As some of you may or may not know, I'm currently in Japan. During my time here, I was informed about a contest where someone can submit a manga storyboard, even if they can't draw well, and have the story judged by actual mangaka and possibly published. I'm seriously contemplating entering this contest, but I am at loss as to what kind of story I should submit. I have numerous ideas I could use, but I want to submit one that others would find the most interesting, even if it's different from my own opinion. Therefore, you'll find below a list of some of the my ideas that I personally think to be the best of my ideas. I was wondering if I could get an honest opinion from fellow manga readers as to what story sounds the most interesting to them? Even if you think they're all good or they all suck, I want to know what you all think is the best. Angel -> Demon (Angel to Demon) This story involves a great war between the angels of the Celestial Plain and the demons of the Underworld taking place on a fantasy world (I'm still deciding on a name for it). It focuses mainly around the angel, Kei. After slaying an innocent newborn demon, he happens across the Fire Demon God, Suzaku. Suzaku, appalled by the actions of an angel, places a curse upon Kei, turning him into a demon. Now forced to live the of a demon, Kei is taken care of by a small group of orphaned demons, including a fire demon named Kazai, whom eventually comes to see him like a brother. The story follows Kei's life as he attempts to survive as a demon and break the curse placed upon him. Band of Thieves During the Age of Thieves in a world similar to our own, one man known as Ken'nichi Soma is the King of Thieves. He and his band of thieves have the highest bounty around, and while he seems unstoppable, he has a weakness. A few years ago, his group wound up rescuing a young boy named Kit from some dangerous rapids. Kit was the adopted son of the wealthiest couple in the town over, the same couple Ken's groups planned to steal from. He couldn't help but befriend the boy, and therefore couldn't steal from the couple. Since that day, the town had served as a refuge for Ken. Kit dreams of becoming a great thief like Ken, though Ken obviously tries to push him away from the dangerous occupation. Kit's name comes from the fact that his parents found him alone in the woods being raised by a family of foxes. Kit also has a strange ability to understand what animals are saying. Kit's foolishness leads him to try and steal a valuable artifact from a man in another town nearby, but he is caught and Ken comes to his rescue. When the man prepares to kill Kit for his futile attempt, Ken offers himself in exchange for Kit's safety, losing an eye in the process. Ken is therefore turned in and sentenced to life in the world's most high-tech and secure prison known simply as "Paradise". Kit vows to become the best thief in the world and form the ultimate band of thieves so he can "steal" his friend from the prison. Child of the Lightning After being struck by lightning when walking home from school, a boy is given the power to control lightning. He decides to become a superhero like in the movies, but quickly learns that lightning is not something that can be controlled easily. He accidentally blows up his home city and becomes the most wanted criminal on the planet. With the whole world after him, just trying to survive is an issue. Contract The story begins with a typical middle school boy, named Colt Anderson, browsing a bookstore for a book he needs for school. He's the kind of child who gets picked on/beat up all the time and doesn't have the best, albeit not the worst grades in school. While looking for a particular book, he sees one glowing for a brief moment and looks in it. It's a book about magic and stuff, but the boy thinks it to be nothing but a fake magic children's book. Still, since he thought he saw it glowing, he buys it anyway. At his house, while taking a break from his studies, he spots the book glowing again. He turns to the page that is glowing and sees an ad about getting your own demon slave. Curious about it, Colt signs his name on the page where it mentions it and a furry, wingless dragon-like demon appears before him. The demon introduces himself as Neru of the Shadow-flame Demons and claims he is one of the strongest demons in existence. He asks his new master what evil deed he can perform for him. When the boy mentions that he only has bully problems, the demon becomes shocked and criticizes the kid for summoning him for not only such a pathetic request, but also for signing his soul away. Realizing Colt has no idea what he just did, Neru explains that demons become stronger by eating the souls of their masters once their master dies, and how much stronger they get depends on the number of evil deeds their master had them do over the course of their life. Neru claims that devouring the boy's soul would only weaken him