Read Today's Daily Prophet: Knights of Walpurgis attack Hogwarts; Belleford steps down as Hogwarts closes until further notice
Welcome to Hogwarts Interactive Role Play, one of the net's best in Harry Potter and Hogwarts role plays. We hope you enjoy your visit.

Here at Hogwarts our students are currently in their Seventh Year. Last year, the war against the Knights crescendoed into a direct attack against the school. Disappearances are still reported (or not) daily, and the Dark Lord and his Knights of Walpurgis have succeeded in spreading their message of "do as thou will" far and wide across the globe. Magical Law Enforcement, which is now the only authority in the wizarding world under Martial Law, has responded by tightening security, controlling the media, and strictly enforcing curfews and other laws. Their control is damaging to the people's freedom, and their hierarchy is a suspicious lot. It is clear that some members of the MLE like their new found power a bit too much, others see it necessary, but all are in serious danger of being consumed by it. But with the picture of just what Azariah Amaranth is after becoming ever clearer, and a third player in the form of a group called SAVIOR entering the scene, what will the MLE do next to ensure that they've got the situation under control?

The Elementium, the Higher Plane that had once been hidden just beyond the veil in the Department of Mysteries, and the Deathly Hallows. The pieces of the puzzle have been identified, but what picture do they make?

Today is Day 1 of Year Seven. Students have had time to recover from the Knight's attack, and are beginning to reluctantly return to the walls of Hogwarts. The safety of the school has been diminished, bringing up the question everyone must ask. Are you safe anywhere these days? It's up to each individual to decide their fate, where will you decide to go?

"I see," said Charlie, "consider it struck, my dear." He was not in the least perturbed. He did not want to cause any problems for they young lady, or her sister. And in any case, he should be used to striking information from his reports by now. Damn that Barrabas DuMaine.

Charlie moved on to the large Durmstrang boy.

"Excuse me, Mr. Rasputin?" he said, politely, "A word for the Prophet? How are you finding Hogwarts and Britain? Are they too your liking? What do you think of your rivals in this tournament?"

Piotr, who had been left slightly blushing at the Quibbler reporter's comment about him being in love (though, he was also wondering what a snozzcumber is and how the reporter could see them on his person), turned to the man. He shook the older reporter's hand.

"Of course," he said, "Hogwarts is a lot...larger than Durmstrang. It is a lot varmer here in Britain as vell. And it is all so very lavish here, there are few paintings in our castle, and the dishware is plane pewter, not at all the gold and silver we have eaten from here. And you also have ghosts, which I find very interesting--vell, all save for that Peeves, who tried to strangle me with a venemous tentacula he dropped from above as I was exploring one day." Piotr was generally enthusiastic, though he kept that to a minimum in case the Doctor though he was complaining about the frugality of Durmstrang under his Headmastership.

"I am very interested in seeing the wizarding village that lies next to the school. Ve have nothing like that at Durmstrang. All that lies near us is the surrounding lake, which--"

"Now, now, Piotr," Dr. Ootenbucker interjected, "Let us not speak too much of our school's surroundings, lest they figure out where it is hidden."

Charlie frowned. The Doctor sure was protective of his school's secrets, and that only made Charlie more intrigued. Still, he doubted he could get the Piotr or the Doctor to speak more on this issue, and the subject of this article was, indeed, the champions. Another time, perhaps.

"Now," said Charlie, about to ask a difficult question that could possibly offend the young man or the Doctor, "I understand that Durmstrang, unlike most schools, goes deeper into the subject of the Dark Arts than simply how to defend against them. I am not here to judge anyone, however, I feel I need to ask how the differences in your training will affect the competition. I doubt that the other two champions are as familiar with that branch of magic, and so do you think it gives you an advantage?"

Piotr glanced at Dr. Ootenbucker. The Doctor was frowning, yet he nodded for Piotr to go on.

