| Welcome to Hogwarts Interactive Role Play, one of the net's best in Harry Potter and Hogwarts role plays. We hope you enjoy your visit. Here at Hogwarts our students are currently in their Seventh Year. Last year, the war against the Knights crescendoed into a direct attack against the school. Disappearances are still reported (or not) daily, and the Dark Lord and his Knights of Walpurgis have succeeded in spreading their message of "do as thou will" far and wide across the globe. Magical Law Enforcement, which is now the only authority in the wizarding world under Martial Law, has responded by tightening security, controlling the media, and strictly enforcing curfews and other laws. Their control is damaging to the people's freedom, and their hierarchy is a suspicious lot. It is clear that some members of the MLE like their new found power a bit too much, others see it necessary, but all are in serious danger of being consumed by it. But with the picture of just what Azariah Amaranth is after becoming ever clearer, and a third player in the form of a group called SAVIOR entering the scene, what will the MLE do next to ensure that they've got the situation under control? The Elementium, the Higher Plane that had once been hidden just beyond the veil in the Department of Mysteries, and the Deathly Hallows. The pieces of the puzzle have been identified, but what picture do they make? Today is Day 1 of Year Seven. Students have had time to recover from the Knight's attack, and are beginning to reluctantly return to the walls of Hogwarts. The safety of the school has been diminished, bringing up the question everyone must ask. Are you safe anywhere these days? It's up to each individual to decide their fate, where will you decide to go? You're currently viewing our forum as a guest. "Ah close, Miss Gray, but not quite," said Banni, "the difference between divining the fate of all races and mere fortune telling is right in their descriptions: while one deals with the fate of all, the other is concerned with the life and fortune of the individual. Using crystal balls, tarot cards, or...less savory methods we'll only be reading about this term." Banni did not plan on a hands-on course in bird-entrail reading. The whole thing was disgusting, not to mention... "I am afraid, of course, that each and every one of these methods are false," said Banni with confidence, "Human fortune-tellers often foolishly engage in such acts to feed their own egos. Many are frauds, others may have seen, it is had to know, but if they have then they may have only done it once in their life, in the rest of it is to affirm to them and to others that they indeed have the gift. Further, it is foolish to think that stars and spirits of this world are concerned with the lives of each individual. The planets and their alignments have no bearing on the course of your own life. To think otherwise, to think that the great workings of our world are somehow concerned with any of our individual petty lives if foolishness. This world is shaped by the actions of everyone, even if a few stand out as having a greater impact than others. If you learn anything from my lessons this year, class, I hope it is the simple fact that the universe, and especially the alignment of its planets, do not revolve around you. To think otherwise is vanity. Therefore, so are these methods. What I have shown you in earlier lessons is the mere truth that the laws and patterns that govern our world govern all, and they are not concerned with the fate of the individual. Logical, far-reaching, and unbiased. We centaurs strive to understand what we have seen and make no judgments, bu the methods I am to teach you this year, which will be on your O.W.L.s, are the exact opposite. Today, we shall start with crystal balls. Open your books to the first chapter and someone give me everything they can gather about the crystal ball. You may also pose any questions you may have," |

Harmony listened to the discussion with interest. Personally, she did not quite know how to express what she was thinking, so she didn't open her mouth, until Professor Bannishtar said, "someone give me everything they can gather about the crystal ball. You may also pose any questions you may have." Harmony raised her hand tentatively, without even opening her book. Crystal balls seemed like her sort of thing. Woah, I never realised I was so... superstitious! "Well, aren't crystal balls used by clairvoyants for scrying? And if you don't have a crystal ball you can use a pool of water or something like that to scry... can't you? They're called... something else... my mum told me about it once, she went through a phase of being really superstitious when she was younger..." Harmony blushed as she realised she was babbling, and searched frantically for the word. "Something weird... like a horse..." she mumbled, "Shew!" she shouted. "A Shew stone! That's what it's called!" Harmony beamed, proud that she'd remembered this, then realised that everyone would think her totally weird for this and immediately blushed. She looked around, looking for a friendly face. Well, a single face: Jay's. She stared around, the blush slowly fading from her face, as she couldn't see him anywhere. Where is he? What if he's done something... dumb? What if it's all my fault that he's not here? What if he's... she could barely bring herself to think the word. Dead? She shook her head slightly, forcing the thought out of her mind. He wouldn't... Would he? No, I'm sure he wouldn't. But- she forced herself to stop thinking and opened the textbook, turning to the page with information on crystal balls and immersed herself in the information, forcing away all uncomfortable thoughts. Lucy cringed again as Bannishtar basically told her that she was completely wrong, and decided to stay quiet for the rest of the lesson. Instead, while others were still discussing, she quietly got some parchment, a quill and some ink and wrote a note in large letters to Diana: She held it up so Diana could see, then turned her attention back to the centaur. Although Divination wasn't one of her strong points, she let out an excited squeak at the crystal balls - she'd always been skeptical about their power and wondered if they actually worked. |

