My 1977 dxa has had this problem since i've owned it. After running the bike, i switch the ignition off and the engine stays running, even with the key out. so to kill the engine i have to stall it.
It's never really bothered me, just one of those " i'll sort it one day" jobs :$ , anyway, today's the day !

So ... i have taken the switch off which is a 10 wire job & am looking to replace it unless i am missing something and the problem is not with the switch at all ??
It would appear that there are pattern ones easily available, or a rather expensive NOS one on ebay @ £150 :'( . Does any body have any ideas as to wether it is likely to be the switch at fault & are the pattern ones any good? if so, who to buy from ?

Seems a shame to lose the original key, although the steering lock is also goosed and needs replacing too.

Any tips or advice gratefully appreciated.
Thanks, Andy :)

As far as I am aware, the only thing that stops the fizzy engine, is grounding the black wire!

Do you think that you have suitable earthing on the switch, to allow the black wire to be grounded in the off position?

Can the steering lock not just be disassembled and repaired?

Or are we talking goosed as in someone with a large screwdriver and hammer!? or just a large screwdriver! or indeed, just a hammer!

The steering lock key, although original & the correct number, (same as ignition) does not turn at all & there is no pin inside the lock to locate into the frame either. (missing)

condition wise it looks ok & does not appear to be butchered at all, so just missing parts. the barrel does not want to slide out either with the key in or out although it does move and is not seized.

any thoughts ?

The switch works in all positions, for lights etc, so i just assumed it got its earth from the connection via the headlamp bowl fixing bolt and earthing was ok.
Good point though chas, i will investigate the earth further as i hadn't given it a second thought.

Everything else works 100% on the bike which was 1 owner before me. It has never been altered or messed about with & everything is original.

Thanks Chas, you put me on the right path & got me looking at wiring connections rather than just replacing expensive parts........... ignition switch now working! :)

It turned out to be a loose connection in the battery box that I investigated having read an old post from mech73 dating back to 2009!

quote: The ignition switch works by shorting the lead between the generator and top coil to earth. The wire between the switch and the coil/generator is normally black/white and the connection is in the battery box.

fantastic, as I get to keep the original key. :D
