| Welcome to Hogwarts Interactive Role Play, one of the net's best in Harry Potter and Hogwarts role plays. We hope you enjoy your visit. Here at Hogwarts our students are currently in their Seventh Year. Last year, the war against the Knights crescendoed into a direct attack against the school. Disappearances are still reported (or not) daily, and the Dark Lord and his Knights of Walpurgis have succeeded in spreading their message of "do as thou will" far and wide across the globe. Magical Law Enforcement, which is now the only authority in the wizarding world under Martial Law, has responded by tightening security, controlling the media, and strictly enforcing curfews and other laws. Their control is damaging to the people's freedom, and their hierarchy is a suspicious lot. It is clear that some members of the MLE like their new found power a bit too much, others see it necessary, but all are in serious danger of being consumed by it. But with the picture of just what Azariah Amaranth is after becoming ever clearer, and a third player in the form of a group called SAVIOR entering the scene, what will the MLE do next to ensure that they've got the situation under control? The Elementium, the Higher Plane that had once been hidden just beyond the veil in the Department of Mysteries, and the Deathly Hallows. The pieces of the puzzle have been identified, but what picture do they make? Today is Day 1 of Year Seven. Students have had time to recover from the Knight's attack, and are beginning to reluctantly return to the walls of Hogwarts. The safety of the school has been diminished, bringing up the question everyone must ask. Are you safe anywhere these days? It's up to each individual to decide their fate, where will you decide to go? You're currently viewing our forum as a guest. Sean listened to the Professor's intriguing words intently, with the sole purpose of learning everything he had to offer. As the Professor lectured, Sean nodded contently, taking in every small bit of information he could. Whilst listening to the Professor, he began to take notes, as dictated. Called Five Year War by Wizards. Called Fight For Freedom by elves. He nodded intently, and tried to recall what the Professor was saying. Elves are made inferior because they are stronger. Enslave them so they don't revolt. THE MINISTRY CAUSED THE SITUATION IN THE FOREST. He smirked and noticed his almost sloppy handwriting. He chuckled silently and looked at the Professor. Hmm... What can I ask about this? He shrugged. He looked at Ian squarely. "Don't smart-mouth me, Ian." He looked at the Professor, got out his red satin handkerchief and rubbed it calmly, tracing over the S.R.L. in the corner. Coughing only slightly, he covered his mouth with it and wiped the corners of his face, like when in lunch, with manners like a sophisticated person should. Eagerly awaiting more of an explanation, he looked at the Professor squarely. He noticed that he did not write. He simply pointed his wand at the board and it wrote what he thought. Erm... I wish I could learn that. He sighed and waited for the Professor to continue. |

However, Sean's retort hadn't really registered, for his eyes were now locked on Professor Tortal, his eyebrows contracted, glaring. Ian was enraged by the fact that the Professor, just like his family, had compared him to his older, stronger, purer step-brother. He meant to retort with the fact that all this was true, but Alphonse had one weakness in that he was a moron who got where he was by having a smarter, more talented father, and kissing up to whomever mattered--but Ian realized that this would probably just come off as a childish remark, no matter how true it was. Still, the thought crossed Ian's mind as to HOW Professor Tortal knew anything of his brother's magical skill. Sure, what with all the stuff in the papers concerning the division he heads in the Ministry and all the problems they've been having withe centaurs and whatnot, but Ian never read anything in the papers about him having power sevenfold that of his younger brother's. --Then again, Ian hadn't really read them at all. He'd scoffed at the idea that anyone would trust Alphonse as head of anything short of perhaps the "Division Soft Padding and Toys with Non-Choking Parts" so he doesn't hurt himself. Then a thought struck him and he raised his hand. "Funny that," he said as his scowl became a smirk of vindictive delight, "Seeing as we're talking about wizard-creature relations gone sour, and my brother happens to be head of the Beast Division, which is currently bungling the situation with the centaurs." His smirk grew broader and haughtier, "I've been waiting two years for that moron to have something blow up in his stupid face. I mean, who cares if you can make loud bangs and smoke with your wand better than other people can if your partly to blame for one of the biggest fiasco's in recent Ministry history?" ((OOC: I think the beast division oversees centaurs. I know they SHOULD be classified as beings, but I think I read somewhere that they are wrongly classified as beasts.)) |

