As you may have seen in other posts I am also trying to establish exactly when the change from "SS" to "FS1-E" took place. I am still not 100% sure of the exact date but here is some of the evidence I have gathered to date to narrow it down. I believe the first frame/engine number in the UK to be *394 - 000101* as most Yamaha models start with these last six digits with the first three identifying the model. The last number in the Candy Orange range being 017500. Therefore your 006097 sits right in the middle of this range. The "SS" model was introduced in August 1972 and it generally thought that Yamaha changed it to the "FS1-E" side panel markings in January 1973, after legal pressure from Honda who had their own SS50 model at the time. A couple of other clues in identifying the exact model are the type of handlebars its got and whether indicators have been fitted although these may have obviously been changed, added or taken off over the past 34 years. Again it is generally believed that the early "SS" model came with very low straight bars without the cross bar and without indicators which were an optional extra when the model was first introduced into the UK. Having said that I have yet to see one with these bars on it, not even a photo except for a YAMAHA sales advert. Also as your fizzy is on an M-Reg plate meaning that it was registered at some time between August 1973 and July 1974. Based on the above evidence I would therefore say your model is more likely the later "FS1-E" type, however, I cannot be 100% sure still.

I stand to be corrected as always ;)

interesting bit of research Per, it amazes me after all these years that there are still quite a few little grey areas which we cant be certain about regarding the early fizzy, maybe one day all the answers will emerge. B) B) B) B)

hi all

i believe the SS's were the american market FS1E's as I have an SS. It is canadian and the year model 1975.

I contacted Yamaha Canada about them and the response i got was Yamaha never entered the moped market, its likely not one of our machines.

Strangely enough Harley and bombardier also deny making scooters or mopeds.

seems the deal is they entered the market so late it was a bust move on their part.
