I've just fitted the battery to the fs1, connected it up but not a sign of life :'( One or two points, its about 30 years since I connected one of these up so I cant remember where the negative lead from the battery hooks to? .. The battery is newly filled by the bike shop and charged until fizzy (about 45 mins), and the inline fuse is ok. Any idea's????

Have you got a multi-meter ?.

I'd be metering to check the battery has 6.5 ish volts, then the voltage going to the ignition, then coming out from the ignition and then onwards ?.

You could also pop the neutral bulb out and check if there is voltage at the bulb holder incase the neutral bulb has gone ?.

Will be the best £10 you ever spent !!!.

Just make sure it does AC, DC, Ohms resistance and continuity.

Right, I actually tried that and there was'nt a peep from the live wire so obviously it is'nt charged properly :$
I've stuck it back on charge now so any idea how long I could leave a new battery on charge safely? :ermm:
The charger is 6v DC 750ma.

If there is nothing then you either havnt got the frame earth right or the battery is screwed.Hasnt it already had charge time of 45 mins? That should be more than enough to cause a spark.

Batteries are nearly always dry charged, so as long as it was filled with the correct battery acid it should be pretty good out the box. They normally recommend a trickle charge to make sure it's absolutely fully charged but it's not normally necessary.

You could connect a 6v bulb direct to the terminals to see if it has voltage cos you'd be pretty unlucky to get a dud new battery ?.

take the live red wire coming off the battery and take the bullet conector end & gently tap it against the black wire ring terminal coming off the battery - if it sparks you have juice at the battery !

Just done that and got a good healthy spark. So now I suppose I have no choice but to re trace all the wiring and see if I can find anything :(
If anyone has any other suggestions as well I'd appreciate it. I'm hopeless at bloody wiring!!!

If you have flicked the live wire againt the bare metal of the frame and there is no spark then the battery isn't earthed.

So your Battery is good as flicka has said you are failing to get a good connection with the black battery terminal to the frame - you need to clean up that point and get a good metal to metal contact between the black wire ring crimp and your frame at the point where you attach it.

I'll try that, but when I fitted it yesterday I actually scraped the paint away from where I was siting the earth. I'd be very surprised if it still was'nt getting a good earth there. :'(
