| Read Today's Daily Prophet: Knights of Walpurgis attack Hogwarts; Belleford steps down as Hogwarts closes until further notice |
| Welcome to Hogwarts Interactive Role Play, one of the net's best in Harry Potter and Hogwarts role plays. We hope you enjoy your visit. Here at Hogwarts our students are currently in their Seventh Year. Last year, the war against the Knights crescendoed into a direct attack against the school. Disappearances are still reported (or not) daily, and the Dark Lord and his Knights of Walpurgis have succeeded in spreading their message of "do as thou will" far and wide across the globe. Magical Law Enforcement, which is now the only authority in the wizarding world under Martial Law, has responded by tightening security, controlling the media, and strictly enforcing curfews and other laws. Their control is damaging to the people's freedom, and their hierarchy is a suspicious lot. It is clear that some members of the MLE like their new found power a bit too much, others see it necessary, but all are in serious danger of being consumed by it. But with the picture of just what Azariah Amaranth is after becoming ever clearer, and a third player in the form of a group called SAVIOR entering the scene, what will the MLE do next to ensure that they've got the situation under control? The Elementium, the Higher Plane that had once been hidden just beyond the veil in the Department of Mysteries, and the Deathly Hallows. The pieces of the puzzle have been identified, but what picture do they make? Today is Day 1 of Year Seven. Students have had time to recover from the Knight's attack, and are beginning to reluctantly return to the walls of Hogwarts. The safety of the school has been diminished, bringing up the question everyone must ask. Are you safe anywhere these days? It's up to each individual to decide their fate, where will you decide to go? You're currently viewing our forum as a guest. Aria walked into the classroom, her high heels clicking on the wooden floor. She nodded to Tortal before taking a seat near Nikolai. She sighed obviously when she finished reading the writing on the board. How could a Slytherin head of house put his students through such a boring essay? Aria flicked her hair in annoyance and begrudgingly took out her stationary. She looked around the class, noticing that Precious's sister was sat nearby, mocking the Gryffindors. Good girl thought Aria, before turning to talk to her. "I could almost bear the lesson, if only we didn't have such a filthy classroom." She laughed at the four Gryffindors, as they struggled to write anything worth a Slytherins attention. |

Oscar felt his heart skip a beat as Daniela suggested that they meet up after class. Oscar had been dying to talk to her about "them", if they had even reached that stage yet. He had almost worked up the courage to ask her, and now it looked like he would have a perfect oppurtunity. Oscar nodded his head, beaming back at her. "Sure thing, I'm looking forward to it already." Oscar looked down at his parchment, somehow the smile remained on his face as he began to write his essay. |

Sierra gave a small smile to Edward. "I actually think it has something to do with Magical Energy being all around us." She began scribbling furiously on her parchment, before nodding towards Ariana. "I agree." She looked around the room, before she lowered her voice, "This is definitely a waste of time." Sierra hoped that Tortal would write more on the board soon. She was seriously getting confused. |

Daniela let out a sigh of relief. She had hoped that she wasn't thinking too far ahead, and she was happy that he wanted to talk about it. "Cool!" She shot a glare at the Slytherins across the room. None of them were taking it seriously, and it was starting to get on her nerves. They were working their butts off, but Tortal wasn't scolding the other students. "Arrogant jerks." |

