| Welcome to Hogwarts Interactive Role Play, one of the net's best in Harry Potter and Hogwarts role plays. We hope you enjoy your visit. Here at Hogwarts our students are currently in their Seventh Year. Last year, the war against the Knights crescendoed into a direct attack against the school. Disappearances are still reported (or not) daily, and the Dark Lord and his Knights of Walpurgis have succeeded in spreading their message of "do as thou will" far and wide across the globe. Magical Law Enforcement, which is now the only authority in the wizarding world under Martial Law, has responded by tightening security, controlling the media, and strictly enforcing curfews and other laws. Their control is damaging to the people's freedom, and their hierarchy is a suspicious lot. It is clear that some members of the MLE like their new found power a bit too much, others see it necessary, but all are in serious danger of being consumed by it. But with the picture of just what Azariah Amaranth is after becoming ever clearer, and a third player in the form of a group called SAVIOR entering the scene, what will the MLE do next to ensure that they've got the situation under control? The Elementium, the Higher Plane that had once been hidden just beyond the veil in the Department of Mysteries, and the Deathly Hallows. The pieces of the puzzle have been identified, but what picture do they make? Today is Day 1 of Year Seven. Students have had time to recover from the Knight's attack, and are beginning to reluctantly return to the walls of Hogwarts. The safety of the school has been diminished, bringing up the question everyone must ask. Are you safe anywhere these days? It's up to each individual to decide their fate, where will you decide to go? You're currently viewing our forum as a guest. Kiki put her finger to her lips. "If I hold the quill, nobody would ever know!" she whispered to Issac. Just then, June came along, and Beth and Colette. "Hey Girls!" she said, "Hey June! I don't think we had any homework...we might get some tonight, though. All in practice for the O.W.L.S. of course." |

June nodded, sighing with relief. She didn't want to upset Bannishtar in any way, terrified that he would trample her. Of course it would never happen, but June had a lot of illogical and strange fears. Like the OWLS, for instance. The very idea of them was torture to June, and she was one hundred and fourtythree percent sure that she was going to fail them all. Her mum and dad certainly would not like a girl with only t's and d's. She'd be the disgrace of the family. "What happens if you fail every single owl? Then you can't take any classes, can you, because everyone requires like... A A, or EE or something," wondered June out loud, checking if anyone had heard her, "Do you drop out then, and become a criminal because you can only make money by stealing, and then go to Azkaban and..." Her expression grew more and more worried as she spoke. She didn't want to go to Azkaban... |

"You will not fail every single O.W.L., June." Kiki soothed. "Actually...I think I'm going to throw a study-party for us 5th years in the common room. That way we can quiz eachother, practice and study. I'll run it by Professor Stuart, though. And even if we can't, I'll study with you, June." Kiki was no Ravenclaw, but she knew her way around Charms and COMC pretty well. |

"But I will, its like... A fact of life. I don't understand anything of what the teachers talk about, and I've got less magic than the right ear of a squib!" June pouted, sticking out her lip, making up thousands of complains on how extremely stupid and untalented she was. Looking at Kiki, June hoped that she'd contradict her again, and say that June wasn't that stupid and was just obsessing over nothing as usual. She calmed down when Kiki told of her idea, figuring out that perhaps someone could rephrase what the teachers said into something much easier to comprehend, "I guess that could help though... I might get some Acceptables then, at least a couple Poors..." |

"Hello!" Whitney chirped as she strolled into the Divination classroom. She looked around for a seat and noticed that there were not many open seats. She only knew one person in the whole room, Kiki. "Do you mind if i sit here?" she said and pointed to a desk. She placed her things on the desk anyway because they began hurting her arms. The girl sat down and got out a peice of parchment and her quill. Drawing was always a thing Whitney liked to do. Before long she had already had an outline of Eagle, her owl. |

"Alright everyone," said Banni, softly yet firmly, "quiet down, quiet down. We've got a lot to cover before your OWLs. Now, as I've said before, the Divination OWL will not include anything you have learned in the previous two years you've spent in my class. Which," Banni smiled, "is good for those of you who never pay attention. As such, we must focus on techniques for Divination employed by humans." Wait for it... "...if you can call what most human fortune tellers do actual Divination," said the centaur, rolling his eyes. His smile quickly returned when he asked a question of the class: "Quick, one of you tell me what the major philosophical difference is between Divination as I have taught it to you, and mere human fortune-telling nonsense." |

Whitney thought she knew this one. She sat up and raised her hand. When the professor called on her she replied, "The difference is the mere human fortune-tellers usually predict a future of a single being and foretell the the facts that are not very important while Centaur Divination is based on trying to divine important events of the whole wizarding world." |

