Welcome to Hogwarts Interactive Role Play, one of the net's best in Harry Potter and Hogwarts role plays. We hope you enjoy your visit.

Here at Hogwarts our students are currently in their Seventh Year. Last year, the war against the Knights crescendoed into a direct attack against the school. Disappearances are still reported (or not) daily, and the Dark Lord and his Knights of Walpurgis have succeeded in spreading their message of "do as thou will" far and wide across the globe. Magical Law Enforcement, which is now the only authority in the wizarding world under Martial Law, has responded by tightening security, controlling the media, and strictly enforcing curfews and other laws. Their control is damaging to the people's freedom, and their hierarchy is a suspicious lot. It is clear that some members of the MLE like their new found power a bit too much, others see it necessary, but all are in serious danger of being consumed by it. But with the picture of just what Azariah Amaranth is after becoming ever clearer, and a third player in the form of a group called SAVIOR entering the scene, what will the MLE do next to ensure that they've got the situation under control?

The Elementium, the Higher Plane that had once been hidden just beyond the veil in the Department of Mysteries, and the Deathly Hallows. The pieces of the puzzle have been identified, but what picture do they make?

Today is Day 1 of Year Seven. Students have had time to recover from the Knight's attack, and are beginning to reluctantly return to the walls of Hogwarts. The safety of the school has been diminished, bringing up the question everyone must ask. Are you safe anywhere these days? It's up to each individual to decide their fate, where will you decide to go?

Charles sat at his desk; repeating an action he had been doing for most of the day. A faint scent of extinguished cigar loomed within the continually reshaping room. The chairs and desks sat upon platforms which ground against other platforms--making a soft, almost relaxing, rumbling sound--as they rose and spun; creating different shapes.

Upon drawing close to a specific platform, depending on its location, it was programmed to reshape into a staircase. The ceiling had been pushed much higher to allot the rising platforms. Once a person took residence on a platform, it was programmed to rise (or fall) to disallow any individual to see another person's paper.

Today we're going to be taking mock exams. Unlike your other teachers who will be grading you based on what fact you can regurgitate, I'm going to be grading you based on your ability to theorize.

For now, based off what theories I've shared with you over the past couple of years, make up your own theory about the world we live in, so long as it's somewhat believable.

Note: if you enter an infinite progression of an explanation followed by a repetition of an explanation to explain the explanation--IE: the earth is held up by a turtle that's held up by another turtle that's held up by another turtle and so on and so forth--or something similar, your theory will automatically be discarded as illogical.

Emma walked into the classroom, and immediately cursed under her breath.

First of all, Emma was going to puke on her paper. Think she could perform a quick anti-motion sickness charm? She sighed. Just pretend its a broomstick. Pretend it's Quidditch. Oh, if only things were that easy. She inhaled deeply, holding her breath in. It was a calming technique, something she'd learned over time. The longer you deprived your lungs of oxygen, the more they wanted it. Well, needed it. Emma smiled and inhaled sharply, the dizziness fading away as oxygen surged through her veins again. There. She felt alive again. Better.

Em took her seat, and re-read Tortal's instructions for about the fifth time, her stomach lurching and tumbling. Theory? She poked through her mind, trying to find a shred of understanding there amongst the jumbled together mess of memorized facts, potions, elementium...For now, based off what theories I've shared with you over the past couple of years, make up your own theory about the world we live in, so long as it's somewhat believable.

Note: if you enter an infinite progression of an explanation followed by a repetition of an explanation to explain the explanation--IE: the earth is held up by a turtle that's held up by another turtle that's held up by another turtle and so on and so forth--or something similar, your theory will automatically be discarded as illogical.

What do turtles have to do with anything? was how Emma began her theory. She continued writing, the gears of her mind working like a well-oiled machine. Which was, really, just what Emma was.

Melanie entered the Magical Theory classroom. No one was in there, except herself, Professor Tortal, and Emma Gray, whom she had no particular desire to talk to.

