Read Today's Daily Prophet: Knights of Walpurgis attack Hogwarts; Belleford steps down as Hogwarts closes until further notice
Welcome to Hogwarts Interactive Role Play, one of the net's best in Harry Potter and Hogwarts role plays. We hope you enjoy your visit.

Here at Hogwarts our students are currently in their Seventh Year. Last year, the war against the Knights crescendoed into a direct attack against the school. Disappearances are still reported (or not) daily, and the Dark Lord and his Knights of Walpurgis have succeeded in spreading their message of "do as thou will" far and wide across the globe. Magical Law Enforcement, which is now the only authority in the wizarding world under Martial Law, has responded by tightening security, controlling the media, and strictly enforcing curfews and other laws. Their control is damaging to the people's freedom, and their hierarchy is a suspicious lot. It is clear that some members of the MLE like their new found power a bit too much, others see it necessary, but all are in serious danger of being consumed by it. But with the picture of just what Azariah Amaranth is after becoming ever clearer, and a third player in the form of a group called SAVIOR entering the scene, what will the MLE do next to ensure that they've got the situation under control?

The Elementium, the Higher Plane that had once been hidden just beyond the veil in the Department of Mysteries, and the Deathly Hallows. The pieces of the puzzle have been identified, but what picture do they make?

Today is Day 1 of Year Seven. Students have had time to recover from the Knight's attack, and are beginning to reluctantly return to the walls of Hogwarts. The safety of the school has been diminished, bringing up the question everyone must ask. Are you safe anywhere these days? It's up to each individual to decide their fate, where will you decide to go?

Sean entered the Magical Concepts Room and sat at a desk in the center of the room, waiting for Professor Tortal to enter and write the lesson. He got out a book and his wand and pointed it at it. "Incendio." The book burst into flames and he chuckled silently. He let it burn for a while, and, after it nearly died out, pointed his wand at it. "Aguamenti." Water shot slowly from his wand and splurged on the desk, extinguishing the fire. He looked at the door and awaited the entry of another student or Professor.

Charles entered the classroom in a rush and frowned as he was greeted by the odor of smoke and extinguished fire. He shook his head with a bit of disbelief as he dropped his possessions on his desk in a disordered fashion before turning to the board with his wand drawn.

Good afternoon, students. Today we will be learning about the general theory behind magic; what makes it tick, what makes it an essential part to our daily lives. To begin, I want you to name several things that you know that magic can do and list a couple examples. You may begin whenever you see appropriate. Best answers will get house points, so write with detail.

Pocketing his wand and turning back to the class, he shook his head at Sean. I don't want to remove points from my own house, Mr. Laxmont. Don't do it again.

Riley entered Magical Concepts.

Riley took a seat closer to the back than normal as Professor Tortal was one she was a little scared of. By now the effects of the Cheering Charm had worn off but she was feeling content all the same. Curious to see what they'd be learning today, she read the blackboard eagerly. She dipped her quill into ink and began to write:

Magic is to wizards as science is to muggles. It is the means by which wizards do anything from turning on a light to cooking dinner to growing ones toenails. It is an unseen and unknown force that touches everyone in different ways, succumbing to each person's will differently. Some have considerable control over magic whilst others have little if any control eg. a squib is a person of wizarding lineage but with no ability to control magic.

Magic can do several things:
- charm an object to behave in a way not typical of the object eg. one can charm a badger to change colour
- transfigure objects to take the physical appearance and qualities of another object eg. transfiguring a rabbit into a turtle
- create bolts/jets of pure magical energy to either attack or defend against another magical attack
- conjure objects from nothingness eg. ropes
- vanish objects back into nothingness eg. extra potion

It is these forms that comprise magic and its forms and so those which we learn to master.

Riley read over her work, reasonably pleased with her answers. However, she did not volunteer them as the assignment was rather vague and she didn't want to advertise the fact that she had finished, lest Professor Tortal target her and show that she had misunderstood the question.

Annie sighed while entering and wrote an essay, wanting to show her meanings about magic while still doing the question.

Magic is a blessing as well as a curse. While most people cherish their magic blood and extra skills, others would happily swap life with a muggle. The magic gives us huge responsibility, as we are not meant to misuse it. Still, rules are to be broken, are they not?

Some sorts of magic are limited to only a few, elemental control and seer abilities are of this. This type of magic is the most blessed and cursed. Seers, for example, rarely have control over their abilities, which makes them vulnerable to the least. A seer will most probably live a chaotic life.

Magic is also used for everyday things, and to alter things true nature. It is therefore possible to call magic for manipulation of the highest degree, but people dismiss this thought, wanting to seem more good hearted.

