton had once been an Auror. He has since retired and has taken up a job as a school governor at Hogwarts. A pure-blood and a Slythering alumni, he's had his share of pure-blood mania. But, in an effort to improve himself, he shakes off this prejudice early in adulthood, but old habits die hard.

Stricken by the death of his first wife, he sought companionship with Angeline. She provided warm company for a while, but she was still a child and wanting nothing more than to run away from the adult life she so abruptly entered. That, and her son needed his help. He realized that she was too young and immature to take care of him properly. So, he began to raise Ian as his own.

Anton's grandfather moved to Britain when he realized that the pure-blood line in France was dwindling. He meant for his son's and daughters to marry English pure-bloods.

Anton returned later to Magical Law Enforcement, where he was quickly promoted to Head of the Department. He was murdered by Alphonse, his own son, during the events at the Quidditch World Cup in the summer of 2011. Only now is Ian finding out of about the puzzling arrangements Anton had made post-death, many of which now seem to be having a hand in deciding Ian's fate.

Stepbrother: Alphonse Charles de Pointe du Lac
Unlike his father, Alphonse has made no effort to throw off his pure-blood mania. Entrapped by the dream of a pure world conjured up by his Slytherin friends, he would like nothing more than to see the end of all muggles, muggleborn wizards and half-bloods--yes, even his own step-brother.

But resentment had existed between the two since before that. Could his hatred of Ian be more deep-rooted than simple prejudice?

Regardless, Alphonse carries with him one of the two Twin Dragon Wands. The other, is reserved for a true younger de Ponte du Lac sibling.

Despite his earlier displays elitism, Alphonse has apparently been working with Azariah Amaranth as one of his most trusted Knights of Walpurgis in the Dark Lord's plan to overthrow the government and usher in an age of anarchy. What could have caused such a dramatic change of heart?

Alphonse is married to Belladonna (Quagmire) de Pointe du Lac. Together, they are Azariah's most trusted Knights.

Though it appeared as though he'd died, Alphonse remains alive and active nearly a year after he was "killed" by a volley of centaur arrows right in front of Ian and his friends. Reasons for his startling recovery are nonexistent, but ever since then, Ian has been able to glimpse Alphonse's thoughts and actions as if through the eyes of his step-brother, as such had happened when Ian witnessed firsthand the lengths Alphonse was willing to go for the Knights' cause: The knight of the 2011 Quidditch World Cup, Alphonse slew his own father, Anton.

Step-Aunt and Step Uncle: Claudia Marie Antoine-de Pointe du Lac and Charles Leon de Pointe du Lac
Ian's beloved Auntie and Uncle. Though not his blood relatives, they practically raised him. His stepfather had always been busy, and his mother always so childish, so they taught him right from wrong (and even how to ride a racing broom).

They never approved of Angeline or of Anton's marriage to her. But they did their best to help out anyhow.

They, too, have strode to throw off the prejudice ways of their kin.

Both died mysteriously in the spring of 2010.

Pet(s): A beautiful midnight-black owl. He's a little old (a hand-me-down from Alphonse, he gets tired of his pets after a while), but still strong. He delivers letters to and from his home. Ian goes to the owelry at least four times a week to visit with him.

Possessions:
*a Nimbus 2001 broom.
*The Hand of Glory. Gives light only to the holder.

Thanks Beth!

I heard the sound of a thunder, it roared out a warnin'
I heard the roar of a wave that could drown the whole world
I heard one hundred drummers whose hands were a-blazin'
I heard ten thousand whisperin' and nobody listenin'
I heard one person starve, I heard many people laughin'
Heard the song of a poet who died in the gutter
Heard the sound of a clown who cried in the alley
And it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard
And it's a hard rain's a-gonna fall.