"Vell," said Piotr, carefully choosing his words, "I understand that the Dark Arts is not something taught at this school or at Beauxbatons. In all honesty, I do not like them much, either. I understand that each of them vas created for the purpose of harming another human being. However, I do agree with the staff of the Institute on one thing, and that is that the intent of the person casting the spell outweighs the original purpose of the spell ven it vas created. The Dark spell known as the Entrail-Expelling Curse vas invented to help people, to allow a doctor access to a sick person's inner organs so that they could be cleaned and healed. It vas, of course, misguided, Medieval ideas at vork, but the intent vas good, though now it is classified as a Dark Art. And it is possible to kill someone with a few stunners, or a number of mishandled spells. In fact, at Durmstrang they vould rather us have a knowledge of these spells and a full understanding of vat they do, even if ve choose not to use them, as I do. Durmstrang is simply more...how do you say...."

Piotr whispered something in Russian to the Doctor. Dr. Ootenbucker was much more versed in English than Piotr. Dr. Ootenbucker whispered back, and Piotr nodded, turning back to his interviewer.

"--Durmstrang is often more pragmatic concerning certain magics than others. I can assure you ve understand very vell the danger and the often evil intent behind these spells, perhaps more than most.

"As for the tournament, I can not say. The Dark Arts are illegal, even in my homeland of Russia. They are designed for the hurting, maiming, or killing of other human beings, there is no denying this fact. And, as it stands, our obstacles in this tournament are not each other, so they would have little use even if I chose to use them."

Charlie was, to be frank, shocked by the articulateness of Piotr's answer. It made him ponder the subject a bit more. Personally, he found the Dark Arts and anyone who practiced them detestable, and yet Piotr made some valid points. However, there was little doubt that this was probably the philosophy of the school that was taught to the young man.

"I see," said Charlie, "Very interesting. I think you may have cleared up some things for us here in Britain. You see, Durmstrang is often seen here as a school for--"

"Dark vizards?" asked Piotr.

"Yes," said Charlie, "And while it may not change anyone's opinion, you've certainly shed some real light on the mythology that has been created around some of Hogwarts' rival schools. I thank you for your time, Piotr."

"You're velcome," said Piotr.

The Durmstrang looked around, realizing that it seemed as though everyone was just about done.

"I do not mean to sound impatient," he said, "but I do agree vith the other champions. Are ve able to leave?"

Piotr looked over at Dr. Ootenbucker. The Doctor seemed a bit displeased. It seemed to Piotr that he felt that the young man had revealed too much about the Institute's training methods.

((OOC: We can change the time now, if you like, and everyone can gather down at the edge of the forest--make a thread in the forest and we'll just do all one thread--but I would like for Charlie, Angelma, and perhaps Tristan to remain for just a moment as everyone else leaves. The two reporters are going to have an important conversation and I think it would be cool if Tristan eavesdrops.))

Tristan's Edit: If that's the case then you need to do or say something to get his interest. Tristan isn't a big eavesdropper for no reason.

As everyone else was leaving, Charlie slipped his parchment pad back into a deep pocket in his robes. As he made to leave, he glanced derisively at Angelma.

"I hope you're not planning on printing any of that," he said. He couldn't help it. The questions she was asking them, for Merlin's sake!

Angelma shrugged.

"Of course I am, Charles" she said primly. "I'm not the one being censured. I can print whatever I'd like. Though--" Angie paused, turning to look at him with an odd look on her face.

"--I never thought I'd see the day where the Quibbler is more credible than the Prophet." Angelma snapped her fingers, and her quill shot to it's carrying case.

"Even though the Quibbler is completely factual, most readers turn to the Prophet...and now they'llturn to the Quibbler.." she said as she too gathered her parchment.

"Be a dear and let the Aurors who edit your articles know I say hello, won't you Charlie?" she said innocently.

How dare her! To think that tripe she writes...and yet, she was on the mark, there. And Charlie's initial urge to fire back at her dissolved. His derisive glare softened into a look of defeat.

"It was that obvious, wasn't it?" he said wearily, looking over his shoulder, as if he was expecting someone to be behind him. "Look, Angelma," he said, imploringly, yet also pleadingly. He wanted her to understand. You don't know how powerful these people are now. I'd be careful what you print if you value your career. I'm only here, filling in for Rita Skeeter because this is about the only story I can write without them getting their hands on it."