Charles' ear twitched as he had his back turned towards the class. He looked over the blackboard and coughed, and immediately the enchanted record player's music faded into nothing. Spinning sharply on his heel, Charles took a sip of his mug of coffee and started to walk up the staircase that let to the seats in the back of the class. Pressing his left hand into his pocket, taking another sip of the mug, he finally got to the back wall; he stopped. \ Releasing his hand from the coffee cup which immediately started floating back to the desk, Charles pressed his right hand against the wall and leaning his body weight against it. He channeled magic through his palm, from the room around him, into the enchanted area of the wall. Within the chamber, stones from the walls began to rearrange themselves. In the area that Charles stood, the wall had been pushed out, and a table with countless, odd contraptions (with openings at the top just wide enough to fit a wand through) were built into the table. Towards the front of the class, the record player had cloned itself and had been levitated onto pedestals. A similar contraption to that in the back of the class was now jetting from the side of the record player, and opposed to having a closed top, the top was shaped like a two-pronged fork. On either sides of the classroom, the wall had been pushed out, and two tables on both sides were now inhabiting seemingly useless items. The bland, blank, dungeon-y feel of the classroom faded and was replaced with a sourceless light. Little orbs (of what appeared to be light) floated through the air, from the ground, to the ceiling, before dropping back down and repeating the process. "Now," Charles began, turning on his heel again, "the point of the assignment... on the board... was not to see what you did know about pure magic, but it was to see what you thought you knew." Charles shook his head, heading down the steps towards his desk. " 'To open your mind to the concept, theorize and assume the roles of pure magic in the world, in wizardry, and in life in general.' Theorize and assume. If you cannot do that, how can you expect to come to your own conclusions about anything?" Professor Tortal stopped and leaned against his desk. "15 points from your houses," he sighed, crossing his arms. "Now, if you lot are prepared to do something with pure magic, please, please, please pay attention." Holding out his left palm, he concentrated and channeled the pure magic from the orbs around him into his palms. The magic started to gather and collect and grow to form a shape similar to a flame, and as it reached to be the size of a watermelon, he glanced at his mug of coffee, and then fired the magical energy in its direction. The cup shattered, sending shards of glass in every which direction, spilling the coffee all over Charles' desk. The projectile disintegrated into orbs almost immediately after colliding with the cup. "Pure magical energies. Pure magic exists all around us, and is used for many, many different things. It is used for enchanting. It is used as a nearly unlimited source of magic for any spell, incantation, or curse you will throw. It is, in a sense, the reason that you're here today," Charles boomed, crossing his arms, "Pure magical energies could be absorbed into a specific witch or wizard to serve as an endless source of magic... when enough is swallowed. However, there is barely enough reserves to do so; magic is spread so far apart that it's nearly impossible to find a collective like we have around us today." He waved his palms towards the orbs. He pointed to the back of the class, "There, you will channel pure energies. There is an instruction manual on the table that gives step by step instructions. Main thing there, though, is to channel magic like you would for a spell. I trust that you know how to do that." Charles extended both his arms out towards the sides of the classrooms. "Identify and sense magical energies. Don't use your wand. You're are to hold those items, try to detect whether there is any magic within, and try to see if you can 'pull' the magical energies from it. If you need help, I will assist." Pointing over his shoulder at the record player, Charles sniffed. "Controlling magical energies. This part will include a lot of the concepts that I've taught from my previous lessons - controlling magic, emotional magic, etc. If you're able to get it working, the record player is set to play music that coincides with your emotions." Professor Tortal clapped, pushing himself off the corner of his desk. "You may begin." OOC: Please note, there is no specific way to do it. You just go to the stations and then describe, with at least a little imagery, what happens at each station. The contraptions are to assist in the channeling and controlling, so the students don't have to do the entire thing with their own, limited abilities. It's like a handicap. If you need more instruction, let me know. Items on the tables are just items. You decide what's there. It could be easier to channel and control the magic once you know how to sense and identify pure magic. It's supposed to be vague. Edited by Charles Tortal, Oct 3 2009, 08:32:41 PM.

Nikolai sighed, standing up from his desk. "Might as well give this a shot." He meandered over to one of the tables, inspecting the items on it. He sighed, looking at the random things on it. He saw what looked like an alarm clock. No harm in that. What's the worst that could happen? He placed his wand in the contraption, a frown forming on his face. This was going to be difficult. Placing his hand on the alarm clock, he furrowed his brow, trying to pull the magic out from it. After a few minutes, he finally managed to pull something out of it, although it was nowhere near as big as Professor Tortal's orb. It was more the size of a small marble. A smirk broke out on his face. "I guess I did it right..." He said softly, examining the orb in her hand. Pulling his wand out of the contraption, he stopped concentrating. The lack of concentration or the lack of a wand in the contraption caused the orb to simply disappear. Nikolai raised his eyebrows. Odd. |