"Ah," said the centaur, delighted, "a mostly satisfying answer. Yes, even if human divination was more than a collection of nonsense and superstition, it would still fall short in that the predictions made are so limited in scope as to be completely inconsequential. In this class, I have taught you that the world is more than simply a random collection of events and people criss-crossing throughout space and time. I have shown you that there are, whether a kind of "god" or higher being exists or not, patterns to life, even when everything seems random. If something appears to be random, like, say the arrangement of branches on a tree..." Bannishtar lifted his arm to grab a hold of the branch of a tree looming over him. He bent the branch down for the class to see. "It appears random, when one merely looks at it with the assumption that much of life is simply chaos. But, in fact, as I have taught you, there are specific patterns of development. Notice, if you will, how the branches of this tree, well, branch out into smaller versions of the main branch, as do those smaller branches. Each branch is an exact replica of the branch from which it grew, only smaller and smaller each time." The centaur released the branch, which snapped back upwards with a rustle of leaves. "Far from being random," said Banni, his voice earnest and probably more enthusiastic than most would hear from the generally well-composed centaur, "the placement of the branches on a tree are the same repeating pattern. Such is the same with all life. And as such, these patterns can be read and used to predict future events through logical thought. As such, the stars, too, move in such patterns, and they, too, can be read. All the secrets of the universe are present and visible in the stars, which are ciphers. And we, lucky that we are to be conscious beings with a fully-functioning subconscious, have already been gifted with the keys to that cipher. Deep within our minds, we already recognize the patterns, though we do not realize it. If you have ever sat down and simply doodled with your ink and parchment, you have drawn one of these symbols, though our conscious mind does not recognize it, there is a part of you deep inside that knows the patterns of life. I taught you these Archetypes in your third and fourth years. Symbols which represent the basic patterns and blueprints of all life. Your conscious mind might see your own scribbles as a random placement of lines, but, trust me, there is no such thing as 'random'. If something appears random, then you do not yet recognize the pattern. "Twenty points for Hufflepuff, Miss Russell," Banni added. "Now," he said, "Where is the ultimate truth behind fortune telling? Can anyone tell me? Of course you cannot, because there is none. No logical thinking, no learning, and no thirst to understand the world; only plain human vanity." Banni turned around, leaning over to pick something up from the ground. He turned back towards the class. In his right hand was a glass ball. The orb reflected the light of the stars that dotted the ceiling of the classroom, distorting them. Ah, such heavy-handed metaphor, really. This tiny ball has done much to distort the truth of things. "Can anyone tell me what this is?" he asked. |

"Yes it is," said Banni, "take another five points." The centaur turned his head to face one of the Slytherin boys. "Mr. McKelvey," he said, "Catch." Bannishtar tossed the crystal ball in the Slytherin's direction. "What do you see?" asked the centaur. |

Ian sat up against a tree, which was supporting most of his weight. It was a struggle just to get down to Divination, as his entire body felt like jelly. He really should have gone to the Hospital Wing, but how would he explain what had happened? It seemed the Elementium had its dangers. Regular magic doesn't drain a person like that. Ian felt very woozy. The entire room was fuzzy, and every word the centaur spoke in his lecture seemed to run together and become unintelligible by the time they reached Ian's ears. He had a monster headache. |

Of all the classes to have when Iris first gets back from her grandmother's funeral, why this one? For the last few days Iris had been in Spain mourning Adenna's untimely death. The funeral was held yesterday in La Concha, San Sebastian and Iris had arrived at Hogwarts about a half hour ago. She spent the morning in her dormitory unpacking her clothes and pictures of Spain she had taken with her mother and father. Every time Iris would think of her grandmother's death, tears welled up in her eyes but Iris would shake them away. She would not cry, she wasn't weak. Iris entered the Divination classroom blatantly late ,with no sign of remorse upon her face. Who cared if she was late? She could do whatever the hell she wanted to do. On a regular day Iris had no respect for teachers, so why would today be any different? As she watched Alexa wave and mouth "Hi" to her, Iris scoffed and sat else where. She wasn't in the mood to be with some one so happy, and the thought of some strange person treating her like a friend made her laugh. Just because she was a Hufflepuff didn't mean all the other Hufflepuffs could act like Iris was their friend. On the contrary, Iris had wondered why the sorting hat had even put her in Hufflepuff. Both of her parents wanted her to be in Slytherin, but Iris was put into her Grandmother's house Adenna was so proud of Iris, but she was dead now, so what did it matter? |

