Welcome to Hogwarts Interactive Role Play, one of the net's best in Harry Potter and Hogwarts role plays. We hope you enjoy your visit.

Here at Hogwarts our students are currently in their Seventh Year. Last year, the war against the Knights crescendoed into a direct attack against the school. Disappearances are still reported (or not) daily, and the Dark Lord and his Knights of Walpurgis have succeeded in spreading their message of "do as thou will" far and wide across the globe. Magical Law Enforcement, which is now the only authority in the wizarding world under Martial Law, has responded by tightening security, controlling the media, and strictly enforcing curfews and other laws. Their control is damaging to the people's freedom, and their hierarchy is a suspicious lot. It is clear that some members of the MLE like their new found power a bit too much, others see it necessary, but all are in serious danger of being consumed by it. But with the picture of just what Azariah Amaranth is after becoming ever clearer, and a third player in the form of a group called SAVIOR entering the scene, what will the MLE do next to ensure that they've got the situation under control?

The Elementium, the Higher Plane that had once been hidden just beyond the veil in the Department of Mysteries, and the Deathly Hallows. The pieces of the puzzle have been identified, but what picture do they make?

Today is Day 1 of Year Seven. Students have had time to recover from the Knight's attack, and are beginning to reluctantly return to the walls of Hogwarts. The safety of the school has been diminished, bringing up the question everyone must ask. Are you safe anywhere these days? It's up to each individual to decide their fate, where will you decide to go?

Charles tossed his hat onto his desk as if it were a Frisbee and tossed his coat on the back of his chair as he entered the classroom. He wanted to jam as much into the third years' heads as possible before the period ended. The amount of time specified was cut short due to his tardiness. His wand shot from his sleeve into his hand before he flicked the piece of wood at the board in a hurried manner.

<div align=center>Good day, students. I'm sure that you all are quite disappointed that you must spend an entire period with me, but that's beside the point. I will be teaching you throughout your entire time in this class and I can ensure that you will learn much. I will end my rambling on that note.

To begin, I want you to tell me all you know about one of these topics:
  • Magics that can protect you from the elements of nature such as fire, water, etc.

    Dementors and Lethifolds.

    The physics of light.

The mindset of certain magical plants. (Pick one that you know.)

Compounds; Ionic bonds and Covalent bonds / How atoms combine.

    What causes earthquakes.
I will award housepoints to those that can answer first about one of these subjects. You may answer them on a piece of parchment if you wish to answer some that weren't after class begins.</div>

Ian entered the classroom apprehensively. Professor Tortal gave him the willies, to be honest.

Sitting down, he glanced at the board. Having an ex-Auror for a stepfather meant he knew quite a bit about dark creatures like Dementors and Lethifolds. Know what he knew, he decided it would be selfish to not use his knowledge to net Slytherin some points (they were already behind), so he raised his hand.

"D-Dementors..." he stuttered. Like stated before, Professor Tortal gave Ian the willies for some reason--something just wasn't right about him--so talking to him for the first time was intimidating. "Dementors are cloaked creatures that feed upon human souls," he began with more confidence, determined not to show fear or weakness, "When one is around, the air around grows cold and it gets dark, and they cause a sense of despair in all sentient creatures near them. Muggles can't see dementors, so when one is around they just feel realy depressed and don't know why. With their mere presence a constant torture to humans, they make excellent guards of the wizard prison, Azkaban.

"Lethifolds, or living shrouds as they are sometimes called, look a bit like dementors, but are far more dangerous. They live only in the tropics and completely devour sleeping humans, leaving no trace of their victims. The best defense against the both of them is the Patronus Charm, which is a positive force that repels them.

"...my dad used to be an auror," he added.

Satisfied with his answer he looked to see if there were any other questions he could answer for points.

Tristan stepped tentatively inside the classroom and quickly took a seat, not too close to the front nor the back. He made sure he was several seats away from Ian, the Slytherin he was growing to loathe as much as Julian. Reading the blackboard, his forehead creased with confusion: Aren't some of those muggle topics? Why are we learning them? Yet the personality of Professor Tortal was enough to quell any disputes he may have had with the topics and he scanned the list for one he knew enough about.

Tristan raised his hand, forcing himself to remain calm and confident, "I know that earthquakes are caused by the shifting of the Earth's tectonic plates. As two plates converge on each other and grind into each other, that friction causes earthquakes on the surface."