OOC: I'm going to let my hate for the ministry be known since I'm going to try and establish a new governmental power later on. The Ministry and the people in the Ministry are selfish bastards that don't care about anything other than control and power, dear Mr. Ponte du lac. If it weren't for the huge mess and disruptions that our Headmistress is making for them at this very moment, the situation in the forest would be practically unheard of. As was seen during the Five Year War, wizards and witches alike simply wanted control over all magical beings; because of our vast forces and very well educated soldiers, we were able to take control of pretty much every single race out there. However, to keep the peace, we let them live as they wanted to without us interfering. With the recent bill on half breeds, the ministry is once again trying to barricade the freedom of humanoid-creatures and beasts, Charles rambled, beginning to show a horrible scowl. This isn't just one person's fault in whole, but the entire Ministry is to blame. He took a deep breath to calm himself back to the emotionlessness that he once displayed and he nodded, turning back towards the board once more. He decided to leave what was written there because the next period would require it as well. Back to the lesson then... Slipping his hands into his pockets, he straightened his posture past was was already close to perfect. He looked around at the students and many of them weren't exactly paying attention. He ignored it - if they wanted to fail, it wasn't his problem. Magic can be a living thing, but no one is entirely sure. We can control it, but at times, it responds to the oddest of things: Love, hate, selflessness, thankfulness... he trailed off, shaking himself back to the topic. Much magic trails back before the dawn of time that is still unexplained to this day. It acts out of it's own will, as it seems, and when it does, it's effects are odd. There was a story about a young boy who saved his little sister from some sort of magical beast and he died. Whenever the girl is in proximity to dark creatures, they run away for reasons that are still unknown. I personally think that if we can study these... strange happenings of magical phenomenon, we can learn more about magic itself. |

Annie was furious; Tortal didn't even cast two looks at her writing. Still, if a professor meant it sucked, then it most probably did. Annie bit the anger in her; she could take care of that later, when she was alone. Still, easily distracted, as Annie was, she took up her hand and said, "Please, Sir. If you consider the Ministry as incompetent fools, do you then also mean that the electors of this Ministry, almost the whole wizarding community, excluding those without the right to vote that is, are also incompetent fools? I must say that it, in my point of opinion, is basically only shearing over them all with a comb, which I believe is a sort of discrimination, in where you do not see the individuals beneath all the people. Still, I must say that the whole concept of the Ministry and of course the Ministry itself is a failure, but the failure must be seen from different angles, and that, I believe, that is the reason of the many stupid failures of the Ministry of Magic." Annie looked straight forward, not afraid of saying her opinion out loud. With that she returned to the task, writing notes. |

Will stayed quiet. It seemed like it would get nasty rather quickly and he wanted no part in it. He wrote some notes and doodled a bit while listening to one of his fellow Ravenclaws. She raised a good point. "I agree with what she said." He mumbled aloud. |

Ella, whose own father was a fairly respected man working in the ministry, couldn't help but feel annoyed and a little angry at Professor Tortal's remark. Her head of house had areputation as one not to cross, though, and she managed not keep her mouth shut, although she couldn't help scowling at the professor as she took notes on the lecture. |

Riley looked up as the door opened and quite a late arrival to the class turned out to be Tristan. A friendly grin spread across her face as she spotted her best friend yet it drooped when he didn't even look at her and took a seat in the back. Looking at him with confusion and a little hurt, she turned back to the front of the class, eager for it to end so she could talk to him. Had she done something wrong? Had she upset him? And were his cheeks stained with tears? Her focus was now not on the lesson but on what could be the problem between the pair. She looked at the clock, urging it to tick faster and end this torture. |