because he's so pathetic, and feels that he is being punished by his superiors. However, upon seeing how truly bad Colt’s life is, the demon decides to help the boy perform a complete 180 on his life and make his soul something truly worthwhile. Dragon’s Curse When the son a famous Dragonslayer falls ill with a fatal disease, he seeks out the only known cure: the blood of a newborn dragon. Should a person drink the blood of a newborn dragon, they will gain eternal youth and gain perfect health. He slays a young dragon and forces his son to drink it, but soon discovers that there’s a terrible curse for drinking the blood of such an innocent creature. A dragon warns the knight that his son will become corrupted and turn into a monster that is neither human nor dragon. Only the dragon elders could prevent this fate from happening, but the dragons aren’t willing to help a Dragonslayer, especially one who just killed a baby dragon. After the knight pleads with the dragons and sacrifices his own life, the dragons agree to save the child and adopt him as one of their own. However, the dragons are not about to let the humans go on slaying them, so they decide to use the boy to infiltrate the ranks of the Dragonslayers and provide them the intel they need to survive. The story follows the boy as he struggles between choosing the life of a human or the life of a dragon. Eighth Continent A mysterious 8th continent appears to the world after a blast of energy seemingly splits the sky open in 2012. Nobody can set foot on it, though, as a magical barrier literally disintegrates anything that touches it. 16 years later, a plane flying from America to Japan is shot down while flying over it, and a group of kids, including the main protagonist named Tai Isano, ends up surviving the crash and waking up inside the barrier. While there, the group of four finds a human village, where the residents help the travelers. The four introduce themselves, and Tai mentions to the villagers that he's adopted when they notice that he looks nothing like his little sister. His real name is Typhon Tatsu. The villagers instantly freak out and the group eventually decides to leave when they realize how scared everyone is. After encountering a dragon in the strange land, Tai discovers that he's actually a dragon, a dragon prince to be more precise. When he was born, he released a blast of energy so powerful that it split the sky. Worried that the other nations might try to abduct his son, his father sent him off to the outside world and disguised him as a human with a powerful spell. Now that he's returned, he tries to find a way to regain his dragon form while avoiding capture by enemy nations. GEMS One day, the world was attacked by a demon from outer space known as Isa Aco. His reasons were unknown, but his powers were so great that nobody could stand against him. The gods were forced to intervene, but even they were unable to stand against his might. When the world seemed like it would be facing certain doom, the youngest of the gods tricked the demon and sealed the majority of his powers within a crystal, but lost his life in the process. The gods took the opportunity to defeat Isa Aco, but he was not killed. Isa Aco’s soul took over the body of an unborn baby boy, and he was reborn as a human named Isaac with no memory of what had transpired in the past. 16 years later, Isaac finds the crystal housing his powers, but when he refuses to return to his evil self, the crystal splits into 6 unique gems, each containing an elemental power. And, to make matters worse, one of the gems houses the darkest portion of his powers, and it has taken a physical form. Isaac must find the other gems before the creature of the dark gem does or risk allowing it to finish the task Isa Aco started. Legend of the Sky Riders Centuries ago, the scientists of the world discovered a new kind of element that could power all the cities on the planet for years with only a few pounds of it. However, the element was handled without caution and became unstable, causing damage equivalent to a worldwide nuclear war when it exploded. As a last ditch effort to save humanity, the element was once again relied upon to power special devices that would allow giant landmasses to hover high in the atmosphere, away from the damage. It worked when the element was handled with care, but the damage had been done. The humans that survived decided that they should return to a life not so much dependent on technology, like their ancestors, on these sky islands. But the animals left behind on the surface are not happy with the humans, and the radiation has mutated them into creatures of a new variety. A legendary group of heroes called the “Sky Riders” have succeeded in taming some of the flying creatures and protect the last remaining humans from the mutated beasts. One boy dreams of being a Sky Rider one day. His dream is only furthered when he meets them as they