Tristan had attended muggle primary school before being invited to Hogwarts and so knew somewhat about muggle science.

If we see a man glorifying his race, gender, or creed, we can understand there is nothing about himself that deserves glorification.

Hellius sheepishly entered the classroom and read the board lazily. He wanted just to sleep at that particular moment and to do absolutely nothing in the least. Everything was just simply boring at that current moment, and what was beginning seemed like it was simply the tip of the iceburg. Sighing and taking a seat in the middle of the class, he sighed and decided to answer the question about the molecules and atoms. He raised his hand.

"Covalent bonds," he began. "Are formed between 2 or more nonmetals that share electrons. In a chemical formula, covalent bonds use prefixes when naming the elements in the formula." He paused, rubbing his head curiously, trying to remember some of the subjects that his grandma taught him over the summer. "Ionic bonds are formed from a non metal and a metal that transfer electrons to form charged ions. Certain atoms have more or less electrons which determine what they will combine with; they must be able to combine.. 8 electrons, I believe..."

He shrugged and leaned back absently in his seat.

When Amelia entered the room, she noticed that several of her classmates seemed almost scared of the Professor, whom she knew from the scheduelle in her hand was called Professor. Tortal. Did they know something that she didn't?

She read over the board silently, biting her bottom lip. She knew almost nothing about any of those things-at least, she had learned some of them in Muggle School, but she had, for the most part, forgotten them.

The one about plants, however, struck her. After thinking for several minutes, she raised her hand and answered nervously-the looks on the other third-year faces were starting to make her uneasy.

"Sir?.....Devil's Snare, that would have a....er....Dark or Evil mindset, I guess, as it tries to strangle you." she said, hoping that she was at least close to what he was looking for.

Nodding at Ian, Tristan, and Hellius, Charles walked slowly behind his desk and then leaned against the wall there. He was bored waiting for the others to arrive, but it didn't matter in the least to him...

Correct, correct, and correct. 5 points to all 3 of your houses, he said, looking to Ian. I can see the merit, but as long as you have an answer, I don't care where it comes from... unless you cheated. Turning his head towards Tristan, he nodded again. Plate tectonics, quite correct. And then to Hellius. Generally correct, but that topic can be taught in a separate class on it's own.

Hearing another answer, he looked to the girl and nodded slightly. Moderately correct... I suppose I should of made that question a little more clearer... but oh well. 5 points to Hufflepuff as well.

Looking to his watch, he decided to begin despite the absence of the other students inside at that current moment. Pushing himself off the wall and then strolling to the front of the class again, he faced them in an indignant stance and let a smirk curl across his lips.

I'm sure some of you are curious of why I asked a few questions that concerned Muggle education standards... Do any of you have a clue of why I did so?

Tristan shrugged cluelessly but was now no longer confused. Rather, he was intrigued as to where the unusual Professor was heading with this line of questions.

Charles nodded and looked around the class with a bit of disappointment. However, what he was to tell them was something that almost no other teacher had taught due to complications upon complications.

No? So be it, he sighed. Pausing for a moment, he turned back towards the black board and flicked his wand at it. What was written was erased and in its place was a list of different words.
  • Fire:

    Water:

    Air:

    Ground/Rock:

    Shadows:

    Light:

    Plants:

    Molecules:

He turned back towards the class, Fire, Water, Air, Rock, Shadows, Light, Plants, and Molecules. These are all elements of nature around you and with magic we are able to use them to our advantage. Lumos, for example, is a light controlling spell. Aguamenti is a water controlling spell. There is always some sort of magical spell that can, in essence, control one of these elements. Dementors and Lethifolds use the shadow element to their advantage. They are almost as if they are shadows themselves, but more... materialized.

Pausing again, he looked over the class and nodded, awaiting questions or comments.

His hand was half raised, not wanting to ask yet unable to help himself, "....so what are we learning then? I don't quite get what your telling us. Are you saying magic can manipulate things like molecules and shadows and such?" This was definitely beyond the range of typical magic they had so far been forced to learn. He could tell that this was going somewhere that would result in more than just learning a new spell to make someone's ears vanish.

Julian entered the class and took a seat behind Ian, a fellow Slytherin he was still unsure about but given the others in the room it was the most approrpriate. He leaned back in his seat and folded his arms, scanning through the board with a blank expression whilst his mind raced to decipher what they were going to be learning.