Tristan didn't even notice Riley look at him as he took his seat, nor as he began to take notes indifferently. He was writing what was on the board but not even registering what it said. All he could think about was Addie and Julian and nothing else was going to penetrate his thoughts for some time. |

Ian did not respond to Tortal's rant on the Ministry, but he did agree slightly. Having both a stepbrother and stepfather that he hated passionately made it quite easy to accept that the Ministry was corrupt, if they could put into their employ such despicable men. Ian did, however, listen more intently after that. Professor Tortal seemed to have spoken something that resonated with Ian. But when Annie Stones, a girl whom Ian only remembered as the one Julian had accosted for being a know-it-all, spoke about the voting wizard community's own responsibility. Ian closed his eyes and tilted his head to the side in a sign of reluctant agreement, though he himself thought it best to keep off that subject now and on the one they were supposed to be learning. Which is why Ian raised his hand and asked: "Are you saying, Professor," he asked, somewhat disbelievingly, "That the brother's sacrifice protected the girl from any further harm? I've never heard of such magic." It was strange idea, that a young boy who probably had only a rudimentary understanding of magic, could create such a powerful protection from a single act. It was also a bit frightening: What else were wizards and witches capable of? But perhaps even more puzzling to Ian was the act of sacrifice itself: Ian wondered whether even his beloved aunt and uncle (who weren't even related to him by blood) would do such a thing for him. And...should Ian feel ashamed that he didn't feel as though anyone he knew was worth sacrificing himself for their sake. Aren't you the heartless bastard, he thought. |

Forcing the issue from her mind until after class, seeing as she could do nothing about it until then, she refocused back on what the Professor had said. Thinking idly, she raised her hand, "But sir, if magic responds to emotions and thoughts, as we know it does, wouldn't that suggest that it is, in fact, a living entity. I mean, rocks and other inanimate object don't respond to such things." She found the notion of magic as living 'being' rather romantic, as though it was some benevolent force watching over all of them. |

"Not to be rude, Riley," Ian said, for once in a tone that was not condescending in the least, "but 'alive'? Does it have to be alive to be sentient? Countless magical artifacts have been found that are sentient, and can think and feel, but aren't alive. Couldn't magic itself be the same?" The reason for Ian's uncharacteristically personable tone was simply an interest in this whole 'magi-philosophy' or whatever one would call it. He'd even speak plainly to a little-miss-know-it-all if the subject actually interested him. |

She turned her attention to Ian, seated several seats to her side, "Name one magical artifact that is truly sentient, Ian? You do know what sentience means, don't you? To be sentient is to be self aware, give me one example of a non-living object that is self aware. Magical artifacts only appear to be sentient because they are imbibed with magic itself. It is not the object that is self-aware but the magic within it." She swept her hair from her face as her passionate rebuttal had caused it to fall in her face. SHe knew she was right and was prepared to debate it. |

Ian realized then his poor choice of words. He replied, still not in his usual sneering tones, but somewhat haughtily nonetheless: "That is...sort of what I mean. My fault," he said, "I was simply trying to make the argument that the choice of the word 'alive' is almost as bad a word choice as the choice of words I made in my previous statement. I'll concede that perhaps it is a 'being', but there are specific rules involved in deciding if something is 'alive'. Thinking and feeling are not enough. Perhaps it just...feels and thinks. Just a sentient entity that is neither good nor evil...like a what muggles call 'gods'...sort of." |

She nodded, albeit not with enthusiasm, "For the most part we agree. Let's leave it at that, or else we're probably going to descend into argument again." Though he wasn't being openly aggressive or rude or arrogant, Riley still distrusted the boy who caused Tristan so many problems. It seemed that Tristan was the source of many of her feelings towards people, her friend having so many enemies. She flicked her eyes back towards him, noting that he was still just staring at the desk. |