pursue a phoenix-like creature. Unfortunately, the phoenix targets the boy and drags him to the surface world. The Sky Riders mount a rescue mission, but are surprised when they find the phoenix protecting the child a day later. Convinced the boy somehow tamed the phoenix, the boy becomes a Sky Rider and joins them in protecting the human race. Mythical Creature Buster This story involves a boy who can see mythical creatures in everyday society, but nobody believes him. One day, a new transfer student arrives at his school, whom he recognizes as a kitsune. Nobody else can see it though, and they don't believe him when he calls the kitsune out on it. The kitsune obviously denies the accusations as well. Later, the boy receives a note form the kitsune saying that he was upset about the accusations and he doesn't feel welcomed anymore. However, he then realizes a secret message within the note telling him not to get involved. He later finds the kitsune fighting some sort of gargoyle-like creature, and ignores the kitsune's warning to run. The kitsune ends up dropping a strange-looking gun, which the boy picks up and fires at the gargoyle, destroying it. The kitsune is surprised at the human's ability to use the weapon and reveals that he's part of a secret force known as "Busters" that prevents mythical creatures from causing havoc among humans. He takes the boy to the headquarters and soon winds up with the human becoming his apprentice. Together, they must deal with an ever-increasing number of attacks by wild mythical creatures. Prince of the Stars This story involves a seemingly ordinary boy named Teiji living a fairly ordinary life. Out in space, a battle between the Galactic Prince, Teijo, and one of the three most wanted space pirates in the galaxy is underway. After Teijo's ship is severely damaged, he and his crew are forced to land on Earth to repair. While heading to Cram School, Teiji encounters a mysterious-looking blue dog known as Shura, and two men chasing him. The two men mistake Teiji for Teijo, as the two look nearly identical, but then soon realize their mistake. Back at the ship, the two men return Shura to Teijo and explain that Shura mistook Teiji for himself. Ordinarily, such a thing wouldn't surprise him, but for Shura to mistake his identity means that something's not right. Teijo requests that the men take him to meet with this Teiji. Before they can, the crew is once again ambushed by the space pirates. On his way back from school, Teiji happens upon the battlefield, and Teijo winds up receiving a fatal injury protecting Teiji, though not before killing the leader of the space pirates. He believes that Teiji may be the son of Teijo's brother, a traitor who abandoned his planet and was later killed in this solar system. If such a thing is true, that means Teiji is next in line for the throne, and that he must return to their home planet before a war of epic proportions breaks out. The journey there is not an easy one, as problems on other worlds and space pirates hinder their progress. Possessed This story is about a boy who questions the strange behavior of his former best friend after a year. When a group of punks his former friend hangs out with plan on doing something that would get them in serious trouble with the law, the boy confronts his friend and tries to convince him to stop. His friend begins acting even stranger, and the boy winds up punching his friend out. It is then that he discovers a strange weasel/fox-like creature lying next to his friend. He captures it and discovers that it is a demon that lives in people's bodies and manipulates humans, feeding off their emotions and brain waves. He has to live in a human body or he'll die. After threatening to expose the demon's existence and ruin his plans, the boy allows the demon to live in his body instead. Because he is aware of the demon, the demon cannot control him. The demon accepts the offer, and the boy is soon dragged into a plot that could threaten humanity's very way of life. Ring of the Nine Long ago, a ring was created to control nine legendary creatures by a witch. Throughout the centuries, the ring has exchanged hands and been used by those seeking world domination. Even those who originally sought to use the ring for good become corrupted by the power they hold. After the last Great War fought over the ring, it was lost to the ages, or so everyone thought. As a birthday present, a teenage girl has been given the ring after her parents found it in an antique shop. Now that she wields the power of the ring, numerous organizations have set their sights on her. Luckily for her, as long as she has the ring, the nine creatures will do everything they can to protect her. Seven Dragons of the Earth Long ago, a group of sorcerers called forth the seven dragons that live deep inside the world with a plan to take over it. The dragons betrayed the humans and proceeded to take it over themselves, killing