Diva furrowed her delicate brows at the Professor's speech. Why were they being punished for following instructions? She didn't even so much as have her name on the paper yet! She stood up, flustered, and headed over to the table. She scanned it for the prettiest item. The closest she could get was a mangled butterfly hair pin. You'd think he'd have some taste. She quickly took over, and scanned the item more closely. The finish had chipped off, and it looked as if it had been stepped on and forgotten in the hallway. Maybe that was to keep anyone from touching it. She placed her wand through the small device and placed her right hand on the hair pin. A pungent smell seemed to sail straight for her nostrils and attack her face, making it itch. "Eugh!" Her hand flinched away from it, and the sensation stopped. It o'viously didn't want to be touched. She eyed it warily before giving it another shot, this time hand a couple centimeters away. She could feel the itching on her fingers as she tried to figure out just what was there. It wasn't hostile, but a rather obnoxious energy that gave her the creeps. As if seeking vengeance, she tried to pull the energy out from the pin. It was like a slight vacuum on both directions until it gave a sudden 'pop!', and it came out freely into her hand. It was a sort of sickly green and the size of an olive; she didn't like touching it much. |

Sierra pursed her lips, standing up and making her way to one of the desks. There was a small, heart shaped locket on one of the desks. She definitely wanted to see what was up with that one. Obviously something, or else it wouldn't have been there. She smiled nervously, placing her wand in the contraption. After she finished that, she looked at the locket again, this time scrutinizing it. It was obviously gold, although it had a green tinge to it. The chain had broken, and there was some ornate carving on it, and it seemed to be of a small bird on an olive branch. Sighing, she decided to get it over with. Sierra placed her hand on it, and was suddenly hit with the worst smell she had ever experienced, as well as a strange, malevolent energy. It smelled like dirt, and roses and something unexplainable but she assumed it was death. She yanked her hand away violently. "What was that..." She hissed, raven hair falling into her face. . She noticed that Diva had seemed to have a similar experience, so she decided she'd try to keep her hand farther away. She concentrated on pulling the energy out, and was hit even more powerfully with the malevolently energy as well as a somber one. Suddenly there was a 'pop' and she was holding a blackish red, grape sized ball of something. And she didn't want to be holding it. |

Oscar smirked at Daniela's comment, his eyes glancing over the nearby Slytherins. "Tell me about it, I'm suprised they can tear themselves away from the mirror in the morning." Then again, Oscar thought the same about Daniela, but in a different sense. She was just so effortlessly beautiful that it really took his breath away. He had high hopes for their conversation later, it just had to work out. Back to the lesson, Oscar moved cautiously towards the table at the back, scanning the table with it's various items. His eyes were almost immediately drawn to a colourful card near the edge of the table. After briefly examining it, he recognised it as a "Tarot" card, one form of divination that some gifted muggles were actually able to use. The card in question was "The Lovers", which uncontrollably brought the image of Daniela's face back into his mind. He shook his head slightly, trying to focus on the task before him. "I can look at her all I want later, not now." he thought. Oscar moved his wand into the contraption and placed his right hand over the card, careful not to touch it, after watching two Slytherin's reactions. All at once, a peculiar sensation washed over him. He felt oddly light, as if being lifted slightly from the ground. A scent of roses, coffee and....Daniela's hair hit his nostrils, causing a smile to break over his face. He concentrated hard, trying to pull the energy towards him. It came easily, resulting in a pinkish clear ball, about the size of a strawberry, resting in the palm of his hand. As he held it the scents and feeling intensified. He beamed and turned slightly to show Daniela. "No manly coloured energy for me." he joked. |

Lucy turned at the sound of Ariana's voice. To be honest, Lucy didn't really like her. She was another follower in Precious' clique, and it got annoying how people could worship her...but then again, Lucy shouldn't be the one talking. After all, Lucy tried her hardest to be like Precious as well. She smirked at her comment, but didn't reply. Biting her lip, she listened as the professor explained whatever this class was about, and her eyes widened as Nikolai went up to the tables. Lucy wouldn't dare do such a thing. She wasn't intelligent, and if she would try, she would fail. She decided to stay seated, awkwardly with Ariana. She watched as people went up. |

