just tried to start my bike after rebuild great spark but not getting any fuel at the plug? Carb is filling up great and all the jets are clear. even tried it with the casing and all the seals on. I have also changed the carb gasket (the round one that grips the casing) i have also checked that i put the disc on write.....anyone got any ideas?????? |

I`d put a bit of premix down the plug to encourage it. Is the plug completely dry??? |

i don't think its the fuel.....could be the disc on the crank. Haynes manual says to line the two marks on the disc up with the dowel in the crank (which i did). This will put the crank at b.d.c when the marks line up with the carb hole...if i put the two marks at the opposite end of the dowel (180deg) it will put the crank at tdc when the marks line up with carb hole. Looking at the picture (haynes) when the dowel is at the carb hole the crank would be at t.d.c. Do i ignore what the manual says (strip my bloody engine down again ) and swop it over and persume the two marks actually mean t.d.c.????????????????HELP?????????????????????![]() ![]() ![]()

Before you strip it down again. Hold the throttle wide open and shine a torch down the inlet. You can then see when the disc valve is opening and closing relative to b.d.c. and t.d.c. The exact disc valve timing information is on here somewhere, but approximately it should start to open soon after b.d.c, be fully open as the piston rises and then close just after t.d.c. |

A simple check is to remove the spark plug to make it easy to crank. Put the palm of your hand over the carb with the throttle open. Crank the engine and you should feel a draw on your hand. This helped me many times with engines that had been laid up for a while. Creates very rich condition. Is the throttle cable is connected ok? the slide lifts when you twist the throttle. |

checked the disc timing and it is okay. Opens just after b.d.c and is fully open all the way up to t.d.c, then closes just after t.d.c. It must then be a fuel problem as the plug is still dry? I have put some fuel in the head and put some through the valve hole but it still won't start??? I have checked the points (points and condensor and plug new) and there is a good spark at the plug(even tried another new plug). I have been reading another problem on here (the purple peril of shauns)that sounds exactley like mine and it turned out to be a bad carb set up..Any ideas??????????

strip the carb, clean thoroughly, check the needle valve operates correctly, put a short piece of pipe on the fuel inlet, should be able to blow freely, turn carb upside down, floats should shut valve and stop your puff! Oh almost forgot, check carb is even getting fuel, open tap with open pipe Edited by monkey wrench, Mar 15 2010, 08:01 AM.

Got it going I cut a 3/8 extention down stuck a 19mm socket on it and shoved it in my drill, stuck the drill in reverse and shoved it on the flywheel...5 min later hey presto

I was going to suggest giving it a bump start rather than trying to kick it over - glad you got it running

goes okay with a small bump. Kicks up every now and again. How poor are the kick starts on these bikes.......

That sounds like poor compression. Does it run ok when it starts, no misfires, flat spots. Take the barrel off, put a piston ring in the bore and measure the gap. Edited by ballintur, Mar 16 2010, 08:35 PM.

i had a problem with my fizzy at the weekend, just put the bike back together re-built engine, new piston and rings etc.it started up ok and ran really sweet so took it for a gentle ride to put a few miles on it to make sure everything was ok.stopped after about 15 miles to let the engine have a bit of a cool down.when i tried to start it after about 5 mins it was a right pig to get it going again, when it finally did start it was making a loud rasping sound that sounded like it was comming from the carb.it got me home ok but i was mystified as to what it was.next day i took it out again to fetch the morning paper and it would only start by bumping it off, later in the day i had a look at it and noticed smoke around the cylinder i then realised the rasping noise was the head gasket blowing.i checked the nuts and they were all slack! i know they were tight after the re-build so i think it must have been the base gasket squashing up and making it loose.i re-tightend the head nuts and it runs spot on again
