| Read Today's Daily Prophet: Knights of Walpurgis attack Hogwarts; Belleford steps down as Hogwarts closes until further notice |
| Welcome to Hogwarts Interactive Role Play, one of the net's best in Harry Potter and Hogwarts role plays. We hope you enjoy your visit. Here at Hogwarts our students are currently in their Seventh Year. Last year, the war against the Knights crescendoed into a direct attack against the school. Disappearances are still reported (or not) daily, and the Dark Lord and his Knights of Walpurgis have succeeded in spreading their message of "do as thou will" far and wide across the globe. Magical Law Enforcement, which is now the only authority in the wizarding world under Martial Law, has responded by tightening security, controlling the media, and strictly enforcing curfews and other laws. Their control is damaging to the people's freedom, and their hierarchy is a suspicious lot. It is clear that some members of the MLE like their new found power a bit too much, others see it necessary, but all are in serious danger of being consumed by it. But with the picture of just what Azariah Amaranth is after becoming ever clearer, and a third player in the form of a group called SAVIOR entering the scene, what will the MLE do next to ensure that they've got the situation under control? The Elementium, the Higher Plane that had once been hidden just beyond the veil in the Department of Mysteries, and the Deathly Hallows. The pieces of the puzzle have been identified, but what picture do they make? Today is Day 1 of Year Seven. Students have had time to recover from the Knight's attack, and are beginning to reluctantly return to the walls of Hogwarts. The safety of the school has been diminished, bringing up the question everyone must ask. Are you safe anywhere these days? It's up to each individual to decide their fate, where will you decide to go? You're currently viewing our forum as a guest. The Daily Prophet Year Five - Day Four The Triwizard Tournament Commences! Interviews with the champions, plus exclusive coverage of the First Task by Charlie Johnson In the wake of the terror that Azariah Amaranth and his Knights have brought to our world, it is good to see a little friendly competition between young witches and wizards. Such is the spirit of the Triwizard Tournament. When Azariah had escaped his bonds and laid waste to not only the Ministry of Magic, but our whole way of life, it was thought that the Triwizard Tournament--having been secretly in the works for more than a year--would be canceled. However, it became clear that the tournament would go on despite the circumstances, as explained by Dr. Belleford, head of the Department for International Magical Cooperation (who is working tirelessly with other departments here and abroad--DESPITE the Ministry itself now being effective defunct--in order to make the tournament possible): "The Goblet of fire, into which the champions had submitted their names in order to be chosen, constitutes a magically binding contract," says Belleford (who happens to be the husband of Professor Bidelia Belleford, Headmistress of Hogwarts, "No matter what the circumstance, the tournament must now go on, as there is no turning back for our three champions." The Tournament, however, poses some some challenges for the new security measures that have been implemented by Magical Law Enforcement, who are concerned about all the new faces within Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry these days. "So many strangers and unknown quantities," said MLE Lieutenant Dick Jeeters, "We'd have preferred it if they had waited just a bit before jumping to having the tournament so soon after Amaranth had been captured. But Belleford tends to get what she wants around here, and she wanted the tournament. I guess having a husband as the Head of the IMC department doesn't hurt, either." Still, the MLE has risen to the challenge just as they had risen to the challenge when the Ministry had fallen and the world was in need of order. They have tightened security on every level of the castle, and aurors and MLE agents stand guard at every entrance and corridor. Secrecy Sensors have been placed throughout the school. Any staff, student, or visitor could not enter or exit without a full body scan by a probity probe. Mr. Jeeters even hints that there may be means through which the MLE can observe any happening throughout the castle where they may not be present: "If anyone so much as farts in the corridors of that castle, we'll know," he says. I am sure everyone will agree those are comforting thoughts. And with those thoughts in mind, I was able to sit down and have a little chat with Tristan Nightshade of Hogwarts, Mariane Quicompoix of Beauxbatons, and Piotr Rasputin of Durmstrang during the traditional "Weighing of the Wands" just before the First Task. [Normally, this would be Rita Skeeter's column; however, as of the day of the Task, Rita was in St. Mungos being treated for injuries sustained during the Dark Lord's escape--ed.] First up was Mr. Nightshade, the Hogwarts Champion and current fifth year in Ravenclaw house. I sat down with Mr. Nightshade as celebrated wand-maker Ollivander examined the other champions' wands. Mr. Nightshade seemed confident, if a bit anxious, and rightly so, for at age fifteen he is the youngest of the three Champions, as well as the youngest in centuries. I begin my line of questioning on this note. Charlie Johnson: "So. Mr. Nightshade, You're the youngest champion for any of the three schools in at least three centuries. How must you be feeling now?" Tristan Nightshade: "Honestly? Really nervous but really excited! It's a huge honor to be selected at such a young age so I'm keen to do Hogwarts and Britain proud. Now if I can just keep my breakfast down." CJ: "And what do you think of your fellow champions. You will be competing with them, and to be perfectly