Do the EN Spectre! Then I can steal it and use it in the comic in future so I don't have to draw the bloody thing. procrastinate more by playing video games because I don't have to draw the bloody thing.

Fixed it for you. You can thank me later.

We'll just ignore the fact I might have been the cause of your last bit of comic procrastination via video games. Just somewhat.

Bismuth?

Beautiful, that's going on the list.

WHAT THE SHIT THAT'S NOT REAL (I have never come across that before, that is amazing)

Bismuth is one of the few natural occurances of perfect right angles. It was talked about in a maths lecture in first year, thats the only reason I know about it.

How about something by MC Escher? That would look freaking cool in 3D!

...or is that considered sacrilege?

Serious suggestion based on something we always had to do on my course.

Mobile Phone.

It's surprisingly complex and simple at the same time. You'll see what I mean.

I think I'll stick to making things that are geometrically possible before moving onto something like that.

Probably won't give a rat's ass what I say/ask to model.

Try doing a Lambda Shuttle from Star Wars, or something.

Forced perspective.

As long as you always have the camera render's viewpoint open you'll be able to tell whether it looks alright or not.

I already said it over steam but I'll say it again. This looks fantastic. You managed to make the glass look realistic and as someone who has no idea what you were doing, I'm stunned you managed to do this in the time you said it took (30 mins if you ignore rendering time).

Still, my only comment (not a criticism, just me thinking) is that for some reason I'd have thought there'd be light on the table from where the light passes through the coloured balls but ignoring that, I think it's pretty awesome that you made it look better than the original source picture.

Remind me to google random words again if you want another suggestion. ;)

EDIT - Because for some reason my computer decided to post it when I tried to open another tab.

Iiii don't know about that. It's prettier than the real photo, but has a slightly surreal quality. The baubles almost seem too transparent, and feel very delicate. Like they're soap bubbles instead of glass. This is most apparent for me at the bottom, the inside rim, the way it shows so clearly through the small blue one is almost like those lines are in front of rather than behind the blue. I do like the top rim of the container glass. And the section to the left of the top blue ball, the transparency and refraction there is very convincing.

I know I could do better, but this single frame took 1 hour 15 minutes to render out, and I wouldn't be learning anything new for what I could do to fix it.

Thanks for the feedback, though. Like you said on Steam, you don't really get a good feel for what it's going to look like until it's rendered, and then it's too late unless you want to waste time fixing it.

Sometimes, going back to fix things is quite a valid learning method for the time involved. But sometimes not.

A short video of the balls. I find it strange that the regular viewfinder's Dynamics completely change their random seed when actually rendering them out.

Bump for East's G&T.

Posted Image

Bump again for a few pieces of Silv's drone which I quickly mocked up at work today.

Posted Image

Bump again, got the iris mechanics working. There's no iris in the original design, but the shape of one intrigued me, and I'd like to put some life into animating this character later down the line.

Posted Image

Yet another bump; rigged the springy antennae react automatically to movement.

It's been the thing I've both enjoyed the most and learnt the most doing. I'm pretty much at the stage now where I can start putting things together, which means I'll be learning about X-Refs (placing one file inside another as a proxy, so you can just go back to the original object's file and edit it any time, and it'll update automatically in the document it was linked).

No, I'm not going to model that shuttle or the Enterprise anytime soon

Bump, added the bulk to the shell. I'm ready to start attaching all the other items now.

Also, a bit of test-texturing.

Got the iris working without any texture overlap.

Think I might be remodelling one part, though:

Aye, on the list. Although at this rate, it won't get done until your next birthday.

Good enough, thanks

ps. is that from Portal 2 or just a pic you had lying around Silv? Either way looks amazing Pix.

One of my exes is sorta in the same boat. He was playing around with a 3D pig animation to learn more, got a commission for another animation in the meantime, the client saw the pigs, turned around and said 'can you make ours 3D too?'. I think they're in for a shock when they see the additional cost!
Anyway, what I think I'm trying to say is the more you do, the more likely someone sees and will pay you for it ;)

It is a thing I made up, for further projects. Pix has rendered it most gloriously (if not quite blue enough yet), and seeing it animated in any manner sounds like fun.
I may suggest that there be four of them, though. ;)

Yeah, I just plastered that last one with a single material (except the the eye) rather than the mish-mash of individual stuff I'd given them. Need to texture it as a group, but the tests I had with the shell blue didn't look as pretty as chrome metal. Because nothing looks as pretty as chrome metal. =D