Because of magic, people often tend to power-lust, meaning the power is rightful them because of the 'gift'. Some people go to the extreme, meaning only the magical kind is 'correct', this sight is the base of most pure-blood fanatics. These thoughts are highly discriminating, but they will often seem 'correct' and 'agreeable'.

Magic in its self is a weird thing, and it is weird that there is not used resources of a high degree to figure out more of it. Nobody truly knows where our magic comes from, or why only limited amounts of persons know it. Still, who are we, only lesser humans, to wonder?

Annie took it up and gave it to the professor, she really hoped he had a wide sight of toleration, as some people could get hurt by Annie's written down words, still Annie knew each printed down word was true.

Sean nodded solemnly and pushed the ashes to the corner of his desk, getting out a piece of parchment and a quill. He re-read the assignment on the board and nodded to himself, looking at his blank paper. He began writing:

Magic:

Magic is a word that evokes all sorts of things from various people. Depending on the context and moment the word can elicit various responses in a single person. This is a fundamental principle in magic known as symbology. A symbol is associated with a concept and is used to help bring the mind into subtle focus.

Magic is a symbol. It is a trick. If we understand the concept behind the symbol we learn how to operate the trick. The husk of mystery and illusions is removed and we are left with the fruit, knowledge. This knowledge is the power to work what is most profanely considered magic. If we have the knowledge all the tricks and illusions may fade into unimportance and we are left with the real. If we lean simply the mechanisms of the tricks and illusions we might by the illusion and are powerless. This is why a firm grounding in magical theory is important.

If one understands magical theory and has an accompanying pragmatic knowledge bas one can usually synthesis knowledge and through inspiration figure out new techniques with little information and at times independently. This helps prevent foolish questions as does responsible thorough study and practice.

Examples of Magic include
1. Transfiguration: Turning an animate or inanimate object into something else. An example would be the Aranea spell. This spell turns a small object into a spider.

2. Curses: Curses, considered "Black Magic" by muggles, are spells that are used to harm another. A fine example would be the curse that is Razorus. This spell is used to wish harm on another by cutting them up with various conjured blades.

3. Hexes: A hex is a spell with no particular "category". Hexes are mainly used to play jokes on another, such as the Bat Bogey Hex, which turns all of the target's bogeys... to bats.

4. Jinxes: Jinxes are spells that can be offensive and defensive at the same time. On one hand, they can turn your opponent's legs to jelly, like the Gelati Jelly Legs spell, and protect you from your opponent if they try to attack you, the Flipendo Knock-back jinx.

5. Charms: Charms are spells that have a tender meaningness to them, which are used for good reasons and are considered white magic by muggles. A fine example of a charm would be Occaeco, the Telekinesis charm. It controls the target over a set distance. The stronger the spell, the farther its range and the longer its duration.

He stood and looked around. Everyone was too ashamed to turn in their writing. The only one who'd actually turned theirs in was a Ravenclaw, whom he saw was ashamed as well. He took a step towards the Professor and placed it on his desk, only after writing his name, Sean Laxmont. He took his seat back at his desk and waited for the Professor to continue.

Ella walked into the Magical Concepts classroom and sat down. He eyes scanned the board quickly, and after she had read it the slytherin wrinkled her nose in distaste-she was hoping for something more interresting than notes.

But, nevertheless, she took out her quill and set to writting.

Magic is anything having to do with the abilities of witches, wizards, magical or dark creatures. Some examples of types of magic are transfiguration (conjuring/dissappearing/turning one thing into something else) potions (using magical ingrediants to make potions, draughts, etc) or divination (fortelling the future)....

She paused, glancing out of a window with the top of her quill at the tip of her mouth, as she thought about what to write next.

Savannah hastily made her way to class. .
Before entering the room, Savannah quickly jotted down the reason for her tardiness to leave on the professor's desk.
Savannah quietly and politely took a seat near the door and did her best to catch up.

Sean looked at the girl, who wrote for a short while, then looked dreamily out the window, holding her quill curiously. He then stared at the Ravenclaw, whom he supposed was with the boy named Tristan, and followed him where he had run. He shook his head and waited for the Professor to continue. "Professor, I'd like you to go into this. Magical theory is absolutely fascinating. Erm... I'd love for you to go into this, like, immediately. It seems so interesting." He really wanted to go into the subject, but seeing as most people would think he was "kissing up", he glared at them all to show he was serious. He looked back at the Professor and continued. "Please go on Professor. Excuse my interruption." He nodded and took out his quill, which had the feather of his black owl Den, which was adorned with a hippogriff talon tip, covered in Slytherin Green ink.