Daniela laughed at Oscar's comment. "Aw! Come on! It's not that bad." She smiled when she saw the card he chose, beaming at him. She laughed slightly, getting up and going to one of the tables. She pursed her lips, scanning the table. She decided on a small figurine of a horse. Noticing how Oscar kept his hand a few centimeters above his object, she decided to do the same. Suddenly, she was hit with this overwhelming sense of grief and sorrow and something distinctly painful. An incredibly pungent odor hit her nose, and it smelled like curdled milk. Suddenly, the grief was replaced by a feeling so pure, Daniela wasn't even sure what it was. She turned her head away, trying to pull the energy out of it. Finally, with an almost sickening pop, Daniela was holding a purple blob the size of a peach core. She brushed a piece of blonde hair out of her face. "That was eventful..." |

Nikolai sighed, walking over to Lucy. "Come on. I'll help you with it if you want." He extended his hand to her, motioning towards the tables with the other. Then he lowered his voice. "Unless you want to hang out with Ariana. In which case, fine. But knowing you, I don't think you want too." He smirked, "It's really not that bad. You just have to pick the right item. For example," He motioned towards his own clock, "Just watch what you pick. Some of them have pretty bad energies. Just pick something that looks innocent enough. Like a baby doll or something. Nothing bad can come out of a baby doll." He laughed lightly, "Come on, Lucy. It'll be fine." Edited by Nikolai Ivanov, Oct 3 2009, 06:36:11 PM.

Lucy's eyes widened as Nikolai coaxed her to go with him. She was hardly paying attention, and still yet had no idea what to do. She was sure with Nikolai's help, she wouldn't achieve much either. Well, it still was worth a try. Especially when Nikolai was helping her . . . "Nikolai! I couldn't . . ." Lucy protested. She sighed. " I didn't understand what Tortal was saying.." she mumbled quietly to herself. Her eyes flickered to Ariana as Nikolai mentioned her name. Reluctantly, she slipped her hand into his. It almost fit perfectly. She stood, and ran a hand through her hair. She was positive she was going to blow up the class. "Erm . . . what?" she asked blankly, blinking a couple of times. She hated herself for sounding so stupid. Especially in front of a boy. Edited by Luciana Hindert, Oct 3 2009, 07:16:15 PM.

Horacio arched a skeptical eyebrow as the professor...reprimanded them, so to speak. Great. Now he felt like he'd been tested. He hated being tested. Only thing worse was knowing he had failed the testing. A nasty grimace spread his features...but he stepped up towards one of the desks anyway, as though determined to redeem himself. On the table was, oddly enough, a silver figurine of a rodent-like animal. There were other things as well, but that was what called to Horacio the most. Pulling it towards him, he tried to concentrate purely on it. Inside though, his hand was itching to go for his wand. He was much more used to using it to cast magicks, rather than having to just...stand there. Eyes squinted in attempted concentration, brow furrowed, both hands held about a foot over the item, as though he were attempting to scry a crystal ball. He felt like an idiot. After what seemed like ages though, it paid off. Little traces of energy...resembling teensy little specks of shiny dust, began to float through the air up towards his outstretched hands, a mixed assortment of colours, from gold, to silver, to a merged colour of blue and green. They began forming into one larger ball which hovered barely several inches beneath his hands, collecting themselves together until finally, he had a ball of energy about the size of a muggle baseball. Hearing the numerous popping sounds around him, of the others energies disintegrating, Horacio was determined not to allow his to dissapear and, rather than allowing his concentration to slip, he did the opposite...or well, tried to, focusing his mind, his own energy, upon his little ball even more. Now..it wasn't as if he could just go around and destroy classroom property with a ball that, for all he knew, he could barely even control...but he did play a little game of bouncy with it, tossing it up and down within the palm of his hand, before, after several seconds of glimmering, the ball of energy faded, much to Horacio's surprise, with a loud POP. |

"It's fine! I didn't either, but I still managed it." He blushed a little bit when she took his hand. They fit almost exactly, "Alright, these things have energy and some of it is incredibly disturbing." He pulled her over to the table, scanning it for any innocent looking items. "How about this? I mean, it's a tiara. What's the worst that can happen? So here's what you do. You put your wand into the the contraption thingy. Then hover your hand a few centimeters over the tiara and concentrate on pulling the energy out. If you want, I can help you with that too." Nikolai blushed, "I mean if you want me too." |

