while setting up my front forks in the workmate to use them as a jig to fit new a new rim and spokes,i noticed the wheel was 1/4 inch nearer to one fork than the other and at a strange angle and one fork leg was lower.i had noticed this before when looking at the bike head on but it rode ok so left it as i knew i would be stripping it before long anyway.the wheel was ok untill i tightened the spindle nut then it went on the p*ss,i found out that the mounting lug on left fork was worn at an angle on the inside and was pulling the whole thing out of square. 5 mins with a file to square it up and hey presto! wheel now central and both forks level so if you have an out of line front wheel check the fork lugs are ok before shelling out on new forks

Certainley a TOP TIP. I`ve often assumed that 2nd hand parts bought will fit straight away and be an improvement.......

I had that with my rebuild, the front wheel was well P***** leaning over and it turned out to be the bottom lug on the fork leg out of line, a quick trip to my local frame straightener and he sorted it without even damaging the paintwork.......top guy

things are know starting to fall into place.when i first bought the bike, a few days later i noticed that the front wheel spindle was too long and someone had fitted an extra spacer, but instead of fitting it on the outside of the fork leg behind the nut they had put it inside between the standard spacer and the fork leg forcing the left hand fork out at an angle.i asumed this was down to someone being a bit thick, but know realise it was a bodge to get the wheel to sit central.i've taken the afternoon of work today, now off down the shed too cut my spokes out and do lots of hub polishing
