How do you get the oil seals out of the fork collars, I have tried tw**ing them, gouging with a driver but the won't shift. are they encased around a lip inside the collar as I can just see part of a metal ridje also is there only 4 ball bearings within the engine? do you have the NSK bearing Nos or sizes? I need to buy a set and engine seals + fork seals. how many seals are in the motor? Cheers Cobra |

Dave I could not see any clips. at the bottom of the collar inside there was the seal spring but no clip. the haynes manual says the oil seals simply push out, no mention of clips Cheers |

took them to a fab shop, they had a hydraulic press and got tthe buggers out. they said just under 2 ton of pressure was on them before they moved!! I did not realise there was a metal ring on the outside of the seal to collar, hence the reason they would not shift I think. result. now for re chroming, is it worth it? |

I just spent the day stripping my front forks (drum) down for rechroming and respraying. I noticed a spring and inside plastic seal in the fork collars. I didnt use brute force to remove the plastic (unusual for me!) but moved on. My questions are: 1. can I leave the seal in during rechroming (probably a daft q. but excuse me this is my first restoration); 2. If not are they available to purchase? 3. If so where? Thanks for your help guys.

The acid will burn away all the rubber on re chroming, so will have to be new units. Yamaha have a few left. there is plenty of pattern seals available on ebay etc. let me know were you are sending them for chroming as I need to do mine Cheers Cobra |

Just been down to Exeter to pick up a job lot of 3 frames, wheels, engines, forks, tanks, and just about everything you could think of. Mark from Cov coming next week to help sort things thru, he knows a place where they do a great job for £25 per pair. Ill PM you the details. I might be doing a job lot as there are plenty of collars on the frames ive briefly looked at. |

just sent x2 collars off to team almere in Holland. They send x 2 rechromed collars back (not yours) for £33 plus postage. www.fs1shop.com. My postage (registered so it could be done cheaper) £7 Collars £33 Return postage (part of another order) £7 total £47 I think its pricey but the only time it took me was to pop the collars to the PO and look up on the internet. i didnt fancy trawling thru yellow ages and making x 2 trips to get 2 collars rechromed so i guess ive saved my own valuable time. Ill let you know what the collars look like when they are returned to me. |

funny enough I have just sent mine to them on Thursday for exchange also. they put the prices up on Thurs, so I had to pay 2 quid more!! I got a price for chroming from a place in Hull, they wanted 30 quid + vat, so it was not worth doing. I also bought 200 quids worth of kit from them so the postage for the lot is 18 quid, which I thought was OK considering I got pipe rear muddy and a whole lot of other bits. to buy on ebay as seperates the postage is crippling total spend on my fizzie at the mo is 12 hundred quid + the bike which was 700 quid and I have not finished yet. all the painting to do etc. had I guessed this I would have bought 1 already done, but at the time they were fetchin 3K + I must admit though most of the stuff I have been buying is NOS also I get carried away, I have bought all NOS washers nuts n bolts bla bla bla most of the bike is still available from yamaha. I have bought a number of pattern bits but little. I even got NOS rims and spokes, these are 35 quid each, so no point in buying pattern rims let me know how you get on and stop out bidding me on ebay!!  Cobra |

....but .. we are building it ourselves...and it is supposed to be a hobby! I need to cost out what ive spent on my resto. It would be an interesting exercise. Ive come to the conclusion Team Almere are quite good for some things and especially the later stuff. ... and they tell me thay are translating thier site into english by the end of May! Im going to do a 1978 fs1dx next (subject to my frame being OK) (my bike at 16. and Unless I can find one to buy) and I can pretty much source the major 2G0 items for it from them. They are not so good on the earlier models and thats where someone with UK knowledge comes into their element (E.G. Per). Let me know how long they take to deliver! ....i think you paid too much for that last side panel!!!! |