Ian shook his head as he completed the last sentence of his in-class assignment. Honestly, he expected this of most of the Gryffindors, but of his own house? How did it get to the point where a relatively small group from his house managed to be so arrogant, yet so incompetent, bringing down both Slytherin's house points as well as its reputation in the process? That was Ian's problem with a number of his fellow Slytherins: Excluding Julian, Tinsley, Kayden, Sawyer, himself and few others, most of the other Slytherins were irritatingly arrogant, and without the talent or intelligence that would justify such big-headedness. Sure, Ian boasted a lot like the rest of them, but he liked to think that he proved himself once and a while, and that he justified his words with actions. ...just as long as it wasn't herbology or Transfiguration that he's having to prove himself in (ironic that his Transfiguration grades are only barely average, however, considering what he had managed to accomplish--Ian blames it on Professor Aphelion's poor teaching skills.) The words seemed to come to Ian quite rapidly. Of course, the way Ian's mind raced constantly about this or that subject, these ideas had popped into his head before (often half-formed in his head before fleeing from his conscious mind). It seemed as though he possessed at least some ability to recall them if he thought about it a little. The rest of the parchment was filled with things he pulled out of his ass which might very well be valid statements and ponderings as well, though he doubted it. The point was, unlike the others (Ian took a lot of pride in that) he guessed right in that he was meant to simply ponder the idea of pure magic--he doubted if too many people pondered what was really a philosophical subject all that much. At last, Ian had filled a foot-long section of parchment with his thoughts. He examined it to be sure it was presentable enough to be left on Tortal's desk: Pure magic, I would assume, is magic that has yet to be manipulated to a specific end. It is not a "spell" that has been cast, as that would require the forethought to shape it into a desired form, but I surmise that it is simply magic in its raw and unchanged form. Perhaps accidental magic often used by untrained witches and wizards is a form of pure magic? The magic being (unintentionally) used by young witches and wizards has not been shaped or formed to a specific end, but rather seems to react to pure emotion: anger may cause glass to shatter, the urge to get away may cause one to unknowingly apparate, ect. These can't be classified as "spells" simply because there is no set of guidelines or method to them. Magic simply reacts, seemingly, to emotion, as if it can, somehow, feel the pang of the human heart. I might also wonder if pure magic isn't the basis of spell creation. One could not use an established spell to create a completely new one, after all. When casting a known spell one has learned from a book or in class, the methods for manipulating the magical energies required are already there, and one merely needs to follow them. Creating a new spell might be trickier, might require knowledge of how to manipulate pure magical energies? How to shape them into a desired form for use in spell whose method has yet to be hammered out for the use of others? And then there's non verbal and wandless magic. These require more the right thought than method, don't they? Without the use of incantations to properly spell out what the witch or wizard wants, or without a magical instrument to channel the energy, it really is just the thought that counts right? So, perhaps, that is also manipulating pure magical energy? The elementium, as well, perhaps is a kind of pure magical energy? The incantation you taught me and my fellow elementus is not one that really directs the element we control. The rest is our own thoughts, so I wonder what more we could do with a little more imagination...Is this what sets apart truly powerful wizards like Salazar Slytherin or perhaps even Merlin from the rest? That they possessed the brain power to see beyond the actions and methods and into the heart of what magic is? Ian placed his essay on Tortal's desk and made his way over to the tables where many objects were placed. Really, here was where Ian was confused. We are supposed to sense it? he thought to himself. He stood there, pondering a moment, watching to see what the others did. |