honest, the odds aren't in your favor when you're opponents are a practically fully trained witch and wizard. We've gotten some letters, you know, and I'm sure Bidelia has, too, concerning some people's concern and outrage over a fifth year being chosen. The worst of which are calling for the Headmistress' immediate resignation. What would you have to say to these people?" TN: "Well I certainly don't agree with that. Professor Belleford had nothing to do with my selection. I may be young but I am definitely not the first 15 year old to be chosen for the Tournament. I went looking through names of old participants and there have been others my age so I'm confident I can hold my own against my opponents. I won't deny they likely know more than I do but what I lack in experience I make up for with nerve and determination. Being Quidditch captain for several years helps develop those qualities and I'm sure they'll help me through." CJ: "You're a very confident young man, Mr. Nightshade." All in all, Mr. Nightshade had struck me as a very intelligent and capable young man--despite his age--with charisma to spare, seeming to house all the qualities and more prized by Rowena Ravenclaw herself. I regret having had to send him on his way before getting to more in-depth questioning, but I had other champions to interview and limited space in this article. Perhaps another time. However, Mariane Quicompoix was more than happy to give me a bit of her time for an interview. CJ: "Good morning, Miss--do I have this right? Miss Quicompoix?" [The interviewer had mistakenly pronounced it "Key-com-poy"--ed.] Mariane Quicompoix: "Mariane Key-comb-pwah. Anything for the Prophet." CJ: "Being from France, Miss Quicompoix, how do you find Britain? How do you find Hogwarts?" MC: "Eet is very cold! We are from the south of France, where eet is very warm and the weather is almost always agreeable! I have seen enough rain to last the rest of my life! 'Ogwarts 'as been very 'ospitable. The students are charming, the faculty are also welcoming. I do enjoy the more ancient campus here. Beauxbatons unveiled a new wing last..." (At this point, Madame LeClaire, Headmistress of Beauxbatons spoke up--ed) Madame LeClaire: "...last spring." MC: "Oui. Hogwarts is a very nice school, but one cannot compare it to Beauxbatons. The stunning campuses, the luxurious dormitories...Hogwarts is...well, not quite in the same category. Eet is very comfortable here, though. Very...quaint. I have longed to see where my seester has chosen to educate herself." CJ: "You have a sister that goes to Hogwarts? So your family does have ties to Britain, then?" MC: "Oui, she's in the 'ouse of Hufflepuff, in the fifth year. It's a revolting story, actually. Our parents met at a Triwizard's Tournament eons ago. Maman, a Beauxbatons student, and Papa, also in the 'ouse of Poufsouffle. ["Poufsouffle" is French for "Hufflepuff"--ed.] Our father is a dual-citizen here as well as in France. I guess you could say we 'ave ties here, oui. "Her name is Katriane, my seester." CJ: "And how do you view your chances in this tournament? You must certainly be a powerful witch if you were chosen out of all your school mates." MC: "I think that I'm just as capable as the other two champions. All I can say is that ze Goblet chose me for a reazon. It chose me out of all my classmates, so I obviously have something that [pause] sets me above the herd." There was certainly something alluring about this young woman, and in fact she was quite strikingly beautiful. She seemed strong and capable despite her frail appearance at first glance. I do not think anyone should write her out just yet, even if one of her opponents in this tournament is the six-foot-three and very muscular Piotr Rasputin of Durmstrang. Pure one hundred percent Russian from the top of his crew cut to the soles of his size sixteen shoes, Mr. Rasputin cut an impressive figure, prompting most experts to put early odds in two-to-one in the Durmstrang's favor. I sat down with the favorite-to-win to get his take on all of this, as well as a question I am sure has been burning in many of our minds for quite some time. I am, of course, referring to Durmstrang's alleged penchant for teaching the Dark Arts, and what that might mean for Piotr in this tournament. I do, however, start on a lighter (yet perhaps, for some, equally burning) subject: CJ: "How are you finding Hogwarts and Britain? Are they too your liking? What do you think of your rivals in this tournament?" Piotr Rasputin: "Hogwarts is a lot...larger than Durmstrang. It is a lot varmer here in Britain as vell. And it is all so very lavish here, there are few paintings in our castle, and the dishware is plane pewter, not at all the gold and silver we have eaten from here. And you also have ghosts, which I find very interesting--vell, all save for that Peeves, who tried to strangle me with a venemous tentacula he dropped from above as I was exploring one day." CJ: "I understand that Durmstrang, unlike most schools, goes deeper into the subject of the Dark Arts than simply how to defend against them. I am not here to judge anyone, however, I feel I need to ask how the differences in your training will affect the competition. I doubt that the other two champions are as familiar with that branch of magic, and so do you think it gives you an advantage?" PR: "I understand that the Dark Arts is not something taught at this school or at Beauxbatons. In all honesty, I do not like them much, either. I understand that each of them vas created for the purpose of harming another human being. However, I do agree with the staff of the Institute on one thing, and that is that the intent of the person casting the spell outweighs the original purpose of the spell ven it vas created. The Dark spell known as the Entrail-Expelling Curse vas invented to help people, to allow a doctor access to a sick person's inner