He pulled the red satin handkerchief from his pocket and looked at it, careful that he didn't show it to anyone, because they would see it as a sign of weakness. He thought to himself. Mother, when you were alive, you gave me everything that I ever wished for, but since you died my life has been full of despair, an empty void that cannot be filled. It made me who I am today, who I aspire to be, and who I will be. You may think that your being killed devastated me and sent me into a spiral of despair and agony with no return, but it was quite the opposite. It made me who I aspired to be and will be. I am going to avenge you, mother, and I will kill the one who killed you. Working for the ministry like father is not for me, I shall do as I desire and shan't do what I shun. He grinned maliciously, but his mouth didn't move, only but slightly.

He put the handkerchief away and fixated his hair. He shook his head to let it down a little, and then looked again at the girl who had entered. She was part Veela, he could tell. Her somewhat "stunning" features, as he didn't want to flatter her, her face that showed that she looked like a tramp. He smirked and looked at the Professor again.

Savannah tried to see what everyone was doing - but couldn't get a good view at the board...
She noticed a guy in Slytherin starring at her. She wanted to respond
What are you looking at punk? but decided against it since she was already pretty rude showing up late.

Excellent, excellent... Charles thought, reading over the Slytherin boy's work for the third time. The information included was well thought out and there wasn't any sort of mistake in grammar - something that Charles appreciated. He was about to space out for a moment to think deeply, but he was snapped back to reality by the sudden and unexpected cry out from the students sitting impatiently in their seats. His head shot up and looked to where the voice came from. Nodding, pushing himself up from his seat, he began the entirety of his lesson. Of course, of course. I was just reading over your paper, Mr. Laxmont. Excellent work - 10 points to Slytherin, he said, glancing back at the board for a brief two seconds. As you probably all know, magic is as if a heavenly entity that has never been truly understood. My job with this lesson, and several lessons after this, is to help you understand more about this magic that surrounds everyone in one way or another.

Charles paused and closed his eyes for a few moments, folding his hands behind his back. Finding himself thinking of a good example, he smirked and then took his right hand out and held his palm out. He conjured energy and focussed it into the center of his palm which in turn made the air colder around him. Soon enough, a ball of flame ignited which danced back and forth in his hand. Nodding and hoping for all students to see, he continued. All elements of nature are affected one way or another by magic; whether it is edited directly by pure magical energy, or changed indirectly as if a plant-hybrid would. But how is not something all wizards can comprehend. There had been a few theories, but many of them are controversial.

Closing his palm, the fire was extinguished. He continued, What many of the theories all include is that every single thing on the planet has some sort of connection to the entity that is magic. Whether it is incredibly strong, as seen in house elves, or almost non existent as seen in muggles.

Sniffing, Charles rolled his head around his shoulders to make his neck pop multiple times. As it concluded, he continued. The main ingredient behind making magic work is motivation! Without motivation, no spell that you could ever conjure could work. As seen in the Unforgivable Curse, Crucio, the caster must feel complete hate towards the victim. Otherwise, the spell wouldn't be painful whatsoever.

Ian entered the classroom, late for the second class in a row. He was having a rather...well...boring chat with Natalie--and infuriating at that, for she seemed to find his frustration at that cow Lola Dior something humorous--but he still found himself late getting up out of dungeons to his next class. It seemed that chatting with pretty girls has caused him nothing but problems this year.

--wait! Did I just think of Lola as pretty?

Ian wiped his mind of such thoughts as he sat down beside Sean, a boy he hadn't talked to, but as he was the only male Slytherin in the room, he thought it only proper.

"Sorry I'm late," he said, "...sincerely, this time." he said with a haughty smile, hoping his fellow Slytherins would get his joke--a reference to his quip in Transfiguration earlier today.

Sean nodded. He liked how the Professor added the example of the Cruciatus Curse. Complete hatred. Excellent. I shan't cast it in front of the Professor, though. He'll have my head. I wouldn't push it, as I'd already gotten on his good side. He nodded at the Professor's explanation. "I see. So, Professor, without motivation and true belief in what you're casting, spells are merely latin or greek words twisted? Erm... Professor, there's one thing I don't understand at this point. If witches and wizards are the beings that use magic most, then how can they not comprehend it? It's illogical that the beings that use the entity most often are the ones that cannot comprehend its powers." He knew this was quite the paradox, something that he could not solve and hoped the Professor could answer.

He looked befuddled, and deeply thought about it. With wizard-folk being the ones that use magic most often, would it not be logical that they are the only ones that should understand it? It makes no sense whatsoever. If this entity is so powerful, then no one who cannot understand it should be able to practise it. Sean looked at the Slytherin boy who'd entered just now. "Hello. Sean. Pleasure to meet you." He said this quietly, not wanting to interrupt the Professor's lecture. Magical Theory got him completely enthralled and involved in the process of understanding the magical ways. If he could understand this, this complex thing, he could probably understand the theories that lie behind the universe! He remained calm at this thought, though, not wanting to seem to eager. He didn't want to make a bad impression on the boy sitting next to him.

