I have an ignition system spare from a dt50mx and am thinking of fitting it to my fs1e engine as i want to run a z1 barrel and understand that the ignition needs to be accurate.can anyone offer advise on if this is possible and what would be involved ? i was planning on slotting the backplate of the mag to adjust the timing position but how would i set the timing ? Use a dial gauge to find 1.8 mm (or 71 thou) before TDC, then mark the flywheel and casing at this position. Re-fit the plug and connect a strobe. Start the engine and adjust the back plate until the marks line up. If the timing is too far out for the engine to run, then you will have to spin the motor some other way to see where the timing is. You can get it close enough to run with a few checks using a meter. Details are all in this thread. http://s8.zetaboards.com/FizzyTalk/topic/8322004/1/ |

OK,my mag has 2 marks on it-one on the backplate and another on the rotor, these look factory done. Am i correct in thinking that when these marks align, the ignition will fire ?this will give me an approx starting position for the timing. |

It's possible that someone has marked the mag before, but a risk to cut metal on that basis unless you are sure they are factory marks. Before drilling any holes, I would mount the backplate using the existing holes. Then spin the motor using a battery drill on the flywheel nut (plug removed) then you can see where the firing position is with a strobe. |
