I'll check the engine out again... I would still like to know how the bore is measured to get the piston size. |

Sorry with the late reply. Piston ring end gap- 0.006in (0.15mm) to 0.014in (0.35mm) Use the piston to push the ring in square, close to the top will be most worn. You need some end gap for obvious reasons but more than the max will show well worn rings or bore. I once had a diesel Golf rebored; the engineering shop supplied the pistons with rings fitted. Young and foolish I just fitted the pistons. It would start on a tow when cold. When I eventually stripped it you could have measured the ring gap with the peak of your cap. Hard lesson learned! |

The bore is measured with a micrometer but unless you are into engineering you’re not likely to have one. Measuring the end gap is always recommended. Assuming the piston is correct; it should be a neat fit. Standard rings in a rebored barrel will have a very large end gap. If your piston is oversize it should have something like 0.25 or 0.50 stamped on the piston. ![]() Outer, inner and depth micrometer Edited by ballintur, Mar 18 2010, 09:16 AM.