The Professor was one he had encountered before, a wizard of obvious power yet Julian was unsure of his persona. He cound not decide whether he was a typical, do-gooder adult or whether there was something more sinister beneath the handsome face.

Magic can manipulate molecules, shadows, and the other different elements of nature around us. There is a special thing to call this and I doubt that any of you have ever heard of the concept before, Charles said back to Tristan.

The memories of the training he himself had received came flooding back into his mind, and in a split second his mind was focussed on what his teacher had taught him. Taking a deep breath, he nodded, and looked over the classroom. Some students seemed to be asleep while others were a little more intent on listening.

Element controlling, Mr. Nightshade, is what I am teaching you. This is a type of magic that is frowned upon by the Ministry because of the corruption that can come with the abilities. I could get fired for teaching you, or I could be promoted for... something, but this is something that you will want to know about if you want to do some extraordinary things.

Charles turned back towards the board and flicked his wand at it again.

Fire: Control everything and anything that's fire to how you see fit. Change the temperature, shape, and size. Snap your fingers and set things aflame. (Great for 12 year old boys and up.)

Water: Control water to how you see appropriate. Conjure it from anywhere and guarantee that you will never go thirsty.

Air: Create wind and summon tornadoes. You can make gales that would rival Hurricanes.

Ground/Rock: Create landmasses and conjure earthquakes.

Shadows: They're everywhere, they're black as night, and they create senses of fear in the hearts of children. Shrouded in mystery, those that control shadows must give up life energy to make their dark entities. There are rumored methods to reverse the effect, but the shadow controller must be quite skilled.

Light: The life giving force in the universe. Without it, we'd all... die. Change this life giving force into a deadly weapon; burn whatever you wish like ants under a magnifying glass, or get rid of all that burning sunlight on a hot summer day.

Plants: Uh... plants - make more, make less, stop global warming, make them eat your enemies. It sorta speaks for itself...

Molecules: Change anything around you! If it has mass, then you can change it's shape, form, weight, and anything about it. (Deadly towards anything that breathes under the sun. Be careful about the changes to someone's anatomy that you may alter.)

The process of controlling these things take complicated steps that is similar to how nature itself works, with a few exceptions, Charles turned back towards the students. Shadows, for example, is not even related to nature. It is a whole different concept with some qualities that are unknown. Many of the shadow controllers die before they even have the chance to help the ministry understand how they work.

He paused again and took a deep breath.

These abilities have a catch, however. They are something you are born with as a metamorphagi would. You have to discover it and then learn to control it which isn't an easy task.

Ian read the board with immense interest, enthralled by the prospect of controlling the very elements that form the world. Granted, water and plant 'bending' seemed a bit useless to Ian, but it would be awesome to control the wind, or fire--imagine the very elements that constitute life at your fingertips! Ian considered all this in a state of awe and wonder that spread across his face at the thought of such power.

His hand shot up quickly--something he had never, ever done in a class-- about to ask how learning the amazing power can be achieved; however, Professor Tortal did not seem to notice, because he had already gone into further explanation of element bending--an explanation which made Ian's excited state of interest evaporate like so much water: You had to be born with the power, like a metamorphamagus. His hand lowered, and his face straightened, slightly disappointed that was all there was to it.

He whispered to Julian, who had just sat beside him, "Well...Professor Tortal now holds the record for catching, then immediately losing my interest," he said, rocking his chair on its two back legs and his arms behind his head.

Tristan listened with fascination at the idea that someone could essentially manipulate the world around them. Fire, water and air seemed fairly straight forward as there was plenty of magic commonly used that did such things, yet shadows, molecules and light.....waaay interesting

A thought occurred to him, "Would a practitioner have to use their wand to do these things? Or is it just internal?"

It can go either way, Mr. Nightshade. As the use of the wand is for we humans for a multiplier of our magical abilities, some people can grow in the ability with the elements to the point of where they wouldn't need a wand. This could even be seen with a squib, who has absolutely no magical ability whatsoever, Charles said, dismissing the hand that he saw from Ian that was soon lowered.

So... House Elves could also use the Element controlling ability. This is another reason why the Ministry keeps such solid holds on them; one goes berserk... and there's gonna be some trouble. They are at least 10x more powerful in magical ability than the average wizard. But that's enough with them... he looked over the class and nodded. The chances of people being elemental controllers are 1 in 50. If there are 5000 students in the third year right now, there are 100 people that have the ability to control one part of nature. I want to help you discover your ability if you may have it, but the process is extremely time consuming.