all of the sorcerers in the process. However, before they died, one of them left behind a book containing spells powerful enough to seal them away again. Now, the dragons rule the world, and their influence has caused marks to appear on the arms of a select few children when they are born. When those marked children reach the age of 15, they become dragons themselves and become loyal puppets of the seven dragons. Some children hide their marks in the fear of what they will become, while others brandish their marks in public. One boy has hidden his mark for years, but when his friends are attacked by a group of marked children trying to instill fear, his own mark becomes exposed protecting them. On the day of his birth, he, like all others, becomes a dragon. The strange thing is that he can revert to his human form and even control his transformation. He finds out that he is the descendant of one of the sorcerers, driving him to find the book and seal away the dragon while pretending to be under their control. Stray Dog, Stray God This story follows the life of a nerdish boy named Nora. However, Nora's life isn't so ordinary, despite how much he would like it to be. He is, in fact, the old Egyptian God of Death, Anubis, in human form. Tired of his duties and the fact that he's not worshiped like he used to be, he left the world of the gods to see what life as a human is like while avoiding the other gods' detection. And when others learn his secret, their lives are anything but typical as well. |

'a typical middle school boy, named Colt Anderson' there is nothing typical about anyone with that name, its like how homers life changes when he changes his name to max power. colt anderson is the kind of name a no bullshit private eye would have. did you think of all of these for this contest or have you been hoarding them, they seem quite varied even if they might have been 'adapted' from already out mangas for all i know. its pretty cool that you have managed to spread your imagination so wide, all of my concepts are set in a single world and most intersect at times. |

You're right, that's not a very typical name, but I meant the fact that he's looks like an ordinary student. I've been hoarding these stories for a while, some of them from as far back as 8 years ago. Some of them may sound similar because I have a tendency to adapt elements from one idea into another story if I can come up with a completely different storyline. Many of the ideas I did not post would sound nearly identical to some of these, which is one of the reasons I didn't bother posting them. |

you shouldnt just have them all as kids then if you really want to add variation. children respond to things differently than adults and you could probably have the same story work two completely different ways just by how the character acted, although in manga kids seem to be generally better in the same way as they are in south park as solving everything lol. occupation is another, a soldier is way different to a, psychic for instance. i doubt you really need to be told this stuff but since all your concepts are child based i figure it might help to remind you there are options lol. i tend to recycle characters rather than concept ideas, when i stopped making red dawn (a resi evil style story) in high school i took all the characters. changed their names and clothing, and put them in new positions in DH. my main character used to own a gun shop and his weapon tech was a mercenary leader. |

These are shonen stories, so the main characters are generally going to be teenagers. With the exception of "Child of the Lightning", "Contract", and "Legend of the Sky Riders", all of the main human characters are 15 or older (high-schoolers). The main story of "Band of Thieves" actually takes place when Kit is around 17 or 18, as it deals with things such as underage drinking and the fact that the main character is a thief. The shonen genre is generally what I aim at with most of my stories, though I do have others that would appeal to an older audience. I just think I'm better at coming up with ideas involving a slightly younger generation. I can see what you're getting at with occupations and stuff, but if I'm not doing a story that sounds like something out of a video game or a story about an apocalyptic future, the main characters are generally not going to have a profession. So then, el-b, back to my original question: Which of the stories listed do you think would be the most interesting if you were to pick one up and start reading it? |

well, 8th continents beginning sounds like it could be the start of a horror game but i like that ones intro and the lightning one. i would like it more though if it wasnt just him running away, if it shows the effects of what happened on him and if he keeps trying to help people at the same time, although being a good guy when you shoot devastating lightning is probably harder than youd think. |