She smiled and waved at the professor in a friendly manner, as she always did while entering class. "Good morning, Professor," she chirped. She'd left her last class before Trina had the time to catch up, so she decided to just sit down and save a seat for her best friend.

Laney read the board and chuckled to herself a little when her eyes skimmed over the part about the turtles. The assignment looked fairly interesting. The professor was right: all the other teachers simply tested your memory. Professor Tortal was actually trying to make his students think about what they were writing. This was one of Melanie's favorite classes for that reason.

Hmm... A theory of the world was a very general topic. Since it was magical theory class, after all, she assumed that it would have something to do with magic.

Without further ado, she pulled out her writing materials and began to theorize.

Posted Image

Melanie pursed her lips as she read over what she'd written. It all sounded slightly confusing, like it had risen to the top of her head and she'd spilled it out onto the paper, all from nowhere.

Like magic.

As she read it, she decided that if she turned this in as an exam, it might earn an A, or maybe an E. Was this good enough to allow her to continue on with the NEWT level of Magical Concepts? She tapped her quill against her face, the feathers tickling her nose. Hmm...

Anca slipped into the classroom, a strand of hair falling over her shoulder as she realized that once again, she was earlier than most other students.

Magical Theory had never been her best subject, but it wasn't her worst either. She actually wasn't all that terrible at it, like some of her classmates kept complaining about, but there were some things that confused her about the class. She murmured a quick, "Good morning, Professor," and proceeded to take her seat. She nonchalantly read the board and bit her lower lip, realizing that there were a variety of things to write about, but she was positive that very few of the things that came to mind would be accepted by the Professor.

Magical theories, the world we live in... turtles, her mind was racing with ideas, none of which seemed to be sufficient enough to pass her own level of acceptance, as she quickly fished a quill out of her book bag.

Something about Magical Theory gave Jenny hives. It was a dark anxiety, crawling up her spine, something she couldn't quite shake. It was a fear she kept piling things on top of, a mess hiding beneath some sort of facade. It was this fear of Professor Tortal that made Jenny enter the classroom like a bubbling ray of sunshine, breathing irregularly fast with a stamped-on smile twisting her face into a mask.

Jenny was smart, but doubt crept into her mind. Shadows, just like everything else, eclipsing everything. A theory? How could Jenny ever manage it? She wasn't the smart one, she was never the smart sister--no, that was best left to June, and.. well, never mind that now. Jenny took a seat beside Anca and smiled nervously.

"Turtles, huh?" she whispered, just before her desk rose into the air so she couldn't see Anca's paper.

Jenny's cheeks flushed red as she wobbled in the air. Talk about mortifying. As it fell again, Jenny didn't dare look at Anca as she withdrew her own bit of parchment and bit on the end of her quill, trying to decide what to write.

Nothing. She had nothing.

As usual.

Kiki, was stuck, doodling stars and smiley faces into her blank parchment. She didn't need this class to be included among her NEWT classes, and she had nearly no-idea of what her theory on the world was.

Sure, she'd seen plenty of how the world worked. Kiki wasn't sure if her outlook would be as positive as she was supposed to say.

"You see, the Wizarding Community, without the interference of my men or myself, have now decided to play by our rules when the ministry is no longer in control. You are right that the world cannot survive without a government, but the fundamental rights of being human are sacrificed in exchange."

Frowning as Amaranth's words came to her memory, Katriane shut her eyes. As much as she hated to admit it, the current Dark Lord has shaped her theory irrevocably.

Flashback

Kiki had run away from the sight of Addie grieving, and went over some where and dropped to her knees, to empty the contents her stomach. When she stood, she noticed something white not a few inches from her foot.

It was a lock of hair. A silver lock of hair, and more of it...under debris, along with limbs and hands, and faces. A group of Veela, all wearing the last expression of suprise, had been crushed by the concrete and wood of the stands. A few weren't crushed, their bodies bent at odd angles, face down, face up.

