It was a beautiful day in Hogsmeade, much too nice to be inside. But, Willow had been given the task of setting up the Three Broomsticks for a get together of parents, students and staff. So, with the help of the barkeep, the Professor made ready for the large group that she hoped would arrive. She busied herself by setting up each of the tables with decorations and party favors. Then, Professor Ashebrook conjured a dazzling light display of various colored fire sparks that danced and whizzed every which way on the flat cieling. Finally, she added what she considered the last touches, like welcoming banners on the wall espousing the virtues of each house the students would be sorted into once the year began. This was the first time that Hogwarts had hosted anything away from the castle; and the first time that they had put on this type of gathering. So, she checked and re-checked all of her preparations three and four times over to make sure that everything was perfect. Willow wanted every student to feel welcomed and at ease with the professors before the start of term. And after all that had happened in the not so distant past, she and the rest of the professors felt it important that the parents too were made to feel comfortable with leaving their children at the school. Once she was certain that she could primp and perfect her area no further, the woman smiled & thanked the barkeep before making her way to the door and toward the other locations that had been chosen to house more families for the 'shindig' the school was hosting. As she began walking to the next building, Professor Ashebrook waved her wand, causing more decorations to bloom in her wake. There was still a lot to do before she manned the door to the Three Broomsticks in order to welcome those due to start arriving in just a couple more hours. |

She'd darkened her eyes with charcoal coloured eyeliner and eye shadow, the gothic look only half attempted on her pale face. With a potion she'd bought from Diagon Alley during the summer, she straightened her hair so that the usually brunette hair, now almost black, hung in one long thick silky veil down her back and over her shoulders. She'd grown out her fringe, the new style, darker and longer, made her feel more grown up. Of course, after the past few years she had, had, it was no wonder that a maturity had set in. A slow burning one, for she still felt some of the old fire sparkle inside her like a promise for something better. She had missed Maddie, this gathering would bring them back together before term started again and she was looking forward that. More so that the party itself. As punishment, for the duel she'd gotten herself in at the end of last term, Mia was being forced to arrive early to help set up the party before the doors opened in a few hours. She wasn't exactly sure what she was supposed to do, since she wasn't allowed to use magic until Hogwarts was open again and manual labour wasn't really her scene but all the same, makeup and hair done. Short black dress that reached just above her knees and her dark green hooded cloak, Mia Lamond pulled the bag of floo powder from her ill-packed school bag, thrust a handful into the flames that had been burning in the grate for over an hour, making the small room in the Leaky Cauldron stifling and stepped in, shouting her destination over the stream of smoke that engulfed her as soon as she had stood in the fireplace. "The Three Broomsticks. Hogsmeade." In a blur of green, and various colours from fireplaces all around the country, Mia finally tumbled out of a backroom in the pub. It felt strange to be back in Hogsmeade but anticipating bubbled inside her more than anything else. Who would come back tonight? When she stepped out into the cheerily decorated pub she wrinkled her nose in disgust but muttered moodily over the chatter of the barkeeper and one of the barmaids to get the attention of her Headmistresses. "Professor Ashebrook... I'm here to help." |

Willow had returned from some of the other shops in Hogsmeade that were also contributing to the party being hosted by Hogwarts. Honeydukes, for example, had put together a few special items to be awarded to some of the students from the visiting school -much like the 'door prizes' of the muggle world- along with coupons to save on future purchases (another idea taken from the non-magic folk). Her hair falling out of it's once neat ponytail, Professor Ashebrook hustled in to the Three Broomsticks. Her helper was supposed to have arrived much earlier in the evening. It seemed as though the young girls' punishment would instead have to be carried over once the term began. I supposed we could have her polish all of the silver in the kitchen by hand, thought Willow before she was pulled from her reverie at the sound of a young girl uttering her name. "Oh! There you are," she said cheerily. "I'm glad you made it. I was beginning to think you weren't going to show." Willow knew this young girl to be high spirited. In fact, as she had watched her blossom in her time at the school, that was one of the things that Willow admired about the Slytherin. Smirking, she added "I was just contemplating how you could atone for your failure to appear. Boy did you get lucky!" Turning, Professor Ashebrook gestured for Mia to follow her. The professor began to head to what seemed a small back room in the establishment. However, upon stepping through the doorway, a much larger area was revealed where a couple of bar maids were putting together different trays of appetizers and cold cuts for the soon-to-be-arriving guests. "It would be a great help," said the woman, "if you could assist these other ladies in finishing these trays and setting them out on each of the tables. Some will be put together on the table at the rear of the seating area, but they will guide you as to what goes where." Willow turned and started to head back out to converse with the barkeep before stopping to add, "When you're finished here, let me know and we'll see if there are any other last minute preparations to be done before I dismiss you to an evening of more mischief." She grinned once more and said, "Just try to keep the dueling down to a minimum." Then she was gone, already thinking of a nice glass of mulberry wine and a good book when she could settle down in her room for the night once the festivities had ended. |