"Yeah," Dave agreed, nodding to Ariana. "That's probably the best idea, at least until she cools down. Was she mad after I left?" It was a stupid question; Dave knew that Precious would be fuming after what he had done in front of so many people. "Er, nevermind," he said in response to his own question. "But yeah, if you want to meet up later, I'm definitely down." Surprised by the professor's sudden throw of the crystal ball, Dave flinched slightly but managed to catch the orb without incident. "Well," Dave started, peering into the crystal ball. "If I were an experienced seer, sir, I'd say that I saw some sort of shape or pattern that corresponded to a specific omen. But I can't say for sure," Dave said, shrugging. He hoped this was the answer the professor was looking for. It seemed, after all, that the professor was attempting to point out the flaws and differences of human divination in comparison to centaur astrology. |

"One would think so," said Banni, making a mental note to give Slytherin five points, "one would think so. And yet, if you turn to page fifty-six of Unfogging the Future by Cassandra Vablatsky, you will see it gives instructions on who to scry using a crystal ball. Please read along with me now." Bannishtar picked up his own book and began reading from said page: "'To begin, you should settle yourself in a light trance. This can be accomplished by concentrating on breathing deeply and regularly for a few minutes, then picturing a red 7 in your head then an orange 6, yellow 5, green 4, blue 3, purple 2, violet 1 (this is Laurie Cabot's crystal countdown...it works very well to bring on an altered state of awareness..there are thousands of ways to enter a trance state, but I have found this way to be quick and easy to both remember and perform). You will know that you are in the trance state by a feeling of tingling in your hands or body and a slight euphoric or floating calm feeling. Once in this state, concentrate on the crystal ball, let your eyes focus or unfocus as they will, don't think about it too hard, and let your mind wander like you would while daydreaming. After a time, you should begin to see shapes and forms in the play of light within and on the crystal. Like the children's cloud game, or the inkblot test, call or write down what these shapes look like to you...an example reading of mine goes like this: horse, womans head, tree, forest fire, tidal wave, bird. Keep doing this til the symbols either start to repeat or you can't maintain concentration any more. Now the analysis. You take your question that you were divining for and relate these symbols to it. Do not worry what they might mean to someone else, these are YOUR symbols from YOUR dream consciousness...so they will mean what you think they should mean. Write them into a little story about the question (if you are doing a reading for someone else this story is what you would tell them and is the result of the divination). In the example I gave before the question was "Should I move to a new flat?". Horse to me implies freedom and movement, woman's head I took to mean myself specifically my reasoning ability, trees I associate with health and happiness, forest fires I associate with necessary destruction for continued growth, rather like pruning or weeding...tidal waves I associate with a sudden overwhelming and unstoppable force, and in this case I got the sense of a migrating bird. The story I wove goes like this: I need to leave this flat and begin the search for a new one early or I will be forced to take whatever thing comes up when the landlord, who never appreciated my art and was always complaining about the sounds and smells of my work, came calling. Well this proved to be a good reading, I started looking for a new flat immediately, about three months before the landlord had called on me and found a rather nice complex with limited openings and their waiting list was...you guessed it--about three months...when my landlord did come to me, he wanted to hike up my rent--and as you know, those of us blessed with the sight are not always blessed with a significant sum of money as we devote our lives to less mundane things than work--and fortunately my time on the waiting list also ended and I was able to move to a nicer flat for the same amount I was paying for the old. Isn't divination wonderful!'" Bannishtar closed the rather large, black bound book and set it down on a tree stump. "As you can see, these 'signs' that Cassandra Vablatsky had been interpreting were wholly tied to her perception. She outright states that the play of light on the ball is as open to an individual's interpretation as the shapes of clouds in the sky. You may have one opinion of what a cloud looks like, and I may have another. Therefore, what can it really mean? This sort of Divination moves away from ideas and logic and into the realm of casual guesswork and mere vanity. There is no other way to describe it. It is pure vanity to think that one's own perception of something has any power. Yes, her so-called "reading" came true, but it is obvious she was aware that her landlord would come calling soon, so what does any of this really mean other than something you already knew?" Bannishtar looked around at his students. To him, even if they did not understand or appreciate the true art of divination and the struggle of a true seer to discover they mysteries of the universe (or the plight of those unfortunate souls who merely have odd visions which they cannot control), he hoped they would at least understand the heart of the matter. The centaur method of astrology versus mere human