He smirked as the Professor explained how small the magic gene is in Muggles. He knew muggle-borns were no good to society. Purebloods were the future of wizardry. Half-bloods were... satiable, but mudbloods were nothing in this world, especially if they showed no magical prowess. He smirked. He knew he could tell what kind of blood people were just by their personality and looks. Especially manners. He yawned and focused on what the Professor was going to say next, but keeping an ear open to hear the Slytherin boy's response.

Very good question. 2 points to Slytherin, Charles smiled, nodding again. He thought for a moment or two before continuing. Magic was mostly discovered by witches and wizards on accident way back before the BC to AD change on the muggle calender. Once we discovered the magical prowess that we did have, we relied on the more advanced magical creatures that were friendly towards us: Goblins, Elves, etc. They taught us the concepts of how to use the magic, but not the background behind the entire thing. Some elders back in that time doubted that these creatures didn't even know themselves, which is why they haven't explained to this day, Charles lectured. So we wizards and witches took the concepts from the creatures of that time and we eventually outnumbered them. There were wars and conflicts, and we pushed out on top. Elves were cast into slavery because they were considered 10x more powerful in magic ability than us, and Goblins stopped learning about magic at all. Because we stole from the other races, that is why we're hated worldwide by creatures of all kinds.

He nodded and folded his hands behind his back. Many very talented wizards and witches spend a lot of their time trying to come up with ideals, but many of them are cast down because of controversy.

Charles looked at the late Ravenclaw and shrugged. That is a matter of opinion, and has been discussed many times. No one is sure, but it can be considered an actual living thing.

"Ian de Ponte du Lac, of the French de Ponte du Lacs," said Ian, "--A pureblood family, I assure you," he added with another haughty smile.

They Slytherin boy seemed all right to Ian, but something about the way he was trying so hard to get on the Professor's good side irked him--it reminded him of someone he hated.

"Oh--" he said after a moment, his smile becoming a condescending smirk, "And I'd advise against being such a kiss ass, else you remind me of my brown-nosing elder brother, smarmy little suck-up git that he is..."

((OOC: Tortal, I'm giving you an opportunity to use your knowing Ian's brother to ridicule Ian, like you said you'd do...))

Sean nodded to the Professor and spoke to Ian from the side of his mouth. "I'm not kissing up," he said reassuringly, "This is a very interesting subject." He turned to the Professor and spoke. "Professor, since we've stolen from the other breeds, would that make house elves higher spellcasters than we are? And, is that the situation in the Forest's cause? Magic? Or is it something else?" He took thorough notes of the Professor's words.

Magical history is not understood by wizards. They stumbled upon during the BC to AD time change on the Muggle calendar. Magic was stolen from other species. We eventually outnumbered them and waged war. Sean rose his hand eagerly. "If elves are ten times as powerful with magic as wizards, how are they considered lesser breeds? And what was the war between the species named? For referance, of course." He began writing on his parchment once more. Witches and wizards have pondered the theory of magic, as it hasn't been thoroughly explained by anyone or thing.

He nodded at his parchment and looked at the Professor for more information. Whispering to Ian, he said, "Pureblood? I think we'll be good... acquaintances." He waited for the Professor to continue talking, wishing to write more notes.

Oh dear, Mr. Ponte du lac. Are you sure you want to be talking trash about Alphonse? He, as compared to you, has already surpassed your abilities at least sevenfold! I suppose that being a kiss ass got him there as well, but having an extra interest in certain classes will definitely help to get your magical ability more skilled! Charles ridiculed, smirking at Ian. Tilting his head to the side and then taking a breath, he nodded. Mr. Laxmont, we made the elves an inferior race simply because they are more powerful than us in magical ability. We enslave them so they won't revolt. The situation in the forest was caused because of the Ministry and some new law they enforced with half breeds. The centaurs do not like it... Charles paused and listened to more questions from Sean. He sighed, but appreciated the want for learning that the Slytherin had. The war was nicknamed the Fight For Freedom by the Elves and was just called the Five Year War by wizards. It isn't really important information, in my opinion. It just showed that Elves really didn't have a backbone...

Tristan entered the classroom quietly and took a seat near the back, not wanting to get involved with the class but knowing he'd be in trouble if he missed it. He began to take down the notes wordlessly, for once not bothering to volunteer an answer. He noted with relief that Julian had not shown up as he had a habit of doing. Hopefully the Slytherin who had ruined him would remain absent.
