Hi there, my name is Alex, im 15 (16 in a month) years old and just yesterday got given an old fizzy. It was my friends dads bike which he then gave to me as it has been sitting in the garage for the last 30ish years, getting no use and slowly rusting and decaying. I'd expressed and interest in it and he just said I could have it! Its a fs1e dx, regestration number MFN 476R. I had a look for the frame and engine number but I couldnt find them, although I didn't know where to look. Basically im a complete noob when it comes to motorbikes, although im into cycling and can do most things mechanically for that. 3 years ago we had the bike out and the dad managed to get it running and we drove around his field on it for a bit, unfortunatly the child of the dad (my friend) wasnt particuarly interested and so its been left ever since. He managed to crash it round the field and bent the right hand side pedal so that will definatly need replacing although I havnt managed to find one on parts websites. Just now I managed to get it running although it wouldnt move due to a stuck front brake. Its covered in rust and missing a battery and my aim is to get it completely fixed, get it through its MOT and all that and have it on the road for when im 16. I dont think i will mange this but so long as i can get it going in the next few months ill be happy. While searching for the engine/frame numbers I came across TUM 178 on the left side crank case cover (I think) and also found 10B 235 01 on the frame behind the forks. This mean anything? Thanks for reading, its a great forum and i hope to be of some help while you lot attempt to help me Here are some pictures: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Alex |

Hey,
welcome to the site, the number on the crankcase is the engine number, and the one on the frame is the frame number, sure someone will tell you exactly what year and model it is. Good choice on the fizzy, Im 16, 17 in jan, not one ped or scrambler can get close to me and when ur 16 thats all that matters beating your mates, its geared so you can jump onto a bigger bike when ur 17 im getting a 400:). Ebay is your best bet for parts really. This sites really helpfull for what you need and are happy to help. Have fun steve |

Yeah i've been told they are pretty good speed wise (for 50cc at least) and they are so old you dont have to legally restrict to 30mph.... although mine will take a while before I can even get that
What was the insurance like for you? and have you got any idea of their mpgs? Alex |

Yes its a complete state at the moment, but it runs so there's still hope. What are the main issues i need to think about for MOT's? Currently my plan of action is to get the front brake sorted, check the rear brake still works + look at pads, fix/sort out the pedal mechanism and then clean up the rusty bits. I was considering just buy all new parts for it (handle bars, exhaust..) but so long as they are not falling to pieces will they be ok if i just give them a clean? I dont currently have the money for new bits so I need to get it fixed for as cheap as possible really. Alex |

My insurance was 180 third party fire an theft with mce, i'm still not sure of how far i get on a tank tbh always try an work it out but always forget, its about 80 or so on a tank and about 10/15 on reserve and thats about 7 quid of petrol. Good luck with the bike, like Andy said it'll come up a treat. |

right, for a start be aware that its worth rather a lot! im no expert but i think maybe £750+ in the state it is in now. crazy eh. so even if you have to loan money from your parents to mint it up its deffo worth it. dont worry about MPG, its irelavent on a fizzy. well compared to other stuff i have had! |

Thanks for that i'll have to check MCE out, just now using aload of made up information I got 260 quoted but with an excess of 250?? That basically saying they are insuring me for 10quid?? I said the bike was worth 500 as an estimate, although in its current state i doubt if its a tenth of that. If im using ebay for parts is there anything in particual I should look for? I dont necissarly want genuine refurbished parts of whatever but they need be be reasonable quality, is there such indication of this? Thanks for help so far, Alex |

Basically, genuine parts go for an absoloute fortune, its all about how much you have and are willing to spend, the other option is pattern parts which are cheaper but sometimes arent direct fits but you get what you pay for and tbh should be gratefull that they are available. Like an original exhaust will go for 200+ a pattern can be bought for 40. Insurance i find confusing, your premium is 250, say if its stolen then you pay 250 for them to give you 500 or something like that not entirly sure. In parts fizzys are worth a lot more than they are worth as a complete bike so yes it is worth 500 easy as tommo said. |

£750!!! no way!! I saw one on ebay going for a few thousand the other day but it was in amazing condition, all shiney and new looking but theres no way my rusty lump can be worth 750! Alex |

steve-d : Yours looks more modern than mine and in great shape when you bought it, good deal I would think. I like your handlebars, mind are drop downs or something, is there much difference? apart from the obvious height. Also what is the lever behind the foot rest of the left hand side? It looks like its connected to the gear lever but mine doesn't have that? Also i notice you don't have pedals, is that because its a later model? Or did somebody change it to a fixed foot rest? Alex EDIT: Would pattern parts be ok to use then? As in they are not going to make me crash/fail the MOT or anything? I was talking to somebody who said some rubbishy parts you get for cheap just rust quickly and are very poor quality, this true? |

You'd be surprised.... It looks untouched, and very low mileage. Even the plug cap is genuine....and worth money for those who cares for it |

Didnt check milage actually 5000 thats really good, mines just gone over 27000. Left hand side should be gear lever clciky Mine is a later type, not worth as much, about a 900 is the most iv seen my model go for in mint. I think it was 77 when they were a new law was passed restricting 50cc mopeds to 30mph so they got rid of the pedals so yours is pre 77 so is fully derestricted. With pattern parts, its how much you care if its got a pattern part on it nothing wrong with it but its not 'original'. No difference in handlesbars apart from mine i can sit back further yours you have to lean forward a bit, id rather have yours really but hey. |
