...lol i can get a turbo for about £100 and on the 998 -> 1030cc tis quite a good way to do it, the 998cc heads have ALOOOOOOOOOT of meat on them (aka ALOT of room for porting) im trying to get my hand on a pair of webers from my mates trashed mini... if im sucessfull hopefully i can break 110ish bhp.... problem ive got at the moment, lack of cash... therefore all current mods will be cheap/free/done by me, the most cash im spending is roughly £100 on a new manifold/downpipe (3-2-1) into a straight pipe into a nice little cherrybomb. the inlets will hopefulyl be some tubulars with polished and ported insides and then powdercoated silver (or chromed), the head will be our spare racing innovations one (from the days when my dad used to race) which has air induction on each cylinder (like the boost bottles you get for fizz's and ****) that basically takes some of the gas out when you lift off so that when you re-apply its instant boost, theyre currently blocked off (they werent race legal) but im considering re-opening them and having a play.... im aiming to home-make my stage to roughly stage2 of that of a bought head, but even stage 2 bought heads arent that good... so mine should be like cream of the crop stage 2 possibly stage 3 just without hte gigantic ports... i just love the a-series for the piss easy head change ability, it takes me about 10-15 minutes to get the head off.... so hopefully i can literally tune it and find out what works best for the a-series *using david vizards book as a good guideline* unfortuneatly the current head on the midget is a leaded head, but has been slightly port/polished by my dad... its just a shame that its not an unleaded head a 70bhp 650kg mini... despite what most say would be rather quick, after all its nearing 130bhp/ton but a nearing 200bhp/600kg midget... LOL
if you can get your hands on a cheap 1275 block i'd reccomend it... its just something fun to have, and if you feel sexy you could just drop that in your mini for a 100bhp pisstake easy!... |

hey db give it to me and ill tune it up....if you get a mini get one thats made from 1984+ because i will have disc brakes.... These are the mods on my mini so far... Twin 1/4" SU carbs (change to twin choke weber probs). 3-2-1 maifold on 1.75" mainpipe single silencer exhaust (noisy). Stage 3 tuned high compression mini cooper head (gonna tune this head up more). +0.040" High compression flat top pistons (£200!). Mini cooper cam with lightened duplex timing gear (gonna swap this for fast road cam). Estimated 62BHP on these mods...when finished around 70bhp. And frodo i wouldnt change the head to unleaded because ive heard that the unleaded valve seat and fall out on race engines...so i didnt bother and im gonna use high octane unleaded with lead additive... Also...have you thought about that yb100 engine yet? |

high octane unleaded with lead additive??? yeah right for the first week till you get fed up paying £1.10 a litre plus cost of lead additive and then you have to put the lead additive in blah blah. hardened valve seats do not fall out. cars have been using them for years. even if they did in every 1 in a 100 cars its still worth it for the benefit you get. |

lead additive lasts for a long time tommo...for a full tank of petrol on my mini i would have to add 23ml of lead and thats nothing, plus minis are good on petrol and will always do 35mpg+ even on well tuned engines...plus you can get twin petrol tank conversions and not go to any petrol stations in a couple of weeks... And with the unleaded valve seats, it was only on racing engine that they would sometimes fall out in....because these engines would be revved up to 8000rpm but like you said it didnt happen that often but this one case put many racers off it... It also costs around £100 for the conversion to unleaded, and i would rather spend it on tuning stuff. |

It depends what budget you have DB but if your on a tight 'first car' budget then the mg miget and tr6 would be out of the question...jowett javelin's ive seen cheap but are big, heavy and slow....so really a minor or mini would be good for you...but if your looking at minis the 1984+ ones would be the best, as they have disc brakes and are generally cheap. Also if you get a mini theres loads of stuff you can do to them...i.e fit a motorbike engine and get to 60mph in 2 secs....fit 180bhp honda engines... |

Aye, twas fathers first car. He fitted a jowett jupiter engine to his though, got a 100 out of it but then realised he hadnt upgraded the brakes. They are something of a rarity now though, would love to have one! |

maybe ill go and buy one of them BMW bubbles and fit a hayabusa engine init or a bond bug with a helicopter turbine or maybe a 2cv and put a new hamster in its wheel or maybe a rover and stick and MG badge on it (o wait they already do that) or an ancient triumph and watch the rust appear before my very eyes or maybe ill get a mini and talk about all the things i want to do to it but probably never will - - - or maybe ill just buy a rubbish little ancient car for 300quid and run it untill the floors drops out because of rust. hmmm. |