fortune telling, was a battle of intellectualism and humility in one's understanding that they could easily be wrong versus mere self-serving vanity and foolishness. There was a broader message in that, Bannishtar thought. "Whether Vablatsky had actually ever seen or not, I cannot say," said the centaur, "but it is clear to me that the methods she employs only feeds her ego--or perhaps her belly, as some fortune tellers find they can make some money out of these fraudulent practices. Perhaps she truly did see, but in the end the veil of mysticism around those random flashes of future-sight that most human diviners tend to have clouds one's view of just how little one truly knows. "So...what does this mean for all of you? Well, as I told my other fifth years, Crystallomancy will be on your OWL exam. The problem is, there is no method which I can teach you. Even the Professors who will be testing you know little other than the theory behind it. And so, that is the focus of the next half-hour of our class time: You'll all be learning how to fake it convincingly, just like a real fortune teller. So, pair up into groups and grab a crystal ball from the box over here beside me and all of you work on your acting skills." Banni gave a look of exasperation. "And yes," he said, "I know. I did just tell you all to cheat on your exams. If it were up to me this kind of nonsense wouldn't be on them, but as it were, the decision is not mine. Take heart that no matter how foolish you will feel giving your fake predictions to the testers, I feel several times more ridiculous having to instruct you in this self-serving nonsense." Flavia glanced at Edward as he slipped into a seat next to her. "This day obviously can't get any better, first Concepts and now Divination. Hopefully we'll have something to watch when furious Precious comes; otherwise you can wake me up after the lesson." "You're right," said Flavia, keeping her voice low as Bannishtar had started talking, "Herbology's after this and we're going to be bored to death, aren't we? "Hey Rod!" Beth greeted her friend as he came to sit next to her, "do you feel ok? I wouldn't want you to catch cold or anything." She felt really guilty for soaking Rodrigo during their previous lesson. She greeted June as well and then another Hufflepuff entering the room. "Have you talked to June lately?" she asked Rodrigo, "she seems kind of…" scared, self-conscious? Beth saw June in various bad moods over the years but she still felt bad for it. She wanted to help her but didn't know how, and she hated it. Beth looked around as Bannishtar finished his long speech. There was Colette on her on side and Rodrigo on the other. Since Colette would most likely be paired with Isaac, it left her and Rod. She really liked this boy, he was one of her best friends but he had usually been with June - and Beth was really glad for it since she liked the two of them together. However, with June out of the picture today, Beth thought it wouldn't hurt to have Rodrigo as a partner for this lesson, maybe she wouldn't even feel, nonsensically, like an intruder. "So, do you want to be my partner, Rod?" Beth grinned, "but I have to warn you, I'm a lousy actress and even a worse liar." Drifting in and out of a daydream, June had problems listening to what Banni said. He used far too many words and spoke too long, June just was unable to pay attention. Doodling down on her notebook, she had written various small keywords like 'fraud', 'vanity', 'bigger meanings'. She didn't quite understand, but it did make her feel a little bit smarter. More concentrated on the elaborate tree she was drawing, inspired by the branch, June kept halving each branch. A heart shaped form came in the middle of her tree, and June drew a tiny circle inside, deciding that it was a sun. Brushing her hair back behind her hair, June returned her attention to Banni, hearing that she needed to pair up with someone. Instantly, she looked to where Rod sat. Realizing that Beth was probably going to work with him, she turned to Kiki, weakly smiling, "Uh, can we work together?" June halfly expected Kiki to say no, and instead work with the Alexa, who'd proved herself to be pretty much a Ravenclaw in disguise. Then again, Katriane did promise, or at least suggest that she'd study with June, and June was very sure that this was studying. |

Aria raised an eyebrow at Dave, after Professor Bannishtar had stopped talking. "Well duh. You did just hugely embarrass her in front of the whole class. I wonder where she is come to think of it." Aria didnt really care where Precious was, for a change, she was enjoying her time with Dave too much for that. She quickly got up, retrieved a Crystal Ball, and sat back down next to him. "Did you want to work as partners? We can always say that Professor Bannishtar paired us up if Precious asks." Aria was glad that Bannishtar had told them to fake their results, even though she was planning to do so anyway. "I know what you're thinking Flavia," said Edward to his fellow Slytherin in a low voice, "but don't you have enough trouble on your head already? Especially with Hufflepuffs." He nodded towards the Hufflepuff prefect; surely, Flavia wasn't physically harming anybody but one false step and there could be more serious consequences for her. After hearing they would need to make pairs, Edward grimaced. Flavia was looking at Nikolai and the two would most likely pair up, as they're going to Yule Ball together. There was no sign of his other friends in class. He didn't blame them for skipping Divination but now he'll have to figure out whom to work with for their task. |