Of course everyone turns to the Prophet for news. That's why Magical Law had to step in, because they needed everyone on their side.

Angelma stamped her boot, her features angry.

"DAMN YOUR CAREER!!" she boomed. "A GOOD REPORTER WOULD SACRIFICE THIER LIFE TO GIVE THEIR READERS THE TRUTH! That's the oath we took. To report the news and report the world's events as we see them. Our readership wants to see how we see the world. They don't want some half-arsed, cookie-cutter story that has been watered down so that sheep could comprehend."

Angelma took a breath.

"I didn't check my journalistic integrity at the door, Charlie. YOU did. And you've failed every single person who reads your column." she said, her voice dramatically low, looking at him accusingly.

"Besides, it won't be fun to win Witch Weekly's Favorite Journalist award if I didn't beat you fair and square." the corners of her mouth twitched--it was well known that Charlie consistently won the award, because of all his middle-aged female fans.

Tristan had made to leave with the rest of the adults and Champions but stopped, ""I hope you're not planning on printing any of that," The Prophet editor exclaimed to Angelma. Not normally one to eavesdrop, he found the rivalry between the two reporters amusing and a little intriguing. Both exchanged barbs about the quality of the others reporting before one comment got his complete and undivided attention, "You don't know how powerful these people are now." His eyes widened and he slipped into the shadows, trying to get as close as possible without being seen. Where before he had just stood casually listening to them talk, not minding if he was discovered, the conversation had taken an unexpected turn which he knew was not meant for outsider ears.

As he listened the facts became clear: the Ministry, despite its chaotic state, was still manipulating the news in the Daily Prophet. The publication that a huge majority of the wizarding world relied on for their news was feeding them exactly what the Government wanted them to hear. His eyes narrowed as he tried to get a little closer to hear if there was anything else he should know, all thoughts of the impending task momentarily forgotten.

Her words bit deep, and all the more because it was the editor of the Quibbler that was speaking them. There were many things Charlie wanted to tell the public. He wanted there to be honesty and transparency about the actions of Magical Law Enforcement now that they were temporarily in charge. But that was the problem: they were in charge.

"You don't understand, Angelma," said Charlie through clenched teeth, "There is no Ministry anymore. And these aren't politicians. Martial Law may be the only way for us to keep some scrap of order, and Merlin knows that we'd be doomed without Law Enforcement if The Dark Lord decided to strike now. But all the same, they have unlimited power as of right now, and do you not think that some of them might be inclined to abuse that power? Do you think I don't want to let the community know everything that's going on, good or ill? But I don't have that option under the Martial Law of Barrabas DuMaine. They can do what they like so long as they're in power. We don't have any choice right now!"

Tristan listened in amazement, completely unaware that this sort of activity was happening right under the public's nose. He supposed it was true though; he too accepted the spoofed tripe that the Prophet delivered every morning as fact. He had never really considered the possibility that it was being censored by someone but under Martial Law it made perfect sense. Was the world in far worse shape than people were willing to admit?

Angelma looked upon Charlie with pity. "We always have a choice, Charlie. There is right and there iss wrong. You've done your readers a great disservice. You've turned them into mindless drones for the Magical Law Enforcement and robbed them of their right to knowledge."

"It's time to act, Charlie. You know it as well as I do. We've got to use our quills as our weapons. There is a muggle saying, "The pen is mightier than the sword." If we rally the people against the machine that supresses them--they'll fight. And they'll win."

"Don't you see? We CAN beat this, Charlie. So what'll it be? Are you going to be the Ministry/MLE's tool, or are you going to be a sarden journalist?"[/color

Tristan glanced at his watch, his eyes widening in shock. He'd lingered for ten minutes and was now massively late for the first task! His eyes flicked back to the two reporters, making sure they wouldn't hear him leave. He checked his pocket to make sure his wand was still there and scarpered from the room.