These particular Veela had been murdered. Slaughtered. On the dirty forehead of one, someone had written, a very hateful word, in what Kiki could tell to be blood. They probably were only trying to perform the ceremonial Veelan rites of death for the others before they were attacked.

She trembled, her shaky hand wiping blood off. Katriane closed her eyes, murmuring the prayer of Mother Veela over her, and over the rest of them reverently, until the last one had been ushered into the next life. Once she finished, she began to wail mournfully and didn't stop screaming in anguish until !Xabbu had finally found her.

End Flashback

Azariah's chilling words, her own memories, the assault on her mother--they melded together to form her theory. If she were to write this any year before, it would be drastically different.

Taryn strolled into the classroom feeling very confident in herself. She had managed to break through her shell and actually talk to a few other classmates. She smiled a little and went to sit by Jennifer Brooks. "Hey." She greeted cheerfully. She had met Jennifer a little while ago, and while they didn't exactly know each other to well, perhaps today they would become better acquanted.

Taryn looked at the Professor. He had always scared her, and so she had always tried very hard to do well in his class. When he began to tell them what they should do in this class, all of her confidence faded. How could she just come up with a theory in an hour? She would fail this classes OWLs, if that was the case.
Her hand shook slightly as she held onto the quill and pressed the tip onto a piece of parchment.

Nicole sauntered into the Magical Theory classroom, and took a seat at the back of the room. She took a glance at the board and let out a groan as she finished. Oh great..just what I need..Mock exams." Nicole muttered, pulling out some parchment. As she began, her mind drew blanks. She tapped her quill on her desk. A thought came to mind and she giggled. She laughed to herself as she began writing. After a time which felt like hours, Nicole was finished. Silently she read over her work.

"H-Hi, Taryn," smiled Jenny shyly, looking up from her paper, which she had shielded with her hands. No need for her desk to suddenly have a mind of its own again. Her stomach was churning with acid at the thought. She watched Taryn for a few more moments before shaking her blonde curls out of her face and returning to her paper.

The world we live in.

The world is cold, the world is kind. The world is the face of a cold-hearted, surrogate Ice Queen mother, or a doting, expecting, loving father. The world is etched on our faces, in our eyes that have seen too much heartache to be real. The world is a part of us, and we are a part of the world. We affect it, despite our best defenses. We, Muggles.. all the same.

Jenny wasn't sure what she was trying to say. After rereading it, Jenny's essay seemed more like a plea to her. A plea for Professor Tortal to listen to her, save her from the ice cold grip of her mother and misplaced love of her father. It wasn't the world, it was her world. Hmm...

Yet everyone has a different world. Even so, we are all connected. One thing affects something else. We're all set up to fall, and one tripping movement could create a chain reaction. Wizards and Muggles alike, we are all intertwined, humans and creatures on this planet combined as one. We are dependent on each other, even inadvertently. Wizards depend on wand-makers, wand-makers depend on the trees from which the wood of wands is stolen, trees depend on the sunlight radiating to earth, and the sun depends on a variety of factors which allow it--really, just a burning ball of gas--to prosper.

We are all one, a cohesive unit. If the sun were to die and extinguish itself, imagine the chain which would consequentially fall victim to the freeze left in its wake. You and I--even Azariah Amaranth, picture of misplaced, sadistic power, would fall victim.

My theory on the world, therefore, is simple. We are all connected, by an invisible thread which runs through us all.

Jenny reread her words and bit her lip nervously. It wasn't very good, but it wasn't very bad, either. She guessed it would have to do.

Taryn smiled at Jennifer and began to go through her mind for something a small little something to write about. She reckoned that all the other students had found something very unique to write about and she would never measure up.
Okay....Okay..Ashby, think. It's only a mock exam... there are a million thing to write about.

She sighed and redipped her quill in ink.

Magical Theory-Taryn Ashby

After all of my life experiences, the ups and the downs I have come to the conclusion that everything happens for a reason. It's not just a stupid lie of comfort you tell to your friend who has just been dumped, I really and truly believe everything happens for a reason. If the big bang had not happened then where would we be? Not here.
We are here because something happened that put us here. And if you think about the world, all the events that have happened have led up to this moment exactly. If something had changed even a tiny bit, then what would the world be like?