There was a familiar tug at her navel as Mohana was pulled through the floo network. Even after all her years doing so, it never ceased to amaze her - seeing the different destination points whiz past her field of vision. It became a game with her to see how many she could actually count (and it was a challenge) before reaching her own stop. "19 ... 20 ... 21" continued the girl. "Ah! Here we are," said Mo to herself as she finally arrived at one of the two networks connected to the Three Broomsticks. Stepping out of the hearth, the young girl dusted a small amount of soot from her clothing and then, inadvertently added a smudge to her left cheek as she made to scratch an itch. Looking around, Mohana was wide-eyed at the room and the decorations. 'That ceiling is brilliant!' she mused silently, admiring the flashes of color dancing across it's plane. Then the new student noticed that she seemed to be the only one there from the school. "Did I arrive too early?" she pondered aloud. Edited by Mohana Darby, Jun 13 2011, 07:19 PM.

"Oh, I shall try to remember my luck when I'm suffering." She mumbled with an edge of sarcasm, jostling the chain of her tiny black bag that hung over her shoulder, before taking it and her cloak off and throwing them over in one of the rare spots of clear bar. She followed the Professor back behind the bar and through to a larger room just past the small dusty room with the fireplace she had emerged from and looked around with distain, realising she had a messy job that would be boring as well. She tried not to whine as she was set to work decorating trays with food, stuffed eggs, sausage rolls, scotch eggs, crisps... Anything that could be considered party food. One of the women nodded her head at two plates of cheese and crackers and asked her to take them out to the large buffet table at the back of the main room. Wiping her hands on the apron she'd been given, Mia groaned a reply before grabbing the dishes, watching the content slide a little before she rightened them and then marched through the door, around the bar and straight to the table. She took her time setting them down on the table and then messing around with the angles, prolonging the moment when she'd have to return to slavery. When finally she could push the matter no longer, the raven haired Slytherin turned and headed back. She almost walked straight into the younger girl but stopped a mere inch away and scowled. "Oi, watch it will you. Got nothing better to be doing than standing around?" She hissed and then looked the girl up and down and scoffed. "First year." She didn't recognise her, Mia knew most people in the school, especially the younger ones. She spent her time tourmenting them, it was only right she would recognise them. Noting the smudge on the girls cheek she wrinkled her nose. "Ew, did you not find it necessary to wash before coming?" She asked haughtily before stepping around the girl with an air of arrogance that she was known best for and returning to the prep-room without a second look. |

Having been facing in the wrong direction, Mohana hadn't seen the older girl at first. But, just as she turned to catch a glimpse of her, smile and extend her hand in greeting, the raven haired girl snapped aggressively at her. Mo stood there for a second, wide eyed and surprised at the harshness when any time now, a party was to begin. The Gryffindor was about to walk away, ignoring the other student completely, when she heard another jeering comment. 'She must be a slytherin', mused Mohana. 'Who else would be so prickly for no reason.' Now ... her parents had taught her better than to get into scuffles. They taught her to turn the other cheek, so to speak. As much as she wanted to follow their advice, and did whenever she could, she was unable to resist. For, the first year had learned long ago that most bullies wouldn't stop until you stood up to them. And though this other girl was bigger than she, Mohana couldn't bring herself to remain silent. "Ew! Did you not find it necessary to get a personality before coming?" retorted Mo, her once happy eyes becoming menacing slits. Turning on her heel, the child made to walk up to the bar, having decided to get an iced butterbeer to help counteract the heat of the day. Self-consciously, she began wiping more thoroughly at her clothes as she walked over. It was only when she was at the bar, a large mirror behind it, that she noticed the smudge across her left cheek. Frowning slightly, the Gryffindor grabbed for a napkin on the bar, licked it and wiped the soot away until the only thing remaining was a red mark from all the rubbing. Willow walked over to have her words with the barkeep about one or two last minute preparations she remembered while giving her helper some other tasks. Just as she was finishing up and walking toward the exit, there was a commotion behind her. Turning, the professor saw two of her students embroiled in a confrontation. To her surprise, this first year didn't seem as shy as the majority of others when it came to dealing with older students, for she held her ground. It seemed, thus far however, that the scuffle was over before it had really begun. Nevertheless, she couldn't in good conscience continue on to other last minute arrangements before she knew that everything here had calmed down. At the same time, she didn't want to interfere just yet. So, Willow instead kept quiet and watched from the door to see how everything worked out. |