Looking around again before turning back towards his desk and taking a seat in his chair, Charles soon kicked his feet onto his desk and rested his hands behind his head as if they were a pillow.

The general trigger to use the abilities is with complete mental focus, or with emotional out spurt. Fire would need a more... stubborn emotion that's constant. Water would need calmness in mind and spirit. Air would need to be kind and giving. Earth would need an abrasive attitude. Light would need a lively and upbeat attitude. Shadows would need something that's sadistic and destructive. Molecules would need vigorousness, but more mental focus than anything else. Sometimes the personality of the controller reflects what element they control. But... its more or less a matter of luck.

OOC: Pretending I was present the whole time.

Riley was seated beside Tristan.

BIC: Riley raised her hand and spoke, not waiting to be called upon, "But sir, aren't there alot of dangers associated with such magic? I mean, if the Ministry doesn't approve it being taught, why do you feel the need to teach us it?" It was quite rare for Riley ro avoid learning anything, also to go against a Professor, yet something just didn't well with her about helping psychopaths like Julian and his friends to tap hidden powers that could prove deadly.

What the Ministry doesn't know won't hurt them. Besides... they simply frown upon the teaching; what comes with the element controlling technique is power and possible corruption. They don't want to see the prosperous magical community to crumble to war-filled propaganda. That wouldn't be good for the selfish p--- Charles cut himself off before he went too far. Clearing his throat and running his hand through his hair, he looked back up at the girl. This is one of the various techniques that could help make many of you, he paused, exchanging glances throughout the classroom. Become successful in magical ability. Don't you find it interesting that you could learn concepts that many before you have not?

Riley could feel herself blushing slightly at being put on the spot, "Well of course I find it all incredibly fascinating but there are..." she searched for the most appropriate words to describe her feelings, "certain people who might use such power for the uses you just described. I won't name names." Yet she knew everybody in the room, Julian included, would know who she meant.

Only certain people are born with the controlling abilities. If someone maniacal is born with it, then they will do what they need to in order to accomplish their goals. That would be their fault, but I don't see the need to disable the teachings of this wondrous thing to possible aurors! That's almost as if you intentionally break off your dad's arm to try and beat him in a race. His arm would be gone, but he'd still be able to run, Charles said meticulously. I can understand where your concern is coming from, but not everyone that can obtain this would use it for all the wrong reasons.

Julian flashed an arrogant smirk towards Riley, "Your not suggesting what I think your suggesting, are you Riley? Surely no one in this class would abuse their powers. I mean, maybe Tristan here might occasionally use it to fool girls into thinking he's got a pair, but other than that I'd say no one would."

He was lying through his teeth: given half the chance, Julian knew he'd obliterate all those he could if he had such power as to manipulate molecules or shadows.

Julian looked back towards the Professor, "Professor Tortal, perhaps Riley needs to leave this class and not be given the chance to learn such concepts if she's going to insult people and interrupt our learning."

Julian bared his teeth back at Riley, his superior smirk once again antagonising the Ravenclaw know-it-all.

Perhaps, but she has yet to show any sort of proof that she is able to use the ability at all, Mr. Kahn, Charles retorted. Pausing for a moment, he returned glances between Riley and Julian. If someone may abuse the power, that would simply be another reasonable meaning to kill a useless body.

He looked over the class and quirked his eyebrows. Moving on.

Standing from his seat once again, Charles' wand flew from his sleeve and into his hand once again. He turned towards the wall near the door and then tapped the stone a few times. The stones up and down the class began to collapse into each other and change shape throughout the entire area. Soon enough, the classroom was shaped almost like a giant basin with a few different distinguishing additions. Where the black board used to be, a waterfall-like contraption came from the wall. The water the fell down from the hole into a drain that was now below it. To the left side of the class was a few different pieces of fauna. The desks, which were pulled back to make more room, had small torches on each one of them. A giant boulder replaced where Charles' desk was, and in all, the room looked a little insane.

Charles was off to the side now and away from he last was. He was standing on what seemed the only piece of normal classroom inside. His arms were behind his back and he was staring up at the students with a glint in his eye.

I want you all to go to each station and test them. Do what you may to try and experiment, but know that it probably won't happen on the first try. Use your wands, and I will observe.