Taryn set down her quill and read over her paper. It wasn't the best theory, and perhaps it wasn't even a theory at all, but it would have to do.

Rosie entered the Magical Concepts classroom, with her head down for once. There was something in the room, the class, the teacher, perhaps, that made her feel small, sad, scared... She wasn't sure what it was, and she believed it was just the nerves of having this relatively new class. She felt the atmosphere was just... different.

The girl sat down and took her hair off her face, feeling her hot, deep breaths as she lowered her arms to cross them ontop of the paper she had in front of her. She was not a Ravenclaw, but for some reason she was just too nervous about the exam. She never understood the class, nor did she understand what the hell a theory was. She felt so lonely in the world at that moment, even if friendly Hufflepuffs and wise Ravenclaws were all around her, just a couple of inches away from her.

Rose looked down again, admiring the blank piece of parchment that lied on the desk. She slowly closed her eyes, trying to concentrate on the important task she had been given. The world that we live in... Come on, Rose, think.

The world that we live in.

So many things came to her mind from those words, yet the girl was sure nothing of what she was thinking would made any sense at all if written on paper. She put her head down, as if she had fallen asleep. But no, she wasn't dreaming, she just had ti focus.

Almost late. Finn managed to squeeze into the door before the tardy bell finished ringing. He was usually almost late to anything, anymore because of his frequent addiction to early afternoon naps. "Afternoon." He greeted the Professor, as he walked past a few students and chose a seat in the middle of the class. The classroom was completely full of Hufflepuffs and Ravenclaws alike, making it where chattering was a definite possibility.

The assignment would have to wait, Finn realized with glee. He would have to jot down a theory a few minutes before class ended, for he certainly didn't feel like putting his whole class hour into doing it. He pulled out a piece of parchment and his writing utensels and pretended to scribble a few words before looking up and watching the class.

What do turtles have to do with anything?

There is no science nor sense to the world we live in. Days melt into nights and dark skies will eventually clear, the hope beyond the abyss of dread. The earth, spinning out of control, is much like the human mind, constantly going through cycles of light and dark, night and day. But is there a science to the madness? Is evil born, a soul helpless and broken from the start? Or is evil born through time, born of hate, and hurt?

We are all products of our own society. Children are born innocent, blank slates waiting for the world to write upon. We are born free of hate, prejudice, and the magic which shows itself in later years. Infants are quite literally newborns: born, new and clean, pristine and untouched by fate. Evil is not born. Evil is created, and it is everywhere. Evil is in the tempting side-glance of a woman, in the dark shadows of abandoned corridors, in the insanity of a religion based on greed, in the eyes of the forgotten, and in Azariah Amaranth. More importantly, there is evil within us all: it is hiding, buying its time. No one is safe from the ice cold grip of it, its allure the kind that can you suck you in, chew you up, and spit you out. Evil is present, always, the shadows of every corner of every room.

Still, even the night sky has stars. Even these stars hold hope. What is my theory for this world, so consumed by the raging fire of evil? My theory that while there is an astounding amount of evil threatening to down us in its dark sea, there is always hope. The world, constantly turning, will always see daybreak just as the night sky hits its darkest inky black. The world may have created evil with all the tools to destroy it, but the evil which we have created will never be strong enough to take us down. Not when there is hope. Hope is everything.

Emma re-read her mock essay and fretfully bit her bottom lip, scanning for new phrases she could interject and other phrases which just didn't fit. Her insecurity was overwhelming as she felt a bead of sweat run down her forehead. She slapped it away, harder than she intended, but felt no pain. What was really painful was what was in front of her, a mediocre essay on a subject she knew too much about...

Trina walked into the classroom silently and sat next to Melanie and hummed a tune as she collected her quill and parchment from her bag. "Hey, Laney." Trina said with a smile then turned away to listen to Professor Tortal.