Double checking her trunks Payton throws last minute items into them and slams the lid closed. The second year straightens her robs and heads down stairs ready to go. Excitement pumps through her veins, excitement to start a new year and to get away from her darling parents. Hitting the ground floor the young Slytherin walks into her father’s study to see no one there, but a note wishing her a good year. Shaking her head Payton walks over to the book that is to be her way to Hogsmeade. “Should’ve known” she mumbles as she gathers her wits. Placing her hand on the book she sucks in a quick breath and off she goes. Twisting and turning her stomach does flips as she rushes to her destination. With a soft pop she lands neatly in front of the gates of Hogwarts. “Home at last” she breaths as she turns and heads for Hogsmeade. The town looks amazing with welcome banners and decorations scatted all around. Walking slowly to take in the sights Payton heads to the Three Broomsticks to see who else has arrived. Walking into the pub Payton bumps into someone standing in the doorway. “Sorry” she says as she walks around the women taking in all the banners and streams hanging from the ceiling and walls. Turning to women, realizing who she bumped into “Professor the place looks amazing” she says. |

All of her attention having been focused on the two young girls in the bar, Willow hadn't noticed the door opening and another student walking headlong into her. Jumping slightly in surprise, the woman turned in time to see yet another arrival for the evenings' happenings. "Thank you Miss Levin," replied the Professor. "Almost every shoppe has pitched in to make this event special for all of you. So, I hope you'll take time to stop into each one." Willow smiled earnestly at the young slitherin, all the while keeping one ear on any conversation passing between the other two students. For, she still had to make sure all was well before she headed out to finish the last couple of tasks ... and she would need to get to them quickly as it appeared that more guests were arriving every minute now. |

Mohana had stood her ground. Evidently, that was enough, for the older girl side-stepped her to make way back into the kitchen area. Watching as the girl walked by, the younger girl merely shook her head. Grabbing out a few knuts from her pocket, Mo paid for her butterbeer, picked up the glass and moved over to a table. It was then that she noticed another student and her Headmistress hovering near the door and at least one set of eyes upon her. In a polite gesture, the gryffindor gave a smile and nodded in their direction before turning her attention to a few of the poppers scattered about the table in front of her. 'I wonder how long it will be before others begin to arrive. Surely it's getting to be about that time,' she mused while twirling one of the poppers absentmindedly in one hand and lifting her drink to her lips with the other. |

Having finished speaking with the young Slytherin, Headmistress Ashebrook paused to gaze once more at the situation further inside the tavern. However, by the time she looked back again, it seemed as though it was over; the younger girl had moved over to a table by herself. Noticing the child nod in acknowledgement, Wil gave her own friendly nod and smile. "Miss Levin," said the woman, turning toward the girl next to her. "Perhaps you should go introduce yourself to the new first year. Join the girl in snapping a few of those crackers." Again, a smile played at her mouth while addressing the student. "Dont' be shy." With that, Professor Ashebrook took her leave to finish up those little last minute items that kept popping into her head. |

It was still so quiet in the pub. And, while not usually the 'social butterfly' type, the young Gryffindor decided that she should be bold. So, rising from her chair, the girl turned to move toward the door where she'd seen the other student and her Headmaster. After all, it couldn't hurt to get to know the woman who would be responsible for guiding her education. Unfortunately, by the time she gathered her courage to stand up and wander over, Professor Ashebrook had already moved past the other student and out of the pub altogether. Nevertheless, the girl was up now and it would've looked awkward if she'd returned to her chair. Besides, she still wanted someone to talk to. It was just that it would've been easier, for Mohana anyway, if an elder was their to do the introductions. Steeling herself and continuing toward the door, Mo came to a halt a few feet away from the other student. "Hello," she'd said, as cheerfully as she could muster, all the while hoping she hadn't sounded too happy. "Enjoying the festivities?" |