Margo listened to Professor Bannishtar's explination and instructions. She paused for a moment, listening to the rustling of pages being turned all around her, then opened her book. After reading a few lines and waiting for an appropriate moment, she took out a piece of parchment. On it, Margo scrawled 'So.... what happened?' And nudged the note over to Lucy with the end of her quill, careful to stare at the pages of the heavy textbook she had recently received with what she hoped was convincing concentration. |

Savannah looked at her watch and then again focused on her textbook. She was waiting for a phone call, or contact from her agent. Savannah was trying to purchase herself a home, but was having quite a difficulty due to the fact that many realestate agents refused to deal with or even consider fifteen year olds as potential buyers. There were a few other things on her mind as well. Sighing, Savannah looked around the classroom to see if anyone else thought this was a waste of time. Tired of standing, she pulled out a notebook and set it on the ground. Next time, Savannah would remember to bring a blanket or pillow to sit on. Pulling out a quill and another book, Savannah began writting down some plans and supplies that she'd need in order to host the best party ever. Of course there were reasons to celebrate, the choosing of the champions, hallowe'en, and obviously her return to Hogwarts. With the best care that she could, Savannah decorated some invitations while trying to look like she was participating in the class going on around her. |

Grant shifted slightly, leaning his back against the wall. While many people felt that Divination was a useless subject, Grant thought is was mystifying, even majestic. The idea that the individual itself was not the center of the universe was a theory many of the students attending Hogwarts had yet to clue in on. The subject was expansive, not to mention mind blowing. He always theorized that the universe was not just a cluster of random events, but that everything had an impact on each other. Grant had thought himself to be an optimist. He pulled out his book from his bag and flipped absentmindedly through it until he reached the chapter on crystal balls. Despite what others said, Grant couldn't deny that Bannishtar knew his stuff. Listening intently, Grant let his mind wrap around the centaurs words. "Crystal ball gazing seems a little remedial for Seers," He began, wetting his lips. Grant rarely spoke up during class, he didn't like attention, or the threat of being wrong. "I mean, isn't what someone sees in a crystal ball subjective? It's filled with...smoke. A puff could look like one thing to one person, and a complete opposite shape to another." Grant tripped over his words, he didn't dare look up as he smiled sheepishly, "What I mean is, how does anyone get any sort of information from something so trivial?" He pondered with a shrug of his shoulders. |

Litha sighed heavily as she shifted in her seat, Divination wasn't one of her favorite classes but it was a class and she had to sit through it. She glanced around then spotted Grant , she looked at him then smiled lightly as she waved a hand but no too noticable. She then glanced back to the Professor tapping her fingers idley on her desk but made sure not to do it too loudly to annoy anyone. Something was still on her mind like who would she go to the feast with or maybe even if she was going at all... She didn't know that many people because she was so quiet and didn't like talking that much, she also didn't like big crowds, they made her nervous. She sighed heavily as she tried to pay attention. |

"Yes, shew stones, scrying upon the water, and crystal balls all fall under the same category," said Banni, "Take five points for Gryffindor, miss Hughes. And excellent observation, Mr. Winters. Yes, what can be seen in the crystal ball, shew stone, or surface of the water lends itself far too much to interpretation. Take five points for your house as well. "Now, my people are no fools, and we do not hold any misconceptions about the limits of our knowledge. One must never fool oneself into believing that they hold the key to unbiased truth. To be sentient, indeed, is to be biased in your interpretation of information. As I have taught you, even the signs read by my people can be misinterpreted. And perhaps that, class, is the true fallacy of fortune telling: It is too personal. Not only is it concerned with the individual, assuming that the individual is somehow important enough that the stars have somehow preordained their path, but that it is up to the individual to interpret the meaning often from devices of their own creation. "In the end, pride and vanity have much to do with it here, as I have said," the centaur went on, "Many fortune tellers will not accept the possibility that they could be wrong. Their perception is far too tied up with the objects and mechanisms of their own design. And that is not how one should view the world." Bannishtar paused for any questions. Regardless of whether or not these human children learned anything of Divination (even Bannishtar was quite convinced that the subject was useless to most of them, anyhow, regardless of whether or not they believed in it) that the principles behind the methods of his people (which governed much more than simply their mystic practices) were of empirical importance to this new generation of human beings. It was more than knowledge Bannishtar wished to pass to his students. It was something that most of their parents, in the ignorance of their parents' parents, were fortunate enough to be exposed to in the intolerant environments of the past: New ideas, and new philosophies. Margo waited for Lucy to reply to her note, occasionally throwing glances to her to see if she had noticed the little piece of parchment. She listened as Bannishtar made a little speech, suprised by how interesting he made divination. The last part of his speech confused her, though. Margo waved her hand in the air enthusiastically. "You said we shouldn't veiw the world with objects of our own design, but isn't that what everything is? I mean, what isn't someone's design. No method has existed for all eternity. It's not like rocks or air or trees. Everything had to be designed by someone at somepoint, didn't it? |