Our world... Hm. Well, it's quite easy to see some differences between the Muggle world and ours, seeing as I have experience in both worlds, so I think I'll start there. Trina poised her quill on her piece of parchment. How do I begin? Well, I could say that our world is a world where Muggle theories make sense and find meaning from... But how to explain it? Trina pondered on this as she played with the tip of her quill.

Victoria opened the door to the class and kept her eyes low.

Late... by one minute...

She sighed as she thought about what Professor Tortal would have to say about that and dared a quick glance around the room. The only person she knew in the class was Nicole, a very nice girl she'd met only a few days before.

Thank goodness!

She smiled as she took a seat next to her.

"Hey there." She whispered, giving a small wave.

She kept it short because she was probably already in enough trouble for being late, and her seat would be moving her momentarily disabling any possibility of conversation with someone, or in Tortal's mind--cheating. She set her bags down and began feeling around for her own paper and quill.

"So, what's the assignment?" She asked hurriedly.

Nicole's expression told her she didn't want to know.

As quietly as she could, Aislinn slipped into Professor Tortal's classroom. On seeing the somewhat unconventional seating arrangements she began to have suspicions over what they would be doing, and sure enough, a glance at the board told her that she had been correct. Magical Theory not being one of her preffered subjects, it was with something less than enthusiasm that she found herself a free desk and sat down.

Turtles? Really? Shaking her head at the professor's example, she pulled out an ink bottle and a quill; she grumbled to herself as she realised she had no black ink left. Never mind, she thought as she exchanged it for what seemed to be the only full bottle left in her bag, He'll just have to deal with a colourful essay. Nib poised over the page, she paused in thought for a moment before scribbling down the beginnings of what she hoped would be a satisfactory answer. The sooner I start, the sooner it'll be over.

Ash's essay

As she added the final touch of writing her name - something she almost always forgot to do - Aislinn read over her completed essay, turtle and all. It didn't exactly seem to answer the question, but she thought it would be good enough to at least get her a passing grade. It wasn't Outstanding by any means, but at least it did the job.

(OOC: I spoilered the essay as it ended up far longer than I intended and I unwisely did it in her handwriting, which is hell to read in small sizes. And also so I don't have to stare at the typos I didn't notice earlier!)

Trina sighed and dipped her quill into her ink, taking time to breathe and think about what she would actually write. Twenty breaths later, her quill finally scratched onto the parchment, her big loopy handwriting revealing itself.

She sighed and looked at her finished work, and checked whether she wrote her name on top. She held her essay in arms length and pursed her lips a how brief it was, but she wanted to be straightforward with her answer. She let the ink dry first and rolled it, glancing around for any familiar faces. Melanie was still a little engrossed with her work so she gave a small wave to Aislinn.

They were spending the period with Hufflepuffs. They were great, but Trina longed for Gryffindors. The first period didn't go right.

With more than a little willpower, Toby dragged himself into the classroom. He was much better at practical subjects, and the fact that they were writing essays made him dislike Magical Theory even more. His spirits rose a little as he noticed a number of his Hufflepuff friends; selecting a seat near Anca and Jenny, he wandered over and dropped his bag on the ground.

It wasn't until he had pulled out his parchment, quill and ink that he turned to read the essay question. Turtles? That's not a bad idea... For a moment he entertained the idea of writing precisely the essay Professor Tortal had told them not to, but he wasn't a big fan of the man and getting on his bad side was not something Toby particularly relished the thought of. After what felt like an hour of agonising over what to write, he gave up and began scribbling. When in doubt, make up a bunch of rubbish.

Toby's essay

The essay wasn't great, but it would have to do. Toby had no intention of carrying on the subject at N.E.W.T. level, so he didn't really see the point of worrying about it. Having finished, Toby glanced around the room to see how the rest of the class were doing.

When Trina walked through the door, Melanie's essay was forgotten. "Hey Trina. What happened with Jack?" she asked, not beating around the bush, but still not insensitively.