organs so that they could be cleaned and healed. It vas, of course, misguided, Medieval ideas at vork, but the intent vas good, though now it is classified as a Dark Art. And it is possible to kill someone with a few stunners, or a number of mishandled spells. In fact, at Durmstrang they vould rather us have a knowledge of these spells and a full understanding of vat they do, even if ve choose not to use them, as I do. Durmstrang is simply more...how do you say...." (At this point, Piotr whispers something to Dr. Borislav Ootenbucker in Russian, apparently trying to ascertain English word would be appropriate for what he wanted to say. He turns back, speaking to me with renewed confidence.) PR: "--Durmstrang is often more pragmatic concerning certain magics than others. I can assure you ve understand very vell the danger and the often evil intent behind these spells, perhaps more than most. "As for the tournament, I can not say. The Dark Arts are illegal, even in my homeland of Russia. They are designed for the hurting, maiming, or killing of other human beings, there is no denying this fact. And, as it stands, our obstacles in this tournament are not each other, so they would have little use even if I chose to use them." CJ: "Very interesting. I think you may have cleared up some things for us here in Britain. You see, Durmstrang is often seen here as a school for--" PR: "Dark vizards?" CJ: "Yes. And while it may not change anyone's opinion, you've certainly shed some real light on the mythology that has been created around one of Hogwarts' rival schools. I thank you for your time, Piotr." PR: "You're velcome." It seemed to me, despite his appearance as a well-muscled pretty-boy, that there are brains to go along with that well-chisled physique. Piotr's answer to the Dark Arts question in particular struck me as quite pragmatic and insightful, and his eyes were alight with an almost child-like enthusiasm as he described Hogwarts as he saw it. Surely he's given us all something to think about. Moving on the the Task itself, it was a cold day out on the grounds at the edge of the Forbidden Forest which borders Hogwarts. The three champions were sent into the forest by themselves and with little in the way of instruction on what they were supposed to be doing other than to "seek the aid of the centaurs." As readers of the Prophet are most likely aware, the centaurs were at the center of a rather large controversy two years ago, in which the Ministry had declared the right to limit their territories even further than they already had been. The centaurs had retaliated with threats. It was later found that Dolores Umbridge, Senior Undersecretary to the Minister at that time, was behind the decree. Her motives to this day remain a mystery, as she died in a duel against Hogwarts staff after her scheme had been uncovered. The centaurs this time around seemed, thankfully, much less confrontational than they had been two years prior, and they aided the Champions by giving them three challenges after which they would receive a reward (or, in the case of the second challenge, they would find the reward while completing the challenge). The centaurs set them three errands to run which included hunting for prey and gathering herbs. For each champion, a scrap of animal hide, an ornate bell, and a chunk of ice were the champions' rewards. One might think this task to be soft, but it proved quite dangerous for all involved. As each champion found and reattached all the broken pieces of a bell (found during the gathering of the herbs) the bell began to ring, the spell on which attracted all manner of dangerous creature. Most notably, the Red Caps that have plagued the forest mysteriously since the events of two years ago (when a horde of them swarmed the grounds in an apparent attempt to overrun the ancient school, acting very much out of line with usual Red Cap behavior) were a common sight. The attacking creatures, driven mad by the chimes of the enchanted bells, proved too much for the Durmstrang champion, who, as stated previously, had been the favorite to win. Both his left leg and left arm were badly injured, and he'd been forced to call for help, but not before taking out a small platoon of those horrible, blood thirst red caps. His determination, perhaps, saved him from losing more points than he had. "I am ashamed of my performance," said Piotr in the medical tent after the tournament, "I feel as though I have let my school, my friends, and myself down. I must strive to be sure that this never happens again." Piotr had been forced to send up with his wand the red sparks that would alert any centaurs in the area that there was a champion in too deep. It was not centaurs, however, that had come to Piotr's rescue, but young Mr. Nightshade. Nobly giving up his first place lead to help his fellow champion, Mr. Nightshade made a strong impression on both the centaurs and the judges. However, seizing the opportunity, it was Mariane Quicompoix who came in first, having escaped the forest with all three items long before Nightshade came bearing Rasputin's battered body. In the end, all three champions made it out of the forest with all three items. It was then that the centaurs--a rare and majestic sight to most witches and wizards--emerged from the forest to discuss the champions' performance with the judges. In the end, the score came out like this: Out of Fifty Possible Points: Mariane - 40 Tristan - 39 Piotr - 34 All in all a close game and a very auspicious beginning to what proves to be an exciting competition. It has been confirmed by Bidelia Belleford herself that the three items obtained are indeed clues for the next task, so good look to our champions in deciphering them and good luck to them in the tasks ahead. Be sure to to keep reading subsequent issues for updates on the Tournament. Edited by Charlie Johnson, Sep 28 2009, 10:11:09 PM.