Her expression didn't yet betray the deep, profound effect Bannishtar's words had on her. In truth, Emma's expression betrayed little. There was a very curious smile on her face - not one of happiness, no, but one more that seemed forced. Blinking, Emma shook her curls free and cracked her neck simply by throwing her head to the left and the right. Her chin touched her right shoulder and a loud pop echoed through the silence-struck classroom. With a start, Emma smelt the air cautiously. Something smelled...so familiar...like she could place it from a dream with valiant effort. What was that smell? Sniffing the air like a dog, Emma's pert nose twitched. What .. Emma barely remembered having a grandmother, but she certainly knew that a Grand-mère existed. There were few memories, but the ones that had lasted through the years stood as tributes, stood as evidence that, at one time, Emma did belong to something - if anything. Horseback riding in Russia, singing songs in Germany, the sizzling beaches of Spain and the food of Greece...where Grand-mère went, so did Emma. Emma hadn't been older than four - in fact, she was four when she went on a tour of Europe with her Grand-mère, and she remembered each detail as though it were engraved into her mind .. The smell lingered about the classroom and Emma caught her breath. It was the scent of vanilla - Grand-mère's perfume. "Dear Emma," said Emma's grandmother, patiently walking hand in hand with her small, rosy-cheeked, honey haired granddaughter. "Do you ever think of what you would like to be when you grow older?" With a sweet smile, she looked down at the only grandchild Yves Gray had ever given her. Emma noticed that her sweet smile had something behind it. Was it sadness? There was a strange glistening to her round eyes - eyes that looked nothing like Emma's. Emma blinked up at her. "I wanna be a singer." "You can't carry a tune, mon petit bébé," said Grand-mère offhandedly. "What of...being a Professeur? Ou .. ou .." "Mommy wanted to be a singer, too," said Emma simply. "Before me, and before Daddy." "Oh yes," said Grand-mère darkly. "Your mother wanted to be many things." Yanking on Emma's wrist a bit tougher and with a much stronger grip than she'd intended, Grand-mère brought a whining Emma down the street quickly. "And look how that turned out." Emma remembered the bitterness of her voice, the darkness in her tone and the shadows that had seemed to creep upon Grand-mère's face as she said that. Emma frowned. Grand-mère had seemingly vanished after their grand trip. Emma didn't remember the funeral at all, for which she was considerably thankful, but she did remember the reactions of her family. None of Emma's mother's side of the family had shown their faces: Emma vividly remembered her mother crumpling into a heap of tears, while Emma's father repeated rhythmic words over, and over, like a mantra, or even a prayer... "Je savais que la vérité, je savais que la vérité, je savais que la vérité, et un jour tout le monde le sait aussi." Emma shrugged. She didn't know what her family was talking about, but as far as she was concerned, the moment Emma turned seventeen and became a legal adult she was leaving. She was leaving Hogwarts, leaving France...leaving Hellius, leaving Grant, leaving snobby old Tinsley and boring old Ravenclaw and heading somewhere .. warm. Maybe America. Emma had never been there, but didn't America have so much to offer? Besides bad health care. Maybe Canada instead. But first, Emma had to pass the O.W.L.s and stop forgetting everything. She glanced at Grant and smiled sheepishly. She'd certainly miss him if she ever actually did leave everyone .. everything behind. Emma reached for his hand and gave it a good squeeze, tenderly and full of warmth. Maybe Emma would miss him most of all. Margo's voice broke Emma's reverie. "But to excel at Divination, or life in general, one must be objective. Open to new ideas," said Emma tentatively, raising her hand. "Sure, philosophies are all designed by someone at some point, but the point is to not linger on that. It's to take others opinions into consideration and then make your own. What other people have created shouldn't define what you do." Emma paused. "We can break the cycle." "Professor," added Emma with a smile, "You should be a motivational speaker or something, you know. I've never heard anyone say anything like that before, but suddenly it makes sense." Emma shrugged. She didn't blush - what was there to blush over? Blushing had become something of Emma's past. Now, fearless, she sat up a bit straighter, still holding Grant's hand inadvertently. "...Certainly is a different way to think." But as far as Emma was concerned, anything new was good for her. Anything. Edited by Emma Gray, Jun 7 2009, 07:03:09 PM.