Diana just stared in disbelief at Professor Tortal as he rattled off what to do. There goes my grade in Magical Concepts. she thought to herself, as she cleared her desk of parchment and ink. Concentrating. [Flashback] Halloween, 1993 Diana, aged 4, sat on the floor, coloring in a Halloween workbook....more like scribbling. Moving her curly brown hair out of her eyes with a small hand, she finished decorating a black cat. Only he was far more colors than just black. She ran her finger over his fur, when he started to purr, vibrating underneath her hand. Startled, she retracted her hand, her chocolate eyes wide. She warily outstretched her hand and softly pet the cat...hearing it meow softly and begin to walk around the page...rubbing it's fuzzy head under her palm, making her giggle. "I'll name you...Patches." The cat purred, then jumped off the page onto her lap. "Di--I'm *achoo* sneezing, did you bring some *achoo* cat hair when you came in from trick-or-trea--" Selena, nose bright red, stood transfixed in the doorway, watching her 4 year old pet a green, orange, pink and gold striped cat. "Isn't he cute? Can we keep him? He just jumped off the page!" Diana asked, holding him up. Her mother's eyes averted to the page, and sure enough, it was now blank. "Mrow?" "HELIOS!" Selena shouted, running from the room. [End Flashback] Diana focused on the magic. It was palpable, just as it had been years ago. She strode to the table, and drew her wand on a metal file... |

OOC: I suppose I didn't make the item section all that clear. My apologies - illness has my mind a bunch of different places. Some of the items have been enchanted to hold pure magic, while others haven't. You're supposed to try and "sense" (basically an influenced intuition) and then "pull" (channel) the pure magic out of the items. It will be at random, so once a student is finished channeling the magic out of the item, it will enter a different item. I edited my last in character post to add that. Don't worry if you already posted. Edited by Charles Tortal, Oct 3 2009, 08:36:35 PM.

Taking a deep breath, she held her hands about a few inches above the mirror and concentrated hard. Come on, she thought, hurry up. Suddenly, rainbow-coloured fragments rose form the mirror's polished surface and at her outstretched hands. "OUCH!" yelled Flavia as the many little fragments swirled around and one touched her hand. It was like being stung-some weird magical energy was clearly forming underneath her palms. A fist-sized, glittering golden ball was forming, slowly but surely. She watched as Horacio played with his ball, wondering how he'd ever gotten such a nice ball of magic. Her glittering golden ball was kind of...misshapen. Finally, she turned around to look at Nikolai and Lucy. They seemed to be enjoying themselves together, and Sierra was next to Diva. Shrugging, Flavia deliberately flung the ball at Horacio, so that it disappeared with a very loud 'pop!' in his face. She walked over to Edward. "Hey," she began, "Gotten anything yet?" |

Edward stood up from his desk, narrowed his body and confidently paced towards the table with various items as he recalled Tortal's words. "Don't use your wand." Edward had observed others before and looked at the contraption. No, he wasn't going to put his wand through that. Instead, he placed it just next to the contraption. Now, what was next… "You're are to hold those items, try to detect whether there is any magic within, and try to see if you can 'pull' the magical energies from it." Edward looked at the objects on the table, considering which one should he try first. He spotted a porcelain cup and smirked, picking it up into his palms. He closed his eyes and tried to concentrate solely on the object and its energy. Nothing happened. His eyebrows furrowed, it must have been a wrong item. Edward set it back down and picked another item. He had already tried five objects and nothing had happened. He began to feel frustrated that it could be his fault he hadn't succeeded. Finally he picked up a simple silver spoon, held it in his fingers and closed his eyes again. That was definitely a different feeling than with the other items. He concentrated even more and his fingers began to tingle. Edward opened his eyes to see tiny lights swirling around the object until it formed a small grayish ball. Suddenly the record player switched on and started playing some music (Losing My Religion - REM). It startled Edward and he spun around, grabbing his wand and pointing it at the suspicious source of those sounds. The spoon fell to the ground with a loud ting and the record player turned silent again. A little self-conscious and with a scowl on his face, Edward placed his wand back into the pocket of his robes and walked back to his desk to finish the essay. "Hey, gotten anything yet?" Edward heard Flavia speak next to him and looked up. "Yeah I almost murdered Tortal's recorder," grimaced Edward. "By the way, nicely done," he nodded towards Horacio with a smirk. He had to admit the lesson wasn't as boring as he thought it would be but he couldn't wait for it to end. He felt somewhat uncomfortable. (OOC: I hope it's at least remotely right lol) Edited by Edward Fairfax, Oct 4 2009, 03:38:54 AM.