Lucy read Margo's note once over and again picked up her quill, letting the feather tickle her chin as she thought how to put the morning into words. Well, Lucy was about to write more when Bannistar started talking. She looked up again to check he wasn't looking at her and scribbled a quick note. Basically, I told him to meet me, then walked away, partly because I was trying (probably too hard and really obviously) to look cool with it, and partly because I was really quite nervous, then June started talking to me, and I looked back at him and he was like,"I'll be there!" Lucy's smile returned, and she flicked the note back over to Margo, looking up in time to catch the end of Bannishtar's speech. She had no idea what he was talking about, but still felt defensive about these 'fortune tellers'. "They're only humans trying to make a living." Lucy muttered quietly, mainly to herself, then sure she'd said another stupid thing before the lesson was over, she hoped no one had heard and quickly turned her thoughts back to what she was going to wear tonight, and if she was going to dress up. |

Avery had been sitting quietly in the back of the room throughout the beginning of the lesson. It was something highly unusual for the normally outspoken red head. However, she had been concentrating on the lesson... with at least half her mind. She sat back and listened to the discussions, note-passings, and teachings that went on in front of her, silently answering the questions in her mind. She looked about at her peers. She felt like she didn't know anyone in the classroom. This, unfortunately, was true. Avery gritted her teeth. She made a Halloween resolution: this year she would make an effort to get to know at least someone. Maybe at the feast... She raised her head to look at the girl who had asked a question. Sad that she didn't know her name... She raised her hand, for the first time. "I think what it means is that we shouldn't view things as our own personal creation. True, everything was made by someone, but don't view it as an accomplishment on your part. Admit a mistake and move on. Don't constantly try to assert that you're correct..." she said. She trailed off at the end, feeling that perhaps this was too much to start off a school year. Heck, she didn't even know if she was right. Edited by Avery Griffith, Jun 19 2009, 06:55:23 PM.

Snaking out her hand, she grabbed the parchment. Margo smiled to herself as she read Lucy's reply. Well duh! Was Lucy seriously surprised at Teddy's answer? He was OBVIOUSLY going to accept. Margo was still grinning when she brushed the hair out of her eyes and scribbled a reply. Of course. What did you expect? He's soooooo in to you. He was too nervous to ask you out himself. I volunteered to ask you for him, but he didn't trust me. Anyway, I need the details. What are you going to be? How are you going to do your hair? Are you going to let him kiss you? I NEED to know. Then she pushed the note back towards Lucy, amazed that noone had noticed the piece of parchment migrating between them yet. Edited by Margo Wright, Jun 8 2009, 02:09:42 PM.

Bannishtar was about to correct Miss Wright when Miss Gray and Miss Avery both spoke up. The two of them, at least, had good heads on their shoulders, though Miss Avery had been able to explain more succinctly. "Excellent," said Banni, "Miss Gray. Miss Avery. Take ten points for your house for each of you. Yes, the core of centaur philosophy concerning Divination is to accept that one could be wrong. There is no such thing as absolute truth as defined by an individual, according to the views of my people. "Now--" Bannishtar stopped when he heard muttering. "Miss Hughes?" said Banni, "Did you have something important to add to the discussion? And Miss Wright? You wouldn't happen to be discussing today's lesson amongst yourselves, now would you?" he asked. Of course, he knew that was no the case. |

Margo cringed as Bannishtar turned and repremanded the pair. She faught against the urge to reach out and grab the note, knowing that it would only draw more attention to something he hopefully hadn't spotted. Margo decisivly determined it was time for a little fast talking. "Well, not technically, but kind of...." Margo paused here to give a small, nervous smile, "See, Lucy was kind of nervous about the feast tonight, and she said she wished she had the inner eye so she could see what would happen. And I said it wouldn't make a differance, because the same thing would happen anyway. And she said she could change it, but I said that she couldn't. I think that in the future you've already seen the future in the past, if that makes any sense. What do you think - about changing the future, I mean?" |

Bannishtar blinked. "Yes," Bannishtar said, "that...makes sense...I suppose. Right." The centaur did not press the issue. This was only his first class and he had three more to look forward to today, plus he had to finish the pen for Madame Leclair's Abraxan horses before dinner. It was going to be a long busy day and he had not the will nor the energy to deal with trivial matters like note-passing today. "Moving on," he said. "Now," said the centaur, "as you may have guessed the methods I have taught you the past two years will not be on your practical O.W.L. exam, nor are they acknowledged in any way in the written test. I will not be testing you myself, so I have no say in the content of the exam, I'm afraid. This is why these lessons are now necessary. In order to advance to N.E.W.T. level Divination, however, I do require only the minimum grade of "Acceptable", however, I am certain that for most of you this will be our last year together in this classroom. I understand that my subject may not fit in your future plans. However, it is my wish that you at least study hard in order to obtain an O.W.L. in this subject, even if you are not planning to take it at the N.E.W.T. level. The more O.W.L.s you have, the better your application for future jobs will look." The centaur, of course, had been among humans for about a decade now. Most of their ways were commonplace to him after ten years. But these tests seemed rather ridiculous to him. Sure, he understood that one must be proved qualified for a certain occupation or area of study, but for one test to determine all of a person's future options? It did not make sense to him. Still, Bidelia prefers them to sit the examination, and Banni realized that he is here and has this job and this shelter at the sufferance of the people of the Wizarding world. The centaur must do his best to comply with the human beings' wishes for their children. He owed them that much. "This of course," said Banni, "brings the issue of practical examinations. Now, tea leaves and tarrot cards I can teach you the perceived meanings of, so no worries there, even if it means nothing in the end. But dream interpretation and crystal ball gazing is obvious poppycock--I don't even know why they have it as part of the exam. Therefore, my only advice to you--and you will never, ever hear a Professor say this again in your life--is to make it all up. Study hard for the rest of you exam, perhaps even learn why these methods are not only false but pure vanity, and when it comes to most of the practical, make like real fortune tellers and fake it convincingly." |

Avery fought back a snort of laughter at the girl's quick-witted, yet not entirely believable, answer to the professor's scolding. She grinned, pleased that she had been able to award her House with some points. It seemed as if getting back into the swing of things wouldn't be as hard as she had made it out to be. Avery's eyes widened at the professor's right out there, fake-it-to-make-it, attitude on the dreans and crystal ball gazing portion of the exams. She would have laughed out loud if it hadn't been too entirely rude. Fake it, eh? she thought, clicking her quill on the side of her book. A serene smile crept upon the corners of her mouth. If anything, creativity, and, of course, improvising were one of Avery's strongest points. She was looking forward to 'cheating' on her exams. Oh, how very un-Ravenclaw like, she chided herself with a grin. She looked back at the girls the professor had called Miss Wright and, as 'Miss Wright' had called the other girl, Lucy. It didn't give her any clue on 'Miss Wright's' first name, but all the same, it gave her at least some idea of who at least one person was in the school. She sunk back a bit, imagining possible ways to 'interpret dreams'... |

Margo breathed a sigh of releif, at least on the inside. Thankfully, Bannishtar had beleived her story - or at least been so confused by it he didn't realize she was lying. Margo justed hoped that Lucy would grab the note and shove it as far into her bag as she possibly could. After Bannishtar's speech, Margo felt even more confident than before. Less to study, and if she could just make up a story to fool a professor she could certaintly fudge some fog shapes in a glass ball. This exam was in the bag! Or, at least it would be after a few hours of studing.............. |

Dahlia walked into the classroom realizing she was a tad bit late, but the completeness of the students weren't piled in regardless. Catching Banni's eye, she nodded hoping he wouldn't mind the lateness. Searching for a place to sit, she found Emma and.. Grant. Her and Grant hadn't spent the biggest amount of time together in awhile so she wondered what it could possibly be like. Dahlia was changed. Her skin grew paler, her body thinned out, and her hair grew out much longer and was dyed to a very dark color. Her piercing blue eyes scanned at the two lookin awkwardly close. She shrugged it off and waltzed over to them, taking a seat on the left side of Grant. "Long time, no see," she replied with an anxious, but gorgeous smile. |

Lucy felt herself blushing as she read Margo's note, and looked up to check Banni wasn't looking as she swung her body round so she was lying on her stomach. Unfortunatly, he was. She looked down and put a hand to her hair as she always did when being confronted by a teacher. Lucy stayed quiet while Margo explained to him that they were talking about the lesson, but snorted quietly with laughter as she finished, and Bannishtar started another speech, this one about how to make up the crystal ball part of the exam. She smiled at his bluntness, and scrunched up the note, holding it tightly in her hand until she could find a bin to dispose of it